When you narrate a series of actions in the order they happen — a recipe, a plan, a set of instructions — Chinese strings them together with 先…然后…再…最后… (xiān…ránhòu…zài…zuìhòu). 先 marks the first step, 然后 "and then" the next, 再 "then / next" a further planned step, and 最后 the last. English can leave sequencing implicit ("Wash your hands, eat, rest") or lean on "first / then / finally"; Chinese much prefers to signal the steps overtly, and it strings them onto a single subject stated once at the top and dropped thereafter. The one real trap for learners hides in that 再: here it means "then / next," not "again."
The sequence chain
Each marker owns a position in the chain. You rarely use all four at once — pick the ones the sequence needs — but they always appear in this order.
| Marker | Meaning | Position in the chain |
|---|---|---|
| 先 (xiān) | first | the first step; sits before the verb |
| 然后 (ránhòu) | then, after that | the next step; opens its clause |
| 再 (zài) | then, next (do…) | a further planned step; before the verb |
| 接着 (jiēzhe) | next, right after | immediately following; opens its clause |
| 最后 (zuìhòu) | finally, last | the final step; opens its clause |
先吃饭,然后看电影。
xiān chī fàn, ránhòu kàn diànyǐng
First eat, then watch a movie. (informal) — the minimal two-step chain.
先洗手,然后吃饭,最后休息一下。
xiān xǐshǒu, ránhòu chī fàn, zuìhòu xiūxi yíxià
First wash your hands, then eat, and finally take a rest. (informal)
我们先参观博物馆,接着去公园,最后回酒店。
wǒmen xiān cānguān bówùguǎn, jiēzhe qù gōngyuán, zuìhòu huí jiǔdiàn
We'll first visit the museum, next go to the park, and finally head back to the hotel. (neutral) — subject 我们 stated once.
先…再… without 然后
先 pairs naturally with 再 directly — "do A first, then do B" — especially when B is conditional on finishing A. This 再 is the sequential "then," and it's extremely common in everyday planning.
你先把这些资料看一遍,然后我们再讨论。
nǐ xiān bǎ zhèxiē zīliào kàn yí biàn, ránhòu wǒmen zài tǎolùn
Read through these documents first, then we'll discuss. (neutral)
咱们先点菜,再慢慢聊。
zánmen xiān diǎn cài, zài mànmàn liáo
Let's order first, then chat at our leisure. (informal)
想清楚了再回答,别着急。
xiǎng qīngchu le zài huídá, bié zháojí
Think it through, then answer — no rush. (informal) — 再 = 'then', gating the second action on the first.
The 再 vs 又 trap
The sequential 再 means the next planned step. It is not 又 (yòu). 又 marks realized repetition — something that already happened again — while 再 points at a step still to come. In a forward-looking sequence, the correct word is always 再, never 又.
先把水烧开,然后放面条,再加点盐,最后关火。
xiān bǎ shuǐ shāo kāi, ránhòu fàng miàntiáo, zài jiā diǎn yán, zuìhòu guān huǒ
First bring the water to a boil, then add the noodles, next add a little salt, and finally turn off the heat. (neutral) — 再 = the next step.
我昨天先去了银行,然后又去了超市。
wǒ zuótiān xiān qù le yínháng, ránhòu yòu qù le chāoshì
Yesterday I first went to the bank, then went to the supermarket as well. (informal) — past, already-done second trip, so 又.
The contrast between forward-looking 再 and realized 又 is worth its own study — see 再 vs 又 (Repetition). For enumerating points rather than actions ("firstly… secondly…"), Chinese switches to a different set: 首先…其次….
Common Mistakes
1. Using 又 for a planned next step. 又 is for repetition that has already occurred; a step still to come takes 再 (or 然后).
❌ 我们先吃饭,又看电影。
Wrong marker — the movie is a planned next step, not a repeat; use 然后/再, not 又.
✅ 我们先吃饭,然后看电影。
wǒmen xiān chī fàn, ránhòu kàn diànyǐng
We'll eat first, then watch a movie.
2. Repeating the subject in every clause. The chain shares one subject, named once. Restating it each time is heavy and un-Chinese.
❌ 我先吃饭,我然后看电视,我最后睡觉。
Overloaded — state 我 once and drop it: 我先…然后…最后…
✅ 我先吃饭,然后看电视,最后睡觉。
wǒ xiān chī fàn, ránhòu kàn diànshì, zuìhòu shuìjiào
I'll eat first, then watch TV, and finally go to bed.
3. Dropping 先, so the order goes unmarked. Without an opening 先, the listener can't tell the clauses are ordered rather than simultaneous.
❌ 洗手,然后吃饭。
Underspecified — start the sequence with 先 so the first step is clearly first: 先洗手…
✅ 先洗手,然后吃饭。
xiān xǐshǒu, ránhòu chī fàn
First wash your hands, then eat.
4. Putting 然后 before the verb like an adverb. 然后 opens a clause; it does not squeeze in between subject and verb the way 再/又 do.
❌ 我们吃饭然后看电影。
Missing the break — 然后 opens a new clause; front it with a pause: …然后看电影 after a comma, with 先 up top.
✅ 我们先吃饭,然后看电影。
wǒmen xiān chī fàn, ránhòu kàn diànyǐng
We'll eat first, then watch a movie.
Key Takeaways
- Order actions in time with 先 → 然后 → 再/接着 → 最后; use only the links the sequence needs, always in this order.
- This 再 = "then / next," a forward step — not 又 ("again," realized repetition).
- The chain rides on one subject, stated once and dropped — don't repeat "I… I… I…".
- 然后 / 接着 / 最后 open a clause (after a comma); 先 / 再 sit before the verb.
- For ordering arguments instead of actions, switch to 首先…其次….

- 首先…其次…最后… (Firstly…Secondly…)HSK 4 — To enumerate points in structured speech or writing, Chinese uses 首先…其次…再次…最后… — 'firstly… secondly… finally…'. These order ARGUMENTS, where 先…然后 orders ACTIONS in time.
- 一…就… (As Soon As / Whenever)HSK 3 — 一…就… (yī…jiù) welds two events together: the moment X happens, Y follows. It reads either as immediate consequence ('as soon as I get home, I'll call you') or as a habitual trigger ('whenever he drinks, he goes red'), with 就 carrying the 'then/at once' punch.
- 又 vs 再 (Realized vs Unrealized Repetition)HSK 3 — Chinese splits English 'again' by time direction: 又 (yòu) marks a repeat that already happened or habitually recurs (他又来了), while 再 (zài) marks one still to come (他明天再来). Choose by whether the repetition is realized or unrealized — and that's also why 又 pairs with 了 and 再 doesn't.
- Topic Chains Across ClausesHSK 5 — One topic can govern a whole run of clauses with the shared subject stated only once — 我早上起床,刷牙,吃饭,然后去上班 — the comma-linked chaining that Chinese prefers over repeating the subject.
