首先…其次… (Firstly…Secondly…)

When you lay out points, reasons, or list items — the way an essay or a structured argument does — Chinese enumerates them with 首先… (shǒuxiān…qícì…zàicì…zuìhòu). This is the "firstly… secondly… thirdly… finally…" of formal Chinese, and it is a different tool from the 先…然后 chain that orders actions in time. English blurs the two under one word, "first" — "First, wash the rice" (an action) and "First, it's cheaper" (an argument) both start with "first." Chinese keeps them apart: 先 for the action you physically do first, 首先 for the first point you make. Mixing them up is the classic tell of a learner who translated straight from English.

Enumerating points, not actions

首先 opens the list; 其次 gives the second item; 再次 (or 第三 "third") adds further ones; 最后 or 最终 closes it. Each usually opens a sentence and is followed by a comma — the rhythm of a speaker or writer laying out a case.

MarkerMeaningRole
首先 (shǒuxiān)firstly, first of allopens the enumeration
其次 (qícì)secondly, nextthe second point
再次 (zàicì)thirdly, furthermorea further point (also 第三)
最后 (zuìhòu)finally, lastlythe last point in the list
最终 (zuìzhōng)ultimately, in the endthe eventual outcome/conclusion

shǒuxiān, wǒmen yào zhìdìng jìhuà; qícì, yào luòshí dào rén; zuìhòu, yào ànshí zhíxíng

First, we need to draw up a plan; second, assign it to specific people; finally, carry it out on time. (formal)

xué hǎo yì mén wàiyǔ yǒu hěn duō hǎochù: shǒuxiān néng kāikuò yǎnjiè, qícì yǒulì yú zhǎo gōngzuò, zuìhòu hái néng jiāo dào xīn péngyou

Mastering a foreign language has many benefits: first, it broadens your horizons; second, it helps with finding work; finally, you get to make new friends. (neutral, essayistic)

guānyú zhège tí'àn, wǒ xiǎng shuō sān diǎn: shǒuxiān shì chéngběn, qícì shì shíjiān, zàicì shì fēngxiǎn

On this proposal I'd like to make three points: first, cost; second, timing; and third, risk. (formal)

💡
Ask yourself: am I ordering things I do or points I make? Actions in time → 先… Reasons, items, or arguments in a list → 首先… The English "first" hides this fork; Chinese forces you to choose.

Register: this is the formal register

首先…其次… belongs to structured, formal discourse — essays, reports, presentations, considered arguments. In casual chat about a string of actions, native speakers drop to 先…然后 or just narrate. Choosing 首先 signals that what follows is an organized case, so it can sound stiff if you use it to describe, say, your morning routine.

shǒuxiān gǎnxiè gèwèi de dàolái, qícì wǒ jiǎndān jièshào yíxià jīntiān de ānpái

First, thank you all for coming; second, let me briefly go over today's schedule. (formal, opening a talk)

wǒ fǎnduì zhège fāng'àn, shǒuxiān tā tài guì, qícì shíjiān yě bú gòu

I'm against this plan: first, it's too expensive; second, there isn't enough time. (neutral, argument)

首先…其次 vs 先…然后

The two chains are not interchangeable. Put them side by side and the split is clean: one lists abstract points, the other sequences concrete actions.

zuò zhè dào cài, xiān bǎ cài xǐ gānjìng, ránhòu qiē hǎo, zài xià guō

To make this dish, first wash the vegetables, then chop them, then put them in the pot. (informal) — physical actions in time: 先…

wǒ zhīchí tā, yuányīn yǒu liǎng ge: shǒuxiān tā yǒu jīngyàn, qícì tā hěn fùzé

I support him for two reasons: first, he's experienced; second, he's very responsible. (neutral) — reasons in a list: 首先…其次.

Common Mistakes

1. Using 首先/其次 for a physical action sequence. A string of things you do in time takes 先…然后, not the point-listing 首先…

Wrong tool — these are actions in time, not listed arguments; use

xiān xǐshǒu, ránhòu chī fàn

First wash your hands, then eat.

首先's partner is 其次, not 然后. 然后 belongs to the action chain.

Mismatched pair — 首先 lists points, so its partner is 其次, not the action-chain 然后.

shǒuxiān yào yǒu mùbiāo, qícì yào yǒu jìhuà

First you need a goal; second, you need a plan.

3. Using 其次 without an opening 首先. 其次 means "the second point," so it presupposes a first one has been marked. Leading with 其次 leaves the listener hunting for the missing first item.

Dangling — 其次 needs a 首先 before it; without the first point it's stranded.

zhège bànfǎ bù hǎo: shǒuxiān méi xiàoguǒ, qícì tài máfan le

This approach is no good: first, it doesn't work; second, it's too much hassle.

4. Confusing 最后 (last in a list) with 最终 (eventual outcome). 最后 closes the enumeration; 最终 reports how something turned out. They aren't swappable.

Wrong word — 最终 = the eventual result; a list's final item wants 最后: …

shǒuxiān tǎolùn, qícì tóupiào, zuìhòu yóu zhǔxí fāyán

First we discuss, then we vote, and lastly the chair speaks.

Key Takeaways

其次…再次…最后… enumerates points, reasons, or list items — the "firstly… secondly… finally…" of formal Chinese.
  • It orders arguments, while 先…然后 orders actions in time — English's single "first" hides this fork.
  • The register is formal / essayistic; for a casual run of actions, drop to 先…然后.
  • 首先's partner is 其次 (not 然后); 其次 needs a 首先 before it.
  • 最后 = the last item in a list; 最终 = the eventual outcome — don't swap them.
