The 把 (bǎ) construction is one of Mandarin's signature moves: it pulls a specific, known object in front of the verb so the sentence can spotlight what you do to that object. Once learners get the fronting, they often stop right at the verb — 我把门关 — and the sentence lands as unfinished as saying "I the door close…" and trailing off. The reason is structural, not stylistic: 把 exists precisely to tell you the outcome on the object, so a bare verb leaves the sentence's whole job undone. This page fixes the bare-verb reflex and the two errors that travel with it.
Why the verb can't stand alone
The core meaning of 把 is disposal: you take a definite thing and do something to it that affects or changes it. A bare verb names the action but not what became of the object — and that missing result is the one thing 把 is built to deliver. So the verb must carry something after it. The three commonest ways to supply an outcome are a complement, the aspect particle 了, or verb reduplication.
❌ 我把门关。
Incorrect — the verb is bare; 把 needs to show what happened to the door.
✅ 我把门关上了。
wǒ bǎ mén guānshàng le
I closed the door. — 关上了 states the outcome: shut.
❌ 我把书看。
Incorrect — 看 alone doesn't say what became of the book.
✅ 我把书看完了。
wǒ bǎ shū kàn wán le
I finished reading the book. — 看完了 supplies the result: done.
What counts as an outcome
| What to add after the verb | Example verb phrase | Outcome expressed |
|---|---|---|
| resultative complement (完 / 好 / 干净 / 碎) | 洗干净 | washed clean |
| directional complement (上 / 下 / 进去 / 起来) | 放下 | put down |
| a goal with 在 / 到 / 给 | 放在桌子上 | put onto the table |
| aspect particle 了 | 吃了 | ate up |
| verb reduplication | 打扫打扫 | give it a bit of a clean |
请把书放在桌子上。
qǐng bǎ shū fàng zài zhuōzi shang
Please put the book on the table. (polite) — 放在桌子上 states where the book ends up.
你把这些衣服洗干净。
nǐ bǎ zhèxiē yīfu xǐ gānjìng
Wash these clothes clean. (informal) — 洗干净 gives the result state.
妈妈让我把房间打扫打扫。
māma ràng wǒ bǎ fángjiān dǎsǎo dǎsǎo
Mom told me to give my room a bit of a clean. (informal) — reduplication 打扫打扫 supplies the 'do a bit' outcome.
我不小心把杯子打碎了。
wǒ bù xiǎoxīn bǎ bēizi dǎ suì le
I accidentally broke the cup. (informal) — 打碎了 shows the cup ended up broken.
Negation and modals go before 把, not after
The second big error is dropping 没 or a modal verb after 把. Both belong in front of the whole 把 phrase, because they scope over the entire disposal, not just the verb.
❌ 我把门没关上。
Incorrect — negation belongs before 把.
✅ 我没把门关上。
wǒ méi bǎ mén guānshàng
I didn't close the door. — 没 sits in front of 把.
❌ 我把作业想写完。
Incorrect — the modal belongs before 把.
✅ 我想把作业写完。
wǒ xiǎng bǎ zuòyè xiě wán
I want to finish the homework. — 想 comes before 把.
Some verbs refuse 把 entirely
把 needs a verb that can act on and change its object. Verbs that describe a state rather than a disposal — 是, 有, 喜欢, 知道, 觉得, 认识 — never take 把, no matter what you add. There is nothing being done to the object for 把 to frame.
❌ 我把这本书喜欢。
Incorrect — 喜欢 is a state, not a disposal; it can't take 把.
✅ 我喜欢这本书。
wǒ xǐhuan zhè běn shū
I like this book. — plain S-V-O.
For the full frame and when 把 is required, see the 把 construction; the bare-verb rule has its own page, 把 needs more than a bare verb. Result-bearing complements are covered in resultative complements, negation and modal placement in 把 with negation and modals, and the verbs that reject 把 in verbs forbidden in 把.
Common Mistakes
1. Bare verb — the headline. No complement, no 了, no reduplication.
❌ 我把窗户开。
Incorrect — 开 is bare; add a result.
✅ 我把窗户打开了。
wǒ bǎ chuānghu dǎkāi le
I opened the window. — 打开了 completes it.
2. Negation after 把.
❌ 他把饭没吃完。
Incorrect — 没 belongs before 把.
✅ 他没把饭吃完。
tā méi bǎ fàn chī wán
He didn't finish his food. — 没 in front of 把.
3. Modal after 把.
❌ 你把这件事要记住。
Incorrect — the modal 要 belongs before 把.
✅ 你要把这件事记住。
nǐ yào bǎ zhè jiàn shì jìzhù
You must remember this. — 要 comes first.
4. 把 with a stative verb. 认识, 喜欢, 是, 有 and friends never take 把.
❌ 我把这个字不认识。
Incorrect — 认识 is a state and rejects 把 outright.
✅ 这个字我不认识。
zhège zì wǒ bú rènshi
I don't recognize this character. — front the object as topic instead.
Key Takeaways
- 把 fronts a definite object and must state the outcome on it — a bare verb is always incomplete.
- Supply the outcome with a complement (关上, 洗干净), an aspect 了 (吃了), a goal (放在…上), or reduplication (打扫打扫).
- Negation and modals go before 把 (我没把门关上 / 我想把作业写完), never after it.
- Stative verbs — 是, 有, 喜欢, 知道, 觉得, 认识 — cannot take 把 at all; there is no disposal to frame.

- The 把 Disposal ConstructionHSK 3 — 把 (bǎ) pulls a definite object in front of the verb so the sentence can say what is DONE to it and how it ends up: 我把门关了 (I closed the door), 请把书放在桌子上 (put the book on the table). There's no English equivalent — 把 means 'take this specific thing and dispose of it thus.'
- Resultative Complements 结果补语HSK 2 — A resultative complement 结果补语 welds a second verb or adjective onto the main verb to name the result it achieves — 吃完 (eat up), 听懂 (understand), 看见 (see), 洗干净 (wash clean) — negated with 没, never 不.
- Negation and Modals with 把HSK 4 — In a 把 sentence, negation (不/没) and modals (要/想/能/得/应该) go BEFORE 把, never after: 我没把作业做完, 你应该把门关上 — because 把 + object + verb is one action chunk that they scope over as a whole.
