即使…也… (jíshǐ…yě…) is the concession that lives in the realm of the hypothetical. This is its whole identity, and it is what separates it from every other concessive on this platform. Where 虽然 and 尽管 concede a fact that is actually true, 即使 concedes a situation that is merely supposed — it may never happen. English marks the difference cleanly: "even though it rains" (it is raining) versus "even if it rains" (it might). 即使 is always the second one. Its obligatory partner in the result clause is 也 (still / anyway).
Conceding a supposition
Read 即使…也… as "grant, for the sake of argument, that X — even so, Y." The first clause is a concession you offer conditionally; the 也 clause is the outcome you insist on no matter what.
即使明天下雨,我们也照常出发。
jíshǐ míngtiān xiàyǔ, wǒmen yě zhàocháng chūfā
Even if it rains tomorrow, we'll set off as planned. (the rain hasn't happened — it's supposed)
即使失败了,这次尝试也是值得的。
jíshǐ shībài le, zhè cì chángshì yěshì zhídé de
Even if it fails, this attempt is still worthwhile. (failure is hypothetical)
即使再忙,我也会抽时间给你打电话。
jíshǐ zài máng, wǒ yě huì chōu shíjiān gěi nǐ dǎ diànhuà
No matter how busy I get, I'll still make time to call you. (即使 + 再 + adjective = 'however X')
Notice the last pattern: 即使再 + adjective ("even if it's ever so…") is a fixed and very common way to say "no matter how hard / busy / expensive." The 再 stretches the adjective to its extreme, and 也 delivers the outcome regardless.
即使, 就算, 哪怕: same job, different register
即使 is the neutral-to-formal member. In everyday speech, most people reach for 就算 or 哪怕 instead — they mean the same thing but sound warmer and more colloquial. 哪怕 adds a note of "even in the most extreme case."
| Word | Register | Flavor |
|---|---|---|
| 即使 (jíshǐ) | neutral / written | the standard, slightly formal choice |
| 就算 (jiùsuàn) | colloquial / spoken | "even supposing," casual and common |
| 哪怕 (nǎpà) | colloquial / emphatic | "even if it were only…," stresses an extreme |
就算你现在道歉,我也不会原谅你。
jiùsuàn nǐ xiànzài dàoqiàn, wǒ yě bú huì yuánliàng nǐ
Even if you apologize now, I still won't forgive you. (就算 — spoken, a bit heated)
就算全世界都不相信你,我也相信你。
jiùsuàn quán shìjiè dōu bù xiāngxìn nǐ, wǒ yě xiāngxìn nǐ
Even if the whole world doesn't believe you, I do. (就算 — warm, reassuring)
哪怕只有百分之一的希望,我们也不能放弃。
nǎpà zhǐyǒu bǎi fēn zhī yī de xīwàng, wǒmen yě bùnéng fàngqì
Even if there's only a 1% chance, we can't give up. (哪怕 — emphasizes the extreme minimum)
Fact or supposition? The test that picks the pattern
The choice between this pattern and the "real fact" concessives is not about politeness — it changes what you are claiming about the world. If the conceded thing is true, use 虽然 or 尽管. If it is only imagined, use 即使. When the concession ranges over every possibility rather than one supposed case, Chinese switches to 无论…都… ("no matter what"). And when the "if" has no concessive twist at all — a plain condition — you want 如果…就….
即使他有很多钱,也不一定快乐。
jíshǐ tā yǒu hěn duō qián, yě bù yídìng kuàilè
Even if he had a lot of money, he wouldn't necessarily be happy. (hypothetical — he may not be rich)
Common Mistakes
1. Using 即使 for a fact that is actually true. If the person really is rich, the concession is real, so you need 虽然, not 即使.
❌ 即使他很有钱,可是他不快乐。
Wrong reality — if he really is rich, this must be 虽然他很有钱, 但是他不快乐.
✅ 虽然他很有钱,但是他不快乐。
suīrán tā hěn yǒu qián, dànshì tā bú kuàilè
Although he's rich, he isn't happy. (a stated fact → 虽然)
2. Dropping the obligatory 也. 即使 without 也 leaves the frame open; native speakers hear it as unfinished.
❌ 即使很贵,我要买。
Incomplete — the result clause needs 也: 我也要买.
✅ 即使很贵,我也要买。
jíshǐ hěn guì, wǒ yě yào mǎi
Even if it's expensive, I'm still going to buy it.
3. Using 但是 instead of 也 in the result clause. 但是 belongs to the 虽然 frame; the 即使 frame takes 也.
❌ 即使你不同意,但是我也要做。
Mixed frames — drop 但是: 即使你不同意, 我也要做.
✅ 即使你不同意,我也要做。
jíshǐ nǐ bù tóngyì, wǒ yě yào zuò
Even if you disagree, I'm still going to do it.
Key Takeaways
- 即使/就算/哪怕…也… concedes a hypothetical, not-yet-real situation — "even if," never "even though."
- The result clause requires 也 (before the verb, after the subject).
- 即使 is neutral/written; 就算 and 哪怕 are the colloquial equivalents (哪怕 stresses an extreme).
- Reality test: fact → 虽然/尽管; supposition → 即使; every case → 无论; plain condition → 如果.

- 虽然…但是/可是… (Although…Yet…)HSK 2 — 虽然…但是/可是… (suīrán…dànshì/kěshì) is the paired concession frame: Chinese REQUIRES a 'but' word in the second clause where English forbids it — 虽然很累,但是很开心 'although tired, (yet) happy'.
- 尽管…还是… (Even Though…Still…)HSK 4 — 尽管…还是/仍然… (jǐnguǎn…háishi/réngrán) concedes a real, already-true fact and pairs with 还是 'still': 尽管下着雨,他还是来了 'even though it was raining, he still came'.
- 无论/不管…都… (No Matter…)HSK 3 — 无论/不管/不论…都/也… (wúlùn/bùguǎn/búlùn…dōu/yě) means 'no matter…' — but the first clause MUST contain a question element: 无论多难,都要坚持 'no matter how hard, keep going'.
- 如果/要是/假如…就… (If…Then…)HSK 3 — 如果/要是/假如…就… (rúguǒ/yàoshi/jiǎrú…jiù) is the basic conditional: the 'if' word opens the condition and 就 carries 'then' in the result clause — with no tense change and no subjunctive, the hypothetical stays completely unmarked.
