无论…都… (wúlùn…dōu…) is how Chinese says "no matter what / who / how" — a concession that ranges over every possibility rather than conceding one supposed case (that's 即使). The pattern has one strict structural rule that English does not prepare you for: the clause after 无论 must contain an open variable — a question word, an A-not-A verb, or an "X 还是 Y" choice. You cannot follow 无论 with a plain noun or a flat statement. The second clause then answers with 都 (in all cases) or 也. Think of it as: 无论 opens a range of options, and 都 says "the result holds across all of them."
The iron rule: 无论 needs an open variable
This is the point learners get wrong most, so lead with it. 无论 sets up a range, and something in its clause has to be the range. There are three legal ways to supply it:
| Open variable | Example inside clause 1 | English |
|---|---|---|
| Question word | 无论天气怎么样 | no matter what the weather is like |
| Question word | 无论谁问 | no matter who asks |
| A-not-A form | 不管你去不去 | whether you go or not |
| "X 还是 Y" choice | 不管是咖啡还是茶 | whether it's coffee or tea |
Each of these leaves something unspecified — that open slot is exactly what "no matter" needs. Compare A-not-A questions (去不去) and the indefinite use of question words (谁都 / 什么都), which power this pattern from the inside.
无论天气怎么样,我都会准时到。
wúlùn tiānqì zěnmeyàng, wǒ dōu huì zhǔnshí dào
No matter what the weather is like, I'll arrive on time. (question word 怎么样)
不管你去不去,我都要去。
bùguǎn nǐ qù bú qù, wǒ dōu yào qù
Whether you go or not, I'm going. (A-not-A form 去不去)
不管是咖啡还是茶,我都可以。
bùguǎn shì kāfēi háishi chá, wǒ dōu kěyǐ
Whether it's coffee or tea, either is fine with me. ('X 还是 Y' choice)
Question words as the open variable
The most flexible option is a question word — 谁 (who), 什么 (what), 怎么 (how), 多 (how, before an adjective), 哪 (which). Inside 无论 they lose their questioning force and become "whoever / whatever / however." The 都 in the second clause then sweeps across all values.
无论多难,我们都要坚持下去。
wúlùn duō nán, wǒmen dōu yào jiānchí xiàqù
No matter how hard it is, we'll keep going. (多 + adjective = 'however hard')
不管发生什么事,我都会支持你。
bùguǎn fāshēng shénme shì, wǒ dōu huì zhīchí nǐ
No matter what happens, I'll support you. (什么)
无论谁问,你都别说。
wúlùn shéi wèn, nǐ dōu bié shuō
No matter who asks, don't tell them. (谁 as 'whoever')
Which word, and what pairs with it
无论, 不论, and 不管 are near-identical in meaning; they differ in register. 不管 is the everyday spoken choice; 无论 and 不论 are more formal and written. The second clause almost always takes 都 (in every case) — occasionally 也, especially in negative sentences. For the full scope of sweeping 都, see 都 across a set.
| Opener | Register |
|---|---|
| 不管 (bùguǎn) | colloquial, spoken |
| 无论 (wúlùn) | neutral to formal |
| 不论 (búlùn) | formal, written |
无论如何,我们都要试一试。
wúlùn rúhé, wǒmen dōu yào shì yi shì
No matter what, we have to give it a try. (无论如何 as a set adverb)
不管别人怎么说,你都要相信自己。
bùguǎn biéren zěnme shuō, nǐ dōu yào xiāngxìn zìjǐ
No matter what others say, you have to believe in yourself. (不管 — spoken, encouraging)
Common Mistakes
1. Following 无论 with a flat noun. This is the signature error. 无论 needs an open variable, so a bare noun leaves it ungrammatical.
❌ 无论天气,我都去。
Broken — 天气 is a plain noun with no open variable; add a question word: 无论天气怎么样.
✅ 无论天气怎么样,我都去。
wúlùn tiānqì zěnmeyàng, wǒ dōu qù
No matter what the weather is like, I'll go.
2. Dropping the 都 / 也 in the second clause. The sweeping adverb is not optional — it is what carries "in all cases."
❌ 不管你说什么,我不会改变主意。
Missing the sweep — insert 都: 我都不会改变主意.
✅ 不管你说什么,我都不会改变主意。
bùguǎn nǐ shuō shénme, wǒ dōu bú huì gǎibiàn zhǔyi
No matter what you say, I won't change my mind.
3. Using 但是 in the second clause. 无论 does not pair with the "but" family; its partner is 都/也.
❌ 无论多累,但是我要完成。
Wrong partner — 无论 takes 都, not 但是: 无论多累, 我都要完成.
✅ 无论多累,我都要完成。
wúlùn duō lèi, wǒ dōu yào wánchéng
No matter how tired I am, I'll finish it.
Key Takeaways
- 无论/不管/不论…都/也… = "no matter…," ranging over every possibility.
- The clause after 无论 must carry an open variable: a question word, an A-not-A form, or an X 还是 Y choice — never a plain noun or statement.
- The second clause takes 都 (mostly) or 也; it is obligatory, not decorative.
- Register: 不管 (spoken) · 无论 (neutral–formal) · 不论 (written). Memorize 无论如何 as a ready-made "by all means."

- 即使/就算…也… (Even If…Still…)HSK 4 — 即使/就算/哪怕…也… (jíshǐ/jiùsuàn/nǎpà…yě) is the hypothetical concessive — it concedes a supposed, not-yet-real situation: 即使失败,也要试 'even if it fails, I still want to try'.
- Question Words as 'Any / No' (谁都, 什么都, 哪儿也不)HSK 3 — The same word 什么 that asks 'what?' also means 'anything / something' — the frame around it decides. Put 都/也 after a question word and it turns universal (谁都 'anyone', 什么都 'everything'); add negation and it flips to 'no-one / nothing / nowhere' (什么都没买 'bought nothing').
- A-not-A Questions (是不是, 去不去)HSK 1 — A second neutral way to ask yes/no: juxtapose the positive and negative of the verb or adjective — 去不去, 好不好, 是不是. The middle 不 is toneless, 有 uses 没 (有没有), and you never add 吗.
- 都 (All/Both) and Backward ScopeHSK 1 — 都 (dōu) means 'all / both' but sums up what comes BEFORE it — the plural thing must precede 都 (我们都去, 这些都很贵) — and its position relative to 不 flips the meaning (都不 'none' vs 不都 'not all').
- 只要…就… (As Long As…Then…)HSK 4 — 只要…就… (zhǐyào…jiù) states a SUFFICIENT condition — one thing is enough to guarantee the result: 只要努力,就能成功 'as long as you work hard, you can succeed'. It is the exact mirror of 只有…才 (a necessary condition).
