Inequality of Kind: 跟…不一样

Once you can say two things are the same, saying they're different is one small move: negate 一样. The everyday word for "different / not the same" isn't a separate vocabulary item — it's just 不一样 (bù yíyàng), the negated equality frame. The only thing English speakers reliably get wrong is where the 不 goes: it clamps onto 一样, giving A 跟 B 不一样, and never onto 跟. Get that placement right and you have the single most useful "different" in spoken Chinese.

The frame: A 跟 B 不一样

Take the equality frame 跟…一样 and drop a 不 immediately in front of 一样. Because 一样 begins with a rising-tone syllable (yí), the 不 keeps its full falling tone: bù yíyàng.

AB不一样
我 (I)你 (you)不一样 (are not the same)
他今天 (he, today)平时 (usual)不一样
这两个颜色 (these two colors)不一样 (subject already bundles both)

我跟你不一样,我不喜欢热闹。

wǒ gēn nǐ bù yíyàng, wǒ bù xǐhuan rènao

I'm different from you — I don't like a lively crowd. (informal)

这两个颜色不一样,你看得出来吗?

zhè liǎng ge yánsè bù yíyàng, nǐ kàn de chūlái ma

These two colors are different — can you tell? (informal) — the subject already holds both items, so no 跟 is needed.

他今天跟平时不一样,是不是有心事?

tā jīntiān gēn píngshí bù yíyàng, shì bu shì yǒu xīnshì

He's different today than usual — does he have something on his mind? (informal)

To ask "same or different?", you have two routes: append 吗 to the positive frame (一样吗?), or use the A-not-A question form 一样不一样 — literally "same-not-same," a yes/no question folded into one phrase.

这两个词的意思一样不一样?

zhè liǎng ge cí de yìsi yíyàng bù yíyàng

Do these two words mean the same thing, or not? (neutral) — the A-not-A form 一样不一样 asks it directly.

💡
The 不 negates the sameness, so it lives right before 一样 — never before 跟. 跟 means "with," and putting 不 in front of it (不跟…) says "not with…," which is a completely different sentence about not doing something together. Keep the 不 glued to 一样.

不一样 as a modifier: 不一样的…

不一样 isn't limited to the predicate. Add and it turns attributive, describing a noun directly — "a different X." This is where 不一样 quietly outperforms its bookish cousin 不同:

我想喝点儿不一样的。

wǒ xiǎng hē diǎnr bù yíyàng de

I feel like drinking something different. (informal) — 不一样的 with the noun left unsaid.

这是一种完全不一样的体验。

zhè shì yì zhǒng wánquán bù yíyàng de tǐyàn

This is a completely different kind of experience. (neutral)

南方的米饭跟北方的味道不一样。

nánfāng de mǐfàn gēn běifāng de wèidào bù yíyàng

Rice in the south tastes different from rice in the north. (informal)

Softening it, and the formal alternative

To hedge — "not quite the same" rather than flatly "different" — slip in: 不太一样 (bú tài yíyàng). Note the tone shift: before the falling-tone 太, 不 becomes rising (bú).

中国的习惯跟我们的不太一样。

Zhōngguó de xíguàn gēn wǒmen de bú tài yíyàng

Chinese customs are somewhat different from ours. (neutral) — 不太一样 softens the contrast.

There's also a one-word option, 不同 (tóng), but it belongs to a higher register. Compare:

FormPinyinRegister
不一样bù yíyàng(informal) — the everyday spoken default
不太一样bú tài yíyàng(informal) — softened, 'not quite the same'
不同bùtóng(formal), (academic) — writing, reports, 不同的意见

每个人的想法都不一样。

měi ge rén de xiǎngfǎ dōu bù yíyàng

Everyone thinks differently. (informal) — spoken; a written report might prefer 各不相同 or 不同.

💡
不一样 and 不同 mean the same thing, but 不同 sounds like an essay. In conversation, 不一样 is what natives reach for; save 不同 (and its formal siblings 不同的、相异) for writing and formal speech.

Common Mistakes

1. Putting 不 before 跟. The negation belongs to 一样. 不跟… reads as "not with…," which changes the meaning entirely.

❌ 我不跟你一样。

Wrong for 'I'm different from you' — 不跟 sounds like 'not together with you'. Say 我跟你不一样.

✅ 我跟你不一样。

wǒ gēn nǐ bù yíyàng

I'm different from you. (informal)

2. Negating with 没 instead of 不. 一样 is a stative adjective; adjectives are negated by 不, not 没 (which negates 有 and completed actions).

❌ 我跟你没一样。

Wrong — a stative adjective takes 不, not 没: 我跟你不一样.

✅ 我跟你不一样。

wǒ gēn nǐ bù yíyàng

I'm different from you. (informal)

3. Dropping 的 in the attributive. When 不一样 modifies a noun, it needs 的.

❌ 我想喝不一样饮料。

Wrong — a describing 不一样 needs 的: 一杯不一样的饮料.

✅ 我想喝一杯不一样的饮料。

wǒ xiǎng hē yì bēi bù yíyàng de yǐnliào

I want to drink a different beverage. (informal)

4. Using 比 to say 'different'. 比 is only for "more/less"; difference of kind is 跟…不一样.

❌ 我比你不一样。

Wrong — 比 can't express 'different'. Use 我跟你不一样.

✅ 我跟你不一样。

wǒ gēn nǐ bù yíyàng

I'm different from you. (informal)

Key Takeaways

  • "Different / not the same" is just the negated equality frame: A 跟 B 不一样.
  • 不 glues to 一样, never to 跟 — 不跟… means "not with…," a different sentence.
  • Add to modify a noun: 不一样的味道 (a different taste).
  • Soften with 不太一样 ("not quite the same"); note the sandhi bú tài yíyàng.
  • 不一样 is the spoken default; 不同 (formal, academic) is its written-register twin.

  • Equality: 跟…一样HSK 2跟…一样 (gēn…yíyàng) is how Chinese says 'the same as / as…as': A 跟 B 一样 (+ adjective) puts two things on equal footing — 我跟你一样高 'I'm as tall as you', 这个跟那个一样 'this is the same as that'.
  • Similes with 像…一样HSK 3一样 doesn't only equate two definite things — with 像 it builds vivid similes: 像雪一样白 'white as snow', 他像孩子一样天真 'as naive as a child', 像鸟一样飞 'fly like a bird'. The productive simile needs both 像 and 一样.
  • 不 Tone Sandhi (bù → bú)HSK 1When you negate with 不, watch the tone: 不 is bù (4th tone) before 1st/2nd/3rd tones, but shifts to bú (2nd tone) before a 4th tone — 不是 bú shì, 不要 bú yào, 不对 bú duì. It's automatic, not a spelling change.
  • 口语 vs 书面语 — The Core Register AxisHSK 4The central stylistic split in Chinese is 口语 (kǒuyǔ, spoken) vs 书面语 (shūmiànyǔ, written): the same idea has a casual form and a literary form. 现在 (now) vs 目前/如今; 但是 (but) vs 然而. It is not politeness — it is 'get' vs 'obtain'.
