The equality frame 跟…一样 equates two definite things — you and me, this phone and that one. Swap 跟 for 像 (xiàng, "resemble / be like") and the same 一样 turns into a simile: instead of matching B exactly, A is likened to a vivid image. 像雪一样白 (white as snow) doesn't claim the thing is snow — it borrows snow's whiteness as a yardstick. This is the Chinese equivalent of English "as … as" with a metaphor, and it is one of the most natural ways to make description come alive. The key structural fact: the productive simile needs both 像 and 一样 — drop either and it collapses.
The simile frame: 像 + image + 一样 (+ quality)
The full pattern is 像 + [image] + 一样 + [adjective/verb]. 像 introduces what you're comparing to; 一样 closes the comparison; the quality comes last. Read literally: "resembling snow, [of] one kind — white."
| 像 | image | 一样 | quality | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 像 | 雪 (snow) | 一样 | 白 (white) | white as snow |
| 像 | 冰 (ice) | 一样 | 凉 (cold) | cold as ice |
| 像 | 孩子 (a child) | 一样 | 天真 (naive) | as naive as a child |
| 像 | 鸟 (a bird) | 一样 | 飞 (fly) — verb | fly like a bird |
她的皮肤像雪一样白。
tā de pífū xiàng xuě yíyàng bái
Her skin is as white as snow. (neutral, descriptive)
他像孩子一样天真。
tā xiàng háizi yíyàng tiānzhēn
He's as naive as a child. (neutral)
她的手像冰一样凉。
tā de shǒu xiàng bīng yíyàng liáng
Her hands are as cold as ice. (informal)
像…一样 before a verb — "like / in the manner of"
Slot a verb instead of an adjective after 一样 and the simile turns adverbial: A does something in the manner of B. English does the same with "like a bird," "like the wind."
孩子们像小鸟一样在草地上跑来跑去。
háizimen xiàng xiǎoniǎo yíyàng zài cǎodì shang pǎo lái pǎo qù
The children ran around the lawn like little birds. (neutral, literary)
他跑得像风一样快。
tā pǎo de xiàng fēng yíyàng kuài
He runs as fast as the wind. (informal) — the simile can also ride on a 得 complement.
时间像流水一样,一去不回。
shíjiān xiàng liúshuǐ yíyàng, yí qù bù huí
Time is like flowing water — gone and never returning. (literary)
That last example shows the barest form: 像 + image + 一样 with no following quality at all. Standing alone, it simply means "is like X." The set phrase 像往常一样 (as usual) works the same way:
像往常一样,他七点就到了办公室。
xiàng wǎngcháng yíyàng, tā qī diǎn jiù dào le bàngōngshì
As usual, he got to the office at seven. (neutral) — 像往常一样 is a fixed adverbial.
Relatives: 好像, 就像, and 像…似的
Several everyday expressions are built from the same 像. 好像 (hǎoxiàng) means "it seems / as if"; 就像 (jiùxiàng) is an emphatic "just like"; and colloquial speech often swaps the closing 一样 for 似的 (shìde) with no change in meaning.
这里的生活就像做梦一样。
zhèlǐ de shēnghuó jiùxiàng zuòmèng yíyàng
Life here is just like a dream. (informal) — 就 intensifies the likeness.
他吓得脸白得像纸似的。
tā xià de liǎn bái de xiàng zhǐ shìde
He was so scared his face went as white as a sheet of paper. (informal) — 似的 is the spoken twin of 一样.
Common Mistakes
1. Dropping 一样 after the image. The productive simile needs the closing 一样. (Fixed compounds like 雪白 "snow-white" exist as single words, but you can't freely build 像 + noun + adjective without 一样.)
❌ 他像孩子天真。
Incomplete — the simile needs its closing bracket: 他像孩子一样天真.
✅ 他像孩子一样天真。
tā xiàng háizi yíyàng tiānzhēn
He's as naive as a child. (neutral)
2. Inserting 是 before 像. 像 is itself the verb ("resemble"); it needs no 是 in front of it.
❌ 她的手是像冰一样凉。
Wrong — 像 already carries the verb. Drop 是: 她的手像冰一样凉.
✅ 她的手像冰一样凉。
tā de shǒu xiàng bīng yíyàng liáng
Her hands are as cold as ice. (informal)
3. Using 一样 alone for a simile, without 像. 一样 by itself equates definite things; a simile against a vivid image needs 像 to open it.
❌ 他孩子一样天真。
Wrong — a simile opens with 像: 他像孩子一样天真.
✅ 他像孩子一样天真。
tā xiàng háizi yíyàng tiānzhēn
He's as naive as a child. (neutral)
4. Putting 一样 before the image. 一样 closes the comparison, so it follows the image, not precedes it.
❌ 她的皮肤像一样雪白。
Wrong order — 一样 comes after the image: 像雪一样白.
✅ 她的皮肤像雪一样白。
tā de pífū xiàng xuě yíyàng bái
Her skin is as white as snow. (neutral)
Key Takeaways
- 像 + image + 一样 (+ quality) builds a simile — "like / as … as": 像雪一样白 (white as snow).
- The productive simile needs both 像 and 一样; dropping either breaks it (fixed compounds like 雪白 are the exception).
- Follow 一样 with an adjective ("as white as") or a verb ("fly like a bird"), or leave it bare for a plain "is like X."
- 像 is already the verb — no 是 in front of it.
- Related: 好像 ("it seems"), 就像 ("just like"), and the colloquial 像…似的 (= 像…一样).

- Equality: 跟…一样HSK 2 — 跟…一样 (gēn…yíyàng) is how Chinese says 'the same as / as…as': A 跟 B 一样 (+ adjective) puts two things on equal footing — 我跟你一样高 'I'm as tall as you', 这个跟那个一样 'this is the same as that'.
- Inequality of Kind: 跟…不一样HSK 2 — 不一样 (bù yíyàng) is 'different / not the same': A 跟 B 不一样 — 我跟你不一样 'I'm different from you'. The 不 attaches to 一样, not to 跟, and 不一样的 can modify a noun directly (不一样的味道 'a different taste').
- Adjectives as Manner Adverbs (地)HSK 3 — Add 地 (de) to an adjective to turn it into a manner adverb before the verb — 认真地学习 (study hard), 高兴地说 (say happily), 慢慢地走 (walk slowly) — the Chinese equivalent of the English '-ly' slot.
