Conjugation of resoldre

Resoldre means “to solve, resolve, settle” and, in (formal/legal) language, “to decide or rule.” It covers a practical problem, a mathematical exercise, a doubt, a dispute, or an administrative proceeding. English speakers should not model it on Spanish resolver: Catalan has neither present diphthongs nor a participle in -uelto.

Its principal parts are resolc – resolia – resolguí – resoldré – resolgui – resolgués – resolt. These reveal three important changes: a velar -g- family, a future stem resoldr-, and the short irregular participle resolt. No productive tense is missing; the challenge is choosing the right stem rather than filling gaps.

💡
The compact chain resolc – resolgui – resoldré – resolt prevents the three most common transfers: Spanish-style resuelvo, regularized resolveré, and invented participles such as resolut.

Present resol is both third-person indicative and second-person singular imperative; the surrounding clause distinguishes them. The d of the infinitive is absent in resolc, resols, and resolia but returns in future and conditional resoldr-. The simple past is (formal/literary) in most Central usage, whereas the periphrastic past is neutral in speech.

All compound forms use haver + resolt. The past anterior and periphrastic vaig/vas/va/vam/vau/van haver resolt are now mostly (formal/literary). The characteristic everyday collocation tenir una cosa resolta uses resolt adjectivally and therefore permits agreement: Ja tenim resoltes les reserves.

We have finally fixed the heating fault.

A finals de setmana ja hauran resolt totes les reclamacions pendents.

The velar stem resolgu- runs through the general-standard subjunctive, following the wider pattern described under velar stems. The restricted (regional/formal) periphrastic subjunctives are vagi/vagis/vagi/vàgim/vàgiu/vagin resoldre and vagi... haver resolt. With affirmative commands, object pronouns follow the verb (resol-ho); with negatives, they precede it (no ho resolguis).

Necessitem que resolgueu aquesta incidència abans d'obrir la botiga.

We need you to resolve this issue before the shop opens.

Resol-ho avui i demà podràs desconnectar de debò.

Sort it out today and tomorrow you will really be able to switch off.

Si ho haguéssim resolt a temps, no hauríem perdut la reserva.

Objects, decisions, and semantic contrasts

In its everyday senses, resoldre is transitive: resoldre un problema, un dubte, un enigma, una avaria, un conflicte. The direct object becomes el, la, els, les, or neutral ho. English often uses a particle verb—“sort it out”—where Catalan simply places the clitic before a finite verb or after an infinitive or affirmative command: ho resoldrem; podem resoldre-ho; resol-ho.

—Qui s'encarrega del permís? —Ho resoldré jo mateix aquest matí.

—Who is dealing with the permit? —I will sort it out myself this morning.

In (formal/legal/administrative) language, resoldre can mean “decide, rule on, issue a resolution”: el tribunal resol el recurs; l'administració resol que.... The subject is the deciding body, while the case or request is the direct object. Resoldre a favor de / en contra de identifies the beneficiary or adverse party. This is more institutional than everyday decidir.

Pronominal resoldre's means “to be resolved” or presents the outcome without naming an agent: El malentès es va resoldre parlant. This is not a free substitute for transitive resoldre. Compare la tècnica va resoldre l'error with l'error es va resoldre. In the second sentence, l'error is the thing resolved, not an agent acting reflexively.

El problema es va resoldre quan vam reiniciar el servidor.

The problem was resolved when we restarted the server.

Solucionar overlaps with practical “solve,” and decidir overlaps with “decide,” but resoldre spans both domains. Aclarir un dubte is often more conversational than resoldre un dubte; resoldre una equació and resoldre un recurs are fixed, precise collocations.

(Regional: Valencian) standard present subjunctive forms are resolga, resolgues, resolga, resolguem, resolgueu, resolguen, with imperfect resolguera.... Central resolgui / resolgués is the baseline. No major standard uses Spanish-style present diphthongs.

💡
Use resoldre when a difficulty reaches an answer or an institution reaches a ruling. Use decidir for an ordinary choice and arreglar for repairing or informally sorting out something.

❌ La directora s'ha resolt la queixa personalment.

Incorrect for an agent solving an object—the transitive construction takes no reflexive pronoun.

The director handled the complaint personally.

Key Takeaways

Anchor resoldre with resolc, resolgu-, resoldr- and resolt. Keep the participle unchanged after haver, attach object clitics only where Catalan syntax requires them, and reserve pronominal resoldre's for an outcome presented without an external agent. Spanish resolver does not supply the Catalan paradigm.
