Conjugation of produir

Produir means “to produce, manufacture, generate, cause” and, in frequent produir-se, “to occur.” Its Central present alternates produeix- in the stressed cells with produï- in produïm, produïu. Outside the present system, the stem is produ- plus regular third-conjugation endings, but spelling must mark the hiatus in forms such as produïa, produït, and produïssin.

This is not the Spanish produzco/produje pattern. Catalan uses no -zc- and no preterite j. The useful principal parts are produeixo – produïm – produí – produiré – produeixi – produís – produït. They turn an apparently difficult verb into two predictable zones.

💡
The diaeresis is not decoration: it shows that the i begins its own syllable after u. When the ordinary accentuation rules require an acute accent on that vowel, the accent itself marks the hiatus and replaces the diaeresis: compare produïa with produíem.

Review the general diaeresis rules if the written contrast between produïa and produíem is unfamiliar; the present distribution belongs to the wider incoative pattern.

Nonfinite forms

Infinitiveproduirto produce; to cause
Perfect infinitivehaver produïtto have produced
Gerundproduintproducing; causing
Perfect gerundhavent produïthaving produced
Participleproduït; produïda, produïts, produïdesproduced

The gerund is produint, not produeixent: the present extension does not enter nonfinite forms. The participle keeps its diaeresis and is invariable with haver (han produït tres documentals) but agrees in passive or adjectival use (tres sèries produïdes a Girona).

Produir is not defective: all six persons are available throughout the productive indicative and subjunctive paradigms, and the usual five addressee forms occur in the imperative.

The present extension appears in the singular and third-person plural, not in produïm/produïu. Future and conditional are built on the full infinitive. The periphrastic past is neutral conversational narration; the simple past is especially (formal/literary) in Central Catalan and remains alive in several regional varieties. First- and third-person simple past are both produí.

This plant produces electricity for the whole neighborhood.

We produce each episode on a very tight budget.

The past anterior is mainly (formal/literary). The periphrastic anterior is vaig haver produït, vas haver produït, va haver produït, vam haver produït, vau haver produït, van haver produït. Weak pronouns precede the finite auxiliary: La peça l'han produïda aquí is possible with traditional agreement, while invariable l'han produït aquí is broadly neutral.

This winter the panels have produced more energy than expected.

Without that breakdown, the factory would have produced ten thousand more units.

The periphrastic subjunctive past is vagi produir, vagis produir, vagi produir, vàgim produir, vàgiu produir, vagin produir; its anterior adds haver produït. It has restricted (regional/formal) distribution. Notice the spelling contrast inside the imperfect: acute-accented produís but diaeresis-marked produïssis.

Imperative

AddresseeAffirmativeNegative
tuprodueixno produeixis
vostèprodueixino produeixi
nosaltresproduïmno produïm
vosaltresproduïuno produïu
vostèsprodueixinno produeixin

Affirmative imperatives attach pronouns (produeix-lo, produïu-ne més); negative ones put them first (no el produeixis). Direct commands are most natural in manufacturing, scientific, or creative instructions rather than everyday conversation.

Produce only as much of it as we can sell this week.

Producing, causing, and occurring

Transitive produir can name a tangible product, an artistic work, energy, income, a bodily substance, or an effect. Characteristic collocations include produir energia, produir aliments, produir una pel·lícula, produir beneficis, produir saliva, and produir efecte. A definite object takes an ordinary direct-object clitic (aquest soroll produeix aquestes molèsties → aquest soroll les produeix), while an indefinite quantified object takes en: aquest soroll produeix moltes molèsties → aquest soroll en produeix moltes.

The change in medication has caused him/her dizziness and drowsiness.

Here li marks the experiencer, while mareig i somnolència are what was caused. English often uses “make someone feel,” but Catalan productively uses produir + effect + a algú. Do not analyze the experiencer as the direct object.

Pronominal produir-se commonly presents an event as occurring: es va produir una fuita; s'han produït canvis. In plural, agreement (s'han produït canvis) shows that canvis is the subject of this inchoative pronominal construction, not the object of an impersonal singular. This construction is especially frequent in (formal/news/academic) registers; everyday speech often prefers passar for an ordinary event. The dictionary also records pronominal produir-se for presenting or conducting oneself, but that use is marked and uncommon in current everyday speech.

The incident occurred shortly after midnight.

💡
Use active X produeix Y when X causes or manufactures Y. Use es produeix Y when the discourse presents Y as an event that occurs without naming a causer.

(Regional: Valencian) the present may use produïsc, alongside produeixes/produïxes, produeix/produïx, and third-person plural produeixen/produïxen; subjunctive produïsca... is standard. The Central table is broadly understood everywhere, but regional series should remain internally consistent.

Common Mistakes

❌ La cooperativa produeixem oli ecològic.

Incorrect—the subject is third-person singular, so the verb must be produeix.

Incorrect—the first-person plural has no -eix- and requires a diaeresis.

This workshop produces a hundred pieces a day, and we produce fifty.

A serious breakdown occurred yesterday.

❌ L'avaria va produir-se un retard considerable.

Incorrect—the occurrence construction produir-se cannot also take a caused event as its direct object.

✅ L'avaria va produir un retard considerable.

The breakdown caused a considerable delay.

Key Takeaways

The Central present alternates produeixo with produïm; all non-present forms reject -eix-. Preserve the hiatus spellings produïa, produís, and produït. Active produir takes a direct object for the product or effect, while frequent produir-se presents an event as occurring.
