Conjugation of conduir

Conduir means “to drive,” “to lead,” and, in technical contexts, “to conduct.” In the Central standard its stressed present forms use condueix- (condueixo, condueixes, condueix, condueixen), whereas first- and second-person plural are conduïm, conduïu. Non-present forms use the condu- stem, with hiatus marked where spelling requires it.

English “drive” encourages learners to focus only on vehicles, but Catalan conduir also links a route or action to a destination or result: aquest passadís condueix al pati; la negligència pot conduir a un desastre. The same argument pattern explains literal “lead someone somewhere” and abstract “lead to.”

💡
Use the principal parts condueixo – conduïm – conduí – conduiré – condueixi – conduís – conduït. Catalan has neither Spanish-style conduzco nor a conduj- past stem.

The same distribution is taught systematically under incoative -ir verbs; the spelling of conduïm and conduït follows the general diaeresis rules.

The gerund conduint has no -eix- and no diaeresis. The participle conduït needs one to keep u and i in separate syllables. It is invariable after haver (han conduït moltes hores) but agrees as an adjective or in a passive (una investigació conduïda amb rigor).

Conduir is not defective: all six persons are available throughout the productive indicative and subjunctive paradigms, and the usual five addressee forms occur in the imperative.

Only the present singular and third-person plural show -eix-. Future and conditional use the complete infinitive conduir-. The periphrastic past is the unmarked conversational past; the simple past is prominent in (formal/literary) narrative and remains spoken in several regions. First- and third-person singular conduí are identical.

Normalment condueixo jo perquè la Mariona es mareja.

I normally drive because Mariona gets carsick.

Quan conduïu de nit, pareu cada dues hores.

The past anterior is mostly (formal/literary). Its periphrastic counterpart is vaig haver conduït, vas haver conduït, va haver conduït, vam haver conduït, vau haver conduït, van haver conduït. Clitics stand before the auxiliary: L'he conduït fins a l'hotel, not he conduït-lo.

Avui he conduït més de quatre-cents quilòmetres i necessito descansar.

Today I've driven more than four hundred kilometers and I need to rest.

Si haguéssim sortit abans, no hauríem conduït enmig d'aquesta tempesta.

The periphrastic subjunctive past is vagi conduir, vagis conduir, vagi conduir, vàgim conduir, vàgiu conduir, vagin conduir; the anterior adds haver conduït. This series is restricted (regional/formal). In the imperfect, an acute accent marks both stress and hiatus in conduís; conduïssis takes a diaeresis because ordinary accentuation rules do not require an acute accent there.

No vull que condueixis si has pres aquest medicament.

I don't want you to drive if you've taken this medication.

No semblava que aquella drecera conduís al mateix punt.

Affirmative commands attach clitics (condueix-lo, conduïu-nos-hi), while negative commands put them before the verb (no el condueixis). The direct object can be a vehicle, a person being escorted, or a process being directed.

Condueix-lo a urgències si el dolor no disminueix.

Drive him to the emergency department if the pain doesn't ease.

Driving, leading, and conducting

For road transport, conduir may be used transitively (conduir un autobús) or absolutely (encara no sé conduir). The standard collocation for a driving licence is permís de conduir; carnet de conduir is widespread (informal). Catalan also uses portar el cotxe in some conversational contexts, but conduir is the neutral verb and the one used in official or technical language.

With a person or group, conduir algú a/fins a un lloc means to lead, escort, or drive them there. The person is a direct object (el/la/els/les), and the destination uses a or fins a. With an inanimate subject, conduir a expresses an outcome: la conversa va conduir a un acord. Omitting a before the result makes the structure incomplete.

Mesos de negociació van conduir a un acord que ningú no esperava.

Months of negotiation led to an agreement that nobody expected.

Scientific and technical Catalan uses conduir for heat, electricity, or fluids: el coure condueix bé l'electricitat. In (formal/academic) prose it can also mean directing a study, meeting, or inquiry, though dirigir is often more idiomatic for an institution or team. The collocation conduir una investigació is possible but should not be copied mechanically from English “conduct” in every context.

Aquest material condueix la calor sense deformar-se.

This material conducts heat without deforming.

Pronominal conduir-se meaning “behave or conduct oneself” exists, especially in (formal/literary) language: es va conduir amb discreció. Everyday Catalan normally prefers comportar-se. It is not a freely interchangeable version of ordinary conduir: “I drive carefully” is condueixo amb prudència, not em condueixo amb prudència.

💡
Use no preposition before the thing or person driven or led, but use a/fins a before the destination or result: conduir el grup fins al refugi; conduir a una conclusió.

(Regional: Valencian) forms include first-person conduïsc, present variants condueixes/conduïxes and condueix/conduïx, and subjunctive conduïsca.... These are systematic Valencian forms; keep them distinct from the Central condueixo/condueixi series.

Incorrect for ordinary driving—conduir is not pronominal in this sense.

I drive carefully when it rains.

Key Takeaways

The Central present alternates condueixo with conduïm; non-present forms never take -eix-. Preserve the hiatus spellings: conduïa and conduït take a diaeresis, while conduís takes an acute accent. Use conduir directly with a vehicle or person, but introduce a destination or abstract result with a/fins a. Pronominal conduir-se is limited and formal.
