Morir means “to die.” Its finite endings largely follow a pure -ir verb, but the participle is the short irregular form mort, and Catalan also uses the pronominal variant morir-se. English speakers therefore need two distinctions: Catalan says ha mort with haver, never an English-shaped passive, and the pronoun in s'ha mort typically presents death as the outcome of a subject-internal process such as illness or aging rather than merely reporting the event.
Nonfinite forms
| Form | Catalan | English guide |
|---|---|---|
| Infinitive | morir | to die |
| Perfect infinitive | haver mort | to have died |
| Gerund | morint | dying |
| Perfect gerund | havent mort | having died |
| Participle | mort; morta, morts, mortes | died; dead |
In compound tenses, mort is fixed: les plantes han mort. As an adjective, however, it agrees: les plantes són mortes. This contrast is especially important because English “dead” is always adjectival, whereas Catalan mort can be either a perfect participle after haver or a result adjective after ser/estar. General rules appear under participle formation.
Indicative: simple and periphrastic tenses
| Tense | jo | tu | ell / ella / vostè | nosaltres | vosaltres | ells / elles / vostès |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Present | moro | mors | mor | morim | moriu | moren |
| Imperfect | moria | mories | moria | moríem | moríeu | morien |
| Periphrastic past | vaig morir | vas morir | va morir | vam morir | vau morir | van morir |
| Simple past | morí | morires | morí | morírem | moríreu | moriren |
| Future | moriré | moriràs | morirà | morirem | morireu | moriran |
| Conditional | moriria | moriries | moriria | moriríem | moriríeu | moririen |
Unlike servir, morir is not incoative: there is no moreixo or morisc in the general standard. The first- and third-person singular simple past are both morí; only context supplies the subject when it is omitted. The periphrastic past is the ordinary conversational choice, while the simple series is especially (formal/literary) in much Central Catalan and remains more alive in some regional standards.
A l'hivern, moltes plantes del balcó moren si no les resguardem del fred.
In winter, many balcony plants die if we don't protect them from the cold.
L'olivera centenària va morir després de dos estius sense prou aigua.
The century-old olive tree died after two summers without enough water.
Sense una inversió urgent, moltes botigues del centre moriran en pocs anys.
Without urgent investment, many shops in the town center will die out within a few years.
Indicative: compound tenses
| Tense | jo | tu | ell / ella / vostè | nosaltres | vosaltres | ells / elles / vostès |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Present perfect | he mort | has mort | ha mort | hem mort | heu mort | han mort |
| Pluperfect | havia mort | havies mort | havia mort | havíem mort | havíeu mort | havien mort |
| Past anterior | haguí mort | hagueres mort | hagué mort | haguérem mort | haguéreu mort | hagueren mort |
| Future perfect | hauré mort | hauràs mort | haurà mort | haurem mort | haureu mort | hauran mort |
| Conditional perfect | hauria mort | hauries mort | hauria mort | hauríem mort | hauríeu mort | haurien mort |
Catalan compound tenses always take haver, including verbs of change of state. The older past anterior is restricted mainly to (formal/literary) sequencing. Present perfect ha mort can report a recent death; va morir presents a bounded past event.
S'ha mort l'alfàbrega que ens vas regalar; l'hem regada massa.
The basil plant you gave us has died; we overwatered it.
Quan els bombers hi van arribar, el foc ja havia mort per falta d'oxigen.
When the firefighters arrived, the fire had already died for lack of oxygen.
Subjunctive and restricted periphrastic forms
| Tense | jo | tu | ell / ella / vostè | nosaltres | vosaltres | ells / elles / vostès |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Present | mori | moris | mori | morim | moriu | morin |
| Imperfect | morís | morissis | morís | moríssim | moríssiu | morissin |
| Present perfect | hagi mort | hagis mort | hagi mort | hàgim mort | hàgiu mort | hagin mort |
| Pluperfect | hagués mort | haguessis mort | hagués mort | haguéssim mort | haguéssiu mort | haguessin mort |
The forms morim and moriu are identical in present indicative and present subjunctive. A trigger such as no vull que makes the mood clear. English commonly uses the same bare verb after “that”; Catalan marks the dependent event through the subjunctive system.
No vull que aquesta tradició mori quan tanqui l'últim obrador.
I don't want this tradition to die when the last workshop closes.
Si no haguessin mort les arrels, el llimoner hauria rebrotat.
If the roots had not died, the lemon tree would have sprouted again.
For reference, the periphrastic past anterior is vaig/vas/va/vam/vau/van haver mort. The periphrastic subjunctive past has vagi/vagis/vagi/vàgim/vàgiu/vagin morir; its anterior adds haver mort. These paradigms are (regional/formal), not neutral conversational defaults.
Imperative and the meaning of morir-se
| Addressee | Affirmative | Negative |
|---|---|---|
| tu | mor | no moris |
| vostè | mori | no mori |
| nosaltres | morim | no morim |
| vosaltres | moriu | no moriu |
| vostès | morin | no morin |
Commands with literal death are normally hostile or dramatic, so they are chiefly (literary), (vulgar), or metaphorical. In ordinary advice, negative forms can be playful: No et moris de fred: agafa una jaqueta. With affirmative commands, the reflexive pronoun follows (mor-te); with negative commands it precedes (no et moris).
Plain morir and pronominal morir-se overlap, but they are not freely interchangeable in every context. Plain morir neutrally reports the change of state and is preferred in formal notices, history, and objective reporting. Standard morir-se foregrounds the internal process that leads to death, typically illness or aging; many contexts allow either form, but the chosen perspective differs. The pronoun is lexical/aspectual, not a direct object and not an English-style reflexive action.
El meu avi va morir l'any 2018, després d'una malaltia molt curta.
My grandfather died in 2018, after a very short illness.
Se'ns ha mort el peix que cuidàvem durant les vacances.
The fish we were looking after during the holidays has died on us.
The second example contains both se from morir-se and ethical/affected ens: se'ns ha mort. That cluster expresses that the death affects “us”; it does not mean that “we died.” Fixed hyperboles such as morir-se de riure, de por, de gana, and de vergonya are overwhelmingly (informal) and normally pronominal.
Quan va veure el pastís amb la seva cara impresa, es va morir de riure.
When she saw the cake with her face printed on it, she died laughing.
Complements, collocations, and regional forms
The characteristic cause frame is morir de + illness/cause: morir de càncer, de fred, de gana. Use morir per + cause or principle when the cause is framed as the reason, agency, or cause defended: morir per una infecció; morir per la llibertat. Context creates overlap, but a is not the normal governed preposition in either pattern.
Molts arbres van morir de set durant la sequera, no pas per una plaga.
Many trees died of thirst during the drought, not from a pest.
In the Central baseline the present begins moro, mors, mor. (Regional: Valencian) also admits mor/muir and present subjunctive mora/muira..., with -ra imperfects such as morira. (Regional: Balearic) has standard variants muiri in parts of the present subjunctive and moriguem, morigueu. Northwestern and Northern standards may retain regional combinations documented by the IEC. The general written forms in the tables are accepted across the domain.
Common Mistakes
❌ Les tomaqueres han morit perquè ningú no les ha regades.
Incorrect—the participle is mort, not the regularized morit.
✅ Les tomaqueres han mort perquè ningú no les ha regades aquesta setmana.
The tomato plants have died because nobody watered them this week.
❌ La notícia diu que l'escriptor s'ha mort el 1997.
Poor register choice—a dated biographical fact in formal reporting normally uses plain morir and the periphrastic past.
✅ La notícia diu que l'escriptor va morir el 1997 a Perpinyà.
The report says that the writer died in Perpignan in 1997.
❌ Si la planta moreix, la canviarem de lloc.
Incorrect—morir is a pure -ir verb, not an incoative verb.
✅ Si veiem que la planta es mor, la canviarem de lloc abans no sigui massa tard.
If we see that the plant is dying, we'll move it before it's too late.
❌ Es va morir a una infecció inesperada.
Incorrect cause preposition—use de or per according to how the cause is framed.
✅ Va morir d'una infecció inesperada després de l'operació.
He died of an unexpected infection after the operation.
Key Takeaways
Most finite forms keep the transparent stem mor-; memorize the irregular participle mort. Form every compound tense with haver, and distinguish invariant perfect han mort from agreeing adjective són mortes. Plain morir neutrally reports the event; morir-se foregrounds an internal process and is usual in fixed hyperboles, but its pronoun is meaningful rather than optional decoration.
