Donar begins with literal transfer—“to give”—but extends to effects (donar resultat), support, permission, news, views, measurements, and many fixed expressions. Morphologically it is a regular first-conjugation verb in the general standard. Its difficulty is syntactic: learners must keep track of the thing given, the recipient, the weak-pronoun order, and the noun that selects donar rather than fer.
Nonfinite forms
| Form | Catalan | English guide |
|---|---|---|
| Infinitive | donar | to give |
| Perfect infinitive | haver donat | to have given |
| Gerund | donant | giving |
| Perfect gerund | havent donat | having given |
| Participle | donat; donada, donats, donades | given |
In compound tenses, donat is normally invariable: hem donat les claus a la portera. An agreeing participle is adjectival or passive: una oportunitat donada a temps. Do not confuse infinitive donar with the less productive verb dar, preserved in a few forms and set expressions such as Déu-n'hi-do; donar is the ordinary full verb.
Indicative: simple and periphrastic tenses
| Tense | jo | tu | ell / ella / vostè | nosaltres | vosaltres | ells / elles / vostès |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Present | dono | dones | dona | donem | doneu | donen |
| Imperfect | donava | donaves | donava | donàvem | donàveu | donaven |
| Periphrastic past | vaig donar | vas donar | va donar | vam donar | vau donar | van donar |
| Simple past | doní | donares | donà | donàrem | donàreu | donaren |
| Future | donaré | donaràs | donarà | donarem | donareu | donaran |
| Conditional | donaria | donaries | donaria | donaríem | donaríeu | donarien |
Current spelling writes third-person dona without a diacritical accent. Context distinguishes dona “gives” from dona “woman.” The imperfect needs the written accents donàvem, donàveu. Everyday completed narration uses vaig donar; the synthetic past is chiefly (formal/literary) in much Central usage and remains spoken in some Valencian and Balearic areas (regional).
Cada tardor dono la roba que ja no faig servir a una entitat del barri.
Every autumn I give the clothes I no longer use to a neighborhood organization.
Abans ens donaven el rebut en paper; ara l'envien per correu electrònic.
They used to give us the receipt on paper; now they send it by email.
La directora va donar una resposta clara abans que s'acabés la reunió.
The director gave a clear answer before the meeting ended.
Si m'envies l'esborrany avui, demà et donaré la meva opinió.
If you send me the draft today, I'll give you my opinion tomorrow.
Compound tenses and subjunctive
All compound tenses use haver + donat. The past anterior is (formal/literary); the present perfect, pluperfect, future perfect, and conditional perfect are fully current.
| Indicative tense | jo | tu | ell / ella / vostè | nosaltres | vosaltres | ells / elles / vostès |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Present perfect | he donat | has donat | ha donat | hem donat | heu donat | han donat |
| Pluperfect | havia donat | havies donat | havia donat | havíem donat | havíeu donat | havien donat |
| Past anterior | haguí donat | hagueres donat | hagué donat | haguérem donat | haguéreu donat | hagueren donat |
| Future perfect | hauré donat | hauràs donat | haurà donat | haurem donat | haureu donat | hauran donat |
| Conditional perfect | hauria donat | hauries donat | hauria donat | hauríem donat | hauríeu donat | haurien donat |
| Subjunctive tense | jo | tu | ell / ella / vostè | nosaltres | vosaltres | ells / elles / vostès |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Present | doni | donis | doni | donem | doneu | donin |
| Imperfect | donés | donessis | donés | donéssim | donéssiu | donessin |
| Present perfect | hagi donat | hagis donat | hagi donat | hàgim donat | hàgiu donat | hagin donat |
| Pluperfect | hagués donat | haguessis donat | hagués donat | haguéssim donat | haguéssiu donat | haguessin donat |
The present subjunctive is doni, not dongui; the imperfect is donés, not dongués. The mistaken velar forms are tempting because several frequent second-conjugation verbs have -g-, but donar belongs to the regular -ar pattern. As a first-conjugation verb, it also never takes the third-conjugation incoative extension -eix-; doneixo is impossible.
Convé que li donis una còpia signada abans de marxar.
You should give her a signed copy before leaving.
Si ens haguessin donat més marge, hauríem comparat tres pressupostos.
If they had given us more leeway, we would have compared three estimates.
Three additional periphrastic rows complete the reference. The subjunctive rows have restricted (regional/formal) distribution; general conversation uses donés and hagués donat.
| Periphrastic tense | jo | tu | ell / ella / vostè | nosaltres | vosaltres | ells / elles / vostès |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Indicative past anterior | vaig haver donat | vas haver donat | va haver donat | vam haver donat | vau haver donat | van haver donat |
| Subjunctive past | vagi donar | vagis donar | vagi donar | vàgim donar | vàgiu donar | vagin donar |
| Subjunctive past anterior | vagi haver donat | vagis haver donat | vagi haver donat | vàgim haver donat | vàgiu haver donat | vagin haver donat |
Imperative and the two objects
| Addressee | Affirmative | Negative |
|---|---|---|
| tu | dona | no donis |
| vostè | doni | no doni |
| nosaltres | donem | no donem |
| vosaltres | doneu | no doneu |
| vostès | donin | no donin |
A literal transfer normally has a direct object—the thing—and an indirect object—the recipient: Dono les claus a la Mireia. The direct object becomes les; the recipient becomes li: Les dono a la Mireia; li dono les claus. With first- or second-person recipients, two pronouns combine transparently: Te les dono. For third-person combinations, regional standard patterns differ, so learn the pronoun system rather than translating English word order one word at a time.
Affirmative commands attach pronouns: dona'm el rebut; dona-l'hi; doneu-nos-en dos. Negative commands place the whole cluster before the verb: no me'l donis. This placement contrast belongs to the imperative, not to the lexical meaning of donar.
—Em deixes el carregador? —Sí, te'l dono quan acabi aquesta trucada.
—Can I borrow the charger? —Yes, I'll give it to you when I finish this call.
Dona-li menjar abans de les vuit i deixa-li aigua fresca.
Feed it before eight and leave it some fresh water.
No me'n donis més, que encara no m'he acabat aquesta ració.
Don't give me any more; I still haven't finished this serving.
Meanings, collocations, and pronominal uses
Beyond transfer, donar expresses provision (donar informació), social acts (donar les gràcies, donar l'enhorabona), support (donar suport a), permission (donar permís per), and orientation (la finestra dona al pati). It also appears in donar per + participle: donar per fet, per acabat, per perdut. The complement describes the status the subject assigns to something.
La finestra del menjador dona a una plaça petita amb moreres.
The dining-room window faces a small square with mulberry trees.
No donis per tancat l'acord fins que totes dues parts l'hagin signat.
Don't consider the agreement closed until both parties have signed it.
English “give” is not a safe collocation generator. Catalan commonly says fer un petó, fer una abraçada, fer por, and fer la impressió, while it says donar suport, donar les gràcies, and donar una resposta. The dedicated donar versus fer page gives the broader map.
Transfer donar is not pronominal. Donar-se has separate lexical uses: an event “occurs” (es dona sovint), someone gives themselves over to an activity, or someone yields in donar-se per vençut. In La Júlia es dona per satisfeta, es cannot be removed without changing the construction.
Aquest error es dona sobretot quan les dades s'importen dues vegades.
This error occurs mainly when the data is imported twice.
(Regional: Valencian) regular first-person present done and present-subjunctive forms in -e are standard within the Valencian system. (Regional: Balearic) a zero-ending first person such as don occurs. These systematic regional forms should not be confused with nonstandard velar donc/dongui.
Common Mistakes
❌ Espero que em donguis una resposta abans de divendres.
Incorrect in the general standard—donar does not take a velar g in the subjunctive.
✅ Espero que em donis una resposta abans de divendres.
I hope you give me an answer before Friday.
❌ La meva tieta dóna classes de ceràmica al centre cívic.
Outdated spelling—the current form dona has no diacritical accent.
✅ La meva tieta dona classes de ceràmica al centre cívic.
My aunt teaches pottery classes at the community center.
❌ Dona de menjar al gat abans de sortir.
Incorrect in the neutral construction—donar menjar is built without de.
✅ Dona menjar al gat abans de sortir.
Feed the cat before leaving.
❌ Dona'm-lo no si encara el necessites.
Incorrect—negative commands put no and the pronoun cluster before the verb.
✅ No me'l donis si encara el necessites.
Don't give it to me if you still need it.
❌ Aquest soroll em dona por quan camino sol.
Incorrect—the standard collocation is fer por.
✅ Aquest soroll em fa por quan camino sol.
This noise scares me when I'm walking alone.
Key Takeaways
The conjugation is regular: dono, doni, donés, donat. The real work lies in mapping the thing given and its recipient, ordering their pronouns, and learning noun–verb collocations. Keep donar distinct from lexical donar-se, and do not introduce a velar consonant into the standard paradigm.
