Annotated Personal Letter

A personal letter does more than report events. Its greeting establishes a relationship, its past tenses organize shared history, and its requests protect the recipient's freedom to say no. The original letter below is written in contemporary standard Catalan between two close friends; it is informal but fully spelled out rather than text-message style.

Complete original letter

1. Estimada Júlia,
2. Fa dies que et volia escriure, però entre la feina i la mudança no he trobat ni un moment.
3. Dissabte passat vam acabar de buidar el pis vell i, quan ja marxàvem, vaig trobar una capsa de fotografies que em pensava que havia perdut.
4. Al principi crèiem que en tindríem prou amb dues furgonetes; al final en vam necessitar tres.
5. Aquest matí ja he obert la capsa, n'he mirat unes quantes i m'ha fet molta il·lusió veure'ns de petites a la platja.
6. Quan puguis, em podries enviar la recepta del pastís de llimona de la teva mare? Voldria preparar-lo diumenge.
7. Si et va bé, vine a sopar dissabte vinent i t'ensenyo el pis nou.
8. Una abraçada,
Laia

Idiomatic English translation

Dear Júlia,
I've been meaning to write to you for days, but between work and the move I haven't found a single moment.
Last Saturday we finished emptying the old flat and, just as we were leaving, I found a box of photographs that I thought I had lost.
At first we thought two vans would be enough; in the end we needed three.
This morning I've already opened the box and looked at a few of the photos, and seeing us as little girls at the beach made me really happy.
When you get a chance, could you send me your mother's lemon-cake recipe? I'd like to make it on Sunday.
If that works for you, come to dinner next Saturday and I'll show you the new flat.
Love,
Laia

The translation changes Una abraçada (“a hug”) to “Love,” a natural English closing between friends. It also renders em volia escriure as “I've been meaning to write,” because a literal “I wanted to write to you” would miss the ongoing, delayed intention.

Read-aloud version

Use a warm conversational pace. The slashes mark useful breath groups, not punctuation to add in writing:

Numbered annotation

1. Estimada Júlia: relationship first

Estimada Júlia is affectionate and conventional in a personal letter. (Informal) Hola, Júlia, would be lighter; (formal) Benvolguda senyora Puig, would create professional distance. The feminine adjective agrees with Júlia. Catalan normally uses a comma after a greeting in personal correspondence.

Hola, Pau, fa massa temps que no ens veiem.

Hi Pau, it's been far too long since we've seen each other.

2. An imperfect intention inside a present time frame

Fa dies que measures a situation from its starting point up to now. Et volia escriure uses the imperfect not because the wish is over, but because it presents the intention as background that has been active during those days. English naturally chooses a perfect progressive-like expression: “I've been meaning to write to you.” The weak pronoun et marks the recipient: write to you.

No he trobat is the present perfect. The failed search for time belongs to a period that still reaches the moment of writing. Ni un moment intensifies the negation.

Fa setmanes que us volia convidar, però no he pogut trobar una data.

I've been meaning to invite you for weeks, but I haven't been able to find a date.

💡
The English present perfect does not map mechanically to one Catalan tense. Here Catalan uses both volia for a backgrounded intention and he trobat for a result relevant now.

3. Completed events against an unfolding background

Dissabte passat closes the time period, so the main completed events use the periphrastic past: vam acabar and vaig trobar. By contrast, quan ja marxàvem uses the imperfect because the leaving was in progress when the discovery interrupted it.

Quan tancàvem la porta, vaig sentir el telèfon dins del pis.

As we were closing the door, I heard the phone inside the flat.

The relative clause que em pensava que havia perdut looks backward twice. Em pensava is a past mental state; havia perdut is pluperfect because the supposed loss predates the moment of finding. The subject of havia perdut is omitted because the first-person reference is recoverable.

Vaig recuperar el llibre que em pensava que havia deixat al tren.

I recovered the book that I thought I had left on the train.

4. En keeps the two-sentence comparison cohesive

The two instances of en do related but not identical work. In en tindríem prou amb dues furgonetes, en belongs to the quantitative construction tenir-ne prou (“to have enough”), while amb dues furgonetes states what would supposedly suffice. The conditional tindríem expresses the earlier expectation, not politeness. In en vam necessitar tres, en specifically stands for “vans,” allowing the numeral to remain without repeating the noun.

Pensàvem que amb quatre cadires en tindríem prou, però en vam demanar dues més.

We thought four chairs would be enough, but we ordered two more.

English often repeats a noun or uses “ones.” Catalan's partitive en is what links the quantity to its already-mentioned set. See partitive en.

5. Present perfect, emotional evaluation, and veure'ns

Aquest matí is still presented as part of the writer's current day, so he obert, n'he mirat, and m'ha fet use the present perfect. Repeating la capsa reactivates the earlier scene; n' then replaces de les fotografies, and unes quantes supplies the quantity. In veure'ns, the direct-object pronoun ens attaches to the infinitive after an apostrophe: “to see us.”

Avui n'he llegit tres i m'ha agradat especialment l'últim.

Today I've read three of them, and I especially liked the last one.

De petites is a depictive phrase meaning “when we were little girls.” Its feminine plural form agrees with Laia and Júlia. English packages the same meaning as a time clause.

6. A request made less imposing

Quan puguis (“when you can”) uses the present subjunctive because the available moment is future and not yet identified. Em podries enviar…? is a conditional question that presents the request as negotiable. Voldria is another conventional conditional softener; preparar-lo attaches the masculine direct-object pronoun to the infinitive, referring to el pastís.

Quan tinguis un moment, em podries passar l'adreça?

When you have a moment, could you send me the address?

This is friendly rather than stiff. A bare Envia'm la recepta is grammatically correct, but it sounds more directive unless the context already makes the favor routine.

7–8. Invitation and closing

Si et va bé literally asks whether the plan “goes well for you”; idiomatically it means “if that works for you.” The affirmative imperative vine invites rather than orders because the condition leaves room to decline. T'ensenyo is present indicative with near-future force: the showing will happen during the proposed visit.

Si us va bé, veniu diumenge i us ensenyo el jardí.

If that works for you, come on Sunday and I'll show you the garden.

Una abraçada is an (informal) closing suitable for friends, relatives, and friendly colleagues. Petons is more intimate; Cordialment is (formal/professional) and would clash with this letter's warm voice.

Register and regional notes

The letter uses shared standard forms and a Central Catalan conversational baseline. Pis is standard throughout the language, though local preferences in housing vocabulary can vary. The periphrastic past (vam acabar, vaig trobar) is widely used in contemporary Catalan, including Valencian and Balearic speech. The simple past has a greater presence in some Valencian and formal or literary contexts, but it should not be inserted simply to make a letter “more Valencian.”

Present-perfect versus periphrastic-past choices also depend on how speakers frame the time period. This letter contrasts an open aquest matí with the closed dissabte passat; regional and individual patterns may shift the boundary, but the contrast here is fully standard and coherent.

Common Mistakes

❌ Estimat Júlia, fa dies que volia escriure tu.

Incorrect: the greeting must agree in gender, and escriure takes the indirect recipient pronoun et.

✅ Estimada Júlia, fa dies que et volia escriure.

Dear Júlia, I've been meaning to write to you for days.

⚠️ Dissabte passat hem acabat de buidar el pis.

Possible under some regional or discourse framings, but a poor fit here: dissabte passat is presented as a closed past period.

✅ Dissabte passat vam acabar de buidar el pis.

Last Saturday we finished emptying the flat.

⚠️ Al final vam necessitar tres d'elles.

A marked choice without contrastive emphasis: Catalan normally uses partitive en for a counted previously mentioned noun.

✅ Al final en vam necessitar tres.

In the end we needed three of them.

❌ Quan podràs, pots enviar-me la recepta?

Awkward: an unidentified future time after quan normally takes the present subjunctive.

✅ Quan puguis, em podries enviar la recepta?

When you get a chance, could you send me the recipe?

Comprehension and transformation practice

  1. Why does line 3 use marxàvem but vaig trobar?
  2. What does each occurrence of en/n' replace in lines 4 and 5?
  3. Rewrite Em podries enviar la recepta? as a more direct but still grammatical command.
  4. Change the friendly greeting and closing for a professional acquaintance.
  5. Retell line 5 as a closed event from yesterday.

Suggested answers: (1) the imperfect gives the ongoing background and the periphrastic past marks the completed discovery; (2) the amount needed in tenir-ne prou, then the previously mentioned vans, and finally the photographs; (3) Envia'm la recepta, si us plau; (4) for example, Benvolguda senyora Puig, and Cordialment,; (5) Ahir vaig obrir la capsa, en vaig mirar unes quantes i em va fer molta il·lusió veure'ns de petites.

Key Takeaways

  • Greetings and closings encode the relationship before any event is narrated.
  • The periphrastic past advances completed events; the imperfect supplies intentions, beliefs, and ongoing background.
  • The present perfect connects today's discoveries and emotions to the moment of writing.
  • Weak pronouns such as et, em, en, ens, and lo keep reference economical across sentences.
  • Conditional questions plus quan
    • subjunctive make a favor tactful without becoming unnaturally formal.
💡
When writing your own letter, choose each tense from the writer's present viewpoint: closed episode, unfolding background, earlier past, or result that still matters now.
