A request tries to move another person to act, so grammar and social relations meet directly. Catalan can use an imperative (tanca la porta), a question about ability (em pots ajudar?), a conditional (em podria ajudar?), or a statement of desire (voldria una habitació). None is inherently polite or rude: the size of the favor, the speaker's right to ask, tone, timing, and room for refusal all shape the force.
English learners often translate “Can I have...?” or add “please” to a bare command. Natural Catalan instead chooses a request frame suited to the situation and keeps person agreement consistent. For imperative formation itself, see polite imperatives; this page concentrates on what the alternatives do in interaction.
The request ladder
| Pattern | Example frame | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| imperative | Passa'm... | routine action, close relationship, justified urgency |
| em pots...? | Em pots enviar...? | ordinary request to someone addressed as tu |
| em podries...? | Em podries enviar...? | softer request to tu; favor or greater imposition |
| em pot...? | Em pot indicar...? | ordinary request with vostè |
| em podria...? | Em podria indicar...? | careful or formal request with vostè |
| voldria... | Voldria reservar... | states the desired service; neutral in service encounters |
Passa'm el pa, sisplau.
Pass me the bread, please. (informal, routine request)
Em pots recollir a l'estació quan surtis de la feina?
Can you pick me up at the station when you leave work? (informal)
Em podria confirmar si l'esmorzar està inclòs?
Could you confirm whether breakfast is included? (formal, vostè)
Imperatives: direct does not always mean rude
An imperative is natural when the action is small, expected, or urgent. Family members say agafa'n un altre at the table; colleagues may say mira aquest correu when jointly solving a problem. The imperative becomes harsher when the burden is large, the speaker lacks authority, or the tone leaves no space to respond.
Mira aquest gràfic: les vendes pugen just després de la campanya.
Look at this chart: sales rise just after the campaign. (neutral between colleagues)
Truca al 112 i no moguis l'home fins que arribi l'ambulància!
Call 112 and don't move the man until the ambulance arrives! (urgent)
Adding si us plau acknowledges courtesy but does not erase an order. Compare the same workplace request:
Acaba l'informe abans de les cinc, si us plau.
Finish the report before five, please. (direct; appropriate from a supervisor or for an agreed task)
Quan tinguis un moment, em podries enviar l'informe abans de les cinc?
When you have a moment, could you send me the report before five? (softened; allows negotiation)
The second request combines delayed timing, a conditional, and question intonation. Those devices matter more than mechanically adding si us plau.
Em pots, em podries, em pot, em podria
The object pronoun em means “to/for me.” The verb chooses the addressee relationship:
| Addressee | Present ability | Conditional ability |
|---|---|---|
| tu | em pots ajudar? | em podries ajudar? |
| vostè | em pot ajudar? | em podria ajudar? |
| vosaltres | em podeu ajudar? | em podríeu ajudar? |
Pau, em podries cobrir el torn de dissabte? Et tornaria el favor la setmana que ve.
Pau, could you cover my Saturday shift? I'd return the favor next week.
Because covering a shift is a real burden, the speaker offers reciprocity. Mitigation is not only verb morphology: a reason, a limited time frame, or an easy way to refuse can show respect.
Si no et va bé, no passa res, però em podries deixar el cotxe demà al matí?
If it doesn't suit you, no worries, but could you lend me the car tomorrow morning?
Do not pile up every softener. Potser, si no és molèstia, quan pugui, em podria potser... delays the action so long that the listener must decode what is wanted. One or two devices plus a clear action is usually more considerate.
Voldria in service encounters
Voldria (“I would like”) conventionally states a request without grammatically ordering the employee. It is useful for bookings, purchases, and appointments. In everyday Central Catalan service interactions, a concise noun phrase plus si us plau can also be perfectly courteous.
Voldria reservar una taula per a sis dissabte al vespre.
I'd like to book a table for six on Saturday evening.
Posi'm dos-cents grams de formatge tendre, si us plau.
Give me two hundred grams of mild cheese, please. (formal address, ordinary market request)
Un tallat i un croissant, si us plau.
An espresso with a dash of milk and a croissant, please. (concise service request)
The last turn is not “missing” a verb. In the shared café script, the desired transaction is obvious. By contrast, vull un cafè is grammatically correct but centers the customer's will and may sound childlike or abrupt without supportive context.
English “Can I have a coffee?” should not be translated as a question about possession such as Puc tenir un cafè? The idiomatic options are voldria, posi'm, or the concise item name.
Position, prosody, and scope
An initial attention marker frames the whole request: Perdoni, em podria...? A final si us plau usually scopes over the requested action. Parenthetical si us plau can sound careful in formal interaction. Rising intonation marks a genuine question; a sharp falling contour can turn even em pots...? into a demand.
Perdoni, em podria obrir aquesta vitrina, si us plau?
Excuse me, could you open this display case for me, please? (formal)
In writing, punctuation helps readers recover this structure: use a question mark for interrogative requests and commas around a parenthetical courtesy formula. In speech, pause after perdoni long enough for contact, especially when the employee is attending to someone else.
Formal and informal exchanges
—Em deixes el carregador cinc minuts? —Sí, però torna-me'l abans de la reunió. —Fet, gràcies.
—Will you lend me the charger for five minutes? —Yes, but give it back before the meeting. —Deal, thanks. (informal)
—Bon dia. Voldria canviar l'adreça d'enviament. —Em pot ensenyar el comprovant de compra? —Sí, aquí el té.
—Good morning. I'd like to change the delivery address. —Can you show me the proof of purchase? —Yes, here it is. (formal service exchange)
The formal exchange maintains third-person forms: pot and té. A title is unnecessary because the service roles already make the relationship clear.
Refusal and repair
A request must permit an answer. Ordinary refusals often begin with regret or a reason: em sap greu, però...; avui no puc. The requester can repair an overlarge request by narrowing it rather than repeating “please.”
—Em podries revisar tot el dossier avui? —Avui no arribo a tot. —D'acord; perdona, m'he passat. Mira només la primera pàgina quan puguis.
—Could you review the whole file today? —I can't get to everything today. —All right; sorry, I asked too much. Just look at the first page when you can.
This repair accepts the obstacle, takes responsibility, and reduces the burden. It is more effective than insisting només serà un moment when the task plainly takes longer.
Regional context
Si us plau is the cross-regional standard courtesy marker used on this page. (regional: Valencian) per favor is also an ordinary standard choice, and formal service requests commonly use voldria, podria and disculpe. Balearic, Northwestern, Northern, and Alguerese speakers may differ in pronoun forms, preferred address, and conventional directness. These are community patterns, not defects or automatic rules about every individual.
Common Mistakes
❌ Puc haver un cafè?
Incorrect word-for-word transfer of English 'Can I have a coffee?'; haver cannot be used this way.
✅ Voldria un cafè amb llet, si us plau.
I'd like a coffee with milk, please.
❌ Perdoni, em pots imprimir això?
Incorrect — perdoni is vostè, but pots is tu.
✅ Perdoni, em pot imprimir aquest document?
Excuse me, can you print this document for me? (consistent vostè)
⚠️ Dona'm demà les claus, si us plau, gràcies.
Contextually abrupt — please and thanks do not make a contextless demand courteous.
✅ Em podries tornar les claus demà al matí, si et va bé?
Could you return the keys tomorrow morning, if that works for you?
❌ Voldria que obres la finestra.
Incorrect — this expression of desire does not take an indicative form after que.
✅ Voldria que obrissis la finestra, si no et fa res.
I'd like you to open the window, if you don't mind.
Correction practice
Adjust these requests to the stated relationship: (1) to a close friend, Em podria passar la sal?; (2) to an employee addressed as vostè, Em pots confirmar el preu?; (3) to ask a large favor, Porta'm a l'aeroport. Natural repairs are Em pots passar la sal?, Em pot confirmar el preu?, and Em podries portar a l'aeroport, si et va bé? The last can be softened further by specifying the time and acknowledging that refusal is possible.
Key Takeaways
- Use imperatives for routine, cooperative, or urgent actions; use questions and conditionals when compliance is less presupposed.
- Match pots/podries with tu and pot/podria with vostè.
- Voldria is a natural service-encounter frame; a concise item plus si us plau can also be polite.
- Soften through timing, reasons, burden limits, and room to refuse—not through an uncontrolled pile of formulas.
- If a request was excessive, repair it by acknowledging that and reducing the task.
