Polite and Indirect Questions

Politeness in Catalan is not created by one equivalent of English please. Speakers combine grammatical distance, an appropriate form of address, a reason or acknowledgment of inconvenience, and a respectful tone. A direct On és el lavabo? is perfectly courteous in many situations; Em podria dir on és el lavabo, si us plau? gives the listener more room and suits service encounters or requests to strangers. The conditional and imperfect present the request as less abrupt, while an embedded clause packages the desired information without English-style inversion.

The clause after dir, saber, or preguntar follows the structure of an embedded question; the forms of tu, vostè, and vós are treated systematically under forms of address.

Direct does not automatically mean rude

A clear information question with a greeting is often the most natural choice. Politeness depends on setting, relationship, voice, and whether the request imposes on the listener.

Bon dia, a quina planta és radiologia?

Good morning, what floor is radiology on?

Perdona, aquest autobús para davant de l'hospital?

Excuse me, does this bus stop in front of the hospital?

Perdona addresses one person as tu; perdoni addresses one person as vostè. In a busy café among peers, Perdona, tens una cadira lliure? is natural (informal). In an institutional encounter, Perdoni, em podria ajudar? maintains formal singular address. Overloading a simple exchange with several elaborate softeners can sound distant or bureaucratic rather than kinder.

Compare this minimal pair:

On és l'oficina d'informació?

Where is the information office?

Em podria dir on és l'oficina d'informació?

Could you tell me where the information office is?

The factual content is identical. The second question explicitly turns the hearer’s ability to tell into the negotiable request, so it acknowledges a small social imposition.

💡
Match the amount of softening to the burden. A greeting plus a direct question may be warmer than a formula that is grammatically elaborate but delivered without human contact.

The conditional creates respectful distance

The conditional forms podria, voldria, faria move the request away from an immediate command. They are conventional, productive softeners in neutral and formal service language.

Em podria indicar on he de recollir l'acreditació?

Could you show me where I need to collect my badge?

Voldria saber si la tarifa inclou l'esmorzar.

I would like to know whether the rate includes breakfast.

Li faria res abaixar una mica la música?

Would you mind turning the music down a little?

In em podria dir, em is the recipient “to me”; in li faria res, li points politely to the person addressed as vostè. With tu, the corresponding form is Et faria res...? This construction asks literally whether doing the action would bother the listener and therefore normally takes an infinitive.

The conditional softens; it does not automatically make a sentence socially appropriate. Em podria donar la seva contrasenya? remains an intrusive request. Conversely, a familiar household request may sound unnecessarily distant with voldria.

FrameTypical settingWhat follows
Em podria dir...?neutral/formal information requestembedded si or interrogative clause
Voldria saber...careful service speech or writingembedded question
Li faria res...?request that imposes on vostèinfinitive
Podria...?polite request for an actioninfinitive or object

The imperfect softens by presenting a prior intention

The imperfect in volia, venia a, or em preguntava can frame the request as an intention already in progress rather than a demand created on the spot. This use is common in speech and correspondence; it need not refer to an abandoned past wish.

Volia preguntar-li si encara accepten inscripcions.

I wanted to ask you whether you are still accepting registrations.

Venia a demanar si em podríeu canviar l'hora de la visita.

I was coming to ask whether you could change my appointment time.

Em preguntava si tindrien una habitació més tranquil·la.

I was wondering whether you might have a quieter room.

The tense layers matter. Em preguntava supplies the imperfect softener; tindrien adds conditional distance to the availability question. Stacking both is appropriate for a delicate request but too much for every routine transaction.

Compare:

Vull saber quan m'ho pagareu.

I want to know when you will pay me.

Volia saber quan estava previst fer el pagament.

I wanted to know when the payment was scheduled. (formal/administrative)

The first is direct and may be justified after a delay. The second depersonalizes the event and is more (formal), but it can also obscure responsibility. Politeness and communicative effectiveness are not always the same thing.

Embed the information gap after the polite frame

After em podria dir, sap, voldria saber, or em preguntava, use si for a yes–no issue and an interrogative phrase for open information. Punctuation follows the matrix clause.

Sap si la farmàcia de guàrdia és gaire lluny?

Do you know whether the on-duty pharmacy is very far away?

Em podríeu confirmar quins documents he de presentar?

Could you confirm which documents I have to submit?

Ens agradaria saber amb qui hem de parlar per modificar la reserva.

We would like to know who we need to speak to in order to change the booking.

Do not strand amb at the end, and do not insert English inversion: amb qui hem de parlar, not qui hem de parlar amb. Similarly, Em pot dir on és la sala? preserves normal Catalan placement in the embedded clause. Unlike English, Catalan does not change the order of On és la sala? to an equivalent of where the room is after the polite frame.

Que without an accent introduces a finite complement after verbs such as demanar: Li demano que m'ho enviï. That is a request that an action be performed and normally takes the subjunctive. It is not the same as an embedded question.

Li demano que m'enviï el rebut per correu electrònic.

I ask you to send me the receipt by email. (formal)

Li pregunto si em pot enviar el rebut per correu electrònic.

I ask whether you can send me the receipt by email.

The first presents the desired action in a que-clause; the second asks about ability or willingness with interrogative si. English ask covers both meanings. Catalan uses demanar que + subjunctive for a requested action, while preguntar si unambiguously asks for information. Demanar si is also standard when demanar means “ask/inquire,” as in Venia a demanar si... above.

Clause-initial que can frame a spoken request

In conversation, unstressed que may introduce a yes–no question or reminder: Que em podries ajudar un moment? It signals continuity with the situation and can soften the opening, but it is not inherently formal. It is common in everyday speech (informal/neutral) and should not replace a complete service formula in every context.

Que em podries guardar la bossa un moment, si us plau?

Could you keep an eye on my bag for a moment, please?

Que sap si avui fan visites guiades?

Do you happen to know whether there are guided tours today?

In the second sentence, matrix que frames the interaction, while embedded si introduces the unknown yes–no content. Neither word maps one-to-one onto a single English function word.

Address forms, clitics, and si us plau

Catalan distinguishes familiar tu, formal singular vostè, familiar plural vosaltres, and formal plural vostès. Vós is a respectful singular form found in administrative, professional, and some regional or traditional usage (formal). Verb agreement and clitics must remain coherent.

AddressVerb and clitic modelRegister
tuEm pots dir...? / Et faria res...?informal or familiar
vostèEm pot dir...? / Li faria res...?formal singular
vosaltresEm podeu dir...? / Us faria res...?familiar plural
vostèsEm poden dir...? / Els faria res...?formal plural
vósEm podeu dir...? / Us faria res...?formal; context-dependent

Senyora Puig, em pot confirmar si ha rebut la notificació?

Ms Puig, can you confirm whether you have received the notice?

Si us plau, ens podríeu deixar passar primer? Portem una criatura petita.

Could you let us go through first, please? We have a small child with us.

Si us plau is historically built with us, but it functions as a fixed polite expression and can accompany different address forms. The reduced spelling sisplau is common in less-formal contemporary writing, but current normative spelling keeps the three words separate: si us plau. Valencian commonly also uses per favor in standard and everyday speech (regional: Valencian), alongside si us plau. Formula choice does not replace coherent verb agreement.

A natural service dialogue

—Bon vespre. Em podria dir si encara serveixen sopars? —Sí, la cuina tanca d'aquí a vint minuts.

—Good evening. Could you tell me whether you are still serving dinner? —Yes, the kitchen closes in twenty minutes.

—I ens podríem asseure al fons, si us plau? —I tant; ara els preparo la taula.

—And could we sit at the back, please? —Of course; I'll prepare your table now.

The customer uses the conditional and si us plau without making the exchange ceremonious. The staff member’s els addresses the group formally. Actual restaurants vary: many use vosaltres with customers, while more formal establishments maintain vostè/vostès. Choose a pattern appropriate to the setting and keep it consistent.

A reordered constituent can foreground the topic without weakening politeness:

Sobre la devolució, em podria aclarir quan rebré l'ingrés?

Regarding the refund, could you clarify when I will receive the payment?

The opening phrase establishes the administrative topic; quan rebré l'ingrés remains an embedded question. No comma belongs between aclarir and its complement.

Common Mistakes

Using direct-question order inside the embedded question:

❌ Em podria dir on l'estació és?

Incorrect — this copies English embedded-question order into Catalan.

✅ Em podria dir on és l'estació d'autobusos?

Could you tell me where the bus station is?

The apparent sameness with the direct On és l'estació? comes from Catalan syntax; do not rearrange it to imitate English.

Confusing preguntar si with demanar que:

❌ Li pregunto que m'enviï una còpia.

Incorrect for a request to send — preguntar asks a question.

✅ Li demano que m'enviï una còpia signada.

I ask you to send me a signed copy.

Mixing formal address with a familiar clitic:

❌ Senyor Roca, et faria res esperar aquí?

Inconsistent — senyor plus vostè normally requires li, not familiar et.

✅ Senyor Roca, li faria res esperar aquí un moment?

Mr Roca, would you mind waiting here for a moment?

Using a subjunctive after interrogative si merely because the answer is uncertain:

❌ Voldria saber si tinguin taula per a quatre.

Incorrect — the embedded availability question normally uses the indicative.

✅ Voldria saber si tenen taula per a quatre aquesta nit.

I would like to know whether you have a table for four tonight.

Stranding the preposition under English influence:

❌ Em pot dir qui he de parlar amb?

Incorrect — amb belongs before qui.

✅ Em pot dir amb qui he de parlar per renovar el permís?

Can you tell me who I need to speak to in order to renew the permit?

Correction task

Adapt these to a formal service encounter: Ei, on canvio el bitllet?, Et faria res mirar-ho, senyora?, and Vull saber qui he d'enviar el formulari a. Suitable revisions are Bon dia, em podria dir on puc canviar el bitllet?, Li faria res mirar-ho, senyora?, and Voldria saber a qui he d'enviar el formulari. The changes coordinate register, clitics, and preposition placement; adding si us plau is optional, not a substitute for those structural choices.

Key Takeaways

  • Match the amount of softening to the burden: a greeting plus a direct question can be fully courteous for a simple request.
  • Use conditional frames such as em podria dir and imperfect frames such as volia preguntar to create respectful distance when the context calls for it.
  • Distinguish preguntar si for an unknown answer from demanar que + subjunctive for a requested action.
  • Keep tu, vostè, vosaltres, vostès, or vós consistent across verb forms and clitics; si us plau does not repair mismatched address.
💡
Polite Catalan keeps the request structurally clear: soften the matrix frame, preserve the embedded question’s connector and prepositions, and maintain one coherent form of address.
