Catalan allows concise requests, lively overlap, carefully delayed disagreement, and meaningful silence. None of those behaviors has a fixed interpretation. Passa'm això can be cooperative among friends and imperious at a service counter; a two-second pause can show reflection, reluctance, lack of comprehension, or simply an ordinary turn boundary.
Advanced competence therefore means reading clusters of cues: who has the right to make the request, how large the imposition is, what happened in the previous turn, where the pause falls, and whether pitch opens or closes the exchange. Directness is not the opposite of politeness, and silence is not an empty absence.
Direct wording and social force
These two versions ask for the same action:
Tanca la finestra, que entra molt soroll.
Close the window; a lot of noise is coming in. (direct, natural among peers sharing the room)
Quan puguis, et faria res tancar la finestra? Entra molt soroll.
When you can, would you mind closing the window? A lot of noise is coming in. (softened)
The imperative makes the action highly accessible and presents compliance as expected. The second version delays urgency with quan puguis and asks about the burden through et faria res. Neither is automatically better. In a recording studio where noise is ruining a take, the direct form may be more considerate because it minimizes delay.
| Form | What it foregrounds | Common setting |
|---|---|---|
| Tanca-ho. | the required action | urgent or routine cooperative task |
| Ho pots tancar? | the addressee's ability | ordinary informal request |
| Ho podries tancar? | distance from the demand | larger favor or careful tone |
| Et faria res tancar-ho? | possible inconvenience | considerate informal request |
| Li faria res tancar-ho? | inconvenience plus formal address | respectful request to vostè |
Em pots...? and et faria res...? are near-synonyms as requests, not literal equivalents. The first conventionally asks for action; the second asks whether the action would bother the listener. Consequently, No, cap problema accepts an et faria res...? request, while sí can be interpreted as “yes, it would bother me.”
For a broader ladder of imperative, present, and conditional frames, see making requests.
Intonation changes the invitation to respond
Question syntax does not guarantee question force. A broad rise on Ho pots mirar? presents a real request and leaves the floor open. A low, compressed contour can make it sound like an order whose interrogative form is only cosmetic. Conversely, a gentle fall on an imperative can sound calmer than a sharp rise that conveys impatience.
Ho pots mirar un moment, si us plau?
Can you look at it for a moment, please? (rising request contour; response invited)
Sentence-final particles also interact with pitch. Eh? may seek confirmation, recruit agreement, or warn; oi? normally asks for confirmation of an expectation. They do not mechanically make a statement friendlier.
Demà m'envies la versió definitiva, oi?
You'll send me the final version tomorrow, right? (confirmation expected; can still exert pressure)
In writing, punctuation only approximates these distinctions. A question mark identifies an interrogative format, but readers still infer pressure from role, deadline, and wording.
Silence belongs to a sequence
A pause after an invitation often projects an answer. A pause after criticism may display resistance. Silence after a greeting can indicate that it was not heard. Measure silence by what the previous turn made relevant, not by an abstract idea that “Catalans tolerate” or “dislike” pauses.
—Vindràs a sopar dissabte? —[pausa] Encara no ho sé; t'ho confirmo demà?
—Will you come to dinner on Saturday? —[pause] I don't know yet; can I confirm tomorrow? (delay projects uncertainty)
The pause warns that an immediate enthusiastic sí is not coming. Encara no ho sé then names uncertainty, while the proposed deadline repairs the practical problem. If the pause were followed by Sí, i tant!, it could instead mark surprise or mental planning.
—Què et sembla la proposta? —Mmm... la primera part la veig clara; la segona l'hauríem de revisar.
—What do you think of the proposal? —Hmm... the first part seems clear to me; we should revise the second. (thinking pause before qualified disagreement)
Here mmm holds the turn while the speaker formulates an answer. An unfilled pause may let another person enter. Catalan has no unique number of seconds at which one becomes “thoughtful” and the other “awkward”; pace varies with speaker, genre, neurotype, medium, and relationship.
Overlap, interruption, and delayed entry
Overlap can show enthusiastic affiliation when the second speaker predicts an ending and agrees. It can also block a speaker repeatedly. Listen for whether the first speaker completes the turn, regains it, or withdraws.
—Quan vam arribar a la plaça... —Ja havia començat el concert! —Exacte, i no trobàvem els altres.
—When we got to the square... —The concert had already started! —Exactly, and we couldn't find the others. (affiliative overlap)
By contrast, repeated entry before a speaker reaches the point may require repair:
—No, espera, deixa'm acabar això i després t'escolto. —Tens raó, perdona; acaba.
—No, wait, let me finish this and then I'll listen to you. —You're right, sorry; finish. (repair after interruption)
Deixa'm acabar is direct because turn access must be corrected immediately. The second speaker acknowledges the problem without defending the intention. A very indirect hint might fail to stop the interruption.
Informal and formal exchanges
An informal household exchange can be compact:
—Baixa una mica la música, sisplau. —Ara mateix; no m'havia adonat que era tan tard.
—Turn the music down a bit, please. —Right away; I hadn't realized it was so late. (informal)
The diminutive quantity una mica limits the requested change. Sisplau is an informal written representation of a frequent spoken form; si us plau is appropriate across registers.
In a formal meeting, disagreement often separates evaluation from person:
—Considera viable aquest calendari? —Tal com està plantejat, no el podem assumir. Si li sembla, podem revisar els terminis.
—Do you consider this schedule feasible? —As currently proposed, we cannot accept it. If you agree, we can review the deadlines. (formal, vostè)
The answer is direct about feasibility but softens interpersonal impact by criticizing the current design, not the addressee. Si li sembla maintains third-person formal agreement and offers a joint next step.
English formulas and over-softening
English speakers may reproduce long negative-politeness formulas: “I was wondering if perhaps you might possibly...” Catalan can use the imperfect volia demanar-te..., the conditional, and prefaces such as quan tinguis un moment, but stacking them all can sound evasive or make the request hard to locate.
Volia preguntar-te si podries cobrir-me el torn de divendres.
I wanted to ask whether you could cover my Friday shift. (careful but clear)
One preface plus one conditional is enough here. At the other extreme, translating English “Please” as though it licensed any imperative ignores role and burden. Directness must fit the relationship, not a word-count formula.
Regional and individual variation without stereotypes
Central Catalan provides the forms on this page, but conversational timing differs within every community. Valencian, Balearic, Northwestern, Northern, and Alguerese speakers may use different discourse particles, address patterns, and degrees of overlap. Contact with Spanish, French, Italian, Sardinian, or other languages can shape individual repertoires.
These tendencies never predict an individual's intention on their own. Age, family style, professional practice, hearing, processing time, and the current activity may matter more than region. Describe what happened—“the response came after a pause,” “the speakers overlapped”—before assigning a cultural meaning.
Common Mistakes
❌ Senyora Vidal, li faria res esperar mentre acabes el formulari?
Incorrect — li and faria select vostè, while acabes selects tu.
✅ Senyora Vidal, li faria res esperar un moment?
Ms. Vidal, would you mind waiting a moment? (consistent vostè)
❌ Em podries que revisessis aquesta frase?
Incorrect — poder takes an infinitive here, not que plus a subjunctive clause.
✅ Em podries revisar aquesta frase quan tinguis un moment?
Could you revise this sentence when you have a moment?
⚠️ Perdoni moltíssim que el molesti, si no li fa res i si fos tan amable, potser podria obrir la porta?
Overloaded — the stacked formal markers obscure a small request.
✅ Perdoni, em podria obrir la porta, si us plau?
Excuse me, could you open the door for me, please? (formal and clear)
⚠️ No ha contestat de seguida; per tant, els balears no volen parlar directament.
A stereotype and an invalid inference from one pause.
✅ Ha fet una pausa abans de respondre; esperem el torn següent abans d'interpretar-la.
They paused before answering; let's wait for the next turn before interpreting it.
Key Takeaways
- Direct forms can enact cooperation, urgency, or authority; relationship and activity determine which.
- Ho pots...?, ho podries...?, and et faria res...? differ in how strongly they presuppose compliance.
- Intonation can make a question pressuring or an imperative calm.
- Interpret silence by the response made relevant in the preceding turn.
- Overlap is affiliative when it supports completion, but obstructive when it repeatedly removes the floor.
- Regional repertoires matter, yet no regional interactional style applies to every individual.
