C2 is not a hunt for rarer verb forms. It is the ability to judge which form, variant, or degree of explicitness a particular text needs—and to justify that judgment against linguistic evidence. This route trains historical reading, comparison among contemporary standards, specialized registers, textual criticism, and editing. It assumes C1 production and repeatedly returns to ordinary agreement, clitics, and tense: near-native polish still rests on the core system.
Central Catalan remains the default teaching baseline, not a hierarchy of speakers. You must read IEC-oriented and AVL-oriented standards confidently, recognize Balearic, Northwestern, Northern, and Alguerese patterns, and avoid converting every difference into an error. Your own production may follow any coherent codified model appropriate to the commission.
Entry portfolio
Submit three samples: an 800-word analytical essay, a transcript of a five-minute unscripted discussion, and a 300-word edit of somebody else's prose with comments. You are ready if you can:
- maintain reference and register across long texts;
- distinguish an error from a regional, historical, genre-specific, or deliberately marked form;
- read unfamiliar syntax without automatically “correcting” it into modern Central Catalan;
- condense or expand a passage while preserving its evidential force;
- explain a revision in Catalan using precise grammatical language.
L'editor no ha substituït la forma perquè fos incomprensible, sinó perquè la col·lecció exigeix una norma gràfica unificada.
The editor did not replace the form because it was incomprehensible, but because the series requires a unified orthographic standard.
If you can understand that distinction but cannot defend an alternative edit, repeat the C1 path, especially its production projects.
Use four diagnostic questions to choose your starting point: Can you identify what a historical ending does before modernizing it? Can you compare two regional forms without ranking their speakers? Can you preserve legal force while simplifying a sentence? Can you distinguish a correction from a house-style preference and cite evidence for both? A weak answer determines the unit you should begin with. Each unit's checkpoint is a can-do statement in practical form: do not advance until another reader can inspect both your result and your reasoning.
Unit 1: reading grammar historically
Weeks 1–3: study historical syntax, historical dialects, archaic inflected forms, and medieval perfects. Treat older texts as systems, not as damaged modern Catalan. Record the manuscript form, a literal analysis, a modern equivalent, and what the modernization loses.
E dix que no hi consentiria mentre fos viu.
And he said that he would not consent to it while he lived. (archaic/literary narrative opening)
Quan hagué acabat de parlar, els presents guardaren silenci.
When he had finished speaking, those present remained silent. (literary simple past and past anterior)
Read the annotated medieval document. Your checkpoint is a 250-word diplomatic transcription excerpt plus a modernized version. Mark every editorial expansion and uncertain reading. You are not “improving” the author; you are making two different artifacts for two different readers.
Unit 2: dialect comparison without caricature
Weeks 4–6: pair comparative regional analysis with regional vowels, regional articles, regional pronouns, and normative variation. Compare matched recordings and texts rather than lists of “curious” words.
Quan acabi, us telefonaré perquè vingueu.
When I finish, I'll call you so that you come. (Central-oriented standard)
Quan acabe, vos telefonaré perquè vingueu.
When I finish, I'll call you so that you come. (standard Valencian)
Quan acabi, vos telefonaré perquè vengueu.
When I finish, I'll call you so that you come. (Balearic-oriented standard; regional subjunctive vengueu)
The checkpoint is an audio commentary on three versions of the same passage. Identify phonological, morphological, and lexical differences separately. Say which features are codified, which are conversational, and which you still cannot classify. “It sounds rural” is never acceptable evidence.
If sound prevents reliable comparison, add an optional phonological branch: pair regional listening with formal and colloquial pronunciation, and annotate one matched recording for stress, vowel reduction, consonants, and register. Keep observation separate from imitation. A legal or philological editor needs broad receptive control; adopting every pronunciation productively is neither necessary nor coherent.
Unit 3: legal and administrative precision
Weeks 7–9: study legal conditions, modality, restrictive and nonrestrictive relatives, and the annotated institutional text. Legal (formal) prose often repeats nouns where ordinary style would use pronouns because avoiding an ambiguous antecedent matters more than elegance.
Les persones que presentin la sol·licitud fora de termini quedaran excloses del procediment.
Persons who submit the application after the deadline will be excluded from the procedure.
L'autorització es podrà revocar si s'incompleix qualsevol de les condicions que estableix l'article 8.
The authorization may be revoked if any of the conditions established by Article 8 is breached.
Sens perjudici del que disposa l'apartat anterior, l'òrgan competent podrà requerir documentació addicional.
Without prejudice to the preceding paragraph, the competent body may request additional documentation. (formal legal formula)
Checkpoint: rewrite a 500-word administrative notice for the public, then restore a legally robust version. The plain-language version must remain accurate; the legal version must not become obscure merely to sound official. Explain what each repeated noun, modal, and condition protects against.
Unit 4: philology and textual criticism
Weeks 10–12: use comparative versions, literary nonfinite forms, and literary inversion. Learn the basic editorial distinction between what the witness contains and what an editor reconstructs.
El testimoni A llegeix «partiren», mentre que B ofereix «partien»; la primera lectura presenta l'acció com a culminada.
Witness A reads 'they departed,' whereas B gives 'they were departing'; the first reading presents the action as completed. (academic/philological)
Mantinc l'apòstrof de l'edició original, però regularitzo l'accentuació d'acord amb els criteris declarats a la nota editorial.
I retain the apostrophe from the original edition but regularize the accentuation according to the criteria stated in the editorial note.
The checkpoint is a one-page critical edition with apparatus, modern translation, and commentary. Never silently regularize l·l, apostrophes, hyphens, or accents. If the reading is uncertain, mark it; confident invention is worse than a transparent lacuna.
Unit 5: editorial judgment across registers
Weeks 13–15: alternate formal overcorrection, argumentation, reference chains, and syntax variation. Edit the same content as a journal abstract (academic), a museum label (formal), a podcast script (informal), and a literary monologue (literary).
Els resultats suggereixen una correlació, però no permeten establir una relació causal.
The results suggest a correlation but do not permit a causal relationship to be established. (academic)
Les dades van juntes, però això no vol dir que una cosa causi l'altra.
The data move together, but that doesn't mean one thing causes the other. (informal explanatory register)
Checkpoint: provide a tracked edit and a 500-word rationale. Classify interventions as correction, consistency, clarity, register, or optional style. A C2 editor knows that not every sentence they would personally phrase differently needs changing.
Unit 6: synthesis through dialogue and extended text
Weeks 16–18: use the courtly dialogue in Tirant lo Blanc as the required dialogue and comparative versions as the required C2 extended text. In the dialogue, distinguish speaker intention, implied reference, historical politeness, and editorial modernization; do not transplant its courtly formulas into modern speech. In the versions, distinguish authorial variation from editorial intervention and defend how each version represents voice.
Your receptive goal is to follow specialized discussion across varieties, including irony and historical quotation, without losing who endorses each claim. Your productive goal is to mediate: restate a technical or regionally marked contribution for another audience while preserving its stance.
No afirmo que aquesta sigui l'única lectura possible; sostinc que és la que explica més dades amb menys esmenes.
I am not claiming that this is the only possible reading; I maintain that it explains more data with fewer emendations.
Recycling schedule and capstone
At the end of every unit, revisit one C1 text and improve it under a new constraint. After Unit 1, identify historical echoes; after Unit 2, test regional consistency; after Unit 3, eliminate legal ambiguity; after Unit 4, document sources; after Unit 5, adapt it for a new audience. Repeat a cold oral summary at 24 hours, one week, and one month.
The capstone is an editorial dossier: a 1,500-word source text, a revised version, an alternative version for a different audience, a 1,000-word commentary, and a ten-minute defense before critical readers. It must include one historical or regional question and one genuine case where you deliberately retain a marked form. Success means that another editor can reconstruct your reasoning—not that your version looks maximally standardized.
Common Mistakes
Treating archaic language as modern error
⚠️ L'autor escriu «dix»; ho corregeixo silenciosament a «va dir».
Bad editorial method — an archaic form in a historical witness is not a typo.
✅ El text llegeix «dix»; en la versió modernitzada, ho represento per «va dir».
The text reads 'dix'; in the modernized version, I represent it as 'va dir.'
Calling every non-Central form colloquial
⚠️ «Ací» és una forma col·loquial que cal substituir per «aquí».
False claim — ací is a codified standard Valencian form, not merely colloquial.
✅ En aquesta edició valenciana mantenim «ací» d'acord amb el model adoptat.
In this Valencian edition we retain ací in accordance with the adopted model.
Making legal prose elegant at the cost of precision
❌ Si hi ha problemes, ho podrà revocar.
Unsuitable legal edit — the condition and the referent of ho are underspecified.
✅ L'òrgan competent podrà revocar l'autorització si s'incompleixen les condicions de l'article 8.
The competent body may revoke the authorization if the conditions in Article 8 are breached.
Standardizing an author's voice without justification
❌ Canvio totes les dislocacions perquè l'ordre canònic és més correcte.
Incorrect rationale — dislocation can organize topic and voice; canonical order is not automatically more correct.
✅ Mantinc la dislocació perquè recupera el tema anterior i reprodueix deliberadament un ritme oral.
I retain the dislocation because it resumes the preceding topic and deliberately reproduces an oral rhythm.
Key Takeaways
- Read historical, regional, legal, and literary forms in the systems that license them.
- Distinguish correction from optional stylistic intervention and document both.
- Develop wide receptive competence without blending varieties accidentally in production.
- Preserve legal force and textual evidence while adapting prose for real readers.
- Demonstrate C2 mastery through defensible editorial choices, not through ornamental complexity.
