Most Catalan subjunctive errors are not failures to remember an ending. They begin one step earlier: the learner has misdiagnosed what the subordinate clause is doing. The indicative normally presents its content as information; the subjunctive places that content inside a wish, command, reaction, doubt, purpose, open description, or pending event without independently asserting it.
English often hides this contrast, while Spanish can create misleading confidence because its system is similar but not identical. This clinic targets three recurring families: an indicative inside a nonassertive frame, an unnecessary subjunctive after an assertion, and the right mood in the wrong tense. For the full selection system, see Indicative or Subjunctive?.
A repeatable diagnostic workflow
- Underline the subordinate clause introduced by que, a relative word, or a time connector.
- Ask whether the speaker is asserting its content. Knowledge and reports normally take the indicative; wishes, influence, doubt, reaction, and evaluation normally take the subjunctive.
- With a relative clause, ask whether its antecedent is identified. A known referent takes the indicative; a sought, denied, or unspecified one takes the subjunctive.
- With a time clause, distinguish a habit or known event from a still-pending future occasion.
- Only then choose tense: present viewpoint versus past/hypothetical viewpoint, and non-anterior versus already completed event.
- Finally, check whether a contact form has distorted the diagnosis—especially Spanish quizá + subjunctive copied after Catalan potser.
Wishes, influence, and reactions need the subjunctive
A wish does not establish that its object will become true. A command tries to cause an event; it does not report one. An emotional reaction can concern a real fact, but the subordinate clause is backgrounded as the object of that reaction.
Repair 1 — a present wish.
❌ Espero que l'equip arriba abans de les vuit.
Incorrect — the hoped-for arrival is not asserted, so arriba cannot remain indicative.
✅ Espero que l'equip arribi abans de les vuit.
I hope the team arrives before eight.
Repair 2 — influence on another subject.
❌ La directora exigeix que refarem els càlculs avui.
Incorrect — exigir que places the demanded action inside a nonassertive frame.
✅ La directora exigeix que refem els càlculs avui.
The director requires us to redo the calculations today.
Repair 3 — reaction to a fact.
❌ Em sorprèn que encara tens aquella entrada.
Incorrect — the speaker reacts to the fact instead of presenting it as the main assertion.
✅ Em sorprèn que encara tinguis aquella entrada.
I'm surprised you still have that ticket.
This does not mean that tinguis is doubtful. The ticket may visibly be in the listener's hand. “Subjunctive equals unreal” is therefore an unreliable shortcut.
Unknown antecedents and pending events
Relative clauses change mood according to identification. If you have a particular accountant in mind, you can assert what that person knows. If you merely need anyone who meets a condition, no person has yet been identified.
Repair 4 — an open search.
❌ Necessitem una assessora que sap interpretar aquest conveni.
Incorrect for a still-unidentified adviser — sap describes a known person.
✅ Necessitem una assessora que sàpiga interpretar aquest conveni.
We need an adviser who knows how to interpret this agreement.
Repair 5 — a denied antecedent.
❌ No conec cap taller que arregla aquest model tan antic.
Incorrect — no actual workshop is being identified.
✅ No conec cap taller que arregli aquest model tan antic.
I don't know any garage that repairs such an old model.
Future time clauses behave similarly: the event is pending at speech time. English says “when she finishes” with a present form, but Catalan normally marks the future occasion with the subjunctive.
Repair 6 — future, not habitual, time.
❌ Quan acaba la videotrucada, et tornarà a escriure.
Grammatical only as a habitual reading: ‘Whenever she finishes the video call, she writes back.’ It does not fit the intended single future occasion.
✅ Quan acabi la videotrucada, et tornarà a escriure.
When she finishes the video call, she'll write to you again.
This is a meaning-changing contrast: the crossed sentence is not malformed Catalan. Its indicative acaba turns the clause toward a routine or characteristic sequence.
Do not put every uncertain statement in the subjunctive
The subjunctive is licensed by a syntactic and discourse frame, not by a vague feeling of uncertainty. Crec que, sé que, és evident que, and an ordinary report assert their complements. Catalan potser normally combines with an indicative verb, unlike Spanish quizá(s), which readily permits the subjunctive.
Repair 7 — an asserted belief.
❌ Crec que la comanda arribi dimecres.
Incorrect — affirmative crec que presents the arrival as the speaker's belief.
✅ Crec que la comanda arribarà dimecres.
I think the order will arrive on Wednesday.
Repair 8 — a fact introduced as known.
❌ Sabem que aquesta clau obri la porta del terrat.
Incorrect — saber que asserts the complement and selects the indicative.
✅ Sabem que aquesta clau obre la porta del terrat.
We know this key opens the roof-terrace door.
Repair 9 — Catalan potser.
❌ Potser la Irene vingui després de sopar.
Spanish-influenced in the neutral contemporary standard — potser normally takes the indicative.
✅ Potser la Irene vindrà després de sopar.
Perhaps Irene will come after dinner.
The subjunctive becomes correct if the syntax changes: És possible que la Irene vingui després de sopar. Do not replace one form mechanically; identify the construction.
Repair the tense sequence after choosing the mood
Present subjunctive normally follows a present or future viewpoint for a simultaneous or later event. Imperfect subjunctive normally follows a past or hypothetical viewpoint. Perfect forms add anteriority. The full matrix appears on Which Subjunctive Tense?.
Repair 10 — past request, later event.
❌ Ahir ens van demanar que lliurem les credencials abans de marxar.
Incorrect in ordinary backshift — the request is past, so its still-later action takes the imperfect subjunctive.
✅ Ahir ens van demanar que lliuréssim les credencials abans de marxar.
Yesterday they asked us to hand in our badges before leaving.
Repair 11 — completion before a present reaction.
❌ Em tranquil·litza que ja resolguis la incidència.
Wrong for the intended completed result; resolguis presents the resolving as simultaneous or later.
✅ Em tranquil·litza que ja hagis resolt la incidència.
It reassures me that you've already resolved the incident.
Here the crossed sentence can be grammatical with another meaning: Em tranquil·litza que resolguis les incidències amb calma means “It reassures me that you deal with incidents calmly,” a simultaneous or habitual evaluation. The perfect is necessary only when prior completion matters.
Repair 12 — completion before a past reaction.
❌ Ens va estranyar que haguessin marxat demà al matí.
The pluperfect points backward, so it clashes with intended future-in-the-past demà.
✅ Ens va estranyar que marxessin l'endemà al matí.
We were surprised that they were leaving the following morning.
English transfer, Spanish contact, and regional forms
English-driven errors usually erase mood: want that, when the meeting ends, and a person who can help give the learner no visible warning. Spanish contact more often causes overextension: potser vingui, or a Spanish-looking ending substituted for a Catalan one. Diagnose the source because the remedy differs—English speakers need a clause-role test; Spanish-dominant speakers often need a Catalan-specific trigger and paradigm.
This page uses Central forms such as arribi, sàpiga, refem, haguessin. (regional: Valencian) standard forms such as arribe, sàpia, refem, hagueren/haguessen belong to the AVL norm where appropriate. Balearic, Northwestern, Northern, and Alguerese speech also has genuine morphological variation. Do not label a legitimate regional ending an error merely because it differs from the Central model. Mood selection itself belongs to everyday as well as (formal) Catalan.
Correction task
Correct each sentence for the reading in parentheses.
- No penso que aquesta solució funciona. (I reject it as likely.)
- Conec una traductora que domini l'alguerès. (I have a particular translator in mind.)
- Volíem que torneu abans de mitjanit. (A past wish.)
- Potser hagin cancel·lat el vol. (A tentative assertion with potser.)
Answers: No penso que aquesta solució funcioni; Conec una traductora que domina l'alguerès; Volíem que tornéssiu abans de mitjanit; Potser han cancel·lat el vol.
Common Mistakes
❌ Tant de bo demà fa sol a l'excursió.
A wish introduced by tant de bo requires the subjunctive.
✅ Tant de bo demà faci sol a l'excursió.
Let's hope it's sunny on tomorrow's outing.
❌ És clar que l'Èlia tingui raó en aquest punt.
The speaker asserts the conclusion; és clar que normally takes the indicative.
✅ És clar que l'Èlia té raó en aquest punt.
It's clear that Èlia is right on this point.
❌ Buscàvem un allotjament que té cuina pròpia.
Wrong for an unidentified place sought in the past.
✅ Buscàvem un allotjament que tingués cuina pròpia.
We were looking for accommodation that had its own kitchen.
Key Takeaways
- Choose mood from assertion status, identification, and clause type—not from truth alone.
- Wishes, influence, reactions, open antecedents, and pending future events normally require the subjunctive.
- Assertions after crec que, sé que, és clar que, and potser normally take the indicative.
- After selecting mood, choose tense from viewpoint and anteriority.
Final proofreading checklist
- Is the subordinate content asserted, or is it inside a wish, doubt, reaction, purpose, or evaluation?
- Is a relative-clause antecedent identified, still sought, or explicitly denied?
- Is a time clause habitual/known or a single pending future event?
- Did potser inherit a Spanish subjunctive that standard Catalan does not require?
- After choosing mood, did you locate the event relative to a present, past, or hypothetical viewpoint?
- Does anteriority require hagi + participle or hagués + participle?
- Have you preserved an accepted Valencian, Balearic, Northwestern, Northern, or Alguerese form instead of “correcting” it into Central Catalan?
