Past-Tense Errors

English simple past can translate several Catalan viewpoints: I worked may be vaig treballar for a bounded event, treballava for a past routine or background situation, or he treballat when the event belongs to a time frame that still includes the present. Learners therefore need more than a list of tense endings. They must decide how the speaker frames the event.

Catalan adds a visual trap: its most ordinary completed past is vaig parlar, built from a present-looking auxiliary plus a bare infinitive. It means “I spoke,” not “I am going to speak.” Avoiding this construction because it looks strange usually creates worse tense choices.

For a fuller semantic map, see the periphrastic-past versus imperfect contrast and present perfect versus periphrastic past.

The four-question diagnostic

  1. Is the situation presented as a bounded whole or as one event in a completed sequence? Use the periphrastic past: vaig arribar, vam decidir.
  2. Is it background, description, an ongoing situation, or a habit, with boundaries outside the focus? Use the imperfect: arribava, decidíem.
  3. Does the completed event belong to a period that still includes now, especially today in the traditional Central system? Use the present perfect: he arribat, hem decidit.
  4. Does anar express literal motion or a contextually licensed immediate action, or are you trying to express a broad neutral future? The first two can take a; the neutral future normally uses the future or present. Past vaig parlar has no a.
💡
Duration does not choose the tense. A twelve-year residence can be bounded—hi vam viure dotze anys—while a two-second sound can be background—sonava el timbre quan vaig obrir. What matters is the viewpoint.

Common Mistakes

The following twelve repairs tie each correction to an aspectual or structural decision.

1. A completed event inside a closed day

❌ Ahir treballava fins a les vuit i després tornava a casa amb metro.

Wrong viewpoint for the intended two-event sequence — the imperfect presents both as open background or routine.

✅ Ahir vaig treballar fins a les vuit i després vaig tornar a casa amb metro.

Yesterday I worked until eight and then went home by metro.

Ahir establishes a closed frame, and després orders two completed events. The periphrastic past advances the narrative.

2. Background already in progress

❌ Quan vas obrir la porta, nosaltres vam sopar.

Wrong for ‘we were having dinner’ — the periphrastic past makes dinner a subsequent bounded event.

✅ Quan vas obrir la porta, nosaltres sopàvem.

When you opened the door, we were having dinner.

The door opening is the foreground event; dinner is the situation underway around it. Catalan needs two viewpoints even though English uses past forms in both clauses.

3. A long but bounded interval

❌ La Mercè vivia a Tolosa durant nou anys i el 2022 va tornar.

Wrong for a closed nine-year period followed by a return.

✅ La Mercè va viure a Tolosa durant nou anys i el 2022 va tornar.

Mercè lived in Toulouse for nine years and returned in 2022.

The explicit duration and subsequent return reveal both boundaries. Long duration does not force the imperfect.

4. A repeated past habit

❌ Quan érem adolescents, vam quedar en aquesta plaça cada divendres.

Wrong for the intended routine — one bounded series is not being counted or summarized.

✅ Quan érem adolescents, quedàvem en aquesta plaça cada divendres.

When we were teenagers, we used to meet in this square every Friday.

Cada divendres inside an open life period describes what normally happened. The imperfect is the default habitual viewpoint.

5. A counted series is bounded

❌ Durant la reunió, la connexió fallava tres vegades.

Wrong for three counted failures within one completed meeting.

✅ Durant la reunió, la connexió va fallar tres vegades.

During the meeting, the connection failed three times.

Repetition alone does not require the imperfect. A count packages the occurrences as a completed set.

6. Use the present perfect inside today in the Central baseline

⚠️ Avui al matí vaig rebre la confirmació del laboratori.

Possible in some regional systems, but not the neutral traditional Central choice while today remains the active frame.

✅ Avui al matí he rebut la confirmació del laboratori.

This morning I received confirmation from the laboratory.

This is a baseline correction, not a claim that every speaker shares one hodiernal system. In traditional Central usage, avui includes now and favors the present perfect.

7. Close last year's event with the periphrastic past

⚠️ L'any passat hem traslladat el taller a Manresa.

Not the neutral traditional Central choice — last year is a closed period.

✅ L'any passat vam traslladar el taller a Manresa.

Last year we moved the workshop to Manresa.

Present relevance does not reopen a finished calendar frame. Even if the workshop remains in Manresa, the move occurred within l'any passat.

8. Do not insert a into the periphrastic past

❌ Dilluns passat vaig a parlar amb la tutora sobre les absències.

Incorrect for a completed past conversation — a creates another construction.

✅ Dilluns passat vaig parlar amb la tutora sobre les absències.

Last Monday I spoke with the tutor about the absences.

The completed past is auxiliary vaig plus bare infinitive. The look-alike vaig a parlar retains motion or a restricted immediate/intention reading.

9. Do not use the past construction as a neutral future

❌ Demà vaig presentar els resultats a l'equip.

Incorrect for a future plan — vaig presentar is morphologically past despite the time adverb.

✅ Demà presentaré els resultats a l'equip.

Tomorrow I'll present the results to the team.

For a scheduled event, the present is also natural: Demà presento els resultats. Catalan does not reinterpret bare vaig presentar as future in the way English may reinterpret a present progressive.

10. Do not overbuild a habitual progressive

❌ De petit, estava anant a casa dels cosins tots els diumenges.

Awkward for an ordinary recurring habit — the progressive focuses on an action in progress.

✅ De petit, anava a casa dels cosins tots els diumenges.

As a child, I used to go to my cousins' house every Sunday.

English “was going” can be either an action in progress or a past habit. Catalan normally uses the simple imperfect for the habitual reading.

11. The past auxiliary takes an infinitive, not a participle

❌ Ahir vam acabat l'inventari abans del previst.

Incorrect — the periphrastic past combines the auxiliary with a bare infinitive.

✅ Ahir vam acabar l'inventari abans del previst.

Yesterday we finished the inventory ahead of schedule.

The form acabat belongs in a compound tense with haver: hem acabat. After past auxiliary vam, use acabar.

12. Do not stack two finite past forms

❌ Quan he va arribar el tècnic, l'alarma encara sonava.

Incorrect — he and va are competing finite auxiliaries.

✅ Quan va arribar el tècnic, l'alarma encara sonava.

When the technician arrived, the alarm was still sounding.

Choose one construction. In the closed narrative frame, va arribar is the bounded foreground event; sonava supplies the ongoing background.

When both versions are grammatical but tell different stories

Quan va arribar la directora, vaig preparar el cafè.

When the director arrived, I made the coffee. — arrival first, preparation next.

Quan va arribar la directora, preparava el cafè.

When the director arrived, I was making the coffee. — preparation already in progress.

The supposedly “wrong” vaig preparar is completely grammatical. It is wrong only for the interrupted-background meaning. Tense correction must preserve event order.

Ara vaig a parlar amb la directora al seu despatx.

Now I'm going to speak with the director in her office. — present motion or immediate intention.

Abans de dinar vaig parlar amb la directora al seu despatx.

Before lunch I spoke with the director in her office. — completed past.

The preposition a is not a harmless optional word. It separates lexical or restricted prospective anar a from the grammaticalized past auxiliary plus infinitive.

Do not “fix” a legitimate simple past

Forms such as parlí, parlares, parlà, parlàrem, parlàreu, and parlaren are a synthetic simple past. They are common in literary and historical narrative (literary, formal) and remain alive in parts of the Valencian and Balearic domains (regional: Valencian; regional: Balearic). Replacing every parlà with va parlar may erase an intentional register or regional voice.

The periphrastic past is the broad conversational default across much of the language area. Regional auxiliary variants such as vares, vàrem, vàreu, and varen are also standard. (regional: Northern and Alguerese) contact and inherited systems can affect the balance among past forms. Past-time proofreading must identify the speaker's system before applying a Central frequency rule.

Present-perfect distribution varies too. Some speakers extend the compound tense beyond today; others use a periphrastic or synthetic form within contexts where the traditional Central model prefers he parlat. Mark such choices as regional or changing when relevant, not automatically ungrammatical.

Correction task

Choose the viewpoint before checking the answer: Mentre la canalla va jugar, els adults van preparar el dinar (simultaneous background intended); El 2019 hem obert la primera botiga; Cada vespre va llegir una estona (habit intended); Ahir vam a veure l'exposició.

Mentre la canalla jugava, els adults preparaven el dinar.

While the children were playing, the adults were preparing lunch. — simultaneous background.

El 2019 vam obrir la primera botiga.

In 2019 we opened the first shop. — closed historical frame.

Cada vespre llegia una estona.

Every evening she used to read for a while. — habit.

Ahir vam veure l'exposició.

Yesterday we saw the exhibition. — periphrastic past takes a bare infinitive.

What the pattern reveals

The twelve repairs above cover the recurring transfers: imperfect for every long action, periphrastic past for every repeated action, English simple past copied without viewpoint, present perfect extended mechanically into closed dates, and confusion between vaig parlar and vaig a parlar. Time adverbs help, but they do not replace analysis: durant un any may bound an event, while cada estiu may describe a habit or summarize a completed series depending on context.

💡
Ask what changes if you switch tense. If the new form changes “already in progress” to “happened next,” “habit” to “bounded series,” or “today” to “closed past,” the choice carries meaning and cannot be edited mechanically.

Key Takeaways

  • Use the periphrastic past for bounded wholes and completed narrative steps.
  • Use the imperfect for background, open states, actions in progress, and past habits.
  • In the traditional Central model, the present perfect connects a completed event to a time frame that includes now.
  • Vaig parlar is past; vaig a parlar has motion or a restricted prospective interpretation.
  • Preserve deliberate regional and literary past forms rather than normalizing them blindly.

Proofreading checklist

  • Is each past situation foreground event, background, habit, state, or counted series?
  • Are explicit boundaries such as dates, endpoints, and counts reflected in the viewpoint?
  • In interrupted-action sentences, is the ongoing situation in the imperfect?
  • Does a closed sequence advance with the periphrastic past?
  • Under the chosen regional model, does a period including now favor the present perfect?
  • Have you avoided using present relevance to override an explicitly closed date?
  • Does the periphrastic past have a bare infinitive with no inserted a?
  • If anar a + infinitive appears, is literal motion or a licensed immediate reading intended?
  • Have you preserved a deliberate literary or regional synthetic past?
  • Would changing the tense alter the chronology or only align the text with its intended regional baseline?
