Journalistic Collocations

News Catalan repeatedly uses combinations such as fer pública una decisió, fonts properes a la negociació, segons ha pogut saber aquest mitjà, and ha esclatat una crisi. These expressions compress recurring newsroom tasks: announcing a disclosure, attributing information, marking independent reporting, and presenting an event as suddenly developing.

Their familiarity is useful, but it creates two dangers. A learner may assemble a plausible phrase from English or Spanish that is not the preferred Catalan combination; a professional writer may rely on formulas so heavily that sources, agency, and evidence disappear. Journalistic competence requires both idiomatic phraseology and critical control over it.

Pattern grid

Stored frameFunctionVariable slotRegister/caution
fer públic/a/s/ques Xannounce or disclose Xdirect object; adjective agreesjournalistic/formal
segons fonts properes a Xattribute to unnamed informed sourcesinstitution, talks, casejournalistic; vague unless justified

obrir una investigació sobre Xannounce an official inquirytopic/person/eventformal/journalistic
desmentir categòricament Xreport a forceful denialclaim or reportjournalistic; attribute the denial

The frames include grammatical choices. Segons takes its source directly, without de. Esclatar is intransitive, so the crisis is the subject, not an object caused by an unnamed actor. In fer pública la decisió, pública agrees with decisió, not with the person who discloses it.

Fer públic: agreement reveals the structure

Fer públic + direct object means making information available to the public. Because públic is a predicative adjective describing that object, it changes form: fer públic l'acord, fer pública la llista, fer públics els resultats, fer públiques les actes.

La conselleria farà públics els resultats definitius dilluns al matí.

The ministry will make the final results public on Monday morning. (journalistic)

L'entitat ha fet públiques les actes de les dues darreres reunions.

The organization has made the minutes of the last two meetings public.

When a clitic replaces the direct object, the adjective still agrees with the referent: la decisió, la van fer pública; els noms, els van fer públics. The clitic attaches to the verb according to the ordinary placement rules; it does not replace the adjective.

La data exacta encara no l'han fet pública.

They have not yet made the exact date public.

The simple verb publicar may be more precise when an actual document is issued. Fer públic focuses on disclosure status, whereas publicar describes placing material in a publication or public channel.

Attribution with segons

Segons + source frames a proposition as originating with that source: segons la policia, segons l'informe, segons dos testimonis. It does not by itself tell the reader whether the newsroom verified the claim.

Segons els bombers, el foc ja està estabilitzat però encara no es considera controlat.

According to the fire service, the fire has been stabilized but is not yet considered under control.

Fonts properes a la negociació is a conventional way to protect informants who plausibly have access. The adjective properes agrees with plural fonts, and the preposition a introduces the sphere they are close to.

Fonts properes a la negociació asseguren que les dues parts reprendran els contactes demà.

Sources close to the negotiations say that both sides will resume talks tomorrow. (journalistic, anonymously attributed)

This wording is not a magic certificate of reliability. A responsible report explains, as far as source protection permits, why anonymity is necessary and how the source knows. Fonts ben informades or fonts solvents can be even emptier if the text supplies no basis for those evaluations.

💡
An attribution formula identifies the origin of a claim; it does not verify it. Keep source, access, confirmation status, and the newsroom's own knowledge distinct.

Segons ha pogut saber: a newsroom as knower

In segons ha pogut saber aquest diari/mitjà/emissora, the medium is grammatically the subject of ha pogut saber. The formula presents the information as reporting obtained by that organization, often before an official announcement.

Segons ha pogut saber aquest mitjà, el ple extraordinari se celebrarà dijous a les sis.

As this outlet has learned, the extraordinary plenary session will be held on Thursday at six. (journalistic)

The expression should not be used merely to make routine information sound exclusive. If the fact comes from a published agenda, write segons l'ordre del dia publicat. If a named official confirmed it, name that official. The formula is useful only when “how we know” genuinely belongs to the report.

English “we understand that” and Spanish newsroom formulas may tempt literal constructions. Catalan newsrooms have their own established frame; copying every word from another language can produce grammatical prose with an alien rhythm.

Esclatar: the event is the subject

Esclatar presents a war, controversy, protest, or crisis as beginning abruptly: esclata una crisi, va esclatar la polèmica, han esclatat protestes. In this use it is intransitive. The phrase esclatar una crisi in a dictionary heading names the combination, but in a finite clause the crisis itself normally agrees with the verb as subject.

La crisi va esclatar després que tres regidors abandonessin el govern municipal.

The crisis broke out after three councilors left the municipal government. (journalistic)

Han esclatat protestes en diverses ciutats arran de l'anunci.

Protests have broken out in several cities following the announcement.

Do not confuse this with fer esclatar, which explicitly introduces a cause: La filtració va fer esclatar la crisi. Nor does English “explode a crisis” license a transitive el govern va esclatar una crisi.

Three reusable frames

  1. institution + fer públic/a/s/ques + information: the adjective agrees with the information.
  2. segons + named or characterized source + finite claim: the source is direct, with no de.
  3. event noun + esclatar + time/cause adjunct: the event is the grammatical subject.

These frames admit modifiers while preserving their core. Dues fonts properes a la comissió adds number and provenance; va fer finalment pública la resolució íntegra adds timing and scope. The writer must still ask whether each modifier contributes verifiable information.

Literal image and journalistic effect

Esclatar literally describes bursting. Applied to a crisis, it highlights suddenness and drama. A plain alternative such as la crisi va començar is fully comprehensible and often more neutral; esclatar encourages readers to imagine a sharp rupture, even when tension developed gradually.

Les discrepàncies internes van començar mesos abans de la dimissió.

The internal disagreements began months before the resignation. (plain, chronological)

La dimissió va fer esclatar una crisi que es gestava des de feia mesos.

The resignation triggered a crisis that had been brewing for months. (dramatic event boundary, but with prior development acknowledged)

Likewise, fer públic casts information as previously withheld and now disclosed. If no meaningful secrecy existed, anunciar or publicar may be more accurate.

Attribution, the conditional, and evidential responsibility

Catalan journalistic prose can use the conditional to mark unconfirmed reported information: el ministre hauria presentat la dimissió. The conditional does not replace attribution. Combining it with a named source or a description of the verification status lets readers evaluate the claim.

El director hauria comunicat la renúncia al patronat, segons dues persones presents a la reunió; l'entitat encara no ho ha confirmat.

The director reportedly informed the board of his resignation, according to two people present at the meeting; the organization has not yet confirmed it. (journalistic, unconfirmed)

The final clause is not redundant: it distinguishes direct witness reporting from official confirmation. See the pages on evidential responsibility and the journalistic conditional.

Cliché awareness

News formulas become clichés when they replace observation. Saltar totes les alarmes, una pluja de crítiques, un gir de 180 graus, sacsejar l'opinió pública, and una crisi sense precedents may be justified, but each makes a large evaluative claim. Ask which alarm, how many criticisms, what changed, whose opinion, and what historical comparison supports “unprecedented.”

L'anunci va desfermar una pluja de crítiques a les xarxes.

The announcement unleashed a flood of criticism on social media. (journalistic cliché unless the scale is documented)

Durant les sis hores posteriors a l'anunci, el consistori va rebre 1.240 missatges crítics.

During the six hours after the announcement, the council received 1,240 critical messages. (specific alternative)

The first may suit a headline or a column; the second gives the reader auditable magnitude. Straight news generally benefits from replacing inherited drama with measured detail.

Mini-dialogue: reporter and editor

—Puc escriure «segons fonts properes al cas»? —Només si n'expliquem l'accés i protegim la identitat. Si la dada surt de l'atestat, atribuïm-la directament a l'atestat.

—Can I write 'according to sources close to the case'? —Only if we explain their access and protect their identity. If the information comes from the police report, attribute it directly to the report. (newsroom conversation)

The clitic n' in n'expliquem l'accés resumes the source group in a de-relationship (“explain their access”). It does not form part of the quoted attribution formula.

Register and regional range

The central frames are used across contemporary Catalan journalism, including IEC- and AVL-oriented publications. Newsroom style guides may prefer one tense, quotation practice, or institutional label, and local political vocabulary naturally varies. Those editorial differences do not alter the agreement in fer pública la decisió or the source syntax after segons.

Headlines tolerate compression: articles and auxiliaries may disappear when the meaning remains recoverable. That license belongs to headline style, not automatically to the body text. A full report should restore enough grammar to make agency, time, and attribution explicit.

Common Mistakes

❌ El govern ha fet públic la resolució.

Incorrect agreement — públic describes the feminine noun resolució.

✅ El govern ha fet pública la resolució.

The government has made the resolution public.

❌ Segons de fonts properes a l'empresa, hi haurà canvis.

Incorrect transferred preposition — segons takes the source directly.

✅ Segons fonts properes a l'empresa, hi haurà canvis.

According to sources close to the company, there will be changes.

❌ L'alcalde va esclatar una crisi amb les seves declaracions.

Incorrect transitive use — a crisis esclata, or an action fa esclatar a crisis.

✅ Les declaracions de l'alcalde van fer esclatar una crisi.

The mayor's statements triggered a crisis.

❌ Les actes, les han fet públic aquest matí.

Incorrect predicative agreement after clitic replacement.

✅ Les actes, les han fet públiques aquest matí.

They made the minutes public this morning.

⚠️ La notícia sobre els acomiadaments acaba amb «qui dia passa, any empeny».

The proverb is grammatically Catalan but socially flippant in straight reporting about people's livelihoods.

✅ La notícia acaba detallant el calendari de negociació i la resposta dels treballadors.

The report ends by detailing the negotiation schedule and the workers' response. (appropriate straight-news register)

Key Takeaways

  • In fer públic/a/s/ques, the adjective agrees with the information disclosed, including when a clitic replaces it.
  • Segons introduces a source directly; anonymous-source formulas require a genuine reason and enough context to assess access.
  • Segons ha pogut saber X claims newsroom reporting and should not decorate information already available in a public document.
  • A crisis esclata; a cause fa esclatar the crisis. The intransitive structure and the dramatic image matter.
  • Journalistic collocations save space, but specific sourcing and measured detail are usually stronger than cliché.
