Catalan speakers across the language area share a large grammatical and phraseological core, yet they do not always choose the same stored expression for the same everyday act. A Central speaker may say fer-hi una ullada, while a Valencian speaker may naturally say pegar-li una ullada, and both can understand the other. The difference is not merely a choice between two dictionary verbs: each community conventionalizes a whole frame, including its article, preposition, clitic, and pragmatic setting.
This page uses Central Catalan as its descriptive starting point while treating Valencian, Balearic, and Northwestern patterns as equally legitimate parts of contemporary Catalan. Northern and Alguerese options are mentioned where they illuminate the same principle. Regional labels describe distribution, not quality; shared standard does not mean “more genuine,” and regional does not mean “incorrect.”
A pattern grid: same function, different stored frame
| Communicative function | Common frame | Regional preference | What is fixed |
|---|---|---|---|
| look briefly | fer una ullada a X | very widespread; Central baseline | una ullada and a |
| look briefly | pegar una ullada a X | (regional: Valencian, informal-neutral) | the light verb pegar, una ullada, and a |
| go for a walk | fer un tomb / fer una volta | fer una volta is broadly shared; fer un tomb is especially familiar in Central usage | the article and noun; destination may vary |
| go for a walk | pegar una volta | (regional: Valencian, informal-neutral) | pegar una volta as a unit |
| infer or open a response | doncs sí / doncs no | widespread | the marker plus the response |
| infer or open a response | idò sí / idò no | (regional: Balearic, informal-neutral) | idò and its local interactional timing |
| dismiss a claim | i ara! / au, va! | broadly understood; frequency varies | the full response formula |
| dismiss a claim | ca! | widespread colloquial use; frequency and companion formulas vary regionally | the interjection and emphatic contour |
No row is a mechanical translation key. Idò overlaps with some uses of doncs, for example, but not every occurrence of doncs can simply be replaced by idò. Phraseological equivalence is function-by-function: what does the turn accomplish here, with this listener, in this regional interaction?
Light verbs vary with the whole construction
Valencian pegar participates in conventional light-verb frames in which Central usage generally favors fer. The lexical meaning of pegar is not “to make”; in these phrases it helps package a bounded act. The noun and preposition identify the act, and the verb carries tense and person.
Quan tingues un moment, pega una ullada al pressupost i em dius què et sembla.
When you have a moment, take a look at the budget and tell me what you think. (regional: Valencian, informal-neutral)
Quan tinguis un moment, fes una ullada al pressupost i digues-me què et sembla.
When you have a moment, take a look at the budget and tell me what you think. (Central baseline)
The explicit complement follows a in both frames. Its pronominal realization, however, is itself part of the regional pattern: Central usage normally has fes-hi una ullada, whereas Valencian very commonly has pega-li una ullada. Treating the two constructions as identical except for the verb would erase a genuine clitic preference.
Aquest informe és llarg, però pega-li una ullada abans de la reunió.
This report is long, but take a look at it before the meeting. (regional: Valencian)
Aquest informe és llarg, però fes-hi una ullada abans de la reunió.
This report is long, but take a look at it before the meeting. (Central baseline)
The same principle applies to movement expressions. Fer una volta is widely available, while pegar una volta is a natural Valencian choice. Fer un tomb is familiar in Central speech. These expressions can all describe a short walk or circuit, but their local frequency and tone differ.
Després de sopar farem una volta pel barri.
After dinner we'll take a walk around the neighborhood. (shared standard)
Després de sopar pegarem una volta pel barri.
After dinner we'll take a walk around the neighborhood. (regional: Valencian, informal-neutral)
Three substitutable frames
The following frames are productive inside their own phraseological limits:
- fer/pegar una ullada a + document, pantalla, lloc: the object of looking fills the a-slot; the common pronominal forms are Central fer-hi una ullada and Valencian pegar-li una ullada.
- fer/pegar una volta per + place: the route fills the per-slot; a destination may instead use fins a.
- doncs/idò + response: sí, no, ja ho veurem, or a full clause can follow, but regional discourse timing matters as much as the word.
The first two allow ordinary verbal inflection: vaig fer, pegarem, havien fet. Their nouns normally keep the indefinite article. Saying fer ullada or pegar la ullada changes the stored frame rather than merely its style.
Balearic response phraseology
Balearic idò can mark an inference, launch an answer, accept a proposal, or help close an exchange. Its closest English rendering may be “so,” “then,” “well,” or nothing at all. Central doncs overlaps with those functions, but the particles carry different regional histories and conversational rhythms.
—Partim a les vuit? —Idò sí, així arribarem abans de la calor.
—Shall we leave at eight? —Yes then, that way we'll arrive before the heat. (regional: Balearic)
—Marxem a les vuit? —Doncs sí, així arribarem abans de la calor.
—Shall we leave at eight? —Yes, that way we'll arrive before the heat. (Central baseline)
Likewise, Balearic uep may call for attention, Valencian xe can mark stance or summon an interlocutor, Northwestern speech may give distinctive frequency and contour to shared particles such as rai, Northern Catalan has local response particles such as hò, and Alguerese has its own interactional repertoire. These are not decorative badges. Use them coherently with the regional system and relationship you actually command; the regional markers page treats their turn-by-turn functions.
Literal image and idiomatic function
The literal image of pegar una ullada might suggest “sticking a glance,” just as English “take a look” might suggest physically taking something. Neither language computes the expression word by word. Catalan speakers retrieve a conventional brief-looking event whose internal choices differ by region.
Vaig dirigir una mirada ràpida al document abans de signar-lo.
I directed a quick glance at the document before signing it. (comprehensible, but nonidiomatic and overly composed for an everyday quick look)
Hi vaig fer una ullada abans de signar-lo.
I took a look at it before signing it. (idiomatic Central/shared frame)
The first sentence is grammatical and understandable. That is precisely why collocational errors are difficult: possibility is not the same as habitual phraseology. A regional alternative should be compared with actual conventional frames, not with an invented word-for-word paraphrase.
Articles, clitics, and inflectional freedom
In fer una ullada, the verb inflects freely, the noun remains singular for one brief look, and the article normally stays una. The complement is introduced by a and is resumed by hi. In adonar-se de X, another widespread stored frame, both the reflexive se and the preposition de belong to the construction; en can resume the complement: se'n va adonar.
No me'n vaig adonar fins que ja érem a l'estació.
I didn't realize it until we were already at the station. (shared standard)
The existence of regional synonyms does not make these internal dependencies optional. Formal IEC- or AVL-oriented prose may favor broadly shared vocabulary in cross-regional documents, but both standards recognize territorial variation. A writer should choose consistently for audience and genre rather than treating one territory's everyday frame as universal.
Mini-dialogue: equivalent frames, coherent varieties
—Has mirat el cartell nou? —Sí, li he pegat una ullada. Esta vesprada pegarem una volta pel centre i el veurem penjat. —Perfecte; au, ja em contaràs què en pensa la gent.
—Have you looked at the new poster? —Yes, I've taken a look at it. This afternoon we'll walk around the center and see it displayed. —Perfect; right, tell me later what people think. (regional: Valencian, informal)
The light verb pegar, the demonstrative esta, vesprada, and the closing au form a coherent Valencian exchange. Replacing one word with a conspicuous token from another region would not make the turn “more Catalan”; it would make its social and regional voice less coherent.
Register and social setting
Regional phraseology crosses registers unevenly. Pegar una ullada can be ordinary in Valencian conversation, while a cross-regional administrative report may choose examinar or revisar for precision. Ca!, xe, uep, and emphatic au belong mainly to speech or represented dialogue. A proverb can be perfectly grammatical and still be wrong for a solemn condolence, a disciplinary hearing, or a scientific conclusion.
⚠️ Qui dia passa, any empeny; ja revisarem els riscos de l'operació més endavant.
The proverb means roughly 'get through one day at a time,' but here it trivializes risk in a formal medical setting.
Revisarem els riscos abans de prendre cap decisió sobre l'operació.
We will review the risks before making any decision about the operation. (formal and appropriate)
Common Mistakes
❌ Vaig prendre una mirada ràpida a l'informe.
Incorrect English assembly: Catalan does not build everyday 'take a look' with prendre + mirada.
✅ Vaig fer una ullada a l'informe.
I took a look at the report. (Central/shared frame)
❌ Vaig donar un passeig pel barri.
Spanish-influenced light verb: standard Catalan uses fer, not donar, in this everyday frame.
✅ Vaig fer una passejada pel barri.
I took a walk around the neighborhood.
❌ He fet la ullada al pressupost.
Incorrect frozen article and elision: the conventional frame is fer una ullada a.
✅ Hi he fet una ullada.
I've taken a look at it.
❌ No vaig adonar que havien canviat l'hora.
Incorrect: the stored frame requires the reflexive clitic, adonar-se.
✅ No em vaig adonar que havien canviat l'hora.
I didn't realize that they had changed the time.
⚠️ Uep, senyora presidenta, això és bufar i fer ampolles!
Grammatical words, but a Balearic attention cry and an informal idiom are poorly matched to a solemn institutional address without a deliberate rhetorical reason.
✅ Senyora presidenta, aquesta qüestió es pot resoldre amb facilitat.
Madam President, this matter can be resolved easily. (formal)
Key Takeaways
- Regional phraseology consists of whole grammatical frames, not isolated colorful words.
- Fer/pegar una ullada a X preserves its article, noun, and preposition, but its common pronominal form also varies: Central fer-hi, Valencian pegar-li.
- Central doncs and Balearic idò, or formulas such as i ara!, au, va!, and ca!, overlap only in particular pragmatic functions and distributions.
- A grammatical paraphrase may remain nonidiomatic; compare frequency, genre, and region before treating it as an equivalent collocation.
- Use Central, Valencian, Balearic, Northwestern, Northern, or Alguerese forms coherently and label them without ranking their authenticity.
