Blends and Modern Coinages

Modern Standard Arabic usually enlarges its vocabulary through familiar resources: root-and-pattern derivation, compounding, semantic extension, borrowing, and calquing. It can also compress material from two expressions into one word. Arabic discussions commonly call such compression نحت “coining by carving,” but the label covers several structures that English may call blending, clipping, or a combining-form compound.

The central discipline is lexical: analyze an attested coinage, but do not treat its shape as a machine for inventing unlimited new words. زمكان “space-time” is a documented blend of زمان and مكان. By contrast, كهرومغناطيسي “electromagnetic” contains a recurrent technical combining form كهروـ, and حاسوب “computer” is native-root derivation rather than a blend. Similar-looking outputs may therefore have different histories and different degrees of productivity.

Use Derivation from Root and Pattern as the baseline for ordinary families, and compare Back-Formation and Reanalysis when a longer modern word appears to have supplied a shorter stem.

First classify the process

ProcessExampleWhat survivesRegister/productivity
ordinary derivationحسب ← حاسوبroot ح-س-ب in an Arabic patternproductive patterns, but individual words still require verification
blend or نحتزمان + مكان ← زمكانparts of two lexical baseslexicalized, technical; weak model for spontaneous coinage
combining-form compoundكهروـ + مغناطيسيa clipped technical first element plus a full adjectiveproductive inside specialist terminology
borrowingراديوa foreign lexical stem adapted to Arabic writing and syntaxestablished; further derivation varies by word
calqueحوسبة سحابيةthe foreign concept translated element by elementproductive at phrase level; terminology may compete
planned coinageحاسوب، زمكانany of the resources above, selected deliberatelyacceptance depends on institutions and users

These categories can overlap. A planned term may be a blend, a semantic extension, or a derived word. “Planned” describes how a form was promoted; “blend” describes its internal construction.

💡
Ask two separate questions: “How was this expression built?” and “Where is it actually used?” Morphology answers the first; dictionaries, terminology banks, and comparable contemporary texts answer the second.

زمكان: an attested blend, not a new inherited root

زمكان combines material from زمان “time” and مكان “place/space.” It is masculine and especially at home in physics and philosophy (academic/technical). The adjective زمكاني “spatiotemporal” is built from the established whole word with the nisba suffix ـيّ. This later derivation does not prove that Arabic inherited a root ز-م-ك.

صاغ الفيزيائيون مصطلح الزمكان لوصف اتصال الزمان بالمكان.

ṣāgha l-fīziyāʾiyyūna muṣṭalaḥa z-zamakāni li-waṣfi ttiṣāli z-zamāni bi-l-makān.

Physicists coined the term ‘space-time’ to describe the connection of time and space. (academic/technical)

تبحث الورقة في بنية الزمكان المنحني.

tabḥathu l-waraqatu fī binyati z-zamakāni l-munḥaniyy.

The paper examines the structure of curved space-time. (academic/technical)

The word is semantically transparent once its sources are supplied, but its exact clipping is lexicalized: Arabic speakers do not have a general rule “take the first consonants of noun A and attach all of noun B.” In ordinary public prose, المكان والزمان may be clearer when relativity is not the topic.

برمائي: compression followed by ordinary agreement

برمائي relates البر “land” and الماء “water.” It functions as an adjective meaning “amphibious,” with ordinary gender and agreement: مركبة برمائية. The substantivized sound feminine plural البرمائيات names the zoological class “amphibians.” Once lexicalized, the output behaves like an Arabic adjective or noun even though its internal formation is compressed.

تعمل المركبة البرمائية على البر وفي الماء.

taʿmalu l-markabatu l-barramāʾiyyatu ʿalā l-barri wa-fī l-māʾ.

The amphibious vehicle operates on land and in water. (technical/general formal)

تعيش البرمائيات في بيئات شديدة التنوع.

taʿīshu l-barramāʾiyyātu fī bīʾātin shadīdati t-tanawwuʿ.

Amphibians live in highly diverse environments. (scientific/general formal)

Do not infer a productive verb or a false root from the surface string برم. The useful family here is the attested adjective and zoological plural, not every shape that a learner can imagine around those consonants.

Technical combining forms are not all alike

In كهرومغناطيسي, كهروـ is a bound technical element connected with كهرباء “electricity,” followed by مغناطيسي “magnetic.” It recurs in terms such as كهروميكانيكي “electromechanical.” Because it appears in a restricted specialist series, it is more productive than the one-off clipping in زمكان, yet it is not a free adjective that can be attached indiscriminately.

يقيس المختبر المجال الكهرومغناطيسي حول الجهاز.

yaqīsu l-mukhtabaru l-majāla l-kahrūmaghnāṭīsiyya ḥawla l-jihāz.

The laboratory measures the electromagnetic field around the device. (scientific/technical)

راجع المهندسون مواصفات النظام الكهروميكانيكي.

rājaʿa l-muhandisūna muwāṣafāti n-niẓāmi l-kahrūmīkānīkiyy.

The engineers reviewed the electromechanical system specifications. (technical)

The final adjective controls agreement. المجال الكهرومغناطيسي is masculine singular; الظواهر الكهرومغناطيسية has feminine singular agreement because ظواهر is a nonhuman plural. The clipped first element does not create a special agreement system.

Coinage competes with derivation, borrowing, and calque

Arabic rarely needs a blend simply because English has a single word. A transparent phrase is often better. حوسبة سحابية “cloud computing” combines an established verbal noun with a relational adjective; راديو is an established loan; حاسوب uses Arabic derivation. All three can be perfectly good contemporary Arabic.

اعتمد الدليل مصطلح حوسبة سحابية وعرفه عند أول استعمال.

iʿtamada d-dalīlu muṣṭalaḥa ḥawsabatin saḥābiyyatin wa-ʿarrafahu ʿinda ʾawwali stiʿmāl.

The guide adopted the term ‘cloud computing’ and defined it at first use. (formal/technical)

نقل المراسل الخبر عبر الراديو ثم نشره على الموقع.

naqala l-murāsilu l-khabara ʿabra r-rādyū thumma nasharahu ʿalā l-mawqiʿ.

The correspondent relayed the news by radio and then posted it on the website. (neutral contemporary usage)

ثبت المحرر كلمة حاسوب في جميع فصول الدليل.

thabbata l-muḥarriru kalimata ḥāsūbin fī jamīʿi fuṣūli d-dalīl.

The editor standardized the word ḥāsūb throughout all chapters of the guide. (formal editorial usage)

💡
A successful modern term needs three kinds of fit: a recoverable concept, acceptable Arabic form, and real uptake in the intended community. Formal-looking morphology supplies only the second.

Verify without copying

For a proposed or unfamiliar coinage, consult an authoritative general dictionary, a specialist terminology bank, and recent texts from the relevant field. Record spelling, vocalization, gender, plural, collocations, country, institution, and date. Then write an original example. A dictionary entry proves recognition; it does not prove that the term is dominant in every country or genre.

Productivity must be stated narrowly. كهروـ recurs in a technical series; زمكان supports زمكاني; البرمائيات is a settled zoological plural. None licenses arbitrary clipping of any two words.

Common Mistakes

Inventing a false inherited root for a blend

❌ جذر زمكان هو ز م ك.

Incorrect — زمكان is an attested blend of زمان and مكان, not evidence for an inherited triliteral root.

✅ زمكان كلمة منحوتة من زمان ومكان.

zamakānun kalimatun manḥūtatun min zamānin wa-makān.

Zamakān is a word blended from zamān and makān.

Assuming that every transparent invention is accepted

❌ كل كلمة أفهم أجزاءها تصبح مصطلحا معياريا.

Incorrect — transparency does not establish institutional or public uptake.

✅ أتحقق من استعمال المصطلح في معجم متخصص ونصوص حديثة.

ʾataḥaqqaqu mini stiʿmāli l-muṣṭalaḥi fī muʿjamin mutakhaṣṣiṣin wa-nuṣūṣin ḥadītha(h).

I verify the term's use in a specialist dictionary and recent texts.

Regularizing the plural of every modern word

❌ جمع برنامج هو برنامجات دائما.

Incorrect — the established plural of برنامج is برامج; a modern or borrowed history does not guarantee ـات.

✅ راجعت ثلاثة برامج لتحليل البيانات.

rājaʿtu thalāthata barāmija li-taḥlīli l-bayānāt.

I reviewed three programs for data analysis.

Replacing an attested familiar term with opaque purism

❌ حذف المحرر كلمة الإنترنت لمجرد أنها مقترضة.

Poor editorial reasoning — foreign origin alone does not make an established word unsuitable.

✅ أبقى المحرر كلمة الإنترنت لأنها واضحة لجمهور الدليل.

ʾabqā l-muḥarriru kalimata l-ʾintarniti li-ʾannahā wāḍiḥatun li-jumhūri d-dalīl.

The editor retained the word ‘internet’ because it is clear to the guide's audience.

Key Takeaways

  • Separate blends, combining forms, derivation, borrowing, calques, and planned adoption.
  • Treat زمكان and برمائي as attested lexical items, not unrestricted templates.
  • Apply ordinary Arabic gender, agreement, and derivation to an accepted output.
  • Verify form and uptake in authoritative sources and comparable current texts, then write original examples.
  • Prefer the term that is accurate, comprehensible, and consistent for the real audience—not the term with the most visibly “Arabic” surface.
