Not every Arabic root has three radicals. Productive quadriliteral families have four: د-ح-ر-ج in دَحْرَجَ “roll something,” ت-ر-ج-م in تَرْجَمَ “translate,” and ب-ر-م-ج in بَرْمَجَ “program.” Their basic verbal template is conventionally written فَعْلَلَ faʿlala, repeating ل to represent the fourth slot.
Forcing these words into a triliteral analysis usually deletes a real consonant or mislabels one as an affix. Quadriliteral roots also have their own verbal nouns and participles, plus a common derived pattern beginning with تـ. Treat the pattern as a map of attested words, not a factory: four consonants that fit the slots do not automatically form a usable verb. The root-and-pattern overview provides the general method.
Four slots in فعلل
Arabic reuses ل for both the third and fourth positions:
| Template position | د-ح-ر-ج | ت-ر-ج-م | ب-ر-م-ج |
|---|---|---|---|
| ف, first | د | ت | ب |
| ع, second | ح | ر | ر |
| ل, third | ر | ج | م |
| ل, fourth | ج | م | ج |
| فَعْلَلَ | دَحْرَجَ | تَرْجَمَ | بَرْمَجَ |

برمج المهندس النظام لإرسال تنبيه تلقائي
barmaja l-muhandisu n-niẓāma liʾirsāli tanbīhin tilqāʾiyy
The engineer programmed the system to send an automatic alert.
Substituting ت-ر-ج-م for د-ح-ر-ج in the same four slots demonstrates the shared form. Their unrelated lexical meanings show why فعلل cannot have one fixed English translation.
A full quadriliteral family
Basic quadriliteral verbs commonly have imperfect يُفَعْلِلُ, verbal noun فَعْلَلَة, active participle مُفَعْلِل, and passive participle مُفَعْلَل. Root ت-ر-ج-م gives:
| Function | Form | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| perfect | تَرْجَمَ | he translated |
| imperfect | يُتَرْجِمُ | he translates |
| verbal noun | تَرْجَمَة | translation; translating |
| active participle | مُتَرْجِم | translator; translating |
| passive participle | مُتَرْجَم | translated |

Initial ت in ترجم is the first radical, not the تـ of a derived triliteral Form V or VI. The stable family ترجم، ترجمة، مترجم confirms all four radicals.
The t-derived quadriliteral pattern
A common derived pattern adds تـ before the four-radical base: تَفَعْلَلَ. With دحرج, transitive “roll something,” attested تدحرج means “roll/tumble” without an expressed external roller. This intransitive or reflexive relationship is common, not automatic for every root.
دحرج الطفل الكرة إلى أسفل المنحدر
daḥraja ṭ-ṭiflu l-kurata ʾilā ʾasfali l-munḥadar
The child rolled the ball down the slope.
تدحرجت الكرة حتى اصطدمت بالسياج
tadaḥrajati l-kuratu ḥattā ṣṭadamat bis-siyāj
The ball rolled until it hit the fence.
The first sentence has an external agent and object; the second presents the ball’s motion. That contrast belongs to this attested pair, not to an unrestricted rule that every تفعلل must be an English reflexive.
Historically, مَرْكَز “center” is a place noun from ر-ك-ز. As a lexicalized noun, however, it has become the base of a synchronic denominal quadriliteral family م-ر-ك-ز: verb مَرْكَزَ “centralize/position centrally” and common derived تَمَرْكَزَ “be centered; be stationed.”
تمركزت فرق الإنقاذ قرب المنطقة المتضررة
tamarkazat firaqu l-ʾinqādhi qurba l-minṭaqati l-mutaḍarrira
The rescue teams positioned themselves near the affected area.
This is (formal) contemporary usage in news and administrative prose.
Reduplicative quadriliterals
Some quadriliteral roots repeat a two-consonant sequence: ز-ل-ز-ل in زَلْزَلَ “shake,” و-س-و-س in وَسْوَسَ “whisper/insinuate,” and ز-ق-ز-ق in زَقْزَقَ “chirp.” Repetition may be historically expressive, but synchronically the family has four slots.
زلزل الانفجار نوافذ المباني القريبة
zalzala l-infijāru nawāfidha l-mabānī l-qarība
The explosion shook the windows of nearby buildings.
تزلزلت الثقة بالمؤسسة بعد نشر الوثائق
tazalzalati th-thiqatu bil-muʾassasati baʿda nashri l-wathāʾiq
Confidence in the institution was shaken after the documents were published.
زقزقت الطيور في الحديقة عند الفجر
zaqzaqati ṭ-ṭuyūru fī l-ḥadīqati ʿinda l-fajr
The birds chirped in the garden at dawn.
Do not reduce ز-ل-ز-ل to triliteral ز-ل-ل merely because consonants repeat. A geminate triliteral has identical second and third slots; a reduplicative quadriliteral has four slots arranged ABAB.
Modern coinages use the quadriliteral system
Contemporary MSA can build quadriliteral verbs from modern nouns and concepts. رَقْمَنَ / رَقْمَنَة “digitize/digitization,” حَوْسَبَ / حَوْسَبَة “computerize/computerization,” and تَلْفَزَ / تَلْفَزَة “televise/televising” fit Arabic morphology while reflecting modern lexical needs.

حوسبت الوزارة إجراءات التسجيل تدريجيا

تلفزت القناة المناظرة على الهواء مباشرة
talfazati l-qanātu l-munāẓarata ʿalā l-hawāʾi mubāshara

These are (formal, technical) or media-register words. Acceptance, preferred terminology, and precise senses are lexical and can change by field. A recognizably Arabic pattern does not prove that every imaginable coinage has entered standard usage.
Do not force a triliteral family
Sometimes a quadriliteral word resembles a triliteral derivative. برمج contains initial ب, not a preposition, and medial م is not an added participial prefix. Its family برنامج، برمج، برمجة، مبرمج supports a synchronically useful four-consonant analysis ب-ر-م-ج.

Historical origin and modern morphological behavior are separate questions. The next page on borrowed stems explains why a loan can participate in Arabic morphology without having an inherited triliteral root.
Common Mistakes
Removing a real radical to force three slots
❌ جذر ترجم هو ر ج م والتاء زائدة
Incorrect in synchronic quadriliteral analysis—ت is stable across ترجم، ترجمة، مترجم.
✅ يبين المعجم أسرة ترجم ذات الجذر ت ر ج م
yubayyinu l-muʿjamu ʾusrata tarjama dhāta l-jidhri t r j m
The dictionary shows the tarjama family with root t-r-j-m.
Counting a reduplicative root as geminate triliteral
❌ جذر زلزل هو ز ل ل
Incorrect — the synchronic quadriliteral sequence is ز-ل-ز-ل.
✅ تتكرر ز ل في الجذر الرباعي ز ل ز ل
tatakarraru z l fī l-jidhri r-rubāʿiyyi z l z l
The sequence z-l repeats in the quadriliteral root z-l-z-l.
Treating every initial ت as a derived prefix
❌ التاء زائدة في ترجم كما هي في تدحرج
Incorrect — ت is radical in ترجم but added in تَدَحْرَجَ.
✅ أقارن ترجم بترجمة وتدحرج بدحرجة
ʾuqārinu tarjama bitarjamatin watadaḥraja bidaḥraja
I compare the verb tarjama with tarjama ‘translation,’ and tadaḥraja with daḥraja ‘rolling.’
Giving فعلل one fixed meaning
❌ كل فعل على فعلل يعني الحركة المتكررة
Incorrect — ترجم and برمج do not mean repeated motion.
✅ أتعلم معنى كل فعل رباعي من استعماله
ʾataʿallamu maʿnā kulli fiʿlin rubāʿiyyin mini stiʿmālih
I learn each quadriliteral verb’s meaning from its usage.
Assuming every modern four-consonant output is established
❌ يمكنني صنع مصطلح رباعي من أي اسم
Incorrect — successful coinages require attested specialist and public usage.
✅ أتحقق من المصطلح الحديث في معجم متخصص
ʾataḥaqqaqu mina l-muṣṭalaḥi l-ḥadīthi fī muʿjamin mutakhaṣṣiṣ
I verify the modern term in a specialist dictionary.
Key Takeaways
- فعلل has four radical slots; the repeated ل is a fourth placeholder.
- Basic families commonly include فعلل، يفعلل، فعللة، مفعلل, with participial vowel differences shown by context.
- تفعلل often relates intransitively or reflexively to an attested base, but meanings remain lexical.
- Reduplicative and modern quadriliterals are genuine four-slot families and must not be forced into triliteral analysis.
