Arabic borrows nouns, but it can also integrate a borrowed or newly coined stem into Arabic morphology. فِهْرِس “index” supports فَهْرَسَ، فَهْرَسَة، مُفَهْرِس; بَرْنَامَج “program” supports بَرْمَجَ، بَرْمَجَة، مُبَرْمِج. These modern families behave like Arabic derivatives, yet forcing them back to an inherited three-radical root can produce false analyses.
Borrowing is a continuum. Some items remain relatively opaque stems, such as إنترنت “internet.” Others yield adjectives, plurals, and verbs. Still others establish a productive quadriliteral family. The safest synchronic question is “What forms do contemporary MSA speakers actually use together?” Historical origin is informative but does not replace current morphology. Review quadriliteral roots and patterns for the four-slot template.
Three levels of integration
| Level | Example | Safe analysis |
|---|---|---|
| borrowed noun used as a stem | إِنْتَرْنِت، رَادْيُو، فِيدْيُو | learn the whole lexical stem; do not invent a root |
| noun with Arabic extensions | تِلْفِزْيُون → تِلْفِزْيُونِيّ | an Arabic suffix can attach without proving a root |
| integrated derivational family | فَهْرَسَ، فَهْرَسَة، مُفَهْرِس | a useful synchronic quadriliteral family ف-ه-ر-س |

The institution published the report online this morning.
The article and case ending show that إنترنت participates in Arabic syntax. They do not establish a root ن-ت-ر or make initial إنـ a removable Arabic prefix.

The team prepared a television report on the study results.
Nisba suffix ـيّ integrates تلفزيون adjectivally. A derivational suffix alone still does not prove an inherited consonantal root.
فهرس: a borrowed noun in a four-slot family
Modern MSA uses فِهْرِس “index/catalogue,” verb فَهْرَسَ “index/catalogue,” verbal noun فَهْرَسَة, and active participle مُفَهْرِس. Their stable consonants support synchronic four-slot ف-ه-ر-س.

The basic verb fills quadriliteral فَعْلَلَ, and فهرسة fills فَعْلَلَة. That formal success reflects attested usage. It does not mean every borrowed four-consonant noun automatically yields the same paradigm.
برنامج and the reshaped family برمج
Borrowed noun بَرْنَامَج contains more material than the productive verb family بَرْمَجَ، بَرْمَجَة، مُبَرْمِج، مُبَرْمَج. Contemporary analysis usefully treats the derivatives with four stable radicals ب-ر-م-ج, while retaining برنامج as the lexical noun that helped motivate the family.
برمج المهندس التطبيق لإرسال إشعار يومي

It would be misleading to “restore” an imaginary inherited triliteral root or to claim that every consonant in برنامج occupies the verb’s radical slots. The synchronic family is regular enough to navigate, but its history and internal reshaping are lexical facts.
Substitute only between attested loan families
Media verb دَبْلَجَ “dub” forms دَبْلَجَة “dubbing” and مُدَبْلَج “dubbed.” It can be mapped onto the same four-slot base template as فَهْرَسَ, but the substitution is valid because both families are established.

The students watched the dubbed version after class.
The shared morphology says nothing like “فعلل always means adapt foreign media.” فهرس concerns indexing; دبلج concerns dubbing. Pattern function and lexical meaning must remain separate.
Loan families can contain hamza
Technical أَكْسَدَ “oxidize,” أَكْسَدَة “oxidation,” and مُؤَكْسِد “oxidizing agent/oxidant” form a quadriliteral technical family that includes initial hamza. The hamza is part of the integrated stem ء-ك-س-د, not automatically the Form IV prefix of triliteral ك-س-د.

قاس المختبر معدل أكسدة العينة
qāsa l-mukhtabaru muʿaddala ʾaksadati l-ʿayyina
The laboratory measured the sample’s oxidation rate.
Native كَسَدَ “stagnate; become unsaleable” is an actual but unrelated triliteral family. Stripping hamza from أكسد because the residue happens to resemble كسد would merge two distinct lexical histories and meanings.
A wāw in a loan family need not behave like a weak root
Formal verb بَلْوَرَ means “crystallize” and, by extension, “formulate or bring into clear shape.” Its family includes بَلْوَرَة and مُبَلْوَر. The و is one stable consonant in a quadriliteral stem ب-ل-و-ر; it does not undergo the Form I hollow alternations of ق-و-ل.

عرضت اللجنة خطة مبلورة وقابلة للتنفيذ
ʿaraḍati l-lajnatu khuṭṭatan mubalwaratan waqābilatan lit-tanfīdh
The committee presented a clearly formulated, feasible plan.
Calling بلور “hollow” merely because و appears in the middle ignores the four-slot family and its stable surface forms.
Long-established learned loans can feel fully Arabic
Families such as هَنْدَسَ، هَنْدَسَة، مُهَنْدِس “engineer/engineering/engineer” and فَلْسَفَ، فَلْسَفَة “philosophize/philosophy” are deeply integrated into formal Arabic. Their foreign history does not make them grammatically marginal.

فلسف الكاتب القضية بدلا من تقديم حل عملي
falsafa l-kātibu l-qaḍiyyata badalan min taqdīmi ḥallin ʿamaliyy
The writer over-philosophized the issue instead of offering a practical solution.
The second verb is (formal, often critical in tone) when it means to over-philosophize. Current collocation and register belong in the lexical entry; historical source alone cannot supply them.
Recent loan verbs may carry register limits
Some recent technical verbs circulate widely without being equally preferred in all formal styles. فَرْمَتَ “format a disk/device,” for example, is common in (technical, informal) usage, while formal documentation may choose هَيَّأَ القرص “initialized/prepared the disk” or a more precise technical phrase. The alternatives are not always exact synonyms.
هيأ الفني القرص قبل تثبيت النظام
hayyaʾa l-faniyyu l-qurṣa qabla tathbīti n-niẓām
The technician prepared the disk before installing the system.
A corpus and current specialist dictionary are especially important for recent loans. Do not promote a regional or informal adaptation to unlabelled formal MSA merely because it fits فعلل.
Common Mistakes
Inventing a root for an opaque borrowed noun
❌ جذر إنترنت هو ن ت ر بعد حذف إن
Incorrect — إنترنت is learned as a borrowed stem; إن is not an Arabic affix here.
✅ أبحث عن إنترنت بوصفها كلمة كاملة في المعجم
ʾabḥathu ʿan ʾintarnit biwaṣfihā kalimatan kāmilatan fī l-muʿjam
I look up ʾintarnit as a complete word in the dictionary.
Forcing a quadriliteral family into three radicals
❌ جذر برمج هو ب ر ج والميم زائدة
Incorrect — م is stable in برمج، برمجة، مبرمج.
✅ أتعامل مع ب ر م ج كأسرة رباعية حديثة
ʾataʿāmalu maʿa b r m j kaʾusratin rubāʿiyyatin ḥadītha
I treat b-r-m-j as a modern quadriliteral family.
Deleting root hamza from أكسد
❌ أكسد هو صيغة رابعة عادية من ك س د
Incorrect — the technical family treats hamza as part of the integrated quadriliteral stem.
✅ تربط أكسدة ومؤكسد الهمزة بأسرة ء ك س د
tarbiṭu ʾaksadatun wamuʾaksiduni l-hamzata biʾusrati ʾ k s d
ʾAksada ‘oxidation’ and muʾaksid connect hamza with the ʾ-k-s-d family.
Treating every medial و as a hollow triliteral radical
❌ بلور يتصرف مثل قال لأن فيه واوا
Incorrect — بلور is a stable quadriliteral family, not hollow Form I.
✅ أتعلم بلور يبلور بلورة كأسرة واحدة
ʾataʿallamu balwara yubalwiru balwaratan kaʾusratin wāḥida
I learn balwara, yubalwiru, and balwara as one family.
Assuming an Arabic pattern guarantees formal acceptance
❌ كل فعل مقترض على فعلل مقبول تلقائيا في العربية المعيارية
Incorrect — pattern fit alone does not establish acceptance across contexts.
✅ أتحقق من سجل المصطلح واستعماله المتخصص
ʾataḥaqqaqu min sijilli l-muṣṭalaḥi wastiʿmālihi l-mutakhaṣṣiṣ
I check the term’s register and specialist usage.
Key Takeaways
- A borrowed noun may remain opaque, take Arabic affixes, or develop a full derivational family.
- Stable families such as فهرس، برمج, and دبلج support useful quadriliteral analysis without requiring inherited triliteral roots.
- Hamza or wāw inside an integrated stem must not be deleted merely to imitate a familiar strong or weak pattern.
- Pattern fit does not guarantee meaning, register, or acceptance; verify recent and technical vocabulary in current specialist sources.
