Weak Roots with و or ي

An Arabic root is called weak when one of its radicals is و or ي. Those consonants also function as long-vowel letters, so they can contract with neighboring vowels, alternate between forms, or disappear. قال “he said” looks as if it had only two consonants, but يقول “he says” and قول “saying” reveal root ق-و-ل.

Position matters. A first-position weak radical gives an assimilated root, a middle weak radical gives a hollow root, and a final weak radical gives a defective root. These labels predict where to inspect the paradigm; they do not provide one universal conjugation. The actual Form I vowel class and whether the radical is historically w or y remain lexical information. Use the root-and-pattern overview as a map, then confirm each verb’s dictionary forms.

The three positions

ClassWeak slotRootDiagnostic family
assimilated, مِثَالف, firstو-ع-دوَعَدَ، يَعِدُ، عِدْ، وَعْد
hollow, أَجْوَفع, secondق-و-لقَالَ، يَقُولُ، قُلْتُ، قَوْل
defective, نَاقِصل, thirdر-م-يرَمَى، يَرْمِي، لَمْ يَرْمِ، رَمْي

The table maps the root onto ف، ع، ل, but the surface word does not always display all three radicals. That is precisely why a family map is more reliable than counting letters in one form.

💡
For every new weak Form I verb, record at least four items: root, past 3rd masculine singular, imperfect 3rd masculine singular, and verbal noun. Add the first-person past and jussive when they expose a hidden radical.

Assimilated roots: weakness in the first slot

Root و-ع-د fills ف with و. The w is visible in past وَعَدَ and verbal noun وَعْد, but it drops in common Form I imperfect يَعِدُ and imperative عِدْ.

وعدت الشركة العملاء برد المبالغ خلال أسبوع

waʿadati sh-sharikatu l-ʿumalāʾa biraddi l-mabālighi khilāla ʾusbūʿ

The company promised customers a refund within a week.

يعد المدير الفريق بإعلان النتيجة غدا

yaʿidu l-mudīru l-farīqa biʾiʿlāni n-natījati ghadā

The director promises the team that the result will be announced tomorrow.

The missing و in يعد has not ceased to be part of the root. Comparison with وعدت and noun وعد restores it.

ف بوعدك إذا كنت قادرا على تنفيذه

fi biwaʿdika ʾidhā kunta qādiran ʿalā tanfīdhih

Keep your promise if you are able to fulfill it.

Imperative فِ belongs to a different initial-weak family, و-ف-ي “fulfill,” and is also final-weak. It shows why “initial و always drops” is too broad: a verb can carry more than one weakness, and the exact imperative is lexical. Initial y roots and many derived Forms also behave differently from the common وَعَدَ / يَعِدُ model.

Hollow roots: the middle radical becomes a long vowel

In root ق-و-ل, the middle و often contracts with pattern vowels. Unsuffixed past قَالَ has long ā, imperfect يَقُولُ has long ū, and verbal noun قَوْل displays consonantal w.

قال المتحدث إن المفاوضات ستستمر

qāla l-mutaḥaddithu ʾinna l-mufāwaḍāti satastamirr

The spokesperson said that negotiations would continue.

يقول المحضر إن اللجنة وافقت على التعديل

yaqūlu l-maḥḍaru ʾinna l-lajnata wāfaqat ʿalā t-taʿdīl

The minutes state that the committee approved the amendment.

Before a consonant-initial subject suffix, the long-vowel stem shortens: قُلْتُ “I said,” not qāltu.

قلت للمدير إن الموعد غير مناسب

qultu lil-mudīri ʾinna l-mawʿida ghayru munāsib

I told the director that the time was unsuitable.

Jussive لم يقل likewise has a short stem and no final long vowel:

لم يقل الشاهد شيئا عن الحادث

lam yaquli sh-shāhidu shayʾan ʿani l-ḥādith

The witness said nothing about the incident.

The connecting kasra on يقلِ الشاهد prevents an impossible consonant cluster; it is not the lost weak radical.

Substituting a second hollow root shows both the shared architecture and lexical vowel differences. Root ب-ي-ع gives بَاعَ، يَبِيعُ، بِعْتُ، بَيْع “sell/sale.”

باع المزارع محصوله مباشرة إلى المتجر

bāʿa l-muzāriʿu maḥṣūlahu mubāsharatan ʾilā l-matjar

The farmer sold his crop directly to the shop.

لم يبع المتجر الجهاز المعروض في الواجهة

lam yabiʿi l-matjaru l-jihāza l-maʿrūḍa fī l-wājiha

The shop did not sell the device displayed in the window.

Both ق-و-ل and ب-ي-ع are hollow Form I roots, but يقول/قلت and يبيع/بعت have different vowels. “Hollow” locates the instability; it does not select one paradigm.

💡
Use the verbal noun as evidence, not as a mechanically predictable form: قول reveals w and بيع reveals y, but the verbal noun itself must be learned with the verb.

Defective roots: the final radical meets mood and suffixes

In a defective root, و or ي fills the third, ل, slot. Root د-ع-و gives past دَعَا and imperfect يَدْعُو “call/invite.” Root ر-م-ي gives رَمَى / يَرْمِي “throw.” Final ا or ى in the past reflects weak-root history; it is not itself cited as the radical.

دعا المركز الخبراء إلى مناقشة النتائج

daʿā l-markazu l-khubarāʾa ʾilā munāqashati n-natāʾij

The center invited the experts to discuss the results.

لم يدع المنظمون أي متحدث إضافي

lam yadʿu l-munaẓẓimūna ʾayya mutaḥaddithin ʾiḍāfiyy

The organizers did not invite any additional speaker.

Jussive يدعُ deletes final و; the remaining u belongs to the stem and helps identify the class. With a consonant-initial past suffix, the radical reappears as و: دَعَوْتُ “I invited.”

دعوت زملائي إلى العشاء بعد المؤتمر

daʿawtu zumalāʾī ʾilā l-ʿashāʾi baʿda l-muʾtamar

I invited my colleagues to dinner after the conference.

Root ر-م-ي shows the y-class:

رمى الطفل الكرة إلى أخته في الحديقة

ramā ṭ-ṭiflu l-kurata ʾilā ʾukhtihi fī l-ḥadīqa

The child threw the ball to his sister in the park.

لم يرم اللاعب الكرة خارج الملعب

lam yarmi l-lāʿibu l-kurata khārija l-malʿab

The player did not throw the ball outside the field.

رميت الأوراق القديمة بعد تصويرها

ramaytu l-ʾawrāqa l-qadīmata baʿda taṣwīrihā

I threw away the old papers after photographing them.

Here jussive يرمِ loses written ي, whereas past رميت restores it. Root س-ع-ي gives سعى، يسعى، لم يسعَ، سعيت with its own surface pattern. Do not infer the underlying radical from final ى alone; use the family and dictionary.

سعى الفريق إلى حل المشكلة قبل الموعد

saʿā l-farīqu ʾilā ḥalli l-mushkilati qabla l-mawʿid

The team worked to solve the problem before the deadline.

Pattern stability varies across derived forms

An added consonantal pattern can preserve, move, or reshape a weak radical differently from Form I. Root ق-و-م gives Form I قَامَ “stand,” Form II قَوَّمَ “correct/straighten/evaluate,” and Form IV أَقَامَ “establish, hold, or reside according to context.” The meanings are attested lexical developments, not automatic equations “doubling = X” or “Form IV = Y.”

قوم المحرر النص ثم أقام المركز ورشة تدريبية

qawwama l-muḥarriru n-naṣṣa thumma ʾaqāma l-markazu warshatan tadrībiyya

The editor corrected the text, and then the center held a training workshop.

A dictionary still has to establish each verb’s valency and sense. The visible weak radical in قوّم and the long vowel of أقام belong to different patterns within an attested family.

Hamza is not a weak letter. A root containing ء has orthographic seat alternations, treated separately on hamzated roots.

Common Mistakes

Extracting only the visible consonants from قال

❌ بحثت عن قال تحت الجذر ق ل

Incorrect — يقول and قول reveal middle radical و, so qāla belongs under ق-و-ل.

✅ تظهر المقارنة بين قال ويقول وقول أن الواو هي الحرف الأصلي الأوسط

tuẓhiru l-muqāranatu bayna qāla wayaqūlu waqawlin ʾanna l-wāwa hiya l-ḥarfu l-ʾaṣliyyu l-ʾawsaṭ

Comparing qāla, yaqūlu, and qawl shows that wāw is the middle root consonant.

Keeping an assimilated و where the attested imperfect drops it

❌ يوعد المدير بإرسال الرد غدا

Incorrect for Form I وَعَدَ—the attested imperfect is يَعِدُ, without و.

✅ يعد المدير بإرسال الرد غدا

yaʿidu l-mudīru biʾirsāli r-raddi ghadā

The director promises to send the reply tomorrow.

Retaining a hollow long vowel before a consonant suffix

❌ قالت للمدير وأنا المتكلم

Incorrect for ‘I said’—the first-person form is قُلْتُ, not qāltu.

✅ قلت للمدير إنني سأعود غدا

qultu lil-mudīri ʾinnanī saʾaʿūdu ghadā

I told the director that I would return tomorrow.

Keeping the final weak letter in the jussive

❌ لم يرمي اللاعب الكرة

Incorrect — jussive final-weak يَرْمِ loses final ي.

✅ لم يرم اللاعب الكرة بعيدا

lam yarmi l-lāʿibu l-kurata baʿīdā

The player did not throw the ball far.

Assuming all hollow roots use the same vowels

❌ قلت وبعت لهما القالب الصوتي نفسه

Incorrect analysis—قُلْتُ has u, while بِعْتُ has i.

✅ أحفظ قال يقول قلت وباع يبيع بعت

ʾaḥfaẓu qāla yaqūlu qultu wabāʿa yabīʿu biʿtu

I learn qāla–yaqūlu–qultu and bāʿa–yabīʿu–biʿtu.

Key Takeaways

  • Assimilated, hollow, and defective identify weak radicals in the first, second, and third slots.
  • Compare past, imperfect, suffixed past, jussive, and verbal noun to recover و or ي.
  • Shared weak position does not guarantee shared vowels or meaning; Form I classes remain lexical.
  • Use roots to navigate attested families, not to manufacture every Form or erase meaning drift.
