A hamzated root contains ء as one of its radicals. In أكل “eat,” hamza is first; in سأل “ask,” it is second; in قرأ “read,” it is third. The radical itself is the glottal stop ء, not its carrier. It may be written on alif, wāw, or yāʾ—أ، ؤ، ئ—or on the line as ء according to Arabic orthography.
This distinction solves two common problems. First, a changing seat does not mean the root has changed. Second, not every initial alif belongs to the root: استعمل “use” begins with a Form X prefix and hamzat al-waṣl, while root-initial أكل contains pronounced hamzat al-qaṭʿ. Use a lexical family and a dictionary, not the seat alone. For the broader slot system, see the root-and-pattern overview.
Hamza can occupy any radical slot
| Position | Root | Family evidence | Template slot |
|---|---|---|---|
| initial | ء-ك-ل | أَكَلَ، يَأْكُلُ، مَأْكُول، آكِل | ف |
| medial | س-ء-ل | سَأَلَ، يَسْأَلُ، سُؤَال، مَسْأَلَة | ع |
| final | ق-ر-ء | قَرَأَ، يَقْرَأُ، قِرَاءَة، قَارِئ | ل |
أكل الضيوف وجبة خفيفة قبل الاجتماع
ʾakala ḍ-ḍuyūfu wajbatan khafīfatan qabla l-ijtimāʿ
The guests ate a light meal before the meeting.
سأل الصحفي الوزير عن موعد الإعلان
saʾala ṣ-ṣaḥafiyyu l-wazīra ʿan mawʿidi l-ʾiʿlān
The journalist asked the minister about the announcement date.
قرأ المحامي العقد قبل أن يوقعه
qaraʾa l-muḥāmī l-ʿaqda qabla ʾan yuwaqqiʿah
The lawyer read the contract before signing it.
In every sentence hamza is a full consonant and is romanized ʾ. English may insert a glottal stop casually between vowels, but Arabic hamza distinguishes lexical forms and must not be treated as optional.
Root-initial hamza versus an added initial alif
Root ء-ك-ل retains hamza across أَكَلَ and يَأْكُلُ. Passive participle مَأْكُول shows it medially on alif; active participle آكِل combines root hamza with the pattern’s following long ā in madda spelling.
يقدم المطعم مأكولات بحرية طازجة كل مساء
yuqaddimu l-maṭʿamu maʾkūlātin baḥriyyatan ṭāzajatan kulla masāʾ
The restaurant serves fresh seafood every evening.
Plural مأكولات is an established word for foods or dishes. Its hamza remains the first radical after the added مـ.
هذا حيوان آكل للحشرات الصغيرة
hādhā ḥayawānun ʾākilun lil-ḥasharāti ṣ-ṣaghīra
This is an animal that eats small insects.
The madda آ represents hamza plus long ā here; it does not erase the first radical.
By contrast, initial alif in استعمل carries hamzat al-waṣl as part of the Form X pattern استفعل. The root is ع-م-ل.
استعمل الفني أداة أدق لقياس الضغط
istaʿmala l-faniyyu ʾadātan ʾadaqqa liqiyāsi ḍ-ḍaghṭ
The technician used a more precise tool to measure the pressure.
Removing the initial pattern sequence from استعمل is justified by its Form X family. Removing أ from أكل would delete a radical.
A medial radical changes seats across one family
Root س-ء-ل offers a compact seat map:
- سَأَلَ: hamza sits on alif;
- سُؤَال: it sits on wāw after u;
- سَائِل: it sits on yāʾ because i follows;
- مَسْأَلَة: it returns to alif in this vowel environment.
أرسل السائل سؤاله إلى قسم الدعم
ʾarsala s-sāʾilu suʾālahu ʾilā qismi d-daʿm
The questioner sent his question to the support department.
ناقشت اللجنة مسألة تمويل المشروع
nāqashati l-lajnatu masʾalata tamwīli l-mashrūʿ
The committee discussed the issue of financing the project.
The family’s semantic center concerns asking, but مسألة has lexicalized senses such as “issue,” “matter,” and a problem in mathematics. A template does not force a single English equivalent.
The general spelling hierarchy for medial hamza gives kasra priority, then ḍamma, then fatḥa, with sukūn weakest; that interaction commonly selects ئ، ؤ، أ, or a line hamza. Use the orthographic rule to spell an established form, not to infer its root or meaning.
Final hamza follows the preceding vowel
At the end of a word, the immediately preceding vowel normally selects the seat: after a, hamza appears on alif; after u, on wāw; after i, on yāʾ; after a long vowel or consonant, often on the line.
| Word | Seat clue | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| بَدَأَ | a before hamza → أ | he began |
| تَبَاطُؤ | u before hamza → ؤ | slowdown |
| قَارِئ | i before hamza → ئ | reader |
| جُزْء | sukūn before hamza → ء | part |
بدأ الاجتماع بعد تباطؤ وصول المشاركين
badaʾa l-ijtimāʿu baʿda tabāṭuʾi wuṣūli l-mushārikīn
The meeting began after participants’ arrival slowed down.
راجع القارئ الجزء الأخير من التقرير
rājaʿa l-qāriʾu l-juzʾa l-ʾakhīra mina t-taqrīr
The reader reviewed the final part of the report.
These words do not share one root; the table illustrates the spelling principle. Root identity must come from each family.
Substitute roots without losing hamza
Active-participle pattern فَاعِل gives كَاتِب from ك-ت-ب and قَارِئ from ق-ر-ء. In the second word, hamza fills the third slot and takes yāʾ as its seat.
قارن القارئ تعليق الكاتب بالنص الأصلي
qārana l-qāriʾu taʿlīqa l-kātibi bin-naṣṣi l-ʾaṣliyy
The reader compared the writer’s comment with the original text.
The substitution is formally clear because both words are attested. It does not imply that every root has a commonly used active participle or that فَاعِل always denotes a profession.
Identical spelling can hide different roots
سَائِل can mean “questioner” from س-ء-ل, but سَائِل also means “liquid” and belongs to the س-ي-ل family of flowing. The pronunciation and spelling coincide; semantic context and dictionary organization separate the roots.
طلب السائل توضيحا من موظف الاستقبال
ṭalaba s-sāʾilu tawḍīḥan min muwaẓẓafi l-istiqbāl
The questioner requested clarification from the receptionist.
تحول السائل إلى غاز عند ارتفاع الحرارة
taḥawwala s-sāʾilu ʾilā ghāzin ʿinda rtifāʿi l-ḥarāra
The liquid turned into gas when the temperature rose.
This is a strong warning against treating roots as semantic equations. Even complete surface identity need not mean one synchronic root family.
Common Mistakes
Dropping hamza because its seat changes
❌ جذر سأل هو س و ل لأن الهمزة كتبت على واو في سؤال
Incorrect — ؤ is hamza seated on wāw; the root is س-ء-ل.
✅ يجمع المعجم سأل وسؤالا ومسألة تحت س ء ل
yajmaʿu l-muʿjamu saʾala wasuʾālan wamasʾalatan taḥta s ʾ l
The dictionary groups saʾala, suʾāl, and masʾala under s-ʾ-l.
Treating every initial alif as a root radical
❌ جذر استعمل يبدأ بالهمزة
Incorrect — initial ا is part of the Form X prefix; the root is ع-م-ل.
✅ يرتبط استعمل بعمل واستعمال
yartabiṭu staʿmala biʿamalin wastiʿmāl
Istaʿmala is related to ʿamal and istiʿmāl.
Treating a hamza seat as a separate consonant
❌ قارئ ينتهي بياء ثم همزة
Incorrect — ئ is one hamza letter on a yāʾ-shaped seat, not radical ي plus radical ء.
✅ الهمزة هي الجذر الثالث في قارئ
al-hamzatu hiya l-jidhru th-thālithu fī qāriʾ
Hamza is the third radical in qāriʾ.
Assuming one spelling has one root and meaning
❌ سائل له جذر واحد في كل سياق
Incorrect — ‘questioner’ and ‘liquid’ belong to different lexical families.
✅ يحدد السياق هل السائل شخص أم مادة
yuḥaddidu s-siyāqu hali s-sāʾilu shakhsun ʾam mādda
Context determines whether sāʾil is a person or a substance.
Inventing a meaning from the pattern
❌ كل كلمة على فاعل اسم مهنة
Incorrect — فاعل is not restricted to occupations.
✅ أتحقق من معنى قارئ وآكل في الاستعمال
ʾataḥaqqaqu min maʿnā qāriʾin waʾākilin fī l-istiʿmāl
I check how qāriʾ and ʾākil are actually used.
Key Takeaways
- Hamza ء is the radical; أ، ؤ, and ئ are contextual seats.
- A family such as سأل، سؤال، مسألة preserves one root despite seat changes.
- Distinguish radical hamzat al-qaṭʿ from added hamzat al-waṣl and pattern prefixes.
- Homonyms such as سائل prove that spelling and pattern alone cannot establish root identity or meaning.
