Nisba Adjectives in ـيّ

Arabic often turns a noun into an adjective meaning “connected with, belonging to, or characteristic of” by adding ـيّ. From مصر “Egypt” comes مصريّ “Egyptian,” and from اقتصاد “economy” comes اقتصاديّ “economic.” This is the nisba adjective, one of Arabic's most productive word-building patterns.

English expresses the same relationship unpredictably: Egypt → Egyptian, culture → cultural, university → university/academic. Arabic formation is much more systematic, but the resulting word is still an adjective. It follows its noun and agrees with it in gender, number, case, and definiteness.

The basic formation

For a straightforward base, add a doubled يّ sound to the noun stem. The masculine singular ending is ـِيٌّ in a fully inflected nominative form, but it is normally written without short vowels as ـيّ and pronounced -iyy in pause. The feminine adds ـة, producing ـيّة.

Base nounMasculine nisbaFeminine nisbaMeaning
مصرمصريّمصريةEgyptian
سورياسوريّسوريةSyrian
جامعةجامعيّجامعيةuniversity / academic
اقتصاداقتصاديّاقتصاديةeconomic
ثقافةثقافيّثقافيةcultural

When the base ends in ة, that ending is removed before ـيّ: ثقافة → ثقافيّ, not ثقافتيّ. Final long vowels and some old stem shapes can also change. Common forms such as سنويّ “annual,” لغويّ “linguistic,” and يدويّ “manual/handmade” should be learned as words rather than generated by sight.

حضرت ندوة ثقافية في المكتبة.

ḥaḍartu nadwatan thaqāfiyyatan fī l-maktaba(h).

I attended a cultural seminar at the library.

تنشر الوزارة تقريرا ماليا كل شهر.

tanshuru l-wizāratu taqrīran māliyyan kulla shahr.

The ministry publishes a financial report every month.

The pattern tells you that a relationship exists; it does not guarantee one single English translation. جامعيّ can mean “university,” “academic,” or “of a university” according to context. يوميّ may mean “daily” or “day-to-day.” Context selects the English wording.

💡
Recognize ـيّ as a relationship marker, not as a translation formula. First identify the base noun, then ask what kind of connection makes sense in the sentence.

Agreement: one adjective, several endings

A nisba adjective has ordinary adjective agreement. The following four-way set shows the same nationality with a masculine singular person, a feminine singular person, a masculine human plural, and a feminine human plural.

ControllerIndefinite phraseForm
masculine singularطالب مصريّمصريّ
feminine singularطالبة مصريةمصرية
masculine human pluralطلاب مصريونمصريون

انضم طالب مصري إلى فريق البحث.

ʾinḍamma ṭālibun miṣriyyun ʾilā farīqi l-baḥth.

An Egyptian student joined the research team.

انضمت طالبة مصرية إلى فريق البحث.

ʾinḍammat ṭālibatun miṣriyyatun ʾilā farīqi l-baḥth.

An Egyptian female student joined the research team.

شارك باحثون مصريون في المؤتمر.

shāraka bāḥithūna miṣriyyūna fī l-muʾtamar.

Egyptian researchers participated in the conference.

قدمت باحثات مصريات نتائج الدراسة.

qaddamat bāḥithātun miṣriyyātun natāʾija d-dirāsa(h).

Egyptian female researchers presented the study's results.

The sound masculine plural alternates between ـيّون in the nominative and ـيّين in the accusative or genitive. The sound feminine plural has ـيّات and changes its short case ending. These endings matter in fully inflected formal speech, though speakers often use pausal forms outside careful reading.

تحدثت مع صحفيين سوريين بعد الجلسة.

taḥaddathtu maʿa ṣaḥafiyyīna sūriyyīna baʿda l-jalsa(h).

I spoke with Syrian journalists after the session.

Here صحفيين and سوريين are both in the oblique ـين form after مع. Agreement is a bundle: changing only the adjective's gender or number is not enough if its case and definiteness do not also match.

Phrase or sentence? Definiteness gives the answer

In an attributive phrase, the nisba adjective follows the noun and matches its definiteness. In a present-tense nominal sentence, an indefinite adjective can instead be the predicate.

قابلت المهندس السوري في المكتب.

qābaltu l-muhandisa s-sūriyya fī l-maktab.

I met the Syrian engineer in the office.

المهندس سوري، لكنه يعمل في عمان.

ʾal-muhandisu sūriyyun, lakinnahu yaʿmalu fī ʿammān.

The engineer is Syrian, but he works in Amman.

المهندس السوري is one definite noun phrase: “the Syrian engineer.” المهندس سوري is a complete sentence: “the engineer is Syrian.” English inserts is; present-tense Arabic normally lets definiteness and structure carry that distinction.

Human and nonhuman plurals

Human plurals take full plural agreement, as باحثون مصريون showed above. A nonhuman plural normally controls feminine singular agreement, regardless of the nisba adjective's dictionary form. The broader contrast is developed on Human Plural Agreement.

ناقشت اللجنة تقارير اقتصادية حديثة.

nāqashati l-lajnatu taqārīra qtiṣādiyyatan ḥadītha(h).

The committee discussed recent economic reports.

هذه المؤسسات الحكومية مسؤولة عن التدريب.

hādhihi l-muʾassasātu l-ḥukūmiyyatu masʾūlatun ʿani t-tadrīb.

These government institutions are responsible for training.

تقارير and مؤسسات are morphologically plural but nonhuman. Their attributive nisba adjectives are therefore feminine singular: اقتصادية and الحكومية. By contrast, الموظفون الحكوميون “the government employees” requires masculine plural agreement because the referents are people.

💡
Do not choose the adjective ending by looking only at the noun's written plural. Ask whether the referents are rational humans. Human plural: full plural agreement. Nonhuman plural: normally feminine singular.

Nationality, field, affiliation, and lexicalized meanings

Nationality is only the most visible use. Nisba adjectives classify fields (بحث علميّ “scientific research”), institutions (قرار وزاريّ “ministerial decision”), periods (اجتماع سنويّ “annual meeting”), materials or techniques (عمل يدويّ “handmade work”), and affiliations (فريق جامعيّ “university team”). Some become nouns for people: مصريّ can mean “an Egyptian,” and جامعيّ can mean “a university student” in some contexts. Such noun uses still inflect for gender and number.

اشترينا منتجات محلية مصنوعة يدويا.

ʾishtaraynā muntajātin maḥalliyyatan maṣnūʿatan yadawiyyan.

We bought local products made by hand.

When several adjectives follow a noun, each agrees, but their scope can differ. An iḍāfa makes the diagnostic especially visible:

أعلنت سياسة البنك الدولية هذا الأسبوع.

ʾuʿlinat siyāsatu l-banki d-dawliyyatu hādhā l-ʾusbūʿ.

The bank's international policy was announced this week.

Here feminine nominative الدولية agrees with سياسة, not masculine genitive البنك. In سياسة البنك الدولي, by contrast, masculine genitive الدولي identifies “the World Bank / the international bank.” Agreement therefore tells you not just form but syntactic attachment.

Common Mistakes

Putting the adjective before the noun

❌ الاقتصادي التقرير وصل إلى المكتب اليوم.

Incorrect — an ordinary attributive nisba adjective follows its noun.

✅ وصل التقرير الاقتصادي إلى المكتب اليوم.

waṣala t-taqrīru l-iqtiṣādiyyu ʾilā l-maktabi l-yawm.

The economic report reached the office today.

Omitting definiteness agreement

❌ قرأت التقرير اقتصادي الجديد.

Incorrect — both attributive adjectives must match the definite noun.

✅ قرأت التقرير الاقتصادي الجديد.

qaraʾtu t-taqrīra l-iqtiṣādiyya l-jadīd.

I read the new economic report.

Giving a nonhuman plural human plural agreement

❌ التقارير الاقتصاديون جاهزون.

Incorrect — nonhuman plural تقارير controls feminine-singular agreement.

✅ التقارير الاقتصادية جاهزة.

ʾat-taqārīru l-iqtiṣādiyyatu jāhiza(h).

The economic reports are ready.

Guessing gender from the English meaning

❌ الجامعة حكومي.

Incorrect — جامعة is grammatically feminine, regardless of the gender-neutral English word “university.”

✅ الجامعة حكومية.

ʾal-jāmiʿatu ḥukūmiyya(h).

The university is public.

Key Takeaways

  • ـيّ builds an adjective of relationship; feminine ـيّة and plural endings follow ordinary agreement.
  • The exact English translation depends on context: nationality, field, affiliation, time, or classification.
  • Attributive nisba adjectives follow the noun and match its definiteness and case.
  • Human plurals take full plural agreement; nonhuman plurals normally take feminine-singular agreement.
  • In iḍāfa chains, agreement can reveal which noun the nisba adjective modifies.
