Several basic Arabic colors belong to a distinctive adjective family: masculine أفعل, feminine فعلاء, and often a broken plural فعل. Thus أحمر “red” pairs with حمراء, not with the regular-looking form أحمرة. The same historical family includes certain physical characteristics such as أصمّ/صمّاء “deaf” and أعرج/عرجاء “having a limp.” “Physical defect” in the traditional name of this grammar class is a historical label, not a recommendation for describing people.
The masculine pattern looks exactly like the common elative pattern used for “bigger” or “better,” but a color such as أحمر is not automatically a comparative. Its feminine and plural forms, its case behavior, and the way Arabic says “redder” all need to be learned as part of this special system.
The core color pairs
| Masculine singular | Feminine singular | Common broken plural | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| أحمر | حمراء | حمر | red |
| أبيض | بيضاء | بيض | white |
| أسود | سوداء | سود | black |
| أخضر | خضراء | خضر | green |
| أزرق | زرقاء | زرق | blue |
| أصفر | صفراء | صفر | yellow |
The feminine does not add ordinary ـة. Instead, the initial أ disappears and the ending ـاء appears: أخضر → خضراء. The broken plural usually compresses the word to فُعْل: fully vocalized خُضْر and سُود. These plurals occur when plural agreement is semantically appropriate, especially with people or when the color word is used substantivally. They are not the default modifier of an ordinary nonhuman plural.
وضعت الملف الأزرق على مكتبك.
waḍaʿtu l-milaffa l-ʾazraqa ʿalā maktabik.
I put the blue file on your desk.
اشتريت حقيبة زرقاء للسفر.
ʾishtaraytu ḥaqībatan zarqāʾa li-s-safar.
I bought a blue bag for the trip.
نحتاج إلى طلاء أبيض للمطبخ.
naḥtāju ʾilā ṭilāʾin ʾabyaḍa li-l-maṭbakh.
We need white paint for the kitchen.
In the last example, أبيضَ has fatḥa after an indefinite genitive noun. Masculine أفعل color adjectives and feminine فعلاء forms are diptotes: when indefinite, they normally have no tanwīn and use fatḥa for both accusative and genitive. Once definite with الـ, the genitive shows kasra normally: بالقميص الأبيضِ.
The four-way agreement set with people
The same pattern historically covers certain physical states or differences. A clear four-way agreement set is أصمّ/صمّاء/صمّ. In respectful contemporary usage, describe disability only when it is relevant, and prefer the terminology used by the people or institution concerned. أشخاص صمّ “Deaf people” is normal formal MSA; disability should not be used as a metaphor for unwillingness to listen.
| Referent | Phrase | Agreement |
|---|---|---|
| masculine singular | طالب أصمّ | masculine singular |
| feminine singular | طالبة صمّاء | feminine singular |
| masculine human plural | طلاب صمّ | broken plural |
| feminine human plural | طالبات صمّ | broken plural shared by both genders |
يوفر المركز مترجمين للطلاب الصم.
yuwaffiru l-markazu mutarjimīna li-ṭ-ṭullābi ṣ-ṣumm.
The center provides interpreters for Deaf students.
شاركت طالبة صماء في إعداد الدليل.
shārakat ṭālibatun ṣammāʾu fī ʾiʿdādi d-dalīl.
A Deaf female student took part in preparing the guide.
Other members include أعمى/عمياء “blind” and أعرج/عرجاء “having a limp.” Their plurals are lexical and may have alternatives, so learn them from a reliable dictionary with the singular pair. The color table is productive as a family; it is not permission to guess every human adjective's plural.
Phrase versus sentence
Like other attributive adjectives, a color follows its noun and matches definiteness. A definite subject followed by an indefinite color is instead a nominal sentence with a predicate.
اخترت القميص الأحمر للاجتماع.
ʾikhtartu l-qamīṣa l-ʾaḥmara li-l-ijtimāʿ.
I chose the red shirt for the meeting.
القميص أحمر، وربطة العنق زرقاء.
al-qamīṣu ʾaḥmaru, wa-rabṭatu l-ʿunuqi zarqāʾ.
The shirt is red, and the tie is blue.
القميص الأحمر is the phrase “the red shirt”; القميص أحمر asserts “the shirt is red.” English relies on is, while Arabic makes the article pattern do much of the structural work. See Definiteness Agreement for the general diagnostic.
Human and nonhuman plurals
A rational human plural can use the lexical broken plural of an أفعل/فعلاء adjective, as الطلاب الصمّ does. An ordinary non-rational plural—normally nonhuman—takes feminine-singular agreement, although explicit personification can license rational agreement.
رفعت البلدية الأعلام الحمراء فوق المبنى.
rafaʿati l-baladiyyatu l-ʾaʿlāma l-ḥamrāʾa fawqa l-mabnā.
The municipality raised the red flags above the building.
الأوراق الصفراء تسقط في الخريف.
al-ʾawrāqu ṣ-ṣafrāʾu tasquṭu fī l-kharīf.
The yellow leaves fall in autumn.
Do not replace الحمراء with plural الحمر in the neutral first example merely because الأعلام is plural. Flags are nonhuman, so the modifier is feminine singular. With a group of human beings, the plural form can be required.
Position, scope, and adjective stacks
Colors follow the noun, and every adjective in a stack carries its own agreement. A classifying adjective often sits closer to the noun, while the color or a more descriptive property follows, though discourse can change the order.
اشترينا سيارة كهربائية زرقاء صغيرة.
ʾishtaraynā sayyāratan kahrabāʾiyyatan zarqāʾa ṣaghīra(h).
We bought a small blue electric car.
An iḍāfa can make attachment visible. حقيبة الطالب الحمراء has feminine الحمراء, so it describes حقيبة “bag”; حقيبة الطالب الأصمّ has masculine genitive الأصمّ, so it describes الطالب “student.” No adjective may be inserted between the two nouns of the iḍāfa.
Why “redder” needs another construction
Ordinary elatives also use masculine أفعل, but basic color and physical-defect adjectives are excluded from direct productive comparison on that same form. أحمر already means “red,” not “redder.” Formal MSA normally uses أشدّ/أكثر + verbal noun or specification.
هذا القماش أشد حمرة من ذاك.
hādhā l-qumāshu ʾashaddu ḥumratan min dhāk.
This fabric is redder than that one.
صار الجدار أكثر بياضا بعد التنظيف.
ṣāra l-jidāru ʾakthara bayāḍan baʿda t-tanẓīf.
The wall became whiter after cleaning.
This is not merely stylistic avoidance: it prevents the lexical color أحمر from being misread as a regularly derived elative. The neighboring Elative Introduction explains comparison more fully.
Common Mistakes
Putting the color before the noun
❌ أحمر ملف وصل صباحا.
Incorrect — an ordinary attributive color follows its noun.
✅ وصل ملف أحمر صباحا.
waṣala milaffun ʾaḥmaru ṣabāḥā.
A red file arrived this morning.
Forgetting definiteness agreement
❌ وضعت الكتاب أحمر على الرف.
Incorrect for “the red book” — the attributive adjective must also be definite.
✅ وضعت الكتاب الأحمر على الرف.
waḍaʿtu l-kitāba l-ʾaḥmara ʿalā r-raff.
I put the red book on the shelf.
Using plural agreement with nonhuman nouns
❌ السيارات الحمر سريعة.
Incorrect in neutral MSA — nonhuman plural سيارات takes feminine-singular حمراء.
✅ السيارات الحمراء سريعة.
as-sayyārātu l-ḥamrāʾu sarīʿa(h).
The red cars are fast.
Building the feminine from English expectations
❌ الحقيبة أحمرة.
Incorrect — the feminine of أحمر is the irregular pattern حمراء, not أحمرة.
✅ الحقيبة حمراء.
al-ḥaqībatu ḥamrāʾ.
The bag is red.
Treating a color as an elative
❌ هذا الطلاء أحمر من السابق.
Incorrect for “redder than” — أحمر is the basic color adjective, not a comparative here.
✅ هذا الطلاء أشد حمرة من السابق.
hādhā ṭ-ṭilāʾu ʾashaddu ḥumratan mina s-sābiq.
This paint is redder than the previous one.
Key Takeaways
- Basic colors commonly pair masculine أفعل with feminine فعلاء and broken plural فعل.
- These singular forms are diptotes when indefinite.
- Human plurals can use lexical plural forms; nonhuman plurals normally take feminine-singular agreement.
- Attributive colors follow the noun and match definiteness; an indefinite color after a definite subject is usually a predicate.
- To compare degrees of color or physical characteristic, use أشدّ/أكثر plus an appropriate noun rather than treating the basic color as an elative.
