Back-formation creates a new, apparently simpler form by removing or reinterpreting material in an existing word. Reanalysis is broader: speakers assign a new internal structure to a word, and that structure supports further morphology. Contemporary Arabic often shows these processes when a loan noun is shortened into a quadriliteral verb, as in تلفزيون → تلفز “television → televise.”
The terminology needs caution. Arabic grammarians may describe the same result as اشتقاق من اسم “derivation from a noun,” نحت “coining by compression,” or integration into فعلل. Historical direction is not always recoverable from the modern forms alone. This page therefore uses clear back-formation only when a longer attested base visibly precedes a shorter one, and synchronic reanalysis when current speakers can organize a family without a secure claim about which member came first.

A loan can become a usable Arabic stem
The borrowed noun تلفزيون is masculine; the common plural is تلفزيونات, and the nisba adjective is تلفزيوني. The shorter verb تلفز fits the quadriliteral pattern فعلل, with verbal noun تلفزة and passive participle متلفز. Arabic morphology has not discovered an ancient root inside the foreign word. It has built a new contemporary family from selected consonants.
تلفزت القناة جلسة الافتتاح مساء أمس.
talfazati l-qanātu jalsata l-iftitāḥi masāʾa ʾams.
The channel televised the opening session yesterday evening. (formal/media)
أعادت الشبكة بث النقاش المتلفز بعد نشرة الأخبار.
ʾaʿādati sh-shabakatu baththa n-niqāshi l-mutalfazi baʿda nashrati l-ʾakhbār.
The network rebroadcast the televised discussion after the news bulletin. (formal/media)
أعدت المؤسسة سلسلة من البرامج التلفزيونية القصيرة.
ʾaʿaddati l-muʾassasatu silsilatan mina l-barāmiji t-tilifizyūniyyati l-qaṣīra(h).
The organization produced a series of short television programs. (neutral formal)
The family contains two histories at once: تلفزيون remains recognizably borrowed, while تلفز، تلفزة، متلفز behave as Arabic quadriliteral forms. That is reanalysis, not evidence that every consonant in the noun is a radical.
تلفون → تلفن: a compact verbal base
The academy-recorded verb تلفن means to conduct a conversation by telephone. Its relation to تلفون is especially clear: the long vowel and final material of the noun are reduced, leaving four consonants that fit فعلل. The result is lexicalized but not equally common in every region or register; اتصل هاتفيا is a transparent cross-regional alternative (formal).
تلفن الموظف لتأكيد الموعد ثم سجل خلاصة المكالمة.
talfana l-muwaẓẓafu li-taʾkīdi l-mawʿidi thumma sajjala khulāṣata l-mukālama(h).
The employee telephoned to confirm the appointment, then recorded a summary of the call. (recognized modern formation; distribution varies)
اتصلت الموظفة بالعميلة هاتفيا لتأكيد الحجز.
ittaṣalati l-muwaẓẓafatu bi-l-ʿamīlati hātifiyyan li-taʾkīdi l-ḥajz.
The employee called the client to confirm the reservation. (widely transparent formal alternative)
Reanalysis is not always back-formation
Several modern quadriliteral families resemble the examples above without having the same history.
| Modern family | Structure | Responsible label |
|---|---|---|
| تلفزيون، تلفز، تلفزة | longer loan noun beside shorter quadriliteral verb | clear loan-based shortening/reanalysis |
| تلفون، تلفن | loan noun beside compact quadriliteral verb | loan-based shortening/reanalysis |
| حاسوب، حوسب، حوسبة | native root ح-س-ب reorganized into a modern quadriliteral series | modern analogical reanalysis, not a foreign-root extraction |
| برنامج، برمج، برمجة، مبرمج | borrowed noun supports a highly established quadriliteral family | integrated denominal derivation; historical direction should be sourced |
| فهرس، فهرس، فهرسة، مفهرس | noun and quadriliteral verb share the same consonantal base | denominal quadriliteral derivation, not necessarily back-formation |
حوسب “computerize/process by computer” and حوسبة “computing/computerization” are firmly integrated into formal technical vocabulary. The family remains connected to inherited ح-س-ب “calculate,” but its surface sequence ح-و-س-ب follows the modern noun حاسوب closely.
حوسبت الجامعة سجلاتها القديمة على مراحل.
ḥawsabati l-jāmiʿatu sijillātihā l-qadīmata ʿalā marāḥil.
The university computerized its old records in stages. (formal/technical)
تتطلب حوسبة السجلات مراجعة البيانات قبل نقلها.
tataṭallabu ḥawsabatu s-sijillāti murājaʿata l-bayānāti qabla naqlihā.
Computerizing the records requires reviewing the data before transferring it. (formal/technical)
For برنامج, the established broken plural is برامج, while برمجة is feminine and normally has sound plural برمجات only when separate programming operations or programmatic items genuinely need counting; often it is a mass/process noun and remains singular.
برمج الفريق الأداة لاكتشاف السجلات المكررة.
barmaja l-farīqu l-ʾadāta li-ktishāfi s-sijillāti l-mukarrara(h).
The team programmed the tool to detect duplicate records. (technical)
فهرست المكتبة الرسائل الجامعية بحسب الموضوع.
fahrasati l-maktabatu r-rasāʾila l-jāmiʿiyyata bi-ḥasabi l-mawḍūʿ.
The library catalogued the theses by subject. (formal/library terminology)
Folk segmentation is not evidence
A learner can always divide a word visually, but a plausible division is not necessarily morphology. إنترنت does not contain Arabic conditional إن plus a base ترنت. برنامج does not contain preposition بـ plus a noun رنامج. أرشيف “archive” begins with a pronounced hamza, but that does not automatically make it a Form-IV verb or place it in inherited root ر-ش-ف.
Such analyses are folk etymologies unless supported by the word's history and contemporary family. They may be memorable, but they predict the wrong plurals, meanings, and relatives.
بحثت الباحثة في الأرشيف الرقمي ولم تفترض له جذرا قديما.
baḥathati l-bāḥithatu fī l-ʾarshīfi r-raqmiyyi wa-lam taftariḍ lahu jidhran qadīman.
The researcher searched the digital archive without assuming an ancient root for the loanword. (formal/academic)
A verification workflow
When a new family appears, verify it in this order:
- Find the headword and principal forms in an authoritative contemporary dictionary.
- Check whether the alleged base, verb, verbal noun, participles, gender, and plural are all actually attested.
- Compare dates before claiming that one member was historically derived “backward” from another.
- Check real specialist and public texts for valency and register.
- Write original examples; do not copy dictionary or corpus sentences.
If the evidence proves only a modern association, say synchronic family. That is a useful linguistic fact and does not need an invented historical story.
Common Mistakes
Treating a loan family as an inherited root
❌ ت ل ف ز جذر عربي قديم لأنه يظهر في تلفز.
Incorrect — contemporary تلفز is a loan-based quadriliteral formation, not proof of an inherited root.
✅ تلفز فعل حديث مشتق من مادة التلفزيون.
talfaza fiʿlun ḥadīthun mushtaqqun min māddati t-tilifizyūn.
Talfaza is a modern verb derived from television vocabulary.
Calling every denominal verb a back-formation
❌ كل فعل رباعي مشتق من اسم هو اشتقاق عكسي.
Incorrect — many are ordinary denominal or analogical formations; historical direction must be demonstrated.
✅ أصف «برمج» بأنه فعل في أسرة رباعية حديثة، وأتحقق من تاريخ الأسرة قبل تسمية العملية.
ʾaṣifu ‘barmaja’ bi-ʾannahu fiʿlun fī ʾusratin rubāʿiyyatin ḥadīthatin, wa-ʾataḥaqqu min tārīkhi l-ʾusrati qabla tasmiyati l-ʿamaliyya(h).
I describe barmaja as a verb in a modern quadriliteral family and verify the family's history before naming the process.
Regularizing a loan plural blindly
❌ قرأت برنامجات الحاسوب الجديدة.
Incorrect in ordinary standard usage — برنامج has the established broken plural برامج.
✅ قارنت برامج الحاسوب الجديدة قبل الشراء.
qārantu barāmija l-ḥāsūbi l-jadīdata qabla sh-shirāʾ.
I compared the new computer programs before buying.
Replacing evidence with a purist guess
❌ رفض المحرر تلفزيون واخترع بديلا لم يستعمله أهل المجال.
Poor method — rejecting a loan does not establish an unattested replacement.
✅ اختار المحرر المصطلح الموثق وذكر البديل المعروف عند الحاجة.
ikhtāra l-muḥarriru l-muṣṭalaḥa l-muwaththaqa wa-dhakara l-badīla l-maʿrūfa ʿinda l-ḥāja(h).
The editor chose the documented term and mentioned the known alternative when needed.
Key Takeaways
- Use back-formation narrowly and reanalysis when historical direction is uncertain.
- A borrowed base can support fully Arabic verbal nouns, participles, agreement, and syntax.
- Compare the entire attested family before assigning a root or pattern.
- Keep lexicalized plurals such as برامج instead of predicting them from foreign origin.
- Treat historical etymology, synchronic morphology, and editorial preference as three separate questions.
