Arabic does not merely copy a foreign word. التعريب at-taʿrīb “Arabicization” can adapt its sounds, represent those sounds in Arabic script, and give the result Arabic grammatical behavior. These are three separate decisions. فيلم “film,” for example, has an Arabic pronunciation and spelling, takes the broken plural أفلام, and enters phrases like فيلم وثائقي with ordinary masculine agreement.
Arabicization is only one way the modern lexicon grows. Arabic can also extend an inherited word, translate a foreign expression element by element, or deliberately derive a new term from an Arabic root. The fact that one option looks morphologically transparent does not guarantee that writers actually use it; attestation and audience matter.
Three layers of adaptation
The three layers often occur together, but keeping them distinct prevents false rules.
| Layer | Question | Illustration | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| phonological | How are unavailable foreign sounds approximated? | foreign /p/ commonly becomes ب in بترول | productive tendency, with lexical exceptions |
| orthographic | Which Arabic letters represent the adapted pronunciation? | فيديو uses ي and و to stabilize long vowels | conventional but variable in new names |
| morphological | What gender, plural, and derivatives does the word take? | فيلم → أفلام; برنامج → برامج | largely lexical and must be verified |
Arabic has no native /p/–/b/ or /v/–/f/ contrast, so established loans commonly use ب and ف. It also has no single pan-Arab letter for foreign hard /g/. A name or new term may therefore have competing spellings, while a long-established word has a conventional form that should be learned intact.

ʾarsala l-muṣawwiru l-fīdyū ʾilā l-muḥarrirati qabla ẓ-ẓuhr.

The vowel letters in فيديو are part of its established Arabic spelling; they are not a letter-for-letter transliteration of English. For detailed spelling choices in names and very recent loans, see Spelling Modern Loanwords and Names.
Gender comes from Arabic usage
A borrowed noun must participate in agreement, but its source-language gender does not control Arabic. A final ة strongly favors feminine behavior in words such as ديمقراطية “democracy.” Other loans acquire conventional gender through usage. فيلم، راديو، كمبيوتر are normally masculine in formal MSA, while a borrowed proper name can trigger agreement from the understood head: شركة مايكروسوفت أعلنت is feminine because the referent is شركة.
أصبح الراديو الرقمي أكثر انتشارا في السيارات الجديدة.
ʾaṣbaḥa r-rādyū r-raqmiyyu ʾakthara intishāran fī s-sayyārāti l-jadīda(h).
Digital radio has become more widespread in new cars.

tarassakhati d-dīmuqrāṭiyyatu ʿabra muʾassasātin mustaqillatin wa-ntikhābātin dawriyya(h).
Democracy became established through independent institutions and periodic elections.
English lets many inanimate loan nouns remain grammatically ungendered. Arabic cannot: adjectives, pronouns, demonstratives, and sometimes verbs require an agreement choice. Learn the gender with the noun, especially when no visible suffix settles it.
Plurals are evidence, not arithmetic
Loanwords may take a sound plural, a broken plural, remain unchanged after a counted head noun, or compete between forms. Their foreign origin does not create a universal plural suffix.
| Singular | Attested plural | Analysis | Register |
|---|---|---|---|
| فيلم | أفلام | integrated broken plural | neutral MSA |
| بنك | بنوك | integrated broken plural | neutral MSA |
| برنامج | برامج | integrated broken plural | neutral MSA |
| رادار | رادارات | sound feminine plural attached to a lexicalized loan | technical/formal |

ثبت الفنيون رادارات جديدة على الساحل.
thabbata l-fanniyyūna rādārātin jadīdatan ʿalā s-sāḥil.
The technicians installed new radars on the coast.
The sound plural ـات is productive enough to attract many modern inanimate terms, but it is not a repair strategy to apply whenever you do not know a plural. Established بنوك، أفلام، برامج must not be replaced by invented regular forms.
A borrowed base can become an Arabic family
Once a loan is established, Arabic may build derivatives around it. برنامج “program” has the broken plural برامج, the quadriliteral verb برمج “to program,” the verbal noun برمجة, the profession noun مبرمج, and the collective technical noun برمجيات “software.” The family behaves morphologically like Arabic even though برنامج entered Arabic historically from outside the inherited root stock.

rājaʿa l-mubarmiju barāmiji sh-sharikati qabla taḥdīthi l-barmajiyyāt.
The programmer reviewed the company’s programs before updating the software.
This is a lexicalized family: speakers can extend it, but its existence does not prove that every new foreign noun can immediately be treated as a root. The Making Verbs from Loans page follows this process in detail.
Borrowing competes with calque and planned derivation
Modern texts often have several legitimate resources for one concept:
- كمبيوتر is a direct adapted borrowing.
- حاسوب is a planned derivative from حسب “calculate,” now established in formal technical use.
- حاسب آلي is a descriptive term built from inherited material.
- هاتف ذكي is a calque-like phrase whose Arabic parts transparently express “smart phone.”
اشترى المختبر حاسوبا جديدا لمعالجة الصور.
ishtarā l-mukhtabaru ḥāsūban jadīdan li-muʿālajati ṣ-ṣuwar.
The laboratory bought a new computer for image processing.
يفضل بعض المستخدمين كلمة كمبيوتر في الحديث اليومي.
yufaḍḍilu baʿḍu l-mustakhdimīna kalimata kumbyūtar fī l-ḥadīthi l-yawmiyy.
Some users prefer the word ‘computer’ in everyday speech.
Neither etymology alone nor an academy’s proposal decides every genre. حاسوب is particularly natural in educational, institutional, and technical writing (formal/academic); كمبيوتر is also widely understood and attested, including in edited prose. A style guide should choose consistently for its audience rather than declaring one word “real Arabic” and the other nonexistent.
Common Mistakes
1. Inventing an inherited root for every loan
❌ اشتق كمبيوتر من جذر عربي هو ك م ب.
Incorrect — كمبيوتر is an adapted borrowing, not an inherited triliteral root family.
✅ أتعامل مع كمبيوتر بوصفه اسما دخيلا مستقرا.
ʾataʿāmalu maʿa kumbyūtar bi-waṣfihi sman dakhīlan mustaqirran.
I treat كمبيوتر as an established loan noun.
2. Regularizing every plural with ـات
❌ أغلقت ثلاثة بنكات أبوابها مبكرا.
Incorrect in formal MSA — the established plural of بنك is بنوك.
✅ أغلقت ثلاثة بنوك أبوابها مبكرا.
ʾaghlaqat thalāthatu bunūkin ʾabwābahā mubakkiran.
Three banks closed their doors early.
3. Assuming an Arabic-looking coinage is automatically accepted
❌ نشرت المصطلح الذي اخترعته لأن وزنه صحيح.
Bad terminology practice — a possible pattern does not establish a word’s meaning or acceptance.
✅ تحققت اللجنة من المصطلح في المعجم ومدونة التخصص.
taḥaqqaqati l-lajnatu mina l-muṣṭalaḥi fī l-muʿjami wa-mudawwanati t-takhaṣṣuṣ.
The committee verified the term in the dictionary and the field’s corpus.
4. Replacing an attested term with opaque purism
❌ رفض المحرر كلمة ليزر واستبدل بها وصفا طويلا غامضا.
Poor editing — ليزر is an established technical loan, while the replacement obscures the referent.
✅ يقيس الجهاز المسافة بشعاع ليزر.
yaqīsu l-jihāzu l-masāfata bi-shuʿāʿi līzar.
The device measures distance with a laser beam.
Key Takeaways
- Phonological, orthographic, and morphological Arabicization are related but separate.
- Learn a loan’s gender and attested plural; foreign origin does not imply one plural rule.
- A lexicalized loan can support a large Arabic derivational family without becoming an inherited triliteral root.
- Borrowing, calquing, semantic extension, and planned derivation coexist in contemporary MSA.
- Prefer documented, audience-appropriate usage over automatic purism or automatic borrowing.
