Spelling Modern Loanwords and Names

Modern Standard Arabic constantly absorbs personal names, place names, brand names, and technical vocabulary. It normally writes them with the ordinary Arabic alphabet, choosing letters for the source pronunciation, not mechanically replacing one Latin letter at a time. Thus English c becomes ك in كندا Kanadā but س in سينما sīnamā because the two c’s represent different sounds.

There is no single international authority that fixes every new Arabic transcription. News agencies, governments, publishers, and trademark owners can choose differently, especially for sounds that MSA’s twenty-eight-letter inventory lacks. A good writer therefore balances pronunciation, an established Arabic form, and consistency within the document.

From sound to Arabic letter

Start with the name as pronounced in its source language. English spelling is a particularly unreliable guide: ph may represent /f/, ch may represent several sounds, and silent letters should not acquire Arabic consonants merely because they appear on the page.

Foreign sound or sequenceCommon MSA choiceInitial exampleMedial/final exampleImportant limitation
/k/ككنداباكستانDo not copy English c mechanically
/s/سسينمافرنساEnglish c can correspond to this sound too
/f/ففلسفةهاتفAlso common for foreign /v/
/tʃ/تش, sometimes established شتشادمانشسترConventions depend on the established name
/ʒ/ or /dʒ/ج commonlyجنيفنيجيرياMSA normally realizes ج as j; regional readings vary
long /aː iː uː/ا، ي، وباريس، فيزاراديوActual vowel quality may be approximated

These mappings are tendencies, not equations. جنيف is the established Arabic spelling of Geneva, while واشنطن is established for Washington even though its segment-by-segment relationship to English spelling is not simple.

وصلت الطائرة إلى باريس مساء أمس.

waṣalati ṭ-ṭāʾiratu ʾilā Bārīsa masāʾa ʾams.

The plane arrived in Paris yesterday evening.

يعمل يوسف في شركة دولية في جنيف.

yaʿmalu Yūsufu fī sharikatin dawliyyatin fī Jinīf.

Yusuf works for an international company in Geneva.

💡
For a new personal name, ask how its owner pronounces it. For a famous city, institution, or historical figure, first check whether Arabic already has an established form. Transliteration is not an invitation to erase convention.

Writing vowels that Arabic does not distinguish exactly

Arabic has three short-vowel qualities and three corresponding long vowels. Many source languages distinguish more. Writers therefore approximate foreign vowels with فتحة، كسرة، ضمة in fully vocalized material and with ا، ي، و when a long vowel letter is needed in ordinary spelling.

Common loans illustrate different strategies:

Arabic spellingReadingSourceWhat the vowel letters do
راديوrādyūradioا marks ā; final و marks ū
فيديوfīdyūvideoي marks ī; final و marks ū
كمبيوترkumbyūtarcomputerيو represents the adapted yū sequence
ديمقراطيةdīmuqrāṭiyyademocracyي and ا stabilize long vowels in the Arabic form

حدثت الشركة برنامج الكمبيوتر صباح اليوم.

ḥaddathati sh-sharikatu barnāmaja l-kumbyūtar ṣabāḥa l-yawm.

The company updated the computer program this morning.

شاهدنا فيلما وثائقيا عن كندا.

shāhadnā fīlman wathāʾiqiyyan ʿan Kanadā.

We watched a documentary about Canada.

The ordinary targets omit short vowels, but the audio forms specify one conventional MSA pronunciation without changing the base letters. A loan can still have educated regional variation in vowel quality or stress; a dictionary or institutional pronunciation guide should settle high-visibility names.

The missing /p/, /v/, and hard /g/

Core MSA has no separate letters for foreign /p/, /v/, or the hard /g/ of English game. The most widely interoperable spellings use ordinary Arabic letters:

  • ب commonly adapts /p/: باريس Bārīs, باكستان Bākistān.
  • ف commonly adapts /v/: فيديو fīdyū, فيتامين fītāmīn.
  • Foreign /g/ has no single pan-Arab solution. Established forms and institutional policies variously use ج، غ، ق، ك or an extended letter.

Extended letters پ، ڤ، گ can represent /p, v, g/ in Persian-derived or specialist transcription systems. They are (specialist/regional), not additions to the core MSA alphabet. A publication that deliberately uses them should state that policy and confirm font, keyboard, search, and accessibility support.

أرسلت الملف بصيغة بي دي إف.

ʾarsaltu l-milaffa bi-ṣīghati bī dī ʾif.

I sent the file in PDF format.

Spelling an abbreviation as Arabic letter names makes it readable in an Arabic-only run. Keeping the Latin abbreviation may instead be correct in a technical document, but then it is a left-to-right island and needs careful bidirectional handling.

💡
Do not solve every missing sound by importing an extended letter. باريس and فيديو are normal MSA spellings precisely because Arabic convention adapts /p/ and /v/. Maximum phonetic detail is not always maximum readability.

Institutional variants are real, but not random

The same modern name may appear in more than one defensible spelling. The search company Google, for example, is written غوغل by some institutions and جوجل by others. The difference reflects both regional readings of ج and competing transcription traditions. It does not justify switching spellings halfway through one article.

Similarly, publishers may differ over whether a multiword trademark is spaced, joined, or preserved in Latin script. When the person or organization has an official Arabic name, use it. Otherwise choose a form supported by the intended audience and record it in the project’s style sheet.

تستخدم الصحيفة اسم غوغل في جميع أقسامها.

tastakhdimu ṣ-ṣaḥīfatu sma Ghūghila fī jamīʿi ʾaqsāmihā.

The newspaper uses the name Google in all its sections.

ثبت المحرر تهجئة الاسم قبل نشر الخبر.

thabbata l-muḥarriru tahjiʾata l-ismi qabla nashri l-khabar.

The editor fixed the spelling of the name before publishing the report.

Arabic has no capital letters, so a name is not visually rescued by capitalization. Correct base letters, spacing, and consistency carry more of the identification burden than they do in English.

A confusable final-letter set

Loanword recognition can depend on a single medial or final letter. Compare فيلم fīlm “film” and فيل fīl “elephant.” Dropping final م does not simplify the loan; it creates a different word.

اخترنا فيلما قصيرا للمهرجان.

ikhtarnā fīlman qaṣīran li-l-mihrjān.

We selected a short film for the festival.

رأى الطفل فيلا في الحديقة.

raʾā ṭ-ṭiflu fīlan fī l-ḥadīqa.

The child saw an elephant in the park.

Here the unvocalized accusative فيلا is also potentially confusable with the loan فيلا “villa.” Context and the audio-ready vocalization resolve the reading; ordinary Arabic does not always encode every lexical distinction.

Common Mistakes

1. Reversing letters while tracking a Latin source

❌ سافرت إلى سيراب.

Incorrect — the Arabic spelling of Paris is باريس; do not reverse its letter order.

✅ سافرت إلى باريس.

sāfartu ʾilā Bārīs.

I traveled to Paris.

2. Omitting a long-vowel letter

❌ شاهدت فديو جديدا.

Incorrect — the established spelling فيديو contains ي for the first long vowel.

✅ شاهدت فيديو جديدا.

shāhadtu fīdyū jadīdā.

I watched a new video.

3. Copying English letters instead of source sounds

❌ درست في كانادا.

Incorrect established form — Canada is conventionally كندا, not a letter-by-letter copy with an extra alif.

✅ درست في كندا.

darastu fī Kanadā.

I studied in Canada.

4. Mixing institutional variants for one referent

❌ أعلنت غوغل الخبر، ثم أكدت جوجل التفاصيل.

Editorially inconsistent — both spellings refer to the same organization here.

✅ أعلنت غوغل الخبر، ثم أكدت غوغل التفاصيل.

ʾaʿlanat Ghūghilu l-khabara, thumma ʾakkadat Ghūghilu t-tafāṣīl.

Google announced the news and then confirmed the details.

Key Takeaways

  • Transcribe source sounds, not Latin letters one by one, while respecting established Arabic names.
  • Ordinary ب، ف commonly adapt foreign /p, v/; hard /g/ has no single pan-Arab spelling.
  • Long-vowel letters ا، ي، و stabilize many loans, but not every source vowel maps exactly.
  • Record institutional and official-name choices, then keep one referent’s spelling consistent.
