Calques and Semantic Extension

Modern Arabic does not expand only by importing foreign sounds. It also builds calques—loan translations assembled from Arabic material—and extends inherited words into new technical or institutional senses. ذكاء اصطناعي translates the structure of “artificial intelligence”; نافذة extends the everyday “window” into a software interface; منصة extends a physical “platform” into a digital service. These processes can produce completely normal Modern Standard Arabic. The derivation map supplies the root-pattern baseline used here.

A plausible translation is not automatically an established term. Diagnose how the expression was formed, then verify its meaning, grammar, collocations, field, geography, and current frequency. The goal is not to prove a term “purely Arabic,” but to choose language readers can identify and specialists actually use.

These labels answer different questions. حوسبة سحابية combines derived حوسبة with adjective سحابية, itself based on سحاب “clouds”; the concept is calqued while its words use Arabic derivational resources. Current Arabic ITU technical recommendations use both الحوسبة السحابية and الذكاء الاصطناعي, strong evidence that the terms are established in formal telecommunications writing—not proof that every audience or institution rejects all alternatives. A text can also pair the phrase with borrowed كلاود in an informal technical discussion. Mixed histories are normal.

تستخدم الشركة الحوسبة السحابية لتخزين النسخ الاحتياطية.

tastakhdimu sh-sharikatu l-ḥawsabata s-saḥābiyyata li-takhzīni n-nusakhi l-iḥtiyāṭiyya(h).

The company uses cloud computing to store backup copies. (Formal technical usage.)

شرح المهندس أن خدمة السحابة لا تعني سحابة حقيقية في السماء.

sharaḥa l-muhandisu ʾanna khidmata s-saḥābati lā taʿnī saḥābatan ḥaqīqiyyatan fī s-samāʾ.

The engineer explained that a cloud service does not mean a real cloud in the sky.

💡
Word history can be layered: a phrase may be conceptually calqued, internally derived, and institutionally standardized at different stages.

A calque translates structure

In ذكاء اصطناعي, ذكاء is a masculine noun and اصطناعي is a masculine singular adjective agreeing with it. English puts artificial before intelligence; Arabic places the adjective after the noun. The phrase is not an iḍāfa, so the adjective matches definiteness: الذكاء الاصطناعي.

يساعد الذكاء الاصطناعي الأطباء، لكنه لا يحل محل الحكم السريري.

yusāʿidu dh-dhakāʾu l-iṣṭināʿiyyu l-ʾaṭibbāʾ, lākinnahu lā yaḥullu maḥalla l-ḥukmi s-sarīriyy.

Artificial intelligence assists doctors, but it does not replace clinical judgment. (Formal technical prose.)

قرص صلب “hard disk” likewise uses noun + adjective. Its plural can be أقراص صلبة: صلبة is feminine singular because nonhuman broken plural أقراص takes feminine-singular agreement.

استبدل الفني ثلاثة أقراص صلبة تالفة في الخادم.

istabdala l-faniyyu thalāthata ʾaqrāṣin ṣulbatin tālifatin fī l-khādim.

The technician replaced three damaged hard disks in the server.

A word-for-word calque can fail when it copies source-language syntax or ignores the conventional Arabic concept. Therefore “all components are Arabic” is not enough. Check the phrase as a unit.

Semantic extension gives an old word a new domain sense

نافذة ordinarily names an architectural window; software uses it for a delimited on-screen view. It remains grammatically feminine and normally pluralizes as نوافذ in both senses. منصة can be a raised platform or a digital platform; its regular plural منصات is common in technical and institutional prose.

افتح نافذة جديدة، ثم انقل الملف إلى المجلد المشترك.

iftaḥ nāfidhatan jadīda(h), thumma nquli l-malaffa ʾilā l-mujalladi l-mushtarak.

Open a new window, then move the file to the shared folder. (Software instruction.)

أطلقت الجامعة منصة رقمية، وسجل الطلاب في منصاتها التعليمية.

ʾaṭlaqati l-jāmiʿatu minaṣṣatan raqmiyya(h), wa-sajjala ṭ-ṭullābu fī minaṣṣātihā t-taʿlīmiyya(h).

The university launched a digital platform, and students enrolled on its educational platforms.

The modern sense does not erase the older one. A sentence such as وقف المتحدث على المنصة still means that the speaker stood on the physical platform. Field cues—software verbs, adjectives such as رقمي, and surrounding nouns—select the technical reading.

خلية shows extension in another domain. It can refer to a small compartment, a biological cell, or an organized unit according to context. Its plural is خلايا, not a mechanically added خليات in ordinary scientific usage.

فحصت الباحثة الخلايا تحت المجهر، ثم سجلت معدل انقسامها.

faḥaṣati l-bāḥithatu l-khalāyā taḥta l-mijhar, thumma sajjalat muʿaddala nqisāmihā.

The researcher examined the cells under the microscope and recorded their rate of division. (Scientific usage.)

Families show both productivity and lexicalization

Root ح-س-ب offers inherited حَسَبَ “calculated,” حِسَاب “calculation/account,” حَاسِب “calculator/computing agent according to context,” and modern حَاسُوب “computer,” plural حَوَاسِيب. From the modern technical base, حَوْسَبَ “computerized” and حَوْسَبَة “computing/computerization” are established quadriliteral formations.

حسب المحاسب التكلفة ببرنامج حاسوبي، ثم أرسل الحساب النهائي.

ḥasaba l-muḥāsibu t-taklifata bi-barnāmajin ḥāsūbiyy, thumma ʾarsala l-ḥisāba n-nihāʾiyy.

The accountant calculated the cost with a computer program and then sent the final account.

بدأت الوزارة حوسبة السجلات، لكن بعض الملفات بقي ورقيا.

badaʾati l-wizāratu ḥawsabata s-sijillāt, lākinna baʿḍa l-malaffāti baqiya waraqiyyan.

The ministry began computerizing the records, but some files remained on paper. (Formal institutional usage.)

The quadriliteral verb family demonstrates productive adaptation after حاسوب / حوسبة became established. It does not prove that speakers may turn every new noun into a verb at will. حاسوب itself is lexicalized: neither its exact sense nor plural follows automatically from the older verb حسب.

💡
Productivity operates within communities of usage. A pattern can make a proposal interpretable; repeated specialist and public use makes it conventional.

Borrowing and calquing can compete without one being “wrong”

Technical writing often contains doublets. حاسوب and كمبيوتر can both mean “computer”; بريد إلكتروني and إيميل can both refer to email, with different register and editorial profiles. A formal institution may prefer the calque or derived term, while customer support quotes the interface label its users actually see.

يستعمل الدليل عبارة بريد إلكتروني، وتظهر كلمة إيميل بين قوسين لمساعدة المستخدم.

yastaʿmilu d-dalīlu ʿibārata barīdin ʾilikturūniyy, wa-taẓharu kalimatu ʾīmīl bayna qawsayni li-musāʿadati l-mustakhdim.

The guide uses the phrase barīd iliktrūniyy, while the word email appears in parentheses to help the user.

Register labels should be evidence-based. بريد إلكتروني is neutral formal MSA; إيميل is a widespread borrowing, especially in informal and technical speech, but its distribution varies. Do not call a term “colloquial,” “official,” or “obsolete” from its etymology alone.

A corpus verification workflow

Verification is more than counting search hits. Use a lexicographic source for form and meaning, a corpus for distribution, and recent specialist sources for domain fit. The Cairo Academy dictionary search provides root, singular/plural, and dictionary search functions. The King Salman Global Academy services currently provide access to published dictionaries, the Riyadh Dictionary, and the Falak corpus platform. An academy resource is valuable evidence, but no single database establishes universal usage.

Use this sequence:

  1. Search the exact vocalized or unvocalized term and likely variants.
  2. Check singular, plural, gender, and whether the technical sense has its own definition.
  3. Inspect concordance lines for real collocations, not isolated counts.
  4. Filter by date, genre, country, and field when the tool permits.
  5. Compare at least two independent specialist institutions.
  6. Summarize the pattern in your own words and create an original example; do not copy a corpus sentence.

بحثت المحررة عن نافذة في نصوص تقنية حديثة، ثم قارنت الجمع والصفات المصاحبة.

baḥathati l-muḥarriratu ʿan nāfidhatin fī nuṣūṣin tiqniyyatin ḥadītha(h), thumma qāranati l-jamʿa wa-ṣ-ṣifāti l-muṣāḥiba(h).

The editor searched for nāfidha in recent technical texts, then compared its plural and accompanying adjectives.

A high count can reflect copied material, one prolific website, or a different sense. For منصة, inspect whether examples concern a station platform, a conference stage, an oil platform, or a digital service. Meaning-specific concordance reading is indispensable.

Common Mistakes

Assigning a false root to a loan

❌ إنترنت مشتقة من الجذر ن ت ر، ولذلك جمعها أناتر.

Incorrect—إنترنت is a borrowing, not an inherited root-pattern derivative, and invented أناتر has no evidential basis.

✅ أتعامل مع كلمة إنترنت بوصفها لفظا مقترضا وأتحقق من تركيبها في السياق.

ʾataʿāmalu maʿa kalimati ʾintarnit bi-waṣfihā lafẓan muqtaraḍan wa-ʾataḥaqququ min tarkībihā fī s-siyāq.

I treat the word internet as a borrowing and verify how it is constructed in context.

Assuming every proposed calque is accepted

❌ إذا ترجمت أجزاء المصطلح ترجمة صحيحة صار التعبير شائعا تلقائيا.

Incorrect—compositional accuracy does not prove conventional specialist usage.

✅ أتحقق من المصطلح المركب كوحدة في مصادر حديثة مستقلة.

ʾataḥaqququ mina l-muṣṭalaḥi l-murakkabi ka-waḥdatin fī maṣādira ḥadīthatin mustaqilla(h).

I verify the compound term as a unit in recent independent sources.

Regularizing a technical plural blindly

❌ جمع خلية في علم الأحياء هو خليات دائما.

Incorrect—the established plural in this sense is خلايا.

✅ يحتوي النسيج على خلايا متخصصة تؤدي وظائف مختلفة.

yaḥtawī n-nasīju ʿalā khalāyā mutakhaṣṣiṣatin tuʾaddī waẓāʾifa mukhtalifa(h).

The tissue contains specialized cells that perform different functions.

Replacing an understood term with an opaque private coinage

❌ أحذف المصطلح المستعمل وأضع كلمة غامضة من إنشائي تجنبا لكل اقتراض.

Incorrect—private purism obstructs communication and is not evidence-based terminology work.

✅ أختار اللفظ المفهوم في المجال وأشرح البديل عند الحاجة.

ʾakhtāru l-lafẓa l-mafhūma fī l-majāli wa-ʾashraḥu l-badīla ʿinda l-ḥāja(h).

I choose the expression understood in the field and explain the alternative when needed.

Mistaking the physical sense for the technical one

❌ طلب مني البرنامج فتح نافذة، فبحثت عن نافذة الغرفة.

Incorrect—the software context selects the extended interface sense of نافذة.

✅ في واجهة البرنامج تدل نافذة على مساحة مستقلة على الشاشة.

fī wājihati l-barnāmaji tadullu nāfidhatun ʿalā masāḥatin mustaqillatin ʿalā sh-shāsha(h).

In a program interface, nāfidha denotes an independent area on the screen.

Key Takeaways

  • A calque translates a concept's components or structure; semantic extension gives an existing word a new domain sense.
  • Calquing, derivation, borrowing, and planning can all contribute to one modern term.
  • Preserve ordinary Arabic grammar: adjective order, agreement, gender, and attested plurals still apply in technical vocabulary.
  • Pattern transparency makes a term analyzable, not automatically accepted.
  • Verify terms through dictionaries, concordances, and several current specialist sources, then write original examples.
