A geminate root has identical second and third radicals, such as ع-د-د, ش-ق-ق, and م-د-د. Derived Forms add their own consonants and vowels around those radicals. This can produce shapes that look deceptively simple—اِمْتَدَّ “extend” still ends in one written دّ—or unusually dense—Form II عَدَّدَ “enumerate” contains a doubled د followed by another د after a vowel.
The safe analysis keeps three layers separate: the root, the derived-Form frame, and any contraction of the final two radicals. Do not count every written letter as a separate radical, and do not treat one shadda as a mysterious “triple consonant.” Meanings must also be verified lexically: a derived Form suggests a relationship, but never guarantees a translation. Review the broader Form VIII pattern and Form X pattern when those derivational markers are unfamiliar.
One root, two different sources of doubling
Compare root ع-د-د in three attested verbs:
| Form | Principal parts | Structure | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | عَدَّ / يَعُدُّ / عَدٌّ | R2 and R3 contract: دّ | count; consider |
| II | عَدَّدَ / يُعَدِّدُ / تَعْدِيدٌ | Form II doubles R2; R3 remains separate | enumerate; list |
| V | تَعَدَّدَ / يَتَعَدَّدُ / تَعَدُّدٌ | تـ + Form-II-type internal shape | be numerous; multiply |
Form I عَدَّ writes the two identical root consonants together as دّ. Form II follows فَعَّلَ: R2 is doubled by the Form II pattern, while R3 is still present after the following vowel. Thus عَدَّدَ is segmented عَ + دَّ + دَ and pronounced ʿaddada. Form V adds تـ to the corresponding shape: تَعَدَّدَ taʿaddada. Neither form contains a single threefold consonant; the intervening vowel separates the final د.

yuʿaddidu l-bāḥithāni l-maṣādira biḥasabi sanati n-nashr
The two researchers list the sources by year of publication. (Academic VSO; singular verb before a dual subject.)
Forms VII and VIII retain terminal root gemination
Forms VII and VIII often end in the same contracted R2–R3 sequence seen in Form I. Form VII اِنْشَقَّ / يَنْشَقُّ / اِنْشِقَاقٌ “split; crack,” root ش-ق-ق, adds انـ in the perfect and maṣdar and نـ inside the imperfect stem. Form VIII اِمْتَدَّ / يَمْتَدُّ / اِمْتِدَادٌ “extend; stretch,” root م-د-د, adds ت after the first radical: underlying م + ت + د + د surfaces with final دّ.
| Form | Perfect | Imperfect | Maṣdar |
|---|---|---|---|
| VII, ش-ق-ق | اِنْشَقَّ | يَنْشَقُّ | اِنْشِقَاقٌ |
| VIII, م-د-د | اِمْتَدَّ | يَمْتَدُّ | اِمْتِدَادٌ |
| VIII, ش-د-د | اِشْتَدَّ | يَشْتَدُّ | اِشْتِدَادٌ |
The initial alif of Forms VII and VIII carries hamzat al-waṣl. It is pronounced with a support vowel at the beginning of an utterance but not as a glottal stop after a preceding vowel. The imperfect does not need that alif because its person prefix already precedes the cluster: يَنْشَقُّ، يَمْتَدُّ.
انشق الأنبوب القديم عند الوصلة، فتسرب الماء إلى القبو
inshaqqa l-ʾunbūbu l-qadīmu ʿinda l-waṣlati, fatasarraba l-māʾu ʾilā l-qabw
The old pipe split at the joint, and water leaked into the basement. (Formal.)
يمتد المسار الساحلي مسافة أربعين كيلومترا
yamtaddu l-masāru s-sāḥiliyyu masāfata ʾarbaʿīna kīlūmitran
The coastal route extends for forty kilometers. (Formal descriptive prose.)
اشتدت العاصفة مساء، فأغلقت السلطات الطريقين
ishtaddati l-ʿāṣifatu masāʾan, faʾaghlaqati s-suluṭātu ṭ-ṭarīqayn
The storm intensified in the evening, so the authorities closed both roads. (Formal news register.)
These meanings are lexical. Form VIII can carry reflexive or middle tendencies elsewhere, but امتدّ simply means “extend,” and اشتدّ means “intensify; become severe.” Do not translate either mechanically as “do the root to oneself.”
Form X: استعدّ is not a sound-root template pasted unchanged
Form X اِسْتَعَدَّ / يَسْتَعِدُّ / اِسْتِعْدَادٌ “prepare; be ready,” root ع-د-د, combines the Form X frame استـ with a geminate root. It is an attested lexical verb; its meaning is not transparently “seek counting.” The corresponding adjective/participle مُسْتَعِدٌّ means “ready, prepared.”
استعد الفريق لإطلاق النسخة الجديدة صباح الاثنين
istaʿadda l-farīqu liʾiṭlāqi n-nuskhati l-jadīdati ṣabāḥa l-ithnayn
The team prepared to launch the new version on Monday morning. (Formal.)
تستعد الباحثتان لعرض نتائجهما في المؤتمر
tastaʿiddu l-bāḥithatāni liʿarḍi natāʾijihimā fī l-muʾtamar
The two researchers are preparing to present their results at the conference. (Academic VSO; singular feminine verb.)
لن يستعدوا في الوقت المناسب ما لم تصلهم البيانات اليوم
lan yastaʿiddū fī l-waqti l-munāsibi mā lam taṣilhumu l-bayānātu l-yawm
They will not be ready in time unless the data reaches them today. (Formal; masculine-plural subjunctive with nūn deletion.)
The preposition is normally لِـ before what one prepares for: استعد للامتحان، استعد للسفر. English prepare something may instead require transitive Form IV أَعَدَّ / يُعِدُّ / إِعْدَادٌ “prepare,” so complement structure helps distinguish verbs that unvocalized writing can make look similar.
Consonantal subject suffixes unfold terminal gemination
Forms VII, VIII, and X end in contracted R2–R3 in the third-person masculine singular perfect. Before consonant-initial subject suffixes, they unfold exactly where the two root radicals would otherwise collide with the suffix:
| 3 m.sg. | 1 sg. | Segmentation |
|---|---|---|
| اِنْشَقَّ | اِنْشَقَقْتُ | انـ + ش + ق + ق + تُ |
| اِمْتَدَّ | اِمْتَدَدْتُ | ا + م + ت + د + د + تُ |
| اِسْتَعَدَّ | اِسْتَعْدَدْتُ | استـ + ع + د + د + تُ |
امتددت على المقعد الخلفي لأريح ساقي المصابة
imtadadtu ʿalā l-maqʿadi l-khalfiyyi liʾurīḥa sāqiya l-muṣāba
I stretched out on the back seat to rest my injured leg. (Neutral MSA.)
استعددنا للاجتماع بمراجعة الأرقام ليلة أمس
istaʿdadnā lil-ijtimāʿi bimurājaʿati l-ʾarqāmi laylata ʾams

انشقت العبوة حين حاولت فتحها
inshaqqati l-ʿubwatu ḥīna ḥāwaltu fatḥahā
The package split when I tried to open it. (Formal; feminine singular remains contracted.)
The last example is اِنْشَقَّتْ, not first-person اِنْشَقَقْتُ. As in Form I, the feminine-singular ending keeps contraction, while ـتُ unfolds it.
Do not manufacture a derived Form
Arabic roots do not automatically occur in every Form. Even when two Forms exist, their meanings may have separated. عَدَّدَ “enumerate” and تَعَدَّدَ “be numerous” form a useful pair, but this relationship does not authorize a learner to create an unattested Form V from any Form II. Likewise, اِنْشَقَّ and اِمْتَدَّ belong to different roots and Forms; their similar endings reflect gemination, not a shared meaning.
An English gloss can also hide valency. عَدَّدَ الأسبابَ takes a direct object “list the reasons.” اِسْتَعَدَّ لِلسفر is intransitive and uses لِـ for the upcoming event. اِمْتَدَّ الطريقُ إلى الساحل has the extending entity as subject and often uses إلى for the endpoint.
يمتد الطريق إلى الساحل، لكن الشركة تعدد مخاطر البناء عليه
yamtaddu ṭ-ṭarīqu ʾilā s-sāḥili, lākinna sh-sharikata tuʿaddidu makhāṭira l-bināʾi ʿalayh
The road extends to the coast, but the company lists the risks of building on it. (Formal.)
Common Mistakes
Collapsing Form II عَدَّدَ into Form I عَدَّ
❌ عد التقرير أسباب التأخير واحدا واحدا
Incorrect for ‘the report enumerated’—Form II عدّد keeps a separate third radical after the doubled second radical.
✅ عدد التقرير أسباب التأخير واحدا واحدا
ʿaddada t-taqrīru ʾasbāba t-taʾkhīri wāḥidan wāḥidan
The report listed the reasons for the delay one by one.
Treating the Form VIII ت as a root radical
❌ أصل امتد هو م-ت-د
Incorrect—the ت belongs to the Form VIII frame; امتدّ has root م-د-د.
✅ امتد الصف إلى خارج المبنى
imtadda ṣ-ṣaffu ʾilā khāriji l-mabnā
The queue extended outside the building.
Keeping contraction before first-person ـتُ
❌ استعدت للاختبار
Incorrect if intended as first-person *istaʿadtu*; the first-person perfect unfolds to استعددتُ. Unvocalized استعدت normally represents استعدّتْ ‘she prepared.’
✅ استعددت للاختبار بحل نماذج سابقة
istaʿdadtu lil-ikhtibāri biḥalli namādhija sābiqa
I prepared for the test by solving previous sample questions.
Calculating meaning from the Form label
❌ استعد تعني طلب العد
Incorrect—استعدّ is the lexical Form X verb ‘prepare; be ready,’ not ‘seek counting.’
✅ استعد المسافر للمغادرة قبل الفجر
istaʿadda l-musāfiru lil-mughādarati qabla l-fajr
The traveler prepared to leave before dawn.
Losing the required preposition
❌ استعد الفريق إطلاق المنتج
Incorrect in the ordinary ‘prepare for’ frame—استعدّ uses لـ before the event or activity.
✅ استعد الفريق لإطلاق المنتج في الخريف
istaʿadda l-farīqu liʾiṭlāqi l-muntaji fī l-kharīf
The team prepared to launch the product in the autumn.
Key Takeaways
- Separate the root from the derived frame: امتدّ is Form VIII from م-د-د, not root م-ت-د.
- Form II عَدَّدَ and Form V تَعَدَّدَ retain a separate R3 after the Form-II-type shadda.
- Forms VII اِنْشَقَّ, VIII اِمْتَدَّ, and X اِسْتَعَدَّ contract terminal identical radicals.
- Consonantal perfect suffixes unfold them: اِنْشَقَقْتُ، اِمْتَدَدْتُ، اِسْتَعْدَدْتُ.
- Derived meanings and complement frames are lexical facts, not automatic products of a pattern label.
