Form VIII inserts t immediately after the first root consonant: اِفْتَعَلَ in the perfect, يَفْتَعِلُ in the imperfect, and اِفْتِعَال as the regular verbal-noun pattern. This t is inside the stem, not a prefix placed before the root. Form VIII verbs often suggest involvement, acquisition, or action centered on the subject, but those are historical tendencies—not reliable English translations. The Arabic verb-system overview explains how a derived Form differs from tense, aspect, mood, and voice.
The central example is اِجْتَمَعَ — يَجْتَمِعُ — اِجْتِمَاعًا “meet; assemble,” root ج-م-ع. The root consonants appear as جـ-مـ-ع, while the Form VIII ت follows ج. Learn this full principal-part set and its complement في “meet in/at”; neither the pattern nor the English gloss supplies the complement automatically.
The principal-part pattern
| Environment | Pattern | ج-م-ع |
|---|---|---|
| perfect, 3 m.sg. | اِفْتَعَلَ | اِجْتَمَعَ |
| imperfect indicative, 3 m.sg. | يَفْتَعِلُ | يَجْتَمِعُ |
| imperative, 2 m.sg. | اِفْتَعِلْ | اِجْتَمِعْ |
| verbal noun | اِفْتِعَال | اِجْتِمَاع |
| active participle | مُفْتَعِل | مُجْتَمِع |
Form VIII's initial alif carries hamzat al-waṣl, so it is written as plain ا, not إ. At the beginning of an utterance, اجتمع begins ijtamaʿa. After a vowel, the supporting vowel disappears while the written alif remains: فاجتمع is pronounced fa-jtamaʿa, not fa-ʾijtamaʿa. The imperfect begins directly with its person prefix: يجتمع, never an invented ياجتمع.
اجتمع الفريق في القاعة لمراجعة الخطة.
ijtamaʿa l-farīqu fī l-qāʿati limurājaʿati l-khuṭṭa.
The team met in the hall to review the plan.
وصلت المديرة فاجتمع الأعضاء حول الطاولة.
waṣalati l-mudīratu fa-jtamaʿa l-ʾaʿḍāʾu ḥawla ṭ-ṭāwila.
The director arrived, so the members gathered around the table.
Meanings and complements are lexical
Older labels such as “reflexive” or “middle” describe part of Form VIII's history, but they do not predict individual verbs. اِعْتَمَدَ — يَعْتَمِدُ — اِعْتِمَادًا (root ع-م-د) means “approve/adopt” with a direct object, but “rely on” with على. اِقْتَرَحَ — يَقْتَرِحُ — اِقْتِرَاحًا (root ق-ر-ح) means “suggest” and takes the suggestion directly. اِكْتَشَفَ — يَكْتَشِفُ — اِكْتِشَافًا (root ك-ش-ف) means “discover.” None is translated accurately by adding English oneself.
اعتمدت اللجنة النسخة النهائية من التقرير.
iʿtamadati l-lajnatu n-nuskhata n-nihāʾiyyata mina t-taqrīr.
The committee approved the final version of the report.
اعتمد الفريق على بيانات حديثة في تقدير التكاليف.
iʿtamada l-farīqu ʿalā bayānātin ḥadīthatin fī taqdīri t-takālīf.
The team relied on recent data when estimating the costs.
The two frames of اعتمد are a useful warning. Omitting على does not merely make “rely” less idiomatic; it can produce the different meaning “approve/adopt.” Store each sense together with its valency.
اقترحت المهندسة حلا مؤقتا حتى تصل القطع الجديدة.
iqtaraḥati l-muhandisatu ḥallan muʾaqqatan ḥattā taṣila l-qiṭaʿu l-jadīda.
The female engineer suggested a temporary solution until the new parts arrive.
Coronal assimilation changes the visible pattern
When R1 is a coronal consonant, the sequence R1 + ت may assimilate in voicing, emphasis, or identity. These are standard morphological spellings, not casual pronunciation. The table shows the regular surface outcome of the cluster:
| First radical | R1 + Form VIII ت | Outcome | Representative form |
|---|---|---|---|
| ت | ت + ت | تّ | اِتَّبَعَ “follow,” ت-ب-ع |
| ث | ث + ت | ثّ | full assimilation; uncommon in contemporary core vocabulary |
| د | د + ت | دّ | اِدَّعَى “claim,” د-ع-و |
| ذ | ذ + ت | ذّ | full assimilation in the regular analysis |
| ز | ز + ت | زْد | اِزْدَادَ “increase,” ز-ي-د |
| ص | ص + ت | صْط | اِصْطَدَمَ “collide,” ص-د-م |
| ض | ض + ت | ضْط | اِضْطَرَبَ “be disturbed/fluctuate,” ض-ر-ب |
| ط | ط + ت | طّ | اِطَّلَعَ “examine/be informed,” ط-ل-ع |
| ظ | ظ + ت | ظّ | full assimilation; rare in contemporary core vocabulary |
The high-frequency spellings must be learned as written. For instance, اِدَّخَرَ — يَدَّخِرُ — اِدِّخَارًا “save, set aside” is conventionally connected with root ذ-خ-ر, yet its established surface spelling has دّ. That lexical outcome is more useful than forcing an uncommon theoretical spelling. In all cases, the assimilated consonant still performs the grammatical job of the Form VIII t.
ازدادت التكاليف بعد ارتفاع أسعار الوقود.
izdādati t-takālīfu baʿda rtifāʿi ʾasʿāri l-wuqūd.
Costs increased after fuel prices rose. (Nonhuman plural with feminine-singular agreement.)
اضطربت الأسواق عند صدور الخبر المفاجئ.
iḍṭarabati l-ʾaswāqu ʿinda ṣudūri l-khabari l-mufājiʾ.
The markets fluctuated when the unexpected news was released. (Formal economic register.)
اطلعت الباحثتان على السجلات الأصلية.
iṭṭalaʿati l-bāḥithatāni ʿalā s-sijillāti l-ʾaṣliyya.
The two female researchers examined the original records. (Singular verb before a dual subject.)
Agreement and mood
For the sound verb يجتمع, the indicative ends in -u, the subjunctive after لن in -a, and the jussive after لم in sukūn. The infixed t remains part of the stem throughout.
| Subject or environment | Form |
|---|---|
| هو, perfect | اِجْتَمَعَ |
| هي, perfect | اِجْتَمَعَتْ |
| هما (f.), perfect | اِجْتَمَعَتَا |
| هم, imperfect indicative | يَجْتَمِعُونَ |
| after لن, 3 m.sg. | لَنْ يَجْتَمِعَ |
| after لم, 3 m.sg. | لَمْ يَجْتَمِعْ |
لن يجتمع الوفد قبل وصول المترجمة.
lan yajtamiʿa l-wafdu qabla wuṣūli l-mutarjima.
The delegation will not meet before the interpreter arrives. (Subjunctive after lan.)
لم يجتمع المندوبان على انفراد.
lam yajtamiʿi l-mandūbāni ʿalā nfirād.
The two delegates did not meet privately. (Jussive singular verb in VSO.)
With a subject before the verb, use full agreement: المندوبان لم يجتمعا. With a verb before an overt dual or plural human subject, neutral formal MSA normally uses a singular verb, as above. Nonhuman plurals take feminine-singular agreement, as ازدادت التكاليف illustrates.
Weak, hamzated, and geminate roots
Root shape can obscure the template further. Initial-weak اِتَّصَلَ — يَتَّصِلُ — اِتِّصَالًا “contact; be connected,” root و-ص-ل, loses the root w and doubles the Form VIII t. It commonly takes بـ before a person or institution. Final-weak اِتَّقَى — يَتَّقِي — اِتِّقَاءً “guard against; avoid,” root و-ق-ي, combines this initial change with loss of final ي in the singular jussive: لم يتقِ.
اتصلت المهندستان بالمختبر لتأكيد النتيجة.
ittaṣalati l-muhandisatāni bil-mukhtabari litaʾkīdi n-natīja.
The two female engineers contacted the laboratory to confirm the result. (Singular verb in VSO.)
لم يتق الفريق مخاطر التسرب في المرحلة الأولى.
lam yattaqi l-farīqu makhāṭira t-tasarrubi fī l-marḥalati l-ʾūlā.
The team did not guard against the risks of leakage in the first phase.
Hamzated اِئْتَمَنَ — يَأْتَمِنُ — اِئْتِمَانًا “entrust; trust,” root ء-م-ن, preserves the root hamza even though the perfect also begins with the pattern's hamzat al-waṣl. Geminate اِهْتَمَّ — يَهْتَمُّ — اِهْتِمَامًا “take an interest; care,” root ه-م-م, contracts R2 and R3 under shadda and normally takes بـ.
ائتمنت الإدارة الموظفة الجديدة على حفظ السجلات.
iʾtamanati l-ʾidāratu l-muwaẓẓafata l-jadīdata ʿalā ḥifẓi s-sijillāt.
The administration entrusted the new female employee with maintaining the records.
Common Mistakes
Putting the t before the first radical
❌ اتجمع الفريق في القاعة.
Incorrect—Form VIII inserts ت after the first root consonant: اجتمع, not اتجمع.
✅ اجتمع الفريق في القاعة في التاسعة.
ijtamaʿa l-farīqu fī l-qāʿati fī t-tāsiʿa.
The team met in the hall at nine.
Writing hamzat al-qaṭʿ
❌ إجتمع الأعضاء لمراجعة الخطة.
Incorrect spelling—Form VIII begins with hamzat al-waṣl, written as plain ا: اجتمع.
✅ اجتمع الأعضاء لمراجعة الخطة المعدلة.
ijtamaʿa l-ʾaʿḍāʾu limurājaʿati l-khuṭṭati l-muʿaddala.
The members met to review the revised plan.
Ignoring emphatic assimilation
❌ اضتربت الأسواق بعد الإعلان.
Incorrect spelling—the Form VIII ت becomes emphatic ط after ض: اضطربت.
✅ اضطربت الأسواق بعد الإعلان مباشرة.
iḍṭarabati l-ʾaswāqu baʿda l-ʾiʿlāni mubāshara.
The markets fluctuated immediately after the announcement.
Losing a lexical complement
❌ اعتمد الفريق البيانات القديمة.
Incorrect for ‘relied on’—without على, اعتمد can mean ‘approved/adopted’ the data.
✅ اعتمد الفريق على البيانات المحدثة.
iʿtamada l-farīqu ʿalā l-bayānāti l-muḥaddatha.
The team relied on the updated data.
Giving a verb-first clause full plural agreement
❌ اجتمعوا الأعضاء في مكتب المدير.
Incorrect in neutral formal VSO—use singular اجتمع before the overt plural subject.
✅ اجتمع الأعضاء في مكتب المدير بعد الظهر.
ijtamaʿa l-ʾaʿḍāʾu fī maktabi l-mudīri baʿda ẓ-ẓuhr.
The members met in the director's office in the afternoon.
Key Takeaways
- Form VIII follows اِفْتَعَلَ — يَفْتَعِلُ — اِفْتِعَالًا, with t after R1.
- Its initial alif carries hamzat al-waṣl and loses its supporting vowel after a preceding vowel.
- Coronal R1 consonants can assimilate the t in voicing, emphasis, or identity; the resulting spelling is part of the standard form.
- Meanings and complements are lexical: اعتمد شيئًا and اعتمد على شيء are different frames.
- Weak, hamzated, and geminate roots require verified principal parts rather than mechanical reconstruction.
