Form V تفعّل

Form V has the perfect pattern تَفَعَّلَ: an initial t plus the doubled middle radical associated with Form II. Its imperfect is يَتَفَعَّلُ, and its usual verbal noun is تَفَعُّل. Many Form V verbs describe the subject undergoing, taking on, or deliberately acquiring the effect associated with Form II, but reflexive and result meanings are tendencies rather than automatic translations. Review the Arabic verb-system overview if aspect, agreement, mood, and derived Form are still blending together.

The central example is تَعَلَّمَ — يَتَعَلَّمُ — تَعَلُّمًا “learn,” root ع-ل-م. Compare Form II عَلَّمَ “teach”: learning can be conceptualized as acquiring teaching or knowledge, but contemporary تعلّم simply means “learn.” It does not require an English reflexive pronoun.

The first ت is a real derivational consonant. It is neither an alif nor hamzat al-waṣl, so it is pronounced at the beginning and after a preceding word. In the imperfect, the person prefix comes before it: يـ + تعلّم = يتعلّم. A feminine or second-person prefix can create two adjacent written t's: هي تتعلّم. Both belong to the careful formal form. Some older or Classical forms exceptionally assimilate this derivational t to the first root consonant, or omit one t where two meet; neither process is a productive contemporary MSA rule. In ordinary formal MSA, retain the stem t and normally write both t's in forms such as تتعلّم and تتطوّر.

تعلمت مريم تشغيل الجهاز خلال أسبوع.

taʿallamat maryamu tashghīla l-jihāzi khilāla ʾusbūʿ.

Maryam learned to operate the device within a week.

يتعلم الموظفون النظام الجديد في ورش قصيرة.

yataʿallamu l-muwaẓẓafūna n-niẓāma l-jadīda fī warashin qaṣīra.

The employees are learning the new system in short workshops. (Singular verb in VSO.)

تعلّم can take a noun directly, as in تعلّم النظام, or a verbal noun such as تشغيل الجهاز. English normally says “learn how to operate,” but Arabic need not insert a word corresponding to how.

💡
Recognize the two layers in يتعلّم: imperfect person prefix يـ + Form V stem تعلّم. Keeping them separate prevents both يعلّم “he teaches” and an invented initial alif.

The relationship with Form II

Form V is often the intransitive, middle, or reflexive counterpart of a Form II verb:

طورت البلدية شبكة الحافلات فتطورت الخدمة تدريجيا.

ṭawwarati l-baladiyyatu shabakata l-ḥāfilāti fataṭawwarati l-khidmatu tadrījiyyan.

The municipality developed the bus network, so the service gradually improved.

The Form II subject البلدية acts on an object. Form V تطورت الخدمة makes the affected participant the subject and leaves the cause unexpressed. This resembles an English intransitive alternation (“they improved the service” / “the service improved”), not necessarily a conscious reflexive act.

تحسنت النتائج بعد تعديل طريقة الاختبار.

taḥassanati n-natāʾiju baʿda taʿdīli ṭarīqati l-ikhtibār.

The results improved after the testing method was changed. (Nonhuman plural with feminine-singular agreement.)

تذكرت المهندستان موعد الفحص في اللحظة الأخيرة.

tadhakkarati l-muhandisatāni mawʿida l-faḥṣi fī l-laḥẓati l-ʾakhīra.

The two female engineers remembered the inspection appointment at the last moment. (Singular verb in VSO.)

Calling all these verbs “reflexive” hides important differences. تذكّر الموعد takes a direct object; تحسّن is normally intransitive; تعلّم may take a skill or subject. Learn the valency of the lexical verb.

Deliberate acquisition and gradual process

Some Form V verbs suggest effort, repetition, or gradual acquisition. تَدَرَّبَ — يَتَدَرَّبُ — تَدَرُّبًا “train/practise” (root د-ر-ب) commonly takes على before the skill. تَعَوَّدَ — يَتَعَوَّدُ — تَعَوُّدًا “become accustomed” (root ع-و-د) takes على before a noun or verbal noun.

تدربت الطبيبتان على استخدام الجهاز الجديد.

tadarrabati ṭ-ṭabībatāni ʿalā stikhdāmi l-jihāzi l-jadīd.

The two female doctors trained to use the new device.

يتعود الأطفال على الجدول الجديد بعد أيام قليلة.

yataʿawwadu l-ʾaṭfālu ʿalā l-jadwali l-jadīdi baʿda ʾayyāmin qalīla.

The children get used to the new schedule after a few days. (Singular verb in VSO.)

These nuances are not supplied mechanically by تـ. For example, تَكَلَّمَ — يَتَكَلَّمُ — تَكَلُّمًا simply means “speak,” usually with عن for a topic and مع for an interlocutor. Its present meaning must be stored as a lexical fact.

تكلمت الخبيرة عن المخاطر بلغة واضحة.

takallamati l-khabīratu ʿani l-makhāṭiri bilughatin wāḍiḥa.

The female expert spoke about the risks in clear language.

💡
Ask what the Form V subject does in the actual verb: undergoes a change, acquires a skill, recalls something, or performs a lexical action. “Does it to itself” is only one possible interpretation.

Perfect, imperfect, and mood

Form V uses the ordinary agreement and imperfect-mood endings. With يتعلّم, the indicative is يتعلّمُ, the subjunctive after لن is يتعلّمَ, and the jussive after لم is يتعلّمْ.

لن تتعلم الطالبتان البرنامج في يوم واحد.

lan tataʿallama ṭ-ṭālibatāni l-barnāmaja fī yawmin wāḥid.

The two female students will not learn the program in one day. (Singular verb in VSO.)

الطالبتان لم تتعلما البرنامج من قبل.

aṭ-ṭālibatāni lam tataʿallamā l-barnāmaja min qabl.

The two female students had not learned the program before. (Subject-first dual agreement.)

English “had not learned” here is a natural contextual translation of Arabic لم + jussive. Arabic has not changed the jussive into a special pluperfect stem.

Weak and hamzated roots

Final-weak تَلَقَّى — يَتَلَقَّى — تَلَقِّيًا “receive” (root ل-ق-ي) ends in alif maqṣūra in the perfect and imperfect. Its singular jussive deletes that weak letter: لم يتلقَّ. The verbal noun uses final yāʾ plus tanwīn fatḥ: تلقّيًا.

لم يتلق المختبر النتائج النهائية بعد.

lam yatalaqqa l-mukhtabaru n-natāʾija n-nihāʾiyyata baʿd.

The laboratory has not received the final results yet.

Hamzated تَهَيَّأَ — يَتَهَيَّأُ — تَهَيُّؤًا “get ready” (root ه-ي-أ) retains its lexical hamza, whose seat changes with the surrounding vowels. A first-root t can also create adjacent t letters: تَتَبَّعَ — يَتَتَبَّعُ — تَتَبُّعًا “track/follow closely” (root ت-ب-ع). Formal spelling does not erase the Form V prefix.

تهيأت الفرق للاستجابة لأي طارئ.

tahayyaʾati l-firaqu lil-istijābati li-ʾayyi ṭāriʾ.

The teams prepared to respond to any emergency. (Nonhuman plural agreement.)

Common Mistakes

Confusing Form V with Form II

❌ المعلم تعلم الطلاب القاعدة.

Incorrect for ‘the teacher taught’—تعلّم means ‘learn’; Form II علّم is transitive ‘teach.’

✅ علم المعلم الطلاب القاعدة ثم تدربوا عليها.

ʿallama l-muʿallimu ṭ-ṭullāba l-qāʿidata thumma tadarrabū ʿalayhā.

The teacher taught the students the rule, and then they practised it.

Treating initial t as hamzat al-waṣl

❌ اتعلم مريم تشغيل الجهاز.

Incorrect—Form V starts with ت, not an added initial alif: تعلمت مريم.

✅ تعلمت مريم تشغيل الجهاز بسرعة.

taʿallamat maryamu tashghīla l-jihāzi bisurʿa.

Maryam learned to operate the device quickly.

Dropping one of the two t's in careful agreement

❌ هي يتعلم اللغة العربية.

Incorrect agreement—the feminine singular imperfect is تتعلم, with person-prefix ت before the Form V ت.

✅ هي تتعلم العربية للعمل في قسم الترجمة.

hiya tataʿallamu l-ʿarabiyyata lil-ʿamali fī qismi t-tarjama.

She is learning Arabic to work in the translation department.

Using indicative after لم

❌ لم يتعلم الموظف النظام.

Incorrect if يتعلم is read with indicative -u—لم governs jussive يتعلمْ.

✅ لم يتعلم الموظف النظام القديم.

lam yataʿallami l-muwaẓẓafu n-niẓāma l-qadīm.

The employee did not learn the old system.

Regularizing a final-weak jussive

❌ لم يتلقى المختبر النتائج.

Incorrect in careful MSA—final-weak يتلقى loses ى in the singular jussive.

✅ لم يتلق المختبر النتائج حتى المساء.

lam yatalaqqa l-mukhtabaru n-natāʾija ḥattā l-masāʾ.

The laboratory did not receive the results until the evening.

Key Takeaways

  • Form V follows تَفَعَّلَ — يَتَفَعَّلُ — تَفَعُّلًا and retains its initial t.
  • It often relates to Form II through a middle, reflexive, result, or acquisition meaning.
  • Those meanings are lexical tendencies; complement patterns must be learned verb by verb.
  • Imperfect agreement prefixes attach before the Form V t, producing forms such as تتعلّم.
  • Final-weak and hamzated roots retain their verified special stem behavior.
