Form X Weak Verbs

Form X begins with استـ, but weak roots still reshape the rest of its stem. Final-weak اِسْتَدْعَى / يَسْتَدْعِي / اِسْتِدْعَاء, root د-ع-و, alternates among ى, ي, and اء and loses final yāʾ in the jussive. Hollow اِسْتَقَامَ / يَسْتَقِيمُ / اِسْتِقَامَة, root ق-و-م, has long and short stems. Common اِسْتَطَاعَ / يَسْتَطِيعُ / اِسْتِطَاعَة, root ط-و-ع, belongs to another hollow lexical family. Initial-wāw اِسْتَوْعَبَ / يَسْتَوْعِبُ / اِسْتِيعَاب, root و-ع-ب, retains wāw in its finite stems but reshapes the maṣdar.

These differences matter more than the broad meanings often associated with Form X. استدعى means “summon; require,” استقام “be straight; function properly,” استطاع “be able,” and استوعب “comprehend; accommodate.” Learn every verb with its attested meaning and complements, not as a mechanical translation of استـ. The general Form-X guide covers sound roots and broad semantic tendencies; the weak-derived-forms map compares this family with other Forms.

Final-weak استدعى: one family across aspect and mood

The principal parts of استدعى expose its final weakness:

CategoryFormBehavior
perfectاِسْتَدْعَىfinal alif maqṣūra
imperfect indicativeيَسْتَدْعِيfinal yāʾ; ḍamma is estimated
imperfect subjunctiveلَنْ يَسْتَدْعِيَyāʾ remains with overt fatḥa
imperfect jussiveلَمْ يَسْتَدْعِyāʾ is deleted
maṣdarاِسْتِدْعَاءfinal hamza after long ā
active participleمُسْتَدْعٍ / مُسْتَدْعِيdefective noun; form depends on definiteness and case
passive participleمُسْتَدْعًى“summoned; called for”

In the common legal or administrative sense, استدعى شخصًا takes the summoned person as a direct object. In an impersonal evaluative sense, استدعى الأمرُ إجراءً means “the matter required a measure.” English call can tempt learners to insert a preposition, but the ordinary Arabic frames here are transitive.

استدعت المحكمة الشاهدتين للإدلاء بشهادتيهما.

istadʿati l-maḥkamatu sh-shāhidaytayni lil-ʾidlāʾi bishahādatayhimā.

The court summoned the two women witnesses to give their testimony. (Formal, legal.)

استدعيت خبيرا مستقلا لمراجعة نظام الأمان.

istadʿaytu khabīran mustaqillan limurājaʿati niẓāmi l-ʾamān.

I called in an independent expert to review the safety system. (Perfect with a consonantal suffix.)

لن يستدعي المدير الشرطة ما دام الحوار ممكنا.

lan yastadʿiya l-mudīru sh-shurṭata mā dāma l-ḥiwāru mumkinan.

The director will not call the police as long as dialogue remains possible. (Subjunctive after لن.)

لم يستدع المدير الشرطة لأن الخلاف انتهى سريعا.

lam yastadʿi l-mudīru sh-shurṭata liʾanna l-khilāfa ntahā sarīʿan.

The director did not call the police because the dispute ended quickly. (Jussive yāʾ deletion.)

With subject-first dual agreement, the five-verb ending behaves regularly: المديرتان تستدعيان in the indicative, but لن تستدعيا and لم تستدعيا lose nūn. This is not the same operation as the final-yāʾ deletion in singular لم يستدعِ.

المديرتان لم تستدعيا أي موظف إلى جلسة المساء.

al-mudīratāni lam tastadʿiyā ʾayya muwaẓẓafin ʾilā jalsati l-masāʾ.

The two women directors did not summon any employee to the evening session. (Subject-first dual; nūn deletion.)

💡
Keep two jussive mechanisms apart: singular لم يستدعِ deletes the weak final yāʾ, while dual لم تستدعيا keeps the stem's yāʾ sequence and deletes the five-verb nūn.

Hollow استقام: long stems and short stems

اِسْتَقَامَ / يَسْتَقِيمُ / اِسْتِقَامَة, root ق-و-م, commonly means “be straight/upright” or, of a process, “run properly; become orderly.” The perfect shortens before consonantal suffixes: اِسْتَقَمْتُ، اِسْتَقَمْنَا، اِسْتَقَمْنَ. The imperfect keeps ī in indicative يستقيمُ and subjunctive لن يستقيمَ, but suffixless jussive is لم يستقمْ. The masculine-singular imperative is اِسْتَقِمْ.

استقام سير العمل بعد تحديث النظام وتدريب الموظفين.

istaqāma sayru l-ʿamali baʿda taḥdīthi n-niẓāmi wa-tadrībi l-muwaẓẓafīn.

The workflow ran properly after the system was updated and the staff were trained. (Formal.)

لم يستقم الخط رغم إعادة القياس مرتين.

lam yastaqimi l-khaṭṭu raghma ʾiʿādati l-qiyāsi marratayn.

The line did not become straight despite measuring it again twice. (Jussive short stem.)

استقم في تعاملك مع المتدربين، ولا تميز بينهم.

istaqim fī taʿāmulika maʿa l-mutadarribīna, wa-lā tumayyiz baynahum.

Be upright in your dealings with the trainees, and do not discriminate among them. (Addressing one man; formal/moral register.)

The moral use of استقام is (formal/religious); the process sense is ordinary formal prose. Register and collocation determine which translation is natural.

استطاع: a frequent hollow family with أن

اِسْتَطَاعَ / يَسْتَطِيعُ / اِسْتِطَاعَة, root ط-و-ع, means “be able; manage.” It commonly takes أن + subjunctive before a second verb. Its short forms are اِسْتَطَعْتُ in the perfect, لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ in the jussive, and اِسْتَطِعْ in the masculine-singular imperative. Do not substitute the i-stem of استقام mechanically: each hollow family has verified vowels.

استطاعت الباحثتان أن تكملا التحليل قبل الموعد.

istaṭāʿati l-bāḥithatāni ʾan tukmilā t-taḥlīla qabla l-mawʿid.

The two women researchers managed to complete the analysis before the deadline. (Neutral VSO; subjunctive after أن.)

لم يستطع الفريق أن يفسر الفرق بين النتيجتين.

lam yastaṭiʿi l-farīqu ʾan yufassira l-farqa bayna n-natījatayn.

The team was unable to explain the difference between the two results. (Jussive استطاع; subjunctive after أن.)

لن يستطيع المتدربون تشغيل الجهاز من دون بطاقة دخول.

lan yastaṭīʿa l-mutadarribūna tashghīla l-jihāzi min dūni biṭāqati dukhūl.

The trainees will not be able to operate the device without an access card. (Neutral VSO; subjunctive singular verb.)

Arabic may also use a maṣdar after استطاع in formal prose, but استطاع أن يفعل is the most transparent productive frame for learners. English can is an auxiliary; Arabic استطاع is a fully inflected lexical verb and has its own aspect, mood, and agreement.

💡
After استطاع أن, the first verb carries the clause's tense or mood, while أن governs the following verb in the subjunctive: لم يستطعْ أن يشرحَ. Do not put both verbs in the jussive.

Initial-wāw استوعب: the prefix protects the finite radical

Root و-ع-ب is initial-weak, but Form X اِسْتَوْعَبَ / يَسْتَوْعِبُ / اِسْتِيعَاب retains و in its finite stems because it follows استـ; it is not exposed like the first radical of Form-I وعد / يعد or assimilated to ت as in Form-VIII اتصل. The maṣdar استيعاب instead shows ي after the pattern's kasra. The verb means “comprehend” with a direct object and “accommodate; have capacity for” with a direct object.

استوعبت الطالبتان الفكرة بعد المثال الثاني.

istawʿabati ṭ-ṭālibatāni l-fikrata baʿda l-mithāli th-thānī.

The two students understood the idea after the second example. (Neutral VSO.)

لا يستوعب المبنى أكثر من مئتي زائر في الوقت نفسه.

lā yastawʿibu l-mabnā ʾakthara min miʾatay zāʾirin fī l-waqti nafsih.

The building cannot accommodate more than two hundred visitors at the same time.

المشاركون لم يستوعبوا التعليمات لأن الترجمة كانت ناقصة.

al-mushārikūna lam yastawʿibū t-taʿlīmāti liʾanna t-tarjamata kānat nāqiṣa.

The participants did not understand the instructions because the translation was incomplete. (Subject-first full plural agreement.)

This contrast is especially useful: Form VIII can assimilate initial wāw to its adjacent ت, while Form X has enough prefixal material to preserve wāw in استوعب. That is a pattern comparison, not permission to predict every initial-wāw maṣdar without verification.

Hamzat al-waṣl and connected speech

The initial alif of Form X carries hamzat al-waṣl. It is pronounced at the start: اِسْتَدْعَى istadʿā. After a preceding vowel, the support vowel and glottal onset disappear: ثم استدعى thumma stadʿā. The alif remains written.

راجع الطبيب النتائج ثم استدعى المريض لمناقشتها.

rājaʿa ṭ-ṭabību n-natāʾija thumma stadʿā l-marīḍa limunāqashatihā.

The doctor reviewed the results and then called the patient in to discuss them. (Connected hamzat al-waṣl.)

Common Mistakes

Keeping final yāʾ after لم

❌ لم يستدعي المدير المستشارتين.

Incorrect in careful MSA—the singular final-weak jussive deletes ي: يستدعِ.

✅ لم يستدع المدير المستشارتين.

lam yastadʿi l-mudīru l-mustashāratayn.

The director did not summon the two women consultants.

Dropping yāʾ from the subjunctive

❌ لن يستدع المدير الشرطة.

Incorrect—the final weak letter remains in the subjunctive: لن يستدعيَ.

✅ لن يستدعي المدير الشرطة.

lan yastadʿiya l-mudīru sh-shurṭa.

The director will not call the police.

Keeping a hollow long vowel in the jussive

❌ لم يستطيع الفريق إكمال الاختبار.

Incorrect in careful MSA—the hollow jussive is يستطع.

✅ لم يستطع الفريق إكمال الاختبار.

lam yastaṭiʿi l-farīqu ʾikmāla l-ikhtibār.

The team could not complete the test.

Deleting initial wāw from استوعب

❌ استعبت الطالبة الفكرة.

Incorrect—the initial root و remains in the finite Form-X stem: استوعبت.

✅ استوعبت الطالبة الفكرة.

istawʿabati ṭ-ṭālibatu l-fikra.

The student understood the idea.

Giving a neutral VSO clause full dual agreement

❌ استطاعتا الباحثتان إكمال التحليل.

Incorrect in neutral formal VSO—use singular feminine استطاعت before the overt dual subject.

✅ استطاعت الباحثتان إكمال التحليل.

istaṭāʿati l-bāḥithatāni ʾikmāla t-taḥlīl.

The two women researchers managed to complete the analysis.

Key Takeaways

  • Final-weak استدعى has يستدعي، لن يستدعيَ, but jussive لم يستدعِ and maṣdar استدعاء.
  • Hollow استقام and استطاع use long stems in ordinary finite forms and short stems before consonantal suffixes, in the singular jussive, and in the command.
  • Initial-wāw استوعب preserves و in finite stems but has maṣdar استيعاب.
  • Form-X hamzat al-waṣl is pronounced utterance-initially and elided after a preceding vowel.
  • Meaning and complementation are lexical: استدعى شخصًا، استطاع أن يفعل، استوعب فكرةً.
