Verbal Nouns of Weak Verbs

A maṣdar (مَصْدَر) names an action, process, state, or result without marking tense or person. Weak roots do not create one special “weak maṣdar pattern.” In Form I, the maṣdar is lexical and must be verified with the verb: قَالَ / يَقُولُ / قَوْل “say / saying,” وَصَلَ / يَصِلُ / وُصُول “arrive / arrival,” and سَعَى / يَسْعَى / سَعْي “strive / striving” belong to different noun patterns.

Derived Forms are more predictable, but the weak radical still changes the expected surface shape. Final-weak Form II سَمَّى has تَسْمِيَة, hollow Form IV أَقَامَ has إِقَامَة, and final-weak Form X اِسْتَدْعَى has اِسْتِدْعَاء. These are attested morphological families, not forms to guess from an English gloss. The general maṣdar-pattern map supplies the strong-root baseline.

Form I: learn the maṣdar as a principal part

Form I supplies many common maṣdar patterns, and the imperfect vowel does not select one reliably. Weakness makes the family resemblance visible in different places: a wāw or yāʾ may remain as a consonant, appear inside a diphthong, surface as a long vowel, or disappear from one finite stem while remaining in the noun.

Verified Form-I setRoot classMaṣdarMeaning

The contrast وَعْد / وُصُول proves why “initial-wāw verb” is not a maṣdar generator. Likewise, قَوْل and بَيْع preserve different diphthongs. A learner must record the noun alongside the perfect and imperfect rather than inventing it later.

muniʿa ramyu n-nufāyāti fī n-nahri baʿda talawwuthi l-miyāh.

The maṣdar is a noun. In رميُ النفاياتِ, it is nominative as the passive subject of مُنِعَ, construct before genitive النفاياتِ, and not marked for the time or identity of the person dumping. English dumping looks verbal, but the Arabic construction has ordinary noun syntax.

💡
For Form I, make every vocabulary entry a three-part set: perfect, imperfect, and verified maṣdar. Root class helps you recognize relationships; it does not predict whether the noun will be وعد، وصول، قول، بيع، رمي, or something else.

One verb can have lexically distinct maṣdars

Form I دَعَا / يَدْعُو, root د-ع-و, illustrates why even a verified root may need more than one noun. دَعْوَة commonly means an invitation, a call, or an appeal according to context. دُعَاء means supplication or prayer (formal/religious). They overlap historically but are not interchangeable in ordinary modern usage; دَعْوَى “claim; allegation” is a different noun and should not be confused with دَعْوَة.

rafaʿa l-ḥāḍirūna ʾaydiyahum bid-duʿāʾi lil-muṣābīn.

Those present raised their hands in prayer for the injured. (Formal/religious.)

This is lexical meaning, not free stylistic variation. A dictionary may list several Form-I maṣdars because different senses, registers, or conventional uses have become established.

Weak maṣdars keep verbal complement frames

A maṣdar can retain the semantic participants and prepositions of its verb. سَعَى إلى “strive for” gives سَعْي إلى; دَعَا إلى “call for/invite to” gives دَعْوَة إلى in the relevant sense; رَمَى شيئا في مكان gives رَمْي شيء في مكان. The maṣdar itself still declines as a noun.

English often packages these relationships with of, to, or a possessive. Arabic distinguishes the maṣdar's iḍāfa dependents from its selected prepositional complements.

Derived Forms: predictable frames with real weak adjustments

For a strong root, Form II normally has تَفْعِيل, Form III مُفَاعَلَة, Form IV إِفْعَال, Form VIII اِفْتِعَال, and Form X اِسْتِفْعَال. Weak roots adapt these frames in recurring ways, but the attested surface word still needs verification.

Several hollow and final-weak patterns use tāʾ marbūṭa: تسمية، تربية، مناداة، إقامة، إدارة، استقامة. This ending does not make the event semantically feminine. It is part of the noun pattern that resolves the weak stem. Other weak maṣdars use final hamza, as in إلقاء، إعطاء، استدعاء, or retain yāʾ inside a long frame, as in اختيار. There is no rule that every weak derived verb must end in ة.

tatawallā l-muhandisatāni ʾidārata l-mashrūʿayni khilāla l-marḥalati l-ʾūlā.

In pausal إدارة the tāʾ marbūṭa is heard as -a. In construct إدارةُ المشروع or accusative إدارةَ المشروع, it is pronounced t and carries case. Learners who know only the pause form often fail to pronounce this link.

💡
When a weak derived maṣdar ends in ة, treat it as a full tāʾ marbūṭa noun: pause with -a, but pronounce t before case or an iḍāfa complement. The ending is morphology, not a gender label for the action.

Hamza and hamzat al-waṣl are part of the spelling

Form IV maṣdars begin with hamzat al-qaṭʿ below alif: إِقَامَة، إِدَارَة، إِلْقَاء، إِعْطَاء. Forms VIII and X begin with hamzat al-waṣl: اِخْتِيَار، اِسْتِقَامَة، اِسْتِدْعَاء. Their alif remains in writing but the supporting vowel is elided after a preceding vowel in connected speech.

Key Takeaways

  • Form-I weak maṣdars are lexical: record وعد، وصول، قول، بيع، رمي، سعي with their verbs.
  • One Form-I verb can have multiple conventional nouns, as دعوة and دعاء demonstrate.
  • Derived Forms narrow the possibilities, but weak roots produce verified adjustments such as تسمية، مناداة، إقامة, and استدعاء.
  • Tāʾ marbūṭa is pronounced t with case or in iḍāfa; it does not make an event semantically feminine.
  • Preserve Form-IV hamzat al-qaṭʿ and distinguish it from hamzat al-waṣl in Forms VIII and X.
