Forms VII and VIII as Middle-Voice Strategies

Arabic Forms VII and VIII often supply middle-voice strategies: the clause presents an event through a subject that changes state, is affected, or participates in the event without a separately expressed external agent. Form VII اِنْكَسَرَ الزجاج “the glass broke” is the clearest example. Form VIII اِحْتَرَقَ المبنى “the building burned down” can organize participants similarly.

“Middle” is a description of event structure, not a promise that every Form VII or VIII verb has the same meaning. Form VII is strongly associated with intransitive results. Form VIII covers a much wider lexical range, including intransitive change, reciprocal participation, and ordinary transitive verbs such as اكتشف “discover.” Neither Form is equivalent to the English passive.

The individual Form VII and Form VIII pages give their full shapes and sound changes; this page compares the two as event-structure choices.

Three constructions English may translate with a passive

Compare a transitive active, an internal passive, and a Form VII middle from root ك-س-ر:

ConstructionArabicWhat the clause asserts
active Form Iكَسَرَ العاملُ الزجاجَan agent acted on an object
internal passive Form Iكُسِرَ الزجاجُa breaking action affected the passive subject; agent suppressed
active Form VII middleاِنْكَسَرَ الزجاجُthe subject entered the broken state / underwent the event

كسر العامل الزجاج أثناء إزالة الإطار.

kasara l-ʿāmilu z-zujāja ʾathnāʾa ʾizālati l-ʾiṭār.

The worker broke the glass while removing the frame. (Formal active.)

كسر الزجاج أثناء نقل النافذة.

kusira z-zujāju ʾathnāʾa naqli n-nāfidha.

The glass was broken while the window was being moved. (Formal internal passive.)

انكسر الزجاج عندما اشتدت الريح.

inkasara z-zujāju ʿindamā shtaddati r-rīḥ.

The glass broke when the wind grew stronger. (Formal Form VII middle.)

The passive preserves a transitive event while withholding its agent. Form VII lexicalizes an intransitive event whose sole core participant is الزجاج. A natural English translation may use “was broken” for either Arabic sentence, so translation alone cannot identify the grammar.

💡
Ask whether Arabic has promoted the object of a transitive verb in an internal passive, or selected a separate intransitive lexeme. كُسِرَ and انكسر can describe similar situations but make different grammatical commitments.

Form VII profiles an affected subject or result

The sound pattern is اِنْفَعَلَ / يَنْفَعِلُ / اِنْفِعَال. The initial alif carries hamzat al-waṣl; the n belongs to the derived stem. Common result verbs include اِنْفَتَحَ / يَنْفَتِحُ / اِنْفِتَاحًا “open, become open,” اِنْقَطَعَ / يَنْقَطِعُ / اِنْقِطَاعًا “be cut off; cease,” and اِنْخَفَضَ / يَنْخَفِضُ / اِنْخِفَاضًا “fall; decrease.”

inkhafaḍati t-takālīfu baʿda taḥdīthi niẓāmi t-tawzīʿ.

Costs fell after the distribution system was updated. (Formal; nonhuman plural with feminine-singular agreement.)

Middle does not mean “spontaneous.” A Form VII event may have an identifiable cause: wind opens the door; a policy lowers costs; an accident breaks a part. The Form merely leaves that cause outside the verb's core agent–object frame. It may be added as a causal phrase or in another clause.

Form VII also has lexical restrictions. Roots beginning with ء، و، ي، ر، ل، or ن do not regularly enter it, and initial م is uncommon. When an attested Form VII is absent, formal Arabic may use Form VIII, Form V, a different verb, or the grammatical passive. Do not prefix انـ mechanically.

Form VIII can also center the affected or participating subject

Form VIII has اِفْتَعَلَ / يَفْتَعِلُ / اِفْتِعَال, with t after the first radical. Its middle uses are lexical, not uniform. اِحْتَرَقَ / يَحْتَرِقُ / اِحْتِرَاقًا “burn; burn down,” root ح-ر-ق, contrasts with transitive Form I حَرَقَ “burn something.” اِرْتَفَعَ / يَرْتَفِعُ / اِرْتِفَاعًا “rise,” root ر-ف-ع, presents the rising entity as subject. اِنْتَشَرَ / يَنْتَشِرُ / اِنْتِشَارًا “spread,” root ن-ش-ر, is Form VIII despite beginning انتـ: ن is the first radical and ت is the Form VIII marker.

intashara l-khabaru ʿabra l-minaṣṣāti qabla ṣudūri l-bayāni r-rasmiyy.

The news spread across the platforms before the official statement was issued. (Formal media register.)

Form VIII is not inherently intransitive. اكتشف الباحث الخطأ “the researcher discovered the error” is transitive, and اعتمدت اللجنة الخطة “the committee adopted the plan” is transitive. A middle analysis belongs to particular lexemes, not to the Form as a whole.

Several families show Forms VII and VIII dividing meanings rather than competing as interchangeable voices.

ك-ش-ف: becoming revealed versus discovering

Form VII اِنْكَشَفَ / يَنْكَشِفُ / اِنْكِشَافًا means “become exposed; be revealed.” Form VIII اِكْتَشَفَ / يَكْتَشِفُ / اِكْتِشَافًا is transitive “discover.” The first makes what becomes visible the subject; the second makes the discoverer subject and the discovery object.

انكشف سبب الخلل بعد مراجعة سجل النظام.

inkashafa sababu l-khalali baʿda murājaʿati sijilli n-niẓām.

The cause of the fault became clear after the system log was reviewed. (Formal Form VII.)

اكتشفت المهندستان سبب الخلل في سجل النظام.

iktashafati l-muhandisatāni sababa l-khalali fī sijilli n-niẓām.

The two female engineers discovered the cause of the fault in the system log. (Formal VSO; Form VIII.)

ف-ت-ح: opening versus inaugurating

Form VII انفتح is the intransitive “open.” Form VIII اِفْتَتَحَ / يَفْتَتِحُ / اِفْتِتَاحًا normally means “inaugurate; formally open; open proceedings” and is often transitive. Choosing Form VIII does not merely make انفتح more formal.

انفتح الباب بعد إصلاح القفل، وافتتحت المديرة المعرض في المساء.

infataḥa l-bābu baʿda ʾiṣlāḥi l-qufli, wa-ftataḥati l-mudīratu l-maʿriḍa fī l-masāʾ.

The door opened after the lock was repaired, and the director inaugurated the exhibition that evening. (Formal Form VII/Form VIII contrast.)

ق-ط-ع: interruption versus extraction or allocation

Form VII انقطع means “be interrupted; cease.” Form VIII اِقْتَطَعَ / يَقْتَطِعُ / اِقْتِطَاعًا is transitive “cut out; deduct; set aside.” Their shared root does not make them a voice pair.

💡
When two Forms coexist in one root family, compare their subjects and objects before comparing translations. The participant frame often reveals a sharper contrast than the shared root does.

Agreement, mood, and irregular stems remain active

Sound derived verbs take ordinary imperfect moods: لن ينكشفَ / لم ينكشفْ and لن يكتشفَ / لم يكتشفْ. In VSO, the verb is normally singular before an overt human dual or plural subject. With a subject first, use full agreement.

لن تنضم الباحثتان إلى المشروع قبل مراجعة شروطه.

lan tanḍamma l-bāḥithatāni ʾilā l-mashrūʿi qabla murājaʿati shurūṭih.

The two female researchers will not join the project before reviewing its terms. (Geminate Form VII; singular VSO verb.)

الباحثتان لم تنضما إلى المشروع.

al-bāḥithatāni lam tanḍammā ʾilā l-mashrūʿ.

The two female researchers did not join the project. (Subject-first dual agreement.)

Root shape can obscure the pattern. Hollow Form VII اِنْقَادَ / يَنْقَادُ / اِنْقِيَادًا “yield; comply,” root ق-و-د, has jussive لم ينقدْ. Final-weak Form VIII اِتَّقَى / يَتَّقِي / اِتِّقَاءً “guard against,” root و-ق-ي, has jussive لم يتقِ. Geminate Form VIII اِمْتَدَّ / يَمْتَدُّ / اِمْتِدَادًا, root م-د-د, contracts its last two radicals under shadda.

لم يتق الفريق مخاطر التسرب في التصميم الأول.

lam yattaqi l-farīqu makhāṭira t-tasarrubi fī t-taṣmīmi l-ʾawwal.

The team did not guard against leakage risks in the first design. (Final-weak Form VIII jussive.)

Common Mistakes

Treating Form VII as an English passive

❌ انكسر الفني اللوح.

Incorrect—Form VII انكسر is intransitive; it cannot take an agent subject and an affected object.

✅ كسر الفني اللوح، فانكسر إلى قسمين.

kasara l-fanniyyu l-lawḥa, fa-nkasara ʾilā qismayn.

The technician broke the panel, and it broke into two pieces.

Assuming every Form VIII verb is middle or intransitive

❌ الخطأ اكتشف نفسه من دون باحث.

Incorrect analysis—اكتشف is normally transitive ‘discover,’ with a discoverer as subject and the discovery as object; الخطأ cannot be recast as a self-discovering middle subject.

✅ اكتشفت الباحثة الخطأ أثناء المراجعة.

iktashafati l-bāḥithatu l-khaṭaʾa ʾathnāʾa l-murājaʿa.

The researcher discovered the error during the review.

Treating coexisting Forms as synonyms

❌ افتتح الباب تلقائيا عند اقترابي.

Incorrect for an ordinary door opening by itself—افتتح means ‘inaugurate/formally open’ here; use انفتح.

✅ انفتح الباب تلقائيا عند اقترابي.

infataḥa l-bābu tilqāʾiyyan ʿinda qtirābī.

The door opened automatically as I approached.

Misclassifying every انتـ verb as Form VII

❌ انتشر من الصيغة السابعة وجذره ش-ر-ر.

Incorrect—انتشر is Form VIII from root ن-ش-ر; ن is R1 and ت is the Form VIII marker.

✅ انتشر الإعلان في الجامعات خلال يوم واحد.

intashara l-ʾiʿlānu fī l-jāmiʿāti khilāla yawmin wāḥid.

The announcement spread through the universities within one day.

Regularizing a final-weak jussive

❌ لم يتقي الفريق المخاطر.

Incorrect in careful MSA—final-weak يتقي loses ي after jussive لم.

✅ لم يتق الفريق المخاطر في المرحلة الأولى.

lam yattaqi l-farīqu l-makhāṭira fī l-marḥalati l-ʾūlā.

The team did not guard against the risks in the first phase.

Key Takeaways

  • Form VII commonly makes an affected or changing participant the subject of an intransitive lexical verb.
  • Form VIII has middle uses, but also reciprocal, specialized, and fully transitive lexemes.
  • A middle verb differs from an internal passive: it reorganizes the lexical event rather than merely suppressing an agent.
  • Related Forms can coexist with sharply different meanings and valency.
  • Agreement, mood, hamzat al-waṣl, weak letters, and gemination still follow the verified principal parts of each verb.
