Forms V and VI: Reflexive and Reciprocal Networks

Form V تَفَعَّلَ and Form VI تَفَاعَلَ are often introduced as the “reflexive of Form II” and the “reciprocal of Form III.” Those relationships are valuable, but they describe networks of tendencies rather than automatic meanings. علّم “teach” relates transparently to تعلّم “learn,” and ناقش “discuss” relates to reciprocal تناقش “discuss with one another.” Yet Form V تكلّم simply means “speak,” while Form VI تجاهل means “ignore,” not “be mutually ignorant.”

The key is participant structure. Ask who acts, who changes, whether several participants act toward one another, and whether the verb retains an object or requires a preposition. Then verify the lexeme's perfect, imperfect, maṣdar, and normal complements.

Review the individual Form V and Form VI paradigms for basic recognition; here the focus is how their participant networks overlap and diverge.

The two patterns

Form V adds initial t to the doubled-middle shape of Form II: تَفَعَّلَ / يَتَفَعَّلُ / تَفَعُّل. Form VI adds initial t to the long-ā shape of Form III: تَفَاعَلَ / يَتَفَاعَلُ / تَفَاعُل. This initial t is a pronounced derivational consonant, not hamzat al-waṣl.

FormModel principal partsFrequent participant tendency
Vتَعَلَّمَ / يَتَعَلَّمُ / تَعَلُّمsubject acquires or undergoes a result associated with Form II
VIتَعَاوَنَ / يَتَعَاوَنُ / تَعَاوُنtwo or more participants contribute to a shared event

taʿallamati l-muwaẓẓafatu stikhdāma n-niẓāmi khilāla yawmayn.

The employee learned to use the system within two days. (Formal Form V.)

تعاون المركز مع الجامعة على تنظيم الندوة.

taʿāwana l-markazu maʿa l-jāmiʿati ʿalā tanẓīmi n-nadwa.

The center cooperated with the university to organize the seminar. (Formal Form VI.)

💡
Form V and Form VI suggest questions—“Does the subject undergo the result?” “Are several participants involved?”—but only the lexical verb and its complements supply the answer.

Form V: reflexive, middle, or acquisition readings

In a transparent Form II/Form V pair, the participant affected by Form II becomes the Form V subject. طَوَّرَ / يُطَوِّرُ / تَطْوِيرًا “develop something” contrasts with تَطَوَّرَ / يَتَطَوَّرُ / تَطَوُّرًا “develop; evolve.” حَسَّنَ “improve something” contrasts with تَحَسَّنَ “improve, become better.” These are middle or change-of-state relationships, not necessarily deliberate actions done “to oneself.”

طورت الوزارة المنصة، فتطورت خدماتها تدريجيا.

ṭawwarati l-wizāratu l-minaṣṣata, fataṭawwarat khidamātuhā tadrījiyyan.

The ministry developed the platform, and its services gradually improved. (Formal Form II/Form V contrast.)

taḥassanati n-natāʾiju baʿda taʿdīli ʾasʾilati l-ikhtibār.

The results improved after the test questions were revised. (Formal; nonhuman plural agreement.)

A genuinely self-directed reading is possible. تَزَيَّنَ / يَتَزَيَّنُ / تَزَيُّنًا “adorn oneself; dress up,” root ز-ي-ن, presents the subject as undertaking and experiencing the preparation. Even here, English oneself is a possible translation, not an Arabic object that must be added.

تزينت القاعة بالأضواء قبل وصول الضيوف.

tazayyanati l-qāʿatu bil-ʾaḍwāʾi qabla wuṣūli ḍ-ḍuyūf.

The hall was decorated with lights before the guests arrived. (Formal; middle result, not a conscious reflexive action.)

The same verb shape can accommodate an inanimate subject and a human subject because “reflexive” is only one corner of a broader middle network.

Form V can keep a direct object

Subject-centered meaning does not force intransitivity. تَذَكَّرَ / يَتَذَكَّرُ / تَذَكُّرًا “remember” takes the remembered item directly. تَحَمَّلَ / يَتَحَمَّلُ / تَحَمُّلًا “bear; assume” takes a burden or responsibility directly. تَعَلَّمَ takes a field, skill, or verbal noun.

تذكرت الطبيبتان نتيجة الفحص قبل مغادرة العيادة.

tadhakkarati ṭ-ṭabībatāni natījata l-faḥṣi qabla mughādarati l-ʿiyāda.

The two female doctors remembered the test result before leaving the clinic. (Formal VSO.)

taḥammala l-farīqu masʾūliyyata t-taʾkhīri wawaʿada bitaṣḥīḥi l-khalal.

The team accepted responsibility for the delay and promised to correct the fault. (Formal.)

Do not add نفسه or a preposition by analogy with English. The verb's own valency decides.

Iteration and distributed effect in Form V

Form V can profile repeated, gradual, or distributed realization of the meaning associated with a doubled stem. تَكَسَّرَ / يَتَكَسَّرُ / تَكَسُّرًا often means “shatter; break into pieces.” تَتَبَّعَ / يَتَتَبَّعُ / تَتَبُّعًا, root ت-ب-ع, means “trace; follow closely,” often step by step. Iteration is a common interpretation, not an obligatory component in every Form V verb.

tatabbaʿati ṣ-ṣaḥafiyyatu masāra l-ʾamwāli ʿabra ʿiddati sharikāt.

The journalist traced the flow of funds through several companies. (Formal investigative register.)

Form VI: reciprocity is a participant configuration

Reciprocal Form VI requires at least two semantic participants, but syntax can package them in different ways. A plural or dual subject may contain all parties: تفاوض الطرفان “the two parties negotiated.” A singular subject may name one party while مع introduces the other: تفاوض المندوب مع الشركة. The verb need not carry an object meaning “each other.”

تَعَاوَنَ / يَتَعَاوَنُ / تَعَاوُنًا normally uses مع for a partner and على for a task. تَفَاوَضَ / يَتَفَاوَضُ / تَفَاوُضًا often uses مع for the other party and حول or بشأن for the issue. تَبَادَلَ / يَتَبَادَلُ / تَبَادُلًا takes the exchanged item directly.

تفاوضت النقابة مع الإدارة بشأن ساعات العمل.

tafāwaḍati n-niqābatu maʿa l-ʾidārati bishaʾni sāʿāti l-ʿamal.

The union negotiated with management about working hours. (Formal.)

تبادلت الباحثتان الملاحظات قبل إرسال المقال.

tabādalati l-bāḥithatāni l-mulāḥaẓāti qabla ʾirsāli l-maqāl.

The two female researchers exchanged comments before submitting the article. (Formal VSO.)

المحررتان تبادلتا المسودات عبر البريد الآمن.

al-muḥarriratāni tabādalatā l-musawwadāti ʿabra l-barīdi l-ʾāmin.

The two female editors exchanged drafts through the secure mail system. (Subject-first dual agreement.)

The last two examples instantiate the same reciprocal configuration—co-participants bundled into one dual subject—though they describe different exchanges. Their agreement differs because the first has verb–subject order and the second has subject–verb order.

💡
For a reciprocal verb, record how the co-participants enter the clause: together in a plural subject, separately through مع, or as a direct object frame. The label “reciprocal” does not choose among them.

Form VI also expresses gradual processes and lexical actions

تَزَايَدَ / يَتَزَايَدُ / تَزَايُدًا “increase progressively” and تَنَاقَصَ / يَتَنَاقَصُ / تَنَاقُصًا “decrease progressively” describe unfolding processes, not participants acting on one another. تَجَاهَلَ / يَتَجَاهَلُ / تَجَاهُلًا “ignore” is transitive. تَنَاوَلَ / يَتَنَاوَلُ / تَنَاوُلًا means “take; consume” or, in academic prose, “address a topic.”

تزايد الطلب على النقل العام خلال أشهر الصيف.

Demand for public transport increased over the summer months. (Formal.)

تجاهل المجلس اعتراضات الخبراء الواردة في الملحق.

tajāhala l-majlisu ʿtirāḍāti l-khubarāʾi l-wāridata fī l-mulḥaq.

tanāwala t-taqrīru ʾathara rtifāʿi l-ʾasʿāri ʿalā l-ʾusari maḥdūdati d-dakhl.

The report addressed the effect of rising prices on low-income families. (Academic.)

Calling تجاهل reciprocal or translating تناولت الدراسة as physical taking would mistake a historical pattern tendency for current lexical syntax.

Mood, agreement, and irregular roots

Both Forms take ordinary imperfect mood marking. Sound يتعلّمُ and يتعاونُ are indicative; after لن they become يتعلّمَ، يتعاونَ; after لم, يتعلّمْ، يتعاونْ. Feminine-plural -نَ is mood-invariant, while the five verbs lose nūn in the subjunctive and jussive.

لن تتعاون الجامعتان قبل اعتماد خطة البحث.

lan tataʿāwana l-jāmiʿatāni qabla ʿtimādi khuṭṭati l-baḥth.

The two universities will not cooperate before the research plan is approved. (Formal VSO; subjunctive.)

Root shape must still be learned. Final-weak Form V تَلَقَّى / يَتَلَقَّى / تَلَقِّيًا “receive” has jussive لم يتلقَّ. Final-weak Form VI تَنَامَى / يَتَنَامَى / تَنَامِيًا “grow progressively” has لم يتنامَ. Hamzated Form VI تَسَاءَلَ / يَتَسَاءَلُ / تَسَاؤُلًا changes the hamza seat in its maṣdar.

لم يتلق المركز النسخة المصححة حتى المساء.

lam yatalaqqa l-markazu n-nuskhata l-muṣaḥḥaḥata ḥattā l-masāʾ.

The center did not receive the corrected copy until evening. (Final-weak Form V jussive.)

لم يتنام الدعم للمبادرة بالسرعة المتوقعة.

lam yatanāma d-daʿmu lil-mubādarati bis-surʿati l-mutawaqqaʿa.

Support for the initiative did not grow at the expected rate. (Final-weak Form VI jussive.)

Common Mistakes

Translating every Form V with “oneself”

❌ «نفسها» مفعول به لازم بعد «تعلمت» لأن الصيغة الخامسة انعكاسية.

Incorrect analysis—تعلّم already means ‘learn,’ so no reflexive object is required; in تعلمت الموظفة نفسها النظام, نفسها would instead naturally emphasize ‘the employee herself.’

✅ تعلمت الموظفة النظام خلال الدورة.

taʿallamati l-muwaẓẓafatu n-niẓāma khilāla d-dawra.

The employee learned the system during the course.

Making every Form V verb intransitive

❌ تذكر المهندس عن رمز الدخول.

Incorrect—تذكر takes the remembered item directly.

✅ تذكرت الطبيبة الموعد قبل نهاية الدوام.

tadhakkarati ṭ-ṭabībatu l-mawʿida qabla nihāyati d-dawām.

The doctor remembered the appointment before the workday ended.

Assuming every Form VI verb means “each other”

❌ الجملة «تجاهلت الإدارة التحذير» تعني أن طرفين تجاهل أحدهما الآخر.

Incorrect analysis—تجاهل is a one-sided transitive verb ‘ignore’ in this sentence, not a reciprocal event between two parties.

✅ تجاهل المسؤول التنبيه رغم تكراره.

tajāhala l-masʾūlu t-tanbīha raghma takrārih.

The official ignored the alert although it was repeated.

Copying one preposition across reciprocal verbs

❌ تبادل المحررون مع المسودات.

Incorrect—تبادل takes the exchanged item directly; مع may introduce a partner separately.

✅ تبادل المحررون المسودات مع المؤلفين.

tabādala l-muḥarrirūna l-musawwadāti maʿa l-muʾallifīn.

The editors exchanged drafts with the authors. (Formal VSO.)

Regularizing final-weak jussives

❌ لم يتلقى المختبر النتائج، ولم يتنامى الوعي.

Incorrect in careful MSA—final-weak يتلقى and يتنامى lose their final weak letter after لم.

✅ لم يتلق المختبر النتائج، ولم يتنام الوعي بالمشكلة.

lam yatalaqqa l-mukhtabaru n-natāʾija, wa-lam yatanāma l-waʿyu bil-mushkila.

The laboratory did not receive the results, and awareness of the problem did not grow.

Key Takeaways

  • Form V often presents acquisition, self-directed action, a middle result, or a distributed process; it can still take a direct object.
  • Form VI often organizes reciprocal participants, but each verb chooses its own subject, object, and prepositional frames.
  • Gradual and fully lexicalized Form VI meanings are common and need not be reciprocal.
  • Iterative readings are tendencies of particular verbs, not automatic meanings of the templates.
  • Agreement, mood, weak roots, hamza, and gemination remain part of the verified principal parts.
