The central meaning of مع (maʿa) is accompaniment: one participant, event, or circumstance is present alongside another. People travel together, a document comes with an attachment, and one change unfolds together with another. From this concrete relation, Modern Standard Arabic develops meanings of interaction, agreement, alignment, simultaneity, and temporary possession.
English with is much broader: it can introduce a companion, an instrument, a manner, a body part, or a cause. Arabic distributes those roles among مع, بـ, and other constructions. Use مع when “alongside/together with” captures the relation—not merely whenever English happens to say with.
For the suffix patterns shared by relational words, see Pronoun Suffixes after Prepositions. This page remains self-contained about معه، معها، معي.
Accompaniment: together with someone or something
Use مع for a companion who participates in, accompanies, or is present during an event. It is followed by a genitive noun. Traditional analysis often treats مَعَ as a relational noun or adverb in an iḍāfa-like structure; for learners, the practical result is the same as after a preposition: the following noun is genitive.
ذهبت مع زميلتي إلى المكتبة بعد المحاضرة.
dhahabtu maʿa zamīlatī ʾilā l-maktabati baʿda l-muḥāḍara.
I went with my colleague to the library after the lecture.
أحضر الضيف معه نسخة موقعة من كتابه.
ʾaḥḍara ḍ-ḍayfu maʿahu nuskhatan muwaqqaʿatan min kitābih.
The guest brought along a signed copy of his book.
سافر الفريق مع معداته الطبية إلى المنطقة النائية.
sāfara l-farīqu maʿa muʿaddātihi ṭ-ṭibbiyyati ʾilā l-minṭiqati n-nāʾiya.
The team traveled with its medical equipment to the remote area.
The companion need not be human, but it remains an accompanying entity rather than an instrument. فتحت العلبة بالمفتاح means “I opened the box with the key,” where the key is the instrument. ذهبت مع المفتاح would mean “I went with the key,” treating it as something taken along.
Accompaniment versus coordination
Coordination with و gives two participants equal syntactic status. A phrase with مع profiles one participant and presents the other as their companion. The real-world event may be similar, but the information structure differs.
| Construction | Arabic | Perspective |
|---|---|---|
| coordination | سَتَحْضُرُ لَيْلَى وَسَلْمَى | Layla and Salma are equal coordinated participants |
| accompaniment | سَتَحْضُرُ لَيْلَى مَعَ سَلْمَى | Layla is profiled; Salma accompanies her |
ستحضر ليلى وسلمى الاجتماع، وستقدمان التقرير معا.
sataḥḍuru laylā wa-salmā l-ijtimāʿa, wa-satuqaddimāni t-taqrīra maʿan.
Layla and Salma will attend the meeting, and they will present the report together.
ستحضر ليلى مع سلمى، لكنها ستقدم التقرير وحدها.
sataḥḍuru laylā maʿa salmā, lakinnahā satuqaddimu t-taqrīra waḥdahā.
Layla will attend with Salma, but she will present the report alone.
The second sentence does not make Salma a second grammatical subject of ستحضر. This matters for pronoun reference and agreement. In the first example, the verb precedes the coordinated names, so formal Arabic commonly leaves it singular feminine in agreement with the first named subject; the later verb has no following explicit subject and therefore carries dual ـان. Do not use مع merely to avoid learning dual or plural agreement where two equal subjects are intended.
Interaction, agreement, and opposition
Many reciprocal or interactive predicates select مع: تحدث مع “talked with,” اجتمع مع “met with,” تعاون مع “cooperated with,” تعامل مع “dealt with,” اتفق مع “agreed with,” and اختلف مع “disagreed with.” The participants stand in a relation to each other rather than one simply receiving an object.
اجتمعت الوزيرة مع ممثلي النقابات صباح اليوم.
ijtamaʿati l-wazīratu maʿa mumaththilī n-niqābāti ṣabāḥa l-yawm.
The minister met with union representatives this morning. (Formal.)
أتفق معك في الهدف، لكنني أختلف معك في الطريقة.
ʾattafiqu maʿaka fī l-hadafi, lakinnanī ʾakhtalifu maʿaka fī ṭ-ṭarīqa.
I agree with you on the goal, but I disagree with you about the method.
تعاونت الجامعة مع المستشفى لتدريب طلاب الطب.
taʿāwanati l-jāmiʿatu maʿa l-mustashfā litadrībi ṭullābi ṭ-ṭibb.
The university cooperated with the hospital to train medical students.
Verb choice still matters. قال للمدير means “said/told the director,” profiling an addressee; تحدث مع المدير means “talked with the director,” profiling interaction. English talked to can describe the second situation, but its to does not force Arabic إلى or لـ.
Simultaneity and changing circumstances
Events and periods can accompany one another. مع بداية means “with/at the beginning of,” مع مرور الوقت “as time passes,” and بالتزامن مع “in conjunction with/simultaneously with.” The noun after مع remains genitive; in مع بدايةِ العامِ, العام is additionally genitive inside the iḍāfa.
تنخفض درجات الحرارة مع غروب الشمس في الصحراء.
tankhafiḍu darajātu l-ḥarārati maʿa ghurūbi sh-shamsi fī ṣ-ṣaḥrāʾ.
Temperatures fall as the sun sets in the desert.
تزداد خبرتك مع مرور الوقت وكثرة الممارسة.
tazdādu khibratuka maʿa murūri l-waqti wa-kathrati l-mumārasa.
Your experience grows over time and with frequent practice.
افتتح الخط الجديد بالتزامن مع بدء العام الدراسي.
uftutiḥa l-khaṭṭu l-jadīdu bit-tazāmuni maʿa badʾi l-ʿāmi d-dirāsiyy.
The new route opened at the same time as the start of the academic year. (Formal.)
These are temporal accompaniment expressions, not a general replacement for في. Say في الساعة التاسعة “at nine” and في الشتاء “in winter” when simply locating an event in time.
Temporary possession: معي versus عندي
When a suffixed مع phrase is the predicate, it can mean that something is physically with a person or available to them at that moment: الوثائق معي “the documents are with me.” عند has a broader locative-possession meaning: عندي وثائق “I have documents,” and الوثائق عندي can mean “the documents are at my place/in my possession.”
جواز سفري معي، لكن التذكرة عند أخي.
jawāzu safarī maʿī, lakinna t-tadhkirata ʿinda ʾakhī.
My passport is with me, but the ticket is with my brother.
هل معك شاحن؟ نفدت بطارية هاتفي.
hal maʿaka shāḥin? nafidat baṭṭāriyyatu hātifī.
Do you have a charger with you? My phone battery has run out.
عندي نسخة أخرى في المنزل، أما النسخة الأصلية فمعي الآن.
ʿindī nuskhatun ʾukhrā fī l-manzili, ʾammā n-nuskhatu l-ʾaṣliyyatu fa-maʿī l-ʾān.
I have another copy at home; as for the original, I have it with me now.
Do not use معه automatically for every English has. For stable possession, attributes, and availability not understood as “with him now,” له، عنده، لديه may be more appropriate. The boundary is contextual, but the concrete “on one's person/in one's company” reading strongly favors مع.
Alignment and formal collocations
Abstract entities can align with standards, plans, or evidence. Formal frames include تماشيا مع “in line with,” انسجاما مع “in harmony with,” بالتعاون مع “in cooperation with,” and بالمقارنة مع “in comparison with.”
عدلت المؤسسة سياستها تماشيا مع المعايير الجديدة.
ʿaddalati l-muʾassasatu siyāsatahā tamāshiyan maʿa l-maʿāyīri l-jadīda.
The organization revised its policy in line with the new standards. (Formal.)
نفذت الدراسة بالتعاون مع ثلاث جامعات محلية.
nuffidhati d-dirāsatu bit-taʿāwuni maʿa thalāthi jāmiʿātin maḥalliyya.
The study was conducted in cooperation with three local universities. (Academic.)
The fixed connector مع ذلك means “nevertheless/even so,” not literal accompaniment. It is common in formal and neutral prose.
كانت الأدلة محدودة، ومع ذلك قررت اللجنة مواصلة التحقيق.
kānati l-ʾadillatu maḥdūdatan, wa-maʿa dhālika qarrarati l-lajnatu muwāṣalata t-taḥqīq.
The evidence was limited; nevertheless, the committee decided to continue the investigation.
مع أن and a following clause
Before a noun phrase, مع expresses accompaniment. The fixed concessive connector مع أن introduces a clause and means “although/even though.” أنّ assigns accusative case to its noun and takes its own predicate; this is not simply a companion noun after مع.
مع أن الطريق كان طويلا، وصلنا قبل الغروب.
maʿa ʾanna ṭ-ṭarīqa kāna ṭawīlan, waṣalnā qabla l-ghurūb.
Although the road was long, we arrived before sunset.
This concessive use is a fixed extension. Do not infer that any finite clause can follow bare مع; use مع أن when the intended relation is “despite the fact that.”
Attached pronouns: معه, معها, and معي
Suffixes attach directly to مَعَـ: مَعَهُ maʿahu, مَعَهَا maʿahā, مَعَكَ maʿaka. First-person مَعِي is maʿī without a doubled y.
| Complement | Fully vocalized form | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| me | مَعِي | maʿī |
| you (m.sg.) | مَعَكَ | maʿaka |
| you (f.sg.) | مَعَكِ | maʿaki |
| him/it | مَعَهُ | maʿahu |
| her/it | مَعَهَا | maʿahā |
| us | مَعَنَا | maʿanā |
| them (m.) | مَعَهُمْ | maʿahum |
هذه هي الباحثة التي عملت معها في المشروع السابق.
hādhihi hiya l-bāḥithatu llatī ʿamiltu maʿahā fī l-mashrūʿi s-sābiq.
This is the researcher with whom I worked on the previous project.
Formal Arabic uses a resumptive suffix معها inside the relative clause. English may strand with at the end, but Arabic does not leave bare مع there.
Common Mistakes
Using مع for an instrument because English says “with”
❌ فتحت الباب مع المفتاح الاحتياطي.
Incorrect for the intended instrumental meaning—use بـ for the means.
✅ فتحت الباب بالمفتاح الاحتياطي.
fataḥtu l-bāba bil-miftāḥi l-iḥtiyāṭiyy.
I opened the door with the spare key.
Replacing equal coordination with accompaniment
❌ أحمد مع نورة فازا بالجائزة.
Incorrect agreement—مع نورة does not turn أحمد into a dual grammatical subject; coordinate the two names when they are equal winners.
✅ أحمد ونورة فازا بالجائزة مناصفة.
ʾaḥmadu wa-nūratu fāzā bil-jāʾizati munāṣafa.
Ahmed and Noura won the prize jointly.
Giving the following noun nominative case
❌ سافرت مع الباحث، مع نطق الباحث بالضمة.
Incorrect in fully inflected Arabic—the noun after مع is genitive: الباحثِ.
✅ سافرت مع الباحث المسؤول لحضور المؤتمر.
sāfartu maʿa l-bāḥithi l-masʾūli liḥuḍūri l-muʾtamar.
I traveled with the researcher in charge to attend the conference.
Stranding مع
❌ هذه هي الزميلة التي سافرت مع.
Incorrect—formal Arabic requires the resumptive suffix معها.
✅ هذه هي الزميلة التي سافرت معها إلى المؤتمر.
hādhihi hiya z-zamīlatu llatī sāfartu maʿahā ʾilā l-muʾtamar.
This is the colleague with whom I traveled to the conference.
Detaching a one-letter preposition
❌ تحدثت مع المدير ب هدوء.
Incorrect—manner بـ attaches directly to هدوء.
✅ تحدثت مع المدير بهدوء عن المشكلة.
taḥaddathtu maʿa l-mudīri bihudūʾin ʿani l-mushkila.
I spoke calmly with the director about the problem.
Key Takeaways
- مع presents a companion, simultaneous circumstance, interacting participant, or aligned standard as alongside a profiled participant or event.
- Use و for equal coordination; use مع when one participant is framed as accompanying another.
- معي often means “with me now,” while عندي has a broader possession/location range.
- Attached forms are معه، معها، معي (maʿahu, maʿahā, maʿī); formal Arabic keeps them inside relative clauses instead of stranding مع.
