عند — at, with, and in someone’s possession

عند does not correspond to one English preposition. Its organizing idea is presence in someone’s sphere: at a person’s place, available to someone, present on an occasion, or valid from someone’s point of view. That network explains why عندي كتاب means “I have a book” even though Arabic has not inserted a verb meaning have.

Grammatically, عند is a relational noun used adverbially, traditionally a ẓarf, rather than a simple preposition like في. It is normally the first term of an iḍāfa: عندَ المديرِ. In fully inflected Arabic, adverbial عندَ is accusative while its noun complement is genitive. A pronoun suffix fills the same complement slot: عندي، عندك، عنده; the full suffix system is introduced on Pronoun Suffixes after Prepositions.

Physical presence: at or by

With a person, institution, or salient point, عند locates something in that landmark’s immediate sphere. English may choose at, with, by, or at someone’s place. For containment inside a room or area, في is usually the clearer prototype.

سأنتظرك عند مدخل المكتبة.

sa-ʾantaẓiruka ʿinda madkhali l-maktaba.

I will wait for you at the library entrance.

تركت النسخة الأصلية عند المحامي.

taraktu n-nuskhata l-ʾaṣliyyata ʿinda l-muḥāmī.

I left the original copy with the lawyer.

الأطفال عند جدتهم هذا المساء.

al-ʾaṭfālu ʿinda jaddatihim hādhā l-masāʾ.

The children are at their grandmother’s this evening.

The last example does not require a word for “house.” The person defines a socially understood place or sphere. This use is common in formal MSA as well as ordinary cross-regional speech.

💡
Contrast هو في مكتب المدير “he is inside the director’s office” with هو عند المدير “he is with/at the director.” في profiles containment; عند profiles proximity or presence in someone’s sphere.

Possession and availability

Arabic commonly expresses possession as existence in a possessor’s sphere: عندي سيارة literally presents “a car at me.” The possessed item is usually an indefinite subject following the fronted predicate عندي. Definite possessed nouns are possible when the context identifies them, but the construction still describes custody or availability, not legal ownership by itself.

عندي سؤال عن الفقرة الأخيرة.

ʿindī suʾālun ʿani l-fiqrati l-ʾakhīra.

I have a question about the final paragraph.

هل عندكم غرفة متاحة لليلة واحدة؟

hal ʿindakum ghurfatun mutāḥatun lilaylatin wāḥida?

Do you have a room available for one night?

ليس عنده وقت كاف لمراجعة العقد اليوم.

laysa ʿindahu waqtun kāfin limurājaʿati l-ʿaqdi l-yawm.

He does not have enough time to review the contract today.

Possession is negated with ليس عند... or لا يوجد عند..., depending on the sentence. Do not build it with يكون merely because English uses have. Also distinguish temporary custody الملف عندي “the file is with me” from ownership الملف لي “the file belongs to me.”

الملف عندي الآن، لكنه لزميلتي.

al-malaffu ʿindī l-ʾāna, lakinnahu lizāmīlatī.

The file is with me now, but it belongs to my colleague.

Time and occasions

Before an event noun, عند means “at the time of” or “upon.” The complement is genitive and often heads a longer iḍāfa: عند وصولِ القطارِ. With a finite clause, standard Arabic normally uses عندما “when,” not bare عند followed directly by a conjugated verb.

اتصل بي عند وصولك إلى المحطة.

ittaṣil bī ʿinda wuṣūlika ʾilā l-maḥaṭṭa.

Call me when you arrive at the station.

أغلقت النوافذ عندما بدأ المطر.

ʾaghlaqtu n-nawāfidha ʿindamā badaʾa l-maṭar.

I closed the windows when the rain started.

يجب إبراز بطاقة الهوية عند الدخول.

yajibu ʾibrāzu biṭāqati l-huwiyyati ʿinda d-dukhūl.

An identity card must be shown upon entry. (Formal.)

The event can be punctual, as with arrival, or a recurring circumstance. عند الضرورة means “when necessary,” while عند كل اجتماع means “at every meeting.”

Viewpoint, standards, and evaluation

An idea can be “present with” a scholar, institution, tradition, or evaluator. Thus عند introduces whose view, terminology, or standard is relevant. English often uses according to, for, in the view of, or nothing overt.

هذا المصطلح له معنى أضيق عند اللغويين.

hādhā l-muṣṭalaḥu lahu maʿnan ʾaḍyaqu ʿinda l-lughawiyyīn.

This term has a narrower meaning among linguists.

تعد حماية البيانات أولوية عند إدارة المؤسسة.

tuʿaddu ḥimāyatu l-bayānāti ʾawlawiyyatan ʿinda ʾidārati l-muʾassasa.

Data protection is a priority for the institution’s management. (Formal; English uses ‘for.’)

تختلف دلالة الكلمة عند القدماء عنها في الاستعمال الحديث.

takhtalifu dalālatu l-kalimati ʿinda l-qudamāʾi ʿanhā fī l-istiʿmāli l-ḥadīth.

The word’s meaning among earlier scholars differs from its meaning in modern usage. (Academic.)

This is not a universal substitute for English according to. To cite a report’s explicit statement, وفقا للتقرير or بحسب التقرير is often more direct. عند is especially natural when a person or group supplies the intellectual framework.

Case and internal iḍāfa

In عند باب الجامعة, the whole phrase works adverbially, but its internal structure is a chain: عندَ is the head, بابِ is its genitive complement, and الجامعةِ is in turn the genitive complement of باب. The first two nouns cannot take the definite article because they are nonfinal terms of the iḍāfa.

اجتمعنا عند باب قاعة المحاضرات.

ijtamaʿnā ʿinda bābi qāʿati l-muḥāḍarāt.

We met at the door of the lecture hall.

يوضع الجهاز عند طرف الطاولة، لا في وسطها.

yūḍaʿu l-jihāzu ʿinda ṭarafi ṭ-ṭāwilati, lā fī wasaṭihā.

The device is placed at the edge of the table, not in its center.

💡
Although English dictionaries list عند under “prepositions,” its noun-like behavior explains the construct state and case pattern: عندَ + genitive complement. Learn the whole structure, not only the translation.

Formal collocations

Several administrative expressions use عند: عند الاقتضاء “where/when appropriate,” عند الطلب “on request,” عند اللزوم “when needed,” and عندئذ “then; at that point.” These are (formal) and especially common in instructions, policies, and reports.

يمكن تمديد المهلة عند الاقتضاء بقرار من اللجنة.

yumkinu tamdīdu l-muhlati ʿinda l-iqtiḍāʾi biqarārin mina l-lajna.

The deadline may be extended where appropriate by a decision of the committee. (Formal.)

ترسل نسخة ورقية من الشهادة عند الطلب.

tursalu nuskhatun waraqiyyatun mina sh-shahādati ʿinda ṭ-ṭalab.

A paper copy of the certificate is sent on request. (Formal.)

Common Mistakes

Translating English at mechanically

❌ درست عند الجامعة ثلاث سنوات.

Incorrect for studying within an institution—use في الجامعة; عند suggests being by or at the institution as a point.

✅ درست في الجامعة ثلاث سنوات، وغالبا ما كنت أنتظر صديقي عند البوابة.

darastu fī l-jāmiʿati thalātha sanawātin, wa-ghāliban mā kuntu ʾantaẓiru ṣadīqī ʿinda l-bawwāba.

I studied at the university for three years, and I often waited for my friend at the gate.

Using the wrong case in the construct phrase

❌ وقفت عند باب الجامعة.

waqaftu ʿinda bābu l-jāmiʿati

Incorrect reading—the complement of عند is genitive: بابِ الجامعةِ, not بابُ الجامعةِ.

✅ وقفت عند باب الجامعة حتى فتح الحارس.

waqaftu ʿinda bābi l-jāmiʿati ḥattā fataḥa l-ḥāris.

I stood at the university gate until the guard opened it.

Stranding عند

❌ هذا هو الطبيب الذي تركت الملف عند.

Incorrect—formal Arabic keeps the relational word with a resumptive suffix.

✅ هذا هو الطبيب الذي تركت الملف عنده.

hādhā huwa ṭ-ṭabību lladhī taraktu l-malaffa ʿindah.

This is the doctor with whom I left the file.

Choosing إلى or لـ merely from English to

❌ الكتاب إلى أخي الآن، لكنه ليس ملكه.

Incorrect—إلى marks a goal; temporary custody is expressed with عند.

✅ الكتاب عند أخي الآن، لكنه لي.

al-kitābu ʿinda ʾakhī l-ʾāna, lakinnahu lī.

The book is with my brother now, but it belongs to me.

Detaching a one-letter preposition

❌ اتصلت ب الطبيب لتأكيد موعدي غدا.

Incorrect—one-letter بـ attaches directly to الطبيب.

✅ اتصلت بالطبيب لتأكيد موعدي غدا.

ittaṣaltu biṭ-ṭabībi litaʾkīdi mawʿidī ghadan.

I called the doctor to confirm my appointment tomorrow.

Key Takeaways

  • عند organizes location, possession, occasion, and viewpoint around “presence in a sphere.”
  • It behaves as an adverbial relational noun: عندَ + genitive, with an iḍāfa or an attached suffix.
  • عندي can mean “I have,” but لي more directly marks ownership and في marks containment.
  • Use عند + event noun but عندما + finite clause, and learn formal expressions such as عند الاقتضاء as units.
