بين locates or relates something within a set of distinct points or participants. Those points may be two people, several cities, two times, competing choices, or all members of a group. English splits the result between between and among; formal Modern Standard Arabic normally uses the same بين for both.
Like عند, بين is a relational noun used adverbially, not merely a simple particle. It normally begins an iḍāfa: بينَ بيتينِ “between two houses,” بينَ الطلابِ “among the students.” In fully inflected speech, adverbial بينَ is accusative and its nominal complement is genitive. After من, however, it becomes مِنْ بَيْنِ because من governs it.
For the general mechanics behind this noun-to-noun relation, see The iḍāfa: the Arabic construct phrase.
Between two points
Two endpoints can appear as one dual noun, two coordinated nouns, or two pronouns. The complement after بين remains genitive regardless of how English phrases the relation.
يقع المقهى بين مبنيين قديمين.
yaqaʿu l-maqhā bayna mabnayayni qadīmayn.
The café is between two old buildings.
تسير حافلة مباشرة بين المطار ووسط المدينة.

جلس المدير بين نائبه ورئيسة القسم.
jalasa l-mudīru bayna nāʾibihi wa-raʾīsati l-qism.
The director sat between his deputy and the department head.
In بين المطار ووسط المدينة, المطار and وسط are coordinated complements of بين; both are genitive. In the dual مبنيين, the ending ـَيْنِ is the genitive/accusative dual ending, not a plural.
Among members of a group
With a plural or collective complement, بين means “among” or “within the group.” It presents the members as individually relevant, which is why it is natural with distribution, comparison, disagreement, and shared circulation.
وزعت المعلمة المهام بين الطلاب بالتساوي.
wazzaʿati l-muʿallimatu l-mahāmma bayna ṭ-ṭullābi bit-tasāwī.
The teacher distributed the tasks equally among the students.

Compare في المجموعة “in the group,” which treats the group as a container, with بين أفراد المجموعة “among the group’s members,” which foregrounds relations or distribution across individuals.
Attached pronouns
Pronoun suffixes attach directly to بين. The first-person singular is بيني “between me / on my side of a relation,” and the plural forms include بيننا “between/among us” and بينهم “between/among them.” The suffix supplies one complete complement; another participant may be coordinated with و.
| Complement | Form | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| me | بَيْنِي | baynī |
| you (m.sg.) | بَيْنَكَ | baynaka |
| him | بَيْنَهُ | baynahu |
| her | بَيْنَهَا | baynahā |
| us | بَيْنَنَا | baynanā |
| them | بَيْنَهُمْ | baynahum |

kāna l-ḥiwāru baynī wa-bayna l-bāḥithati ṣarīḥan wa-mufīdan.
The conversation between the researcher and me was frank and useful.
Repeating بين in بيني وبين الباحثة is the standard balanced construction. English speakers sometimes omit the second بين because English says “between me and the researcher,” but Arabic normally marks each side explicitly when the first is a suffix.
Reciprocal relations
Because بين creates a relational domain, it combines naturally with plural suffixes and reciprocal expressions. فيما بينهم means “among themselves,” while بين بعضهم بعضا makes “one another” explicit. In the latter, the final بعضا is accusative according to its role in the reciprocal construction.
اتفق المشاركون فيما بينهم على جدول جديد.
ittafaqa l-mushārikūna fīmā baynahum ʿalā jadwalin jadīd.
The participants agreed among themselves on a new schedule.
يتبادل أعضاء الفريق المعلومات بين بعضهم بعضا.

tuʿazzizu th-thiqatu l-mutabādalatu t-taʿāwuna bayna l-muʾassasāt.
Mutual trust strengthens cooperation among institutions. (Formal; English may use ‘among.’)
بين بعضهم بعضا is explicit and formal. Often the verb itself—such as تعاون “cooperate” or تفاوض “negotiate”—already supplies a reciprocal meaning, so a shorter تعاونوا فيما بينهم is enough.
Time ranges and alternatives
Two times joined after بين define a range. With clock time, days, or quantities, repeat و only to coordinate the endpoints: بين التاسعة والحادية عشرة. For an origin-to-endpoint path, من...إلى... may be more precise; بين views the interval as the space separating two limits.
يمكنك الاتصال بين التاسعة والحادية عشرة صباحا.
yumkinuka l-ittiṣālu bayna t-tāsiʿati wa-l-ḥādiyata ʿashrata ṣabāḥan.
You can call between nine and eleven in the morning.

With alternatives, بين frames a choice set: الاختيار بين الدراسة والعمل “the choice between studying and working.” This is an abstract extension of separate points inside one decision space.
علينا أن نوازن بين السرعة والدقة.
ʿalaynā ʾan nuwāzina bayna s-surʿati wa-d-diqqa.
We must balance speed and accuracy.
Difference, comparison, and formal collocations
Several verbs govern بين: فرق بين “distinguish between,” ميز بين “differentiate between,” قارن بين “compare,” جمع بين “combine,” and فصل بين “separate.” English sometimes uses a direct object or another preposition, so learn each predicate with its Arabic frame.

من بين marks selection from a set: واحد من بين عشرة “one out of ten.” Here بين is genitive after من, and its following complement remains genitive because the iḍāfa continues.

Common Mistakes
Imposing the English between/among split

✅ دارت مناقشة حيوية بين الباحثين.
dārat munāqashatun ḥayawiyyatun bayna l-bāḥithīn.
A lively discussion took place among the researchers.
Omitting the repeated relational word with a suffix

baqiya l-ʾamru baynī wa-bayna l-mudīri ḥattā ntahā t-taḥqīq.

✅ يمتد الطريق بين الجبلين حتى الساحل.
yamtaddu ṭ-ṭarīqu bayna l-jabalayni ḥattā s-sāḥil.
The road runs between the two mountains to the coast.

✅ ميز الباحث بين الفرضية الأولى والثانية.
mayyaza l-bāḥithu bayna l-faraḍiyyati l-ʾūlā wa-th-thāniya.
The researcher distinguished between the first and second hypotheses.
Detaching one-letter لـ

waḍaʿati l-lajnatu ḥaddan lin-nizāʿi bayna ṭ-ṭarafayn.
The committee put an end to the dispute between the two parties.
