قبل and بعد — before and after

قبل and بعد order one point relative to another: قبل الاجتماع “before the meeting,” بعد الغداء “after lunch.” Their central meaning is sequence, usually in time but also in an ordered text, procedure, or hierarchy. English before and after are useful glosses, but Arabic grammar depends on what follows: a noun, a pronoun suffix, an event expressed with أن, or a finite clause introduced by بعدما.

Both words are relational nouns used adverbially. In fully inflected Arabic, ordinary adverbial قَبْلَ and بَعْدَ are accusative and begin an iḍāfa; the following noun is genitive. This structure explains قبلَ بدءِ الاجتماعِ: بدء is genitive after قبل, and الاجتماع is genitive after بدء.

Before or after a noun

The complement may name a clock time, event, period, person, or ordered item. A concrete event noun is often more compact than an entire clause.

وصلت قبل الموعد بعشر دقائق.

waṣaltu qabla l-mawʿidi biʿashri daqāʾiq.

I arrived ten minutes before the appointment.

سنراجع الملاحظات بعد الاجتماع.

sanurājiʿu l-mulāḥaẓāti baʿda l-ijtimāʿ.

We will review the notes after the meeting.

اغسل يديك قبل الأكل وبعده.

ighsil yadayka qabla l-ʾakli wa-baʿdah.

Wash your hands before eating and afterward.

The noun may itself head an iḍāfa:

أرسل المسودة قبل نهاية يوم العمل.

ʾarsili l-musawwadāta qabla nihāyati yawmi l-ʿamal.

Send the draft before the end of the working day.

استؤنفت الرحلات بعد تحسن حالة الطقس.

ustuʾnifati r-riḥlātu baʿda taḥassuni ḥālati ṭ-ṭaqs.

Flights resumed after the weather conditions improved. (Formal.)

Arabic often prefers an event noun such as وصول، انتهاء، تحسن where English uses a finite clause. That preference is stylistic, not a rule forbidding clauses.

Attached pronouns

Suffixes replace the noun complement: قبلي “before me,” قبلك “before you,” بعده “after him/it,” بعدها “after her/it.” The reference can be temporal, textual, or positional in an ordered sequence.

دخلت مريم قبلي، وخرجت بعدي بقليل.

dakhalat maryamu qablī, wa-kharajat baʿdī biqalīl.

Maryam went in before me and came out shortly after me.

قرأت المقدمة ثم الفصل الذي بعدها.

qaraʾtu l-muqaddimata thumma l-faṣla lladhī baʿdahā.

I read the introduction and then the chapter after it.

Formal Arabic does not strand the relational word. A relative clause normally keeps a resumptive suffix: اليوم الذي بعده “the day after it,” not a clause ending in bare بعد.

💡
A suffix after قبل or بعد names the reference point, not necessarily a person doing the action: الفصل الذي بعدها means “the chapter after it,” with ـها referring back to the feminine noun المقدمة.

قبل أن and بعد أن with events

To relate the main event to a finite action, use قبل أن + subjunctive verb and بعد أن + finite clause. After قبل أن, the action is viewed as not yet realized at that reference point, and أن makes the imperfect subjunctive: قبل أن يبدأَ. After بعد أن, a perfect verb is especially natural for a completed earlier event, though an imperfect can occur when aspect and context require it.

احفظ الملف قبل أن تغلق الحاسوب.

iḥfaẓi l-malaffa qabla ʾan tughliqa l-ḥāsūb.

Save the file before you shut down the computer.

غادرنا بعد أن انتهت الجلسة.

ghādarnā baʿda ʾani ntahati l-jalsa.

We left after the session ended.

سأتصل بك بعد أن أصل إلى الفندق.

sa-ʾattaṣilu bika baʿda ʾan ʾaṣila ʾilā l-funduq.

I will call you after I arrive at the hotel.

In the last sentence, أن أصلَ is future relative to speaking but prior to the call. The construction orders events; it does not require the dependent event to be past in absolute time.

💡
Use the form after أن, not the English tense, to predict Arabic mood: قبل أن يبدأَ and بعد أن أصلَ have subjunctive imperfects because أن governs them.

بعدما and the roles of ما

بعدما is a conjunction meaning “after” followed directly by a finite clause. It is written as one word. With a completed event, it commonly takes the perfect. بعد أن انتهى الاجتماع and بعدما انتهى الاجتماع are close in meaning; the first transparently contains أن, while the second uses fixed conjunctional بعدما.

أرسلنا التقرير بعدما راجعه الخبير.

ʾarsalnā t-taqrīra baʿdamā rājaʿahu l-khabīr.

We sent the report after the expert reviewed it.

عاد التيار بعدما أصلح الفنيون العطل.

ʿāda t-tayyāru baʿdamā ʾaṣlaḥa l-fanniyyūna l-ʿuṭl.

The power returned after the technicians repaired the fault.

قبلما exists, particularly in older or elevated usage, but it is much less neutral in contemporary formal prose. For ordinary MSA, prefer قبل أن. A different ما appears in labels such as مرحلة ما قبل الإنتاج “the pre-production phase” and دراسات ما بعد الحرب “postwar studies.” Here ما قبل and ما بعد create “what is before/after X,” often functioning as stable classificatory expressions.

ناقش الفريق مخاطر ما قبل الإطلاق وخطة ما بعد الإطلاق.

nāqasha l-farīqu makhāṭira mā qabla l-ʾiṭlāqi wa-khuṭṭata mā baʿda l-ʾiṭlāq.

The team discussed pre-launch risks and the post-launch plan. (Formal.)

Do not treat every ما in these patterns as an ordinary relative pronoun with a recoverable English “what.” Some combinations have become conventional labels.

من قبل and من بعد

Adding من changes the structure and often the discourse function. With an explicit complement, من قبلِ الاجتماع means “from/before the meeting” and من بعدِ الاجتماع means “from/after the meeting,” with قبل/بعد genitive after من. More commonly, bare-looking من قبل means “previously; before.” The sequence من بعد ذلك means “after that; subsequently,” but it is (formal/elevated); neutral contemporary prose usually uses the shorter بعد ذلك.

لم أزر هذه المدينة من قبل.

lam ʾazur hādhihi l-madīnata min qabl.

I had not visited this city before.

راجع المؤرخ مرحلة الإصلاح وما حدث من بعد ذلك.

rājaʿa l-muʾarrikhu marḥalata l-ʾiṣlāḥi wa-mā ḥadatha min baʿdi dhālik.

The historian reviewed the reform period and what happened subsequently. (Formal/elevated.)

In fully inflected traditional analysis, when the complement is omitted but understood, the forms are built on ḍamm: مِنْ قَبْلُ، مِنْ بَعْدُ. The short vowel is invisible in ordinary unvocalized writing and is normally lost at a sentence-final pause. With an explicit complement, the syntax is transparent: مِنْ قَبْلِ الْاجْتِمَاعِ.

تغيرت الإجراءات من قبل الأزمة إلى ما بعدها.

taghayyarati l-ʾijrāʾātu min qabli l-ʾazmati ʾilā mā baʿdahā.

The procedures changed from the period before the crisis to what followed it. (Formal.)

Temporal, textual, and abstract order

The same sequence model extends beyond clock time. A paragraph can come قبل الخاتمة, one priority can rank قبل another, and one procedural stage follows another. Spatial front/back is usually expressed more directly with أمام and خلف, discussed on أمام، خلف، فوق، تحت.

تأتي قائمة المراجع بعد الخاتمة مباشرة.

taʾtī qāʾimatu l-marājiʿi baʿda l-khātimati mubāshara.

The reference list comes immediately after the conclusion.

تضع الخطة سلامة العاملين قبل سرعة التنفيذ.

taḍaʿu l-khuṭṭatu salāmata l-ʿāmilīna qabla surʿati t-tanfīdh.

The plan puts worker safety ahead of speed of implementation. (Formal; English uses ‘ahead of.’)

Common Mistakes

Adding a preposition before the ordinary adverbial

❌ سنلتقي في بعد الاجتماع.

Incorrect—ordinary temporal بعد already functions adverbially; do not add في.

✅ سنلتقي بعد الاجتماع عند المدخل الرئيسي.

sanaltaqī baʿda l-ijtimāʿi ʿinda l-madkhali r-raʾīsī.

We will meet after the meeting at the main entrance.

Using the indicative after أن

❌ سأغادر قبل أن يبدأ الاجتماع.

sa-ʾughādiru qabla ʾan yabdaʾu l-ijtimāʿ

Incorrect reading—أن makes the imperfect subjunctive يبدأَ, not the indicative يبدأُ.

✅ غادر قبل أن يبدأ الاجتماع.

ghādara qabla ʾan yabdaʾa l-ijtimāʿ.

He left before the meeting began.

Giving the complement nominative case

❌ بعد نهاية الاجتماع.

baʿda nihāyatu l-ijtimāʿi

Incorrect reading—نهاية is genitive after بعد: بعدَ نهايةِ الاجتماعِ, not بعدَ نهايةُ الاجتماعِ.

✅ بعد نهاية الاجتماع، عاد الجميع إلى مكاتبهم.

baʿda nihāyati l-ijtimāʿi, ʿāda l-jamīʿu ʾilā makātibihim.

After the end of the meeting, everyone returned to their offices.

Stranding بعد

❌ هذه هي المرحلة التي سنراجع النتائج بعد.

Incorrect—formal Arabic requires a suffix: بعدها.

✅ هذه هي المرحلة التي سنراجع النتائج بعدها.

hādhihi hiya l-marḥalatu llatī sanurājiʿu n-natāʾija baʿdahā.

This is the stage after which we will review the results.

Separating a one-letter preposition

❌ اتصلت ب المدير قبل السفر.

Incorrect—one-letter بـ attaches directly to المدير.

✅ اتصلت بالمدير قبل السفر.

ittaṣaltu bil-mudīri qabla s-safar.

I contacted the director before traveling.

Choosing إلى from English to

❌ وصلت عشر دقائق إلى الاجتماع.

Incorrect calque—an arrival ten minutes earlier is expressed with قبل الاجتماع بعشر دقائق, not by copying English ‘to’ with إلى.

✅ وصلت قبل الاجتماع بعشر دقائق.

waṣaltu qabla l-ijtimāʿi biʿashri daqāʾiq.

I arrived ten minutes before the meeting.

Key Takeaways

  • Ordinary قبلَ/بعدَ + noun are accusative adverbial relational nouns; their complements are genitive.
  • Attach suffixes directly: قبلي، بعده، بعدها, and do not strand either word.
  • Use قبل أن + subjunctive; use بعد أن or the conjunction بعدما before a clause.
  • Distinguish ordinary sequence from discourse expressions من قبل “previously” and من بعد ذلك “after that.”
