Verbal-Noun Iḍāfa

An Arabic verbal noun (مصدر) names an event or process without finite tense: وصول “arrival,” مراجعة “reviewing/review,” إعلان “announcing/announcement.” When it heads an iḍāfa, its genitive term can correspond to the subject of the related verb, the object, or another semantically linked argument. وصول الوفد is “the delegation’s arrival,” while مراجعة التقرير is normally “reviewing the report.” The same genitive form therefore does not always express the same role.

English has a similar ambiguity in “the journalist’s photograph”: it may be a photograph taken by the journalist or one depicting the journalist. Arabic verbal-noun syntax is systematic, but lexical meaning and context remain essential. When both readings survive, careful formal prose rephrases rather than asking case alone to solve the problem.

The underlying construct rules are reviewed in the iḍāfa overview; here the genitive term is interpreted through the verbal noun's argument structure.

A genitive agent: the subjective iḍāfa

With an intransitive event, the genitive term commonly corresponds to the finite verb’s subject. Start with وصل الوفد “the delegation arrived.” Nominalize the verb as وصول, place it first as the head, and put the arriving participant in the genitive:

تأخر وصول الوفد بسبب إغلاق الطريق.

taʾakhkhara wuṣūlu l-wafdi bi-sababi ʾighlāqi ṭ-ṭarīq.

The delegation's arrival was delayed because the road was closed.

Head وصولُ is nominative subject of تأخر. الوفدِ is genitive in the iḍāfa and semantically the arriver—the subject of related وصل.

أسعد نجاح الفريق جميع المشجعين.

ʾasʿada najāḥu l-farīqi jamīʿa l-mushajjiʿīn.

The team's success delighted all the supporters.

الفريقِ is the semantic subject of “succeed,” not something acted upon by success. Final definite الفريق makes نجاح الفريق definite, and the whole chain is the nominative subject of أسعد.

💡
Paraphrase the verbal noun as a finite clause. If وصول الوفد becomes وصل الوفد, the genitive noun is subjective: it performs or experiences the event.

A genitive patient: the objective iḍāfa

With a transitive event, the genitive term may correspond to the direct object of the related verb. مراجعة التقرير normally means “reviewing the report”: the report is reviewed.

استغرقت مراجعة التقرير ثلاثة أيام كاملة.

ʾistaghraqat murājaʿatu t-taqrīri thalāthata ʾayyāmin kāmila(h).

Reviewing the report took three full days.

Construct مراجعةُ exposes its t; genitive التقريرِ is the thing reviewed. Feminine verb استغرقت agrees with the verbal-noun head. The phrase ثلاثةَ أيامٍ كاملةٍ expresses duration. أيامٍ and its feminine singular adjective كاملةٍ are genitive after the numeral; final pause hides the adjective's short ending.

أثار إلغاء الرحلة غضب المسافرين.

ʾathāra ʾilghāʾu r-riḥlati ghaḍaba l-musāfirīn.

The cancellation of the flight angered the passengers.

Genitive الرحلةِ is what was cancelled. The actor who cancelled it is absent, just as English passive-like “cancellation of the flight” can omit the canceller.

Definiteness still follows the right edge:

تتطلب مراجعة تقرير وقتا وتركيزا.

tataṭallabu murājaʿatu taqrīrin waqtan wa-tarkīzā.

Reviewing a report requires time and concentration.

تتطلب مراجعة التقرير النهائي موافقة المدير.

tataṭallabu murājaʿatu t-taqrīri n-nihāʾiyyi muwāfaqata l-mudīr.

Reviewing the final report requires the director's approval.

Indefinite تقريرٍ leaves the first chain indefinite; definite التقريرِ النهائيِّ makes the second definite. The verbal noun itself takes neither الـ nor tanwīn while construct.

A verbal noun can retain both subject and object

A transitive verbal noun can be construct to its semantic subject while governing its semantic object in the accusative. Compare finite راجَعَ المحررُ التقريرَ with nominal مراجعةُ المحررِ التقريرَ.

أدت مراجعة المحرر التقرير قبل نشره إلى تصحيح عدة أخطاء.

ʾaddat murājaʿatu l-muḥarriri t-taqrīra qabla nashrihi ʾilā taṣḥīḥi ʿiddati ʾakhṭāʾ.

The editor's review of the report before publication led to the correction of several errors.

Genitive المحررِ is the reviewer, while accusative التقريرَ is what was reviewed. The complete event phrase مراجعةُ المحررِ التقريرَ قبل نشره is the nominative subject of outer verb أدّت. The finite verb and the verbal noun therefore have separate argument structures.

أثار إعلان وزارة الصحة نتائج الدراسة نقاشا عاما.

ʾathāra ʾiʿlānu wizārati ṣ-ṣiḥḥati natāʾija d-dirāsati niqāshan ʿāmmā.

The Ministry of Health's announcement of the study results prompted a public discussion.

Parse the longer structure from the right. وزارة الصحةِ is the announcing institution and genitive after head إعلانُ. The verbal noun retains accusative object نتائجَ الدراسةِ. The entire nominalized event is subject of أثار, whose own accusative object is نقاشاً عاماً.

This pattern is productive (formal) but can become dense. A finite clause—أعلنت وزارة الصحة نتائج الدراسة، ففوجئ الجمهور—may be clearer when several arguments and modifiers compete.

A genitive can be genuinely ambiguous

Some verbal nouns permit both a subjective and an objective reading. تصوير الصحفي may mean “the journalist’s photographing” or “the photographing of the journalist.” Case marks الصحفيِّ as genitive in both; it does not label agent versus patient.

أثار تصوير الصحفي جدلا بعد نشر المقطع.

ʾathāra taṣwīru ṣ-ṣaḥafiyyi jadalan baʿda nashri l-maqṭaʿ.

The journalist's filming—or the filming of the journalist—caused controversy after the clip was published.

The sentence alone leaves the participant’s role unresolved. Two rephrasings distinguish it:

أثار المقطع الذي صوره الصحفي جدلا واسعا.

ʾathāra l-maqṭaʿu lladhī ṣawwarahu ṣ-ṣaḥafiyyu jadalan wāsiʿā.

The clip that the journalist filmed caused widespread controversy.

أثار تصوير الناس للصحفي في الشارع جدلا واسعا.

ʾathāra taṣwīru n-nāsi li-ṣ-ṣaḥafiyyi fī sh-shāriʿi jadalan wāsiʿā.

People's filming of the journalist in the street caused widespread controversy.

The finite relative clause makes الصحفيُّ the filmer in the first. In the second, genitive الناسِ is the subjective complement and للصحفيِّ explicitly marks the filmed participant. The preposition is not a universal object marker for every verbal noun; it is a disambiguating option licensed by this expression.

💡
If world knowledge does not resolve a verbal-noun iḍāfa, do not force the genitive into an agent or patient label. Add the other argument, use a suitable preposition, or rewrite as a finite clause.

Adjective placement can target the event or its participant

The adjective must follow the complete chain. Its agreement and case identify its attachment:

أثار رفض اللجنة المفاجئ للمقترح نقاشا حادا.

ʾathāra rafḍu l-lajnati l-mufājiʾu li-l-muqtaraḥi niqāshan ḥāddā.

The committee's sudden rejection of the proposal sparked a heated discussion.

Nominative masculine المفاجئُ modifies head رفضُ. Definite genitive اللجنةِ makes the chain definite, so the head adjective is also definite.

أثار رفض اللجنة الجديدة للقرار تساؤلات قانونية.

ʾathāra rafḍu l-lajnati l-jadīdati li-l-qarāri tasāʾulātin qānūniyya(h).

The new committee's rejection of the decision raised legal questions.

Genitive feminine الجديدةِ modifies اللجنةِ. The pair demonstrates that a post-chain adjective can describe either the event head or its genitive participant; agreement and case make the intended attachment explicit in careful speech.

Dual verbal nouns and construct nūn loss

When a dual verbal noun becomes a construct head, it loses nūn like any other dual:

كشفت مراجعتا الخبير مشكلتين مختلفتين في العقد.

kashafat murājaʿatā l-khabīri mushkilatayni mukhtalifatayni fī l-ʿaqd.

The expert's two reviews revealed two different problems in the contract.

Nominative independent مراجعتان becomes construct مراجعتا before الخبيرِ. Its written ت reflects the dual ending attached to the tāʾ-marbūṭa stem. Accusative dual مشكلتينِ مختلفتينِ retains nūn because neither word is a construct head.

Common Mistakes

Assuming every genitive is the possessor or agent

❌ مراجعة التقرير تعني أن التقرير قام بالمراجعة.

Incorrect — التقرير is normally the objective genitive: it is what gets reviewed.

✅ استغرقت مراجعة الخطة الجديدة أسبوعا كاملا.

ʾistaghraqat murājaʿatu l-khuṭṭati l-jadīdati ʾusbūʿan kāmilā.

Reviewing the new plan took a full week.

Reversing the verbal noun and its argument

❌ الوفد وصول تأخر بسبب الطقس.

Incorrect — the event head وصول comes before its genitive participant الوفد.

✅ تأخر وصول الطائرة بسبب سوء الأحوال الجوية.

taʾakhkhara wuṣūlu ṭ-ṭāʾirati bi-sababi sūʾi l-ʾaḥwāli l-jawwiyya(h).

The plane's arrival was delayed because of bad weather.

Putting الـ or tanwīn on a construct verbal noun

❌ استغرقت المراجعة التقرير يومين.

Incorrect for the iḍāfa “reviewing the report” — construct مراجعة cannot take الـ or tanwīn.

✅ استغرقت مراجعة الوثائق يومين بسبب كثرتها.

ʾistaghraqat murājaʿatu l-wathāʾiqi yawmayni bi-sababi kathratihā.

Reviewing the documents took two days because there were so many.

Breaking construct morphology: tāʾ and dual nūn

❌ مراجعة المحرر حسنت النص.

murājaʿa l-muḥarriri ḥassanat n-naṣṣ

Incorrect reading — construct مراجعة exposes t before its genitive term.

✅ مراجعة المدققة حسنت دقة الترجمة.

murājaʿatu l-mudaqqiqati ḥassanat diqqata t-tarjama(h).

The proofreader's review improved the translation's accuracy.

❌ مراجعتان الخبير كشفتا الخطأ نفسه.

Incorrect — nominative dual مراجعتان loses nūn when it heads an iḍāfa.

✅ مراجعتا المحاسب كشفتا اختلافا في الأرقام.

murājaʿatā l-muḥāsibi kashafatā khtilāfan fī l-ʾarqām.

The accountant's two reviews revealed a discrepancy in the figures.

Assigning an adjective by nearness alone

❌ رفض اللجنة المفاجئ يعني أن اللجنة مفاجئة.

Incorrect — masculine nominative المفاجئ modifies head رفض, not feminine genitive اللجنة.

✅ أثار قرار المحكمة المفاجئ اهتمام وسائل الإعلام.

ʾathāra qarāru l-maḥkamati l-mufājiʾu htimāma wasāʾili l-ʾiʿlām.

The court's sudden decision attracted media attention.

Key Takeaways

  • A genitive after a verbal noun may be its semantic subject, object, or another licensed argument.
  • Paraphrase with the related finite verb to test whether the genitive performs or undergoes the event.
  • A verbal noun can be construct to its subject while still governing an accusative object.
  • Case alone cannot resolve every agent–patient ambiguity; explicit arguments, prepositions, or a finite clause can.
  • Ordinary iḍāfa rules still govern definiteness, articles, tanwīn, construct tāʾ, nūn loss, and adjective attachment.
