Competing Prepositions and Register

Arabic prepositions overlap, but they are not freely interchangeable. إلى and لـ can both appear where English has to; في and بـ can both place an activity in a setting; عن and من can both be translated with from in some contexts. The choice reflects a semantic role, a lexical frame, a conventional collocation, or sometimes a regional editorial preference.

Variation must therefore be described, not flattened into one “correct” equivalent. Some choices change the truth conditions; others shift focus or register; a smaller set are genuine alternatives in part of the Arabic-speaking world. For formal contemporary MSA, use the most widely edited construction while learning to recognize well-established variants.

The detailed cores of إلى, لـ, and في provide the baseline; here the focus is what changes when plausible competitors enter the same context.

إلى versus لـ: endpoint or participant

The spatial prototype of إلى is an endpoint toward which motion is directed. Attached لـ often marks a recipient, beneficiary, possessor, purpose, or participant for whom something is intended.

ذهبت إلى مكتب المدير وسلمت له النسخة الأصلية.

dhahabtu ʾilā maktabi l-mudīri wa-sallamtu lahu n-nuskhata l-ʾaṣliyya.

I went to the director’s office and handed him the original copy. (Endpoint إلى; recipient له.)

أرسلت الطرد إلى المكتب وأرسلت للمديرة رسالة منفصلة.

ʾarsaltu ṭ-ṭarda ʾilā l-maktabi wa-ʾarsaltu lil-mudīrati risālatan munfaṣila.

I sent the parcel to the office and sent the director a separate message.

This is a useful contrast, not a categorical ban on animate goals after إلى. ذهبت إلى المدير is perfectly normal when the director is the destination of going. Conversely, قلت للمدير uses لـ because the director is the addressee selected by قال.

The abstract extension of إلى remains endpoint-like: توصل إلى نتيجة “reached a conclusion,” أدى إلى تغير “led to a change.” لـ remains participant- or purpose-like: أعد التقرير للجنة “prepared the report for the committee,” خصص المال للتدريب “allocated the money for training.”

توصل الفريق إلى حل، ثم شرح الحل للمسؤولين.

tawaṣṣala l-farīqu ʾilā ḥallin, thumma sharaḥa l-ḥalla lil-masʾūlīn.

The team reached a solution and then explained it to the officials.

قدمت طلبا إلى الجامعة، وتقدمت للمنحة في اليوم نفسه.

qaddamtu ṭalaban ʾilā l-jāmiʿati, wa-taqaddamtu lil-minḥati fī l-yawmi nafsih.

I submitted an application to the university and applied for the grant on the same day.

In the second example إلى الجامعة identifies the receiving institution; للمنحة identifies the opportunity sought. English uses to and for, but the Arabic choice follows roles and lexical constructions.

💡
For an English to, classify the Arabic relation: destination or result (إلى), recipient/addressee/beneficiary (لـ), or infinitive marker (أنْ or another verbal construction). The English word itself makes no decision.

في versus بـ: containment, domain, means, or linkage

The prototype of في is containment or location within a domain. The clitic بـ has several functions, notably instrument, means, manner, accompaniment in a conventional frame, and lexical linkage selected by a predicate.

انتظر المسافرون في المحطة وسافروا بالقطار إلى الرباط.

intaẓara l-musāfirūna fī l-maḥaṭṭati wa-sāfarū bil-qiṭāri ʾilā r-ribāṭ.

The travelers waited in the station and traveled by train to Rabat. (Location في; means بـ.)

كتب الباحث الملاحظات في دفتر صغير وكتب التقرير بالحاسوب.

kataba l-bāḥithu l-mulāḥaẓāti fī daftarin ṣaghīrin wa-kataba t-taqrīra bil-ḥāsūb.

The researcher wrote the notes in a small notebook and wrote the report on a computer. (Location/medium versus instrument.)

Abstractly, في locates thought or participation inside a subject or activity: فكر في الأمر، شارك في المؤتمر، نجح في الاختبار. بـ marks the element required by frames such as آمن بـ “believe in,” اعترف بـ “acknowledge,” اهتم بـ “take an interest in,” and اتصل بـ “contact.” These are lexical patterns, not transparent translations of “in” and “with.”

فكرنا في الاقتراح، لكننا لم نقتنع به.

fakkarnā fī l-iqtirāḥi, lākinnanā lam naqṭaniʿ bih.

We considered the proposal, but we were not convinced by it.

شارك الخبير في الجلسة واتصل بالوزارة بعد انتهائها.

shāraka l-khabīru fī l-jalsati wa-ttaṣala bil-wizārati baʿda ntihāʾihā.

The expert took part in the session and contacted the ministry after it ended.

Locative بـ and regional editorial taste

Locative بـ is not an error. Phrases such as بالجامعة، بالمستشفى، بالرباط occur in formal Arabic and have deep Classical precedent. They are especially visible in concise institutional and journalistic styles, including much North African and Egyptian writing (formal; regionally favored in frequency, not regionally exclusive). في الجامعة، في المستشفى، في الرباط is the transparent pan-regional default for learners.

عقدت الندوة بالجامعة صباح الاثنين.

ʿuqidati n-nadwatu bil-jāmiʿati ṣabāḥa l-ithnayn.

The symposium was held at the university on Monday morning. (Formal journalistic style; locative بـ.)

عقدت الندوة في الجامعة صباح الاثنين.

ʿuqidati n-nadwatu fī l-jāmiʿati ṣabāḥa l-ithnayn.

The symposium was held at the university on Monday morning. (Neutral pan-regional MSA.)

These sentences can describe the same event. The difference is stylistic distribution, unlike كتب في الدفتر versus كتب بالقلم, where the prepositions normally distinguish location from instrument.

عن versus من: separation by topic or source

The prototype of من is origin, source, starting point, or partitive selection. عن historically involves separation too, but in contemporary frames it often marks a topic, an object of inquiry, defense, substitution, avoidance, or resulting cause.

خرج الوفد من المبنى وتحدث عن نتائج الاجتماع.

kharaja l-wafdu mina l-mabnā wa-taḥaddatha ʿan natāʾiji l-ijtimāʿ.

The delegation left the building and spoke about the meeting’s results. (Source من; topic عن.)

تلقت الصحيفة المعلومات من الوزارة ثم سألتها عن التفاصيل.

talaqqati ṣ-ṣaḥīfatu l-maʿlūmāti mina l-wizārati thumma saʾalathā ʿani t-tafāṣīl.

The newspaper received the information from the ministry and then asked it about the details.

Changing the preposition can change the relation. أخذ الكتاب من زميله identifies the source from whom he took the physical book. In the learned-transmission frame أخذ العلم عن أستاذه, by contrast, عن identifies the teacher from whom knowledge was received (formal/academic); this is not the ordinary transfer-of-possession frame.

نقل المؤرخ الرواية عن شاهد عيان، لا من تقرير صحفي.

naqala l-muʾarrikhu r-riwāyata ʿan shāhidi ʿayānin, lā min taqrīrin ṣaḥafiyy.

The historian transmitted the account on the authority of an eyewitness, not from a newspaper report. (Academic source distinctions.)

Common frames with عن include بحث عن “look for,” أجاب عن “answer,” دافع عن “defend,” امتنع عن “refrain from,” نيابة عن “on behalf of,” and ناتج عن “resulting from.” English may use for, no preposition, from, or on behalf of; Arabic keeps عن because the whole construction selects it.

تحدثت المحامية نيابة عن موكلها ودافعت عن حقه في الاستئناف.

taḥaddathati l-muḥāmiyatu niyābatan ʿan muwakkilihā wa-dāfaʿat ʿan ḥaqqihi fī l-istiʾnāf.

The lawyer spoke on behalf of her client and defended his right to appeal. (Formal legal collocations.)

Genuine alternatives and meaning-preserving variation

Not every doublet signals a dramatic change. Edited MSA may offer a concise simple preposition and a heavier framing expression:

More conciseHeavier/formal alternativeTypical effect
في هذا الموضوعفيما يتعلق بهذا الموضوعexplicitly frames relevance
عن الخطةبشأن الخطة / في شأن الخطةadministrative “regarding”
للطلابمن أجل الطلابforegrounds beneficiary or motive
في الجامعةبالجامعةneutral location versus concise formal style

أصدرت الوزارة بيانا بشأن إجراءات التسجيل الجديدة.

ʾaṣdarati l-wizāratu bayānan bishaʾni ʾijrāʾāti t-tasjīli l-jadīda.

The ministry issued a statement regarding the new registration procedures. (Formal administrative style.)

Do not turn register into a false grammar rule. بشأن is not “more correct” than every use of عن, and بالجامعة is not uniquely regional. Distribution depends on genre, collocation, and authorial tradition. When the alternatives preserve meaning, choose the clearest widely shared form for your audience.

💡
A good dictionary note records both status and function: “بالجامعة — grammatical locative بـ; frequent in concise formal prose, with regional differences in frequency,” not simply “wrong” or “dialect.”

Attached pronouns preserve the contrast

Suffixes do not neutralize the choice: إليه / له, فيه / به, and عنه / منه remain different constructions.

وصل التقرير إليه، لكنه لم يكتب له ردا بعد.

waṣala t-taqrīru ʾilayhi, lākinnahu lam yaktub lahu raddan baʿd.

The report reached him, but he has not written him a reply yet.

ناقشنا الاقتراح وتحدثنا عنه، ثم أخذنا منه فكرتين عمليتين.

nāqashnā l-iqtirāḥa wa-taḥaddathnā ʿanhu, thumma ʾakhadhnā minhu fikratayni ʿamaliyyatayn.

We discussed the proposal and talked about it, then took two practical ideas from it.

In a relative clause the suffix is still required: الموضوع الذي تحدثنا عنه, not a stranded عن.

Common Mistakes

Choosing إلى solely because English has “to”

❌ شرحت المشكلة إلى المديرة.

Incorrect for the normal addressee frame—شرح marks the person with لـ.

✅ شرحت للمديرة المشكلة بالتفصيل.

sharaḥtu lil-mudīrati l-mushkilata bit-tafṣīl.

I explained the problem to the director in detail.

Choosing في solely because English has “in”

❌ آمن الباحث في صحة الفرضية.

Incorrect lexical frame—آمن ‘believed in’ selects بـ.

✅ آمن الباحث بصحة الفرضية في البداية.

ʾāmana l-bāḥithu biṣiḥḥati l-faraḍiyyati fī l-bidāya.

The researcher initially believed the hypothesis to be valid.

Confusing source with topic

❌ تحدث المتحدث من الأزمة الاقتصادية.

Incorrect for a topic—تحدث selects عن.

✅ تحدث المتحدث عن الأزمة الاقتصادية.

taḥaddatha l-mutaḥaddithu ʿani l-ʾazmati l-iqtiṣādiyya.

The spokesperson spoke about the economic crisis.

Detaching a one-letter preposition

❌ اتصلت ب الوزارة وكتبت ل المدير.

Incorrect spelling—بـ and لـ attach to the following word.

✅ اتصلت بالوزارة وكتبت للمدير.

ittaṣaltu bil-wizārati wa-katabtu lil-mudīr.

I contacted the ministry and wrote to the director.

Stranding the selected preposition

❌ هذا هو الموضوع الذي تحدثنا عن مطولا أمس.

Incorrect in formal MSA—عن needs a resumptive suffix.

✅ هذا هو الموضوع الذي تحدثنا عنه مطولا أمس.

hādhā huwa l-mawḍūʿu lladhī taḥaddathnā ʿanhu muṭawwalan ʾams.

This is the subject that we discussed at length yesterday.

Ignoring genitive government

❌ تقدمت للمنحة، مع نطق المنحة بالضمة.

Incorrect in fully inflected Arabic—attached لـ governs genitive المنحةِ.

✅ تقدمت للمنحة قبل انتهاء الموعد.

taqaddamtu lil-minḥati qabla ntihāʾi l-mawʿid.

I applied for the grant before the deadline.

Key Takeaways

  • إلى typically profiles an endpoint; لـ profiles a recipient, beneficiary, purpose, or selected participant.
  • في profiles containment or a domain; بـ often marks means, instrument, or a lexical relation.
  • من marks source or origin; عن commonly marks topic, inquiry, defense, avoidance, or transmitted authority.
  • Some contrasts change meaning; others, such as neutral في الجامعة and concise formal بالجامعة, primarily differ in distribution and register.
  • Preserve the chosen preposition with suffixes, genitive case, and formal relative-clause resumption.
