Many Arabic verbs select not only a kind of meaning but also a complement frame: بحث عن شيء “look for something,” نجح في شيء “succeed in something,” اعتمد على شيء “rely on something.” This lexical selection is called government. The preposition links the verb to its complement, and the complement noun is genitive.
English is not a safe predictor. English look for corresponds to بحث عن, but English consider corresponds to نظر في, and English discuss something corresponds to the direct-object construction ناقش شيئا with no preposition. Learn a verb as a small construction: verb, preposition or direct object, semantic role, and a natural example.
From spatial relation to lexical frame
The original meanings of prepositions often provide a mnemonic. إلى points toward a goal, عن marks movement away or a topic separated for attention, في places activity within a field, and على can present a basis or object of pressure. Verb government extends these relations into abstract domains.
اتجه المسافرون إلى البوابة بعد إعلان رقم الرحلة.
ittajaha l-musāfirūna ʾilā l-bawwābati baʿda ʾiʿlāni raqmi r-riḥla.
The travelers headed toward the gate after the flight number was announced. (Concrete goal.)
دعت الجمعية إلى مراجعة معايير السلامة.
daʿati l-jamʿiyyatu ʾilā murājaʿati maʿāyīri s-salāma.
The association called for a review of safety standards. (Abstract goal; formal.)
The second construction preserves the idea of directing action toward a goal, but دعا إلى is now a conventional formal frame meaning “call for; advocate.” The metaphor helps; actual usage still has to be learned.
Core high-frequency frames
The following combinations are worth storing as units. The Arabic object type matters as much as the English gloss.
| Arabic frame | Typical complement | Natural English |
|---|---|---|
| بحث عن | missing or desired entity | look/search for |
| بحث في | topic or issue examined | research / examine |
| فكر في | idea, person, possible action | think about / consider |
| نظر في | request, case, question | consider / examine |
| نظر إلى | visual target or viewpoint | look at |
| استمع إلى | sound, speaker, presentation | listen to |
| أجاب عن | question or inquiry | answer |
| حصل على | thing obtained | obtain / receive |
| شارك في | event or activity | participate in |
| ساهم في | process or result | contribute to |
| اعتمد على | basis, resource, person relied on | rely on |
| اتفق مع | person or party | agree with |
| اتفق على | plan, term, decision | agree on |
بحثت المهندسة عن الخلل ثم بحثت في أسبابه المحتملة.
baḥathati l-muhandisatu ʿani l-khalali thumma baḥathat fī ʾasbābihi l-muḥtamala.
The engineer looked for the fault and then investigated its possible causes.
ستنظر اللجنة في طلبك وتجيب عن أسئلتك خلال أسبوع.
satanẓuru l-lajnatu fī ṭalabika wa-tujību ʿan ʾasʾilatika khilāla ʾusbūʿ.
The committee will consider your application and answer your questions within a week. (Formal; English uses no preposition after ‘consider’ or ‘answer.’)
استمع المشاركون إلى العرض ثم ساهموا في النقاش.
istamaʿa l-mushārikūna ʾilā l-ʿarḍi thumma sāhamū fī n-niqāsh.
The participants listened to the presentation and then contributed to the discussion.
The table is a high-frequency core, not an exhaustive dictionary. A verb may allow other frames with other meanings, and a corpus list without semantic labels can be actively misleading.
Changing the preposition can change the verb's sense
The most important combinations are not interchangeable variants. The selected preposition tells the reader how to construe the relationship.
بحث عن versus بحث في
بحث عن seeks an entity; بحث في examines a subject.
يبحث الفريق عن وثيقة مفقودة، ويبحث في ظروف اختفائها.
yabḥathu l-farīqu ʿan wathīqatin mafqūdatin, wa-yabḥathu fī ẓurūfi khtifāʾihā.
The team is looking for a missing document and investigating the circumstances of its disappearance.
نظر إلى versus نظر في
نظر إلى directs the eyes or viewpoint toward something. نظر في enters an issue for examination.
نظر القاضي إلى الصورة ثم نظر في الأدلة الأخرى.
naẓara l-qāḍī ʾilā ṣ-ṣūrati thumma naẓara fī l-ʾadillati l-ʾukhrā.
The judge looked at the photograph and then considered the other evidence.
اعتمد شيئا versus اعتمد على شيء
Without a preposition, اعتمد الخطة means “adopted/approved the plan.” With على, اعتمد على الخطة means “relied on the plan.”
اعتمد المجلس الخطة، لكنها تعتمد على تمويل لم يقر بعد.
iʿtamada l-majlisu l-khuṭṭata, lākinnahā taʿtamidu ʿalā tamwīlin lam yuqarra baʿd.
The council adopted the plan, but it relies on funding that has not yet been approved.
رغب في versus رغب عن
رغب في expresses desire or interest; رغب عن means to turn away from or reject something (formal/literary).
رغب الباحث في تمديد المنحة، ولم يرغب عن المشروع نفسه.
raghiba l-bāḥithu fī tamdīdi l-minḥati, wa-lam yarghab ʿani l-mashrūʿi nafsih.
The researcher wanted the grant extended; he had not turned away from the project itself. (The second frame is elevated.)
People, topics, and decisions: اتفق as a model
One verb can select different prepositions because its complements play different roles. With اتفق, مع identifies the other party, على identifies the agreed matter, and بشأن introduces the issue under discussion.
اتفقت المديرة مع المورد على موعد التسليم.
ittafaqati l-mudīratu maʿa l-muwarridi ʿalā mawʿidi t-taslīm.
The manager agreed with the supplier on the delivery date.
اختلف الطرفان بشأن التكلفة، لكنهما اتفقا على بقية الشروط.
ikhtalafa ṭ-ṭarafāni bishaʾni t-taklifati, lākinnahumā ttafaqā ʿalā baqiyyati sh-shurūṭ.
The two parties disagreed about the cost but agreed on the remaining conditions.
This role-based method generalizes better than “على means on.” The other party and the decision are different semantic arguments even when English uses with and on in a superficially similar way.
Nouns, clauses, and verbal nouns as complements
A preposition can govern an ordinary noun, a verbal noun, or a clause interpreted as a nominal unit. After أن, the imperfect is subjunctive for its own reason.
نفكر في نقل المكتب إلى مبنى أصغر.
nufakkiru fī naqli l-maktabi ʾilā mabnan ʾaṣghar.
We are considering moving the office to a smaller building. (Verbal noun complement.)
وافق المالك على أن يجدد المستأجر العقد سنة أخرى.
wāfaqa l-māliku ʿalā ʾan yujaddida l-mustaʾjiru l-ʿaqda sanatan ʾukhrā.
The owner agreed that the tenant could renew the contract for another year.
In على أن يجدد, the entire أن clause fills the complement slot selected by وافق على. Do not assign an audible genitive ending to the verb; case belongs to nouns, while the verb shows subjunctive mood after أن.
Attached pronouns and no stranding
When the complement is a pronoun, attach it to the selected preposition: بحث عنه، نظر فيها، اعتمد عليها، استمع إليهم، اتفق معه. The choice of preposition remains the same. The complete form inventory is on Pronoun Suffixes after Prepositions.
هذه هي المبادرة التي ساهمنا فيها واعتمدت الوزارة عليها.
hādhihi hiya l-mubādaratu llatī sāhamnā fīhā wa-ʿtamadati l-wizāratu ʿalayhā.
This is the initiative that we contributed to and that the ministry relied on.
English leaves to and on at the end of its relative clauses. Formal Arabic does not strand them: فيها and عليها contain resumptive suffixes referring back to المبادرة.
وجدنا السجل الذي كان المفتش يبحث عنه.
wajadnā s-sijilla lladhī kāna l-mufattishu yabḥathu ʿanh.
We found the record that the inspector had been looking for.
A reliable learning method
For each new verb, record four things:
- The exact frame: ساهم في, not just ساهم “contribute.”
- The complement type: an activity/result after في; a person may require another structure.
- A contrast if one exists: بحث عن ملف / بحث في مسألة.
- A suffix example: ساهم فيها، بحث عنه. This confirms that you can use the frame in real discourse.
Then verify the combination in a reliable dictionary or edited corpus. Frequency matters: a construction can be grammatically imaginable yet not be the idiomatic formal choice.
Common Mistakes
Copying an English preposition
❌ أجاب المدير إلى السؤال فورا.
Incorrect—standard أجاب selects عن for the question answered.
✅ أجاب المدير عن السؤال فورا.
ʾajāba l-mudīru ʿani s-suʾāli fawran.
The director answered the question immediately.
Adding a preposition where Arabic uses a direct object
❌ ناقشنا عن المشكلة في الاجتماع.
Incorrect—ناقش normally takes the topic as a direct object.
✅ ناقشنا المشكلة في الاجتماع.
nāqashnā l-mushkilata fī l-ijtimāʿ.
We discussed the problem in the meeting.
Ignoring a meaning shift
❌ اعتمد المجلس على الخطة، والمقصود أنه أقرها رسميا.
Wrong frame for the intended sense—اعتمد على means ‘relied on,’ not ‘formally adopted.’
✅ اعتمد المجلس الخطة بالإجماع.
iʿtamada l-majlisu l-khuṭṭata bil-ʾijmāʿ.
The council adopted the plan unanimously.
Stranding the selected preposition
❌ هذا هو المشروع الذي ساهمنا في.
Incorrect in formal Arabic—the preposition needs a resumptive suffix.
✅ هذا هو المشروع الذي ساهمنا فيه.
hādhā huwa l-mashrūʿu lladhī sāhamnā fīh.
This is the project to which we contributed.
Separating a one-letter preposition
❌ اعترفت الشركة ب الخطأ.
Incorrect spelling—one-letter بـ attaches to the following noun.
✅ اعترفت الشركة بالخطأ ونشرت تصحيحا.
iʿtarafati sh-sharikatu bil-khaṭaʾi wa-nasharat taṣḥīḥan.
The company acknowledged the error and published a correction.
Key Takeaways
- Learn verb government as a lexical frame: verb + preposition or direct object + complement type.
- English equivalents do not predict Arabic selection: نظر في can mean “consider,” while ناقش takes a direct object.
- A new preposition may create a new sense: اعتمد الخطة “adopted” versus اعتمد على الخطة “relied on.”
- Attach pronoun suffixes to the selected preposition and keep resumptive suffixes in formal relative clauses.
- Build a small, verified set of frequent frames and their contrasts; no finite list can replace dictionary and corpus checking for each new verb.
