The core image behind عن (ʿan) is distance or separation from a reference point. A person moves away from a door, a driver departs from a route, or someone refrains from an action. Arabic extends that distance relation to topics viewed or spoken about, information sought about someone, defense that keeps harm away, and action performed in place of another person.
English most often renders عن as about, from, away from, for, or on behalf of. None of these is a complete rule. عن governs a genitive noun, and its attached forms include عنه، عنها، عني. Learn it as a family of related constructions and learn predicate government explicitly.
The full cross-preposition suffix set appears on Pronoun Suffixes after Prepositions; the doubled n of عني and عنا is treated below.
Physical distance and separation
With motion or position, عن identifies the reference point from which something is separated. It is especially frequent after ابتعد عن “moved/stayed away from,” انحرف عن “deviated from,” and بعيد عن “far from.”
ابتعد الأطفال عن حافة الرصيف عندما وصلت الحافلة.
ibtaʿada l-ʾaṭfālu ʿan ḥāffati r-raṣīfi ʿindamā waṣalati l-ḥāfila.
The children moved away from the edge of the pavement when the bus arrived.
انحرفت السيارة عن الطريق بسبب الضباب الكثيف.
inḥarafati s-sayyāratu ʿani ṭ-ṭarīqi bisababi ḍ-ḍabābi l-kathīf.
The car veered off the road because of the thick fog.
يقع الفندق بعيدا عن ضوضاء وسط المدينة.
yaqaʿu l-funduqu baʿīdan ʿan ḍawḍāʾi wasaṭi l-madīna.
The hotel is located away from the noise of the city center.
Compare خرج من البيت “left/came out of the house,” where من marks the source, with ابتعد عن البيت “moved away from the house,” where عن measures increasing distance from a reference point. The same trip can contain both relations.
خرجنا من المبنى وابتعدنا عنه حتى توقف الإنذار.
kharajnā mina l-mabnā wa-btaʿadnā ʿanhu ḥattā tawaqqafa l-ʾindhār.
We left the building and moved away from it until the alarm stopped.
Temporal distance and missed schedules
Time can be treated as a reference line. تأخر عن الموعد means that an event lies behind its scheduled point; انقطع عن العمل presents a period of absence or cessation from work. These are lexical extensions of separation, not a productive replacement for في with all time expressions.
تأخر القطار عن موعده عشرين دقيقة بسبب أعمال الصيانة.
taʾakhkhara l-qiṭāru ʿan mawʿidihi ʿishrīna daqīqatan bisababi ʾaʿmāli ṣ-ṣiyāna.
The train was twenty minutes behind schedule because of maintenance work.
انقطع الموظف عن العمل أسبوعا بعد العملية.
inqaṭaʿa l-muwaẓẓafu ʿani l-ʿamali ʾusbūʿan baʿda l-ʿamaliyya.
The employee was away from work for a week after the operation.
The expression عن قريب “soon” occurs in (formal/literary) prose, but neutral contemporary MSA more often uses قريبا. Register matters: recognizing a fixed phrase does not make عن a general future-time marker.
Topics and information
A topic is conceptually held at a distance and viewed, discussed, or asked about. Frequent frames include تحدث عن “spoke about,” سأل عن “asked about/after,” كتب عن “wrote about,” تقرير عن “a report on,” and معلومات عن “information about.”
تحدثت الخبيرة عن آثار الجفاف في القرى الزراعية.
taḥaddathati l-khabīratu ʿan ʾāthāri l-jafāfi fī l-qurā z-zirāʿiyya.
The expert spoke about the effects of drought in farming villages.
سألت موظفة الاستقبال عن أقرب موعد متاح.
saʾaltu muwaẓẓafata l-istiqbāli ʿan ʾaqrabi mawʿidin mutāḥ.
I asked the receptionist about the earliest available appointment.
نشرت المؤسسة تقريرا عن جودة مياه الشرب.
nasharati l-muʾassasatu taqrīran ʿan jawdati miyāhi sh-shurb.
The organization published a report on drinking-water quality. (Formal.)
The first noun after عن is genitive. In عن جودةِ مياهِ الشربِ, جودة is genitive because of the preposition, while مياه and الشرب continue an internal iḍāfa chain.
Topic عن contrasts with في after بحث. بحث عن الملف means “looked for the file,” whereas بحث في المسألة means “examined/investigated the issue.” English may use search for and research, but Arabic encodes the contrast through government.
بحثت عن العقد في الأرشيف، ثم بحثت في شروطه مع المحامي.
baḥathtu ʿani l-ʿaqdi fī l-ʾarshīfi, thumma baḥathtu fī shurūṭihi maʿa l-muḥāmī.
I looked for the contract in the archive, then examined its terms with the lawyer.
Stopping, abstaining, and avoidance
An action can be construed as something one separates oneself from. Use توقف عن “stopped,” امتنع عن “refrained from,” أقلع عن “gave up,” and أعرض عن “turned away from.” A following verbal noun is genitive after عن.
توقفت الشركة عن استخدام العبوات البلاستيكية.
tawaqqafati sh-sharikatu ʿani stikhdāmi l-ʿubuwwāti l-bilāstīkiyya.
The company stopped using plastic packaging.
امتنع العضو عن التصويت بسبب تضارب المصالح.
imtanaʿa l-ʿuḍwu ʿani t-taṣwīti bisababi taḍārubi l-maṣāliḥ.
The member abstained from voting because of a conflict of interest. (Formal.)
English stop can take a gerund directly; Arabic توقف in this meaning requires عن. By contrast, أوقف المدير المشروع is transitive: “the director stopped the project.” The difference is not optional decoration.
Defense, disclosure, and other governed complements
The separation image also underlies defense: one acts to keep danger away عن someone or something. Modern formal prose frequently uses دافع عن “defended,” كشف عن “revealed,” أعلن عن “announced,” أبلغ عن “reported,” and أجاب عن “answered.” English often supplies a direct object.
دافع المحامي عن موكله أمام المحكمة.
dāfaʿa l-muḥāmī ʿan muwakkilihi ʾamāma l-maḥkama.
The lawyer defended his client before the court.
كشف التحقيق عن خلل في إجراءات السلامة.
kashafa t-taḥqīqu ʿan khalalin fī ʾijrāʾāti s-salāma.
The investigation revealed a flaw in the safety procedures. (Formal; English uses a direct object.)
أجابت المتحدثة عن السؤال من دون تردد.
ʾajābati l-mutaḥaddithatu ʿani s-suʾāli min dūni taraddud.
The spokesperson answered the question without hesitation.
Some contemporary writers also use أجاب على السؤال. أجاب عن السؤال is the conservative formal pattern taught here; the existence of variation does not license أجاب إلى السؤال.
Substitution and representation
In نيابة عن, one person acts in another's place or as their representative. The idea is that the act proceeds away from the original principal through a substitute. (Formal) بالنيابة عن is particularly common in institutional contexts.
وقعت نائبة المدير الوثيقة نيابة عنه.
waqqaʿat nāʾibatu l-mudīri l-wathīqata niyābatan ʿanh.
The deputy director signed the document on his behalf. (Formal.)
أتحدث بالنيابة عن الفريق كله عندما أشكركم.
ʾataḥaddathu bin-niyābati ʿani l-farīqi kullihi ʿindamā ʾashkurukum.
I speak for the whole team when I thank you.
Other formal frames include بصرف النظر عن “regardless of” and فضلا عن “in addition to/not to mention.” These are lexicalized constructions, not word-for-word assemblies from English.
سيطبق القرار بصرف النظر عن حجم المؤسسة.
sayuṭabbaqu l-qarāru biṣarfi n-naẓari ʿan ḥajmi l-muʾassasa.
The decision will apply regardless of the organization's size. (Formal.)
Attached pronouns: عنه, عنها, and عني
Most suffixes attach to عَنْـ: عَنْهُ ʿanhu, عَنْهَا ʿanhā, عَنْكَ ʿanka. Before first-person ـي and first-person plural ـنا, the two n sounds merge and are pronounced doubled: عَنِّي ʿannī, عَنَّا ʿannā. In unvocalized target text these appear as عني، عنا.
| Complement | Fully vocalized form | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| me | عَنِّي | ʿannī |
| you (m.sg.) | عَنْكَ | ʿanka |
| you (f.sg.) | عَنْكِ | ʿanki |
| him/it | عَنْهُ | ʿanhu |
| her/it | عَنْهَا | ʿanhā |
| us | عَنَّا | ʿannā |
| them (m.) | عَنْهُمْ | ʿanhum |
سألتني الصحفية عن المشروع، فأرسلت إليها معلومات عنه.
saʾalatnī ṣ-ṣaḥafiyyatu ʿani l-mashrūʿi, fa-ʾarsaltu ʾilayhā maʿlūmātin ʿanh.
The journalist asked me about the project, so I sent her information about it.
لا تتحدث عني وكأنني غير موجود.
lā tataḥaddath ʿannī wa-kaʾannanī ghayru mawjūd.
Do not talk about me as though I were not here.
At sentence-final pause عَنْهُ may surface as عَنْهْ ʿanh, as shown above. Inside connected speech before another word, retain ʿanhu.
Common Mistakes
Copying an English preposition
❌ بحثت على مفاتيحي في كل الغرف.
Incorrect in standard MSA—بحث عن means ‘looked for.’
✅ بحثت عن مفاتيحي في كل الغرف ثم وجدتها في السيارة.
baḥathtu ʿan mafātīḥī fī kulli l-ghurafi thumma wajadtuhā fī s-sayyāra.
I looked for my keys in every room and then found them in the car.
Choosing إلى or لـ because English says “to”
❌ أجابت المتحدثة إلى السؤال.
Incorrect—formal أجاب takes عن for the question answered.
✅ أجابت المتحدثة عن السؤال بدقة.
ʾajābati l-mutaḥaddithatu ʿani s-suʾāli bidiqqa.
The spokesperson answered the question precisely.
Giving the governed noun nominative case
❌ ابتعدنا عن المدخل، مع نطق المدخل بالضمة.
Incorrect in fully inflected Arabic—عن governs genitive المدخلِ.
✅ ابتعدنا عن المدخل حتى تمر سيارة الإسعاف.
ibtaʿadnā ʿani l-madkhali ḥattā tamurra sayyāratu l-ʾisʿāf.
We moved away from the entrance so that the ambulance could pass.
Stranding عن
❌ هذا هو الموضوع الذي تحدثنا عن.
Incorrect—formal Arabic keeps عن attached to a resumptive pronoun.
✅ تلك هي المسألة التي تحدثنا عنها في الجلسة السابقة.
tilka hiya l-masʾalatu llatī taḥaddathnā ʿanhā fī l-jalsati s-sābiqa.
That is the issue we discussed in the previous session.
Detaching a one-letter preposition in a related phrase
❌ أبلغت عن العطل ب رسالة منفصلة.
Incorrect—one-letter بـ attaches to رسالة.
✅ أبلغت عن العطل برسالة منفصلة.
ʾablaghtu ʿani l-ʿuṭli birisālatin munfaṣila.
I reported the fault in a separate message.
