حتى (ḥattā) always points toward an outer boundary or unexpected extreme, but it participates in three different constructions. Before a noun it can be a preposition meaning “until/up to.” Before an extreme member of a set it can coordinate or focus that member as “even.” Before a clause it can mark an endpoint or purpose, often with a subjunctive imperfect: “until” or “so that.”
The shared boundary idea explains why one spelling covers all three, but the grammar must remain separate. A noun after prepositional حتى is genitive; a focused or coordinated noun keeps the case required by its role; an imperfect describing a later intended endpoint is subjunctive. Translating حتى first and deciding its grammar afterward is a reliable way to make case and mood errors.
Prepositional حتى: up to a boundary
Prepositional حتى governs a visible noun phrase and marks the point where a path, period, scale, or process reaches its limit. This is the most concrete prototype.
امتد الطابور حتى باب المحطة.
imtadda ṭ-ṭābūru ḥattā bābi l-maḥaṭṭa.
The line extended as far as the station entrance.
سرنا بمحاذاة النهر حتى الجسر القديم.
sirnā bimuḥādhāti n-nahri ḥattā l-jisri l-qadīm.
We walked along the river as far as the old bridge.
يبقى مكتب الاستعلامات مفتوحا حتى المساء.
yabqā maktabu l-istiʿlāmāti maftūḥan ḥattā l-masāʾ.
The information desk remains open until the evening.
The first two limits are spatial; the third is temporal. Abstract scales work in the same way:
ارتفعت نسبة الإنجاز حتى تسعين في المئة.
irtafaʿat nisbatu l-ʾinjāzi ḥattā tisʿīna fī l-miʾa.
The completion rate rose to as much as ninety percent.
The endpoint is normally understood as reached, but context decides whether an activity includes the endpoint itself. المعرض مفتوح حتى الجمعة may mean that Friday is the last open day or that opening hours stop when Friday begins. Formal notices should remove the ambiguity by stating شاملا يوم الجمعة “including Friday” or حتى نهاية يوم الخميس “through the end of Thursday.”
يستمر التسجيل حتى نهاية يوم الخميس، ولا تقبل الطلبات بعد ذلك.
yastamirru t-tasjīlu ḥattā nihāyati yawmi l-khamīsi, wa-lā tuqbalu ṭ-ṭalabātu baʿda dhālik.
Registration continues through the end of Thursday; applications are not accepted after that. (Unambiguous formal deadline.)
Case after the preposition
As a preposition, حتى makes the following noun genitive: حتى المساءِ. If that noun heads an iḍāfa, the chain continues: حتى نهايةِ فترةِ التسجيلِ “until the end of the registration period.” In ordinary unvocalized writing those endings disappear, so careful speech and adjective agreement reveal the structure.
| Structure | Fully vocalized form | Function |
|---|---|---|
| حتى + definite noun | حَتَّى الْمَسَاءِ | until evening |
| حتى + indefinite noun | حَتَّى وَقْتٍ مُتَأَخِّرٍ | until a late time |
| حتى + iḍāfa | حَتَّى نِهَايَةِ الْأُسْبُوعِ | until the end of the week |
| حتى + quantified limit | حَتَّى خَمْسَةِ أَيَّامٍ | up to five days |
يجوز تأجيل الموعد حتى خمسة أيام عمل.
yajūzu taʾjīlu l-mawʿidi ḥattā khamsati ʾayyāmi ʿamal.
The appointment may be postponed by up to five working days. (Formal policy language; English uses ‘by up to.’)
“Even”: coordination and focus
An endpoint can also be the least expected member of a set. That produces the meaning even. Here حتى is not necessarily a preposition, so you must not automatically assign genitive case.
In traditional coordination, the item after حتى is an extreme or final member of what precedes it and takes the case required by the coordinated role. In contemporary prose, حتى also works as a focus particle before a noun phrase, prepositional phrase, or full clause. The focused material keeps its own syntax.
قرأت الملف كله، حتى الملاحق.
qaraʾtu l-malaffa kullahu, ḥattā l-malāḥiqa.
I read the whole file, even the appendices. (الملاحقَ is accusative like the object it extends.)
حضر أعضاء الفريق كلهم، حتى المدير.
ḥaḍara ʾaʿḍāʾu l-farīqi kulluhum, ḥattā l-mudīru.
All the team members attended, even the director. (المديرُ is nominative.)
حتى في الشتاء، تبقى هذه الطريق مزدحمة.
ḥattā fī sh-shitāʾi, tabqā hādhihi ṭ-ṭarīqu muzdaḥima.
Even in winter, this road remains crowded.
حتى هي وافقت على نشر النتائج كاملة.
ḥattā hiya wāfaqat ʿalā nashri n-natāʾiji kāmila.
Even she agreed to publish the results in full.
In حتى هي, هي is an independent pronoun following focus حتى. It is not a suffix and is not genitive.
A case contrast that changes the construction
Compare a boundary reading with an “even” reading:
تصفحت الملف حتى الملحق الأخير.
taṣaffaḥtu l-malaffa ḥattā l-mulḥaqi l-ʾakhīr.
I browsed through the file as far as the final appendix. (Preposition + genitive.)
قرأت الملف حتى الملحق الأخير.
qaraʾtu l-malaffa ḥattā l-mulḥaqa l-ʾakhīr.
I read the file, even the final appendix. (Coordination/focus + accusative object.)
Unvocalized spelling hides the contrast; meaning and syntax recover it. This is why “the noun after حتى is always genitive” is an unsafe rule.
Clause endpoints: until something happens
A past-tense clause can simply report the event that closed a completed interval. The perfect verb has no subjunctive form.
انتظرنا أمام القاعة حتى وصل رئيس اللجنة.
intaẓarnā ʾamāma l-qāʿati ḥattā waṣala raʾīsu l-lajna.
We waited outside the hall until the committee chair arrived.
واصلت الصحفية البحث حتى وجدت الوثيقة الأصلية.
wāṣalati ṣ-ṣaḥafiyyatu l-baḥtha ḥattā wajadati l-wathīqata l-ʾaṣliyya.
The journalist kept searching until she found the original document.
With an imperfect that denotes a later, expected, or intended endpoint, formal MSA uses the subjunctive after حتى. Traditional analysis says an implicit أن licenses that mood; for practical use, recognize the frame main event + حتى + subjunctive endpoint.
سننتظر حتى يعود المدير من الاجتماع.
sanantaẓiru ḥattā yaʿūda l-mudīru mina l-ijtimāʿ.
We will wait until the director returns from the meeting.
ابق على الخط حتى يرد عليك أحد الموظفين.
ibqa ʿalā l-khaṭṭi ḥattā yarudda ʿalayka ʾaḥadu l-muwaẓẓafīn.
Stay on the line until an employee answers you. (Instruction to one man.)
The visible endings يعودَ and يردَّ matter in careful inflected pronunciation. For a final-weak verb, the mood may appear through stem behavior rather than a simple final fatḥa; see حتى + the Subjunctive for the complete paradigm.
Purpose and intended result: “so that”
The same later boundary can be the purpose for which someone acts. English then prefers so that or in order to. The imperfect remains subjunctive.
رفعت المذيعة صوتها حتى يسمع الجمهور التسجيل بوضوح.
rafaʿati l-mudhīʿatu ṣawtahā ḥattā yasmaʿa l-jumhūru t-tasjīla biwuḍūḥ.
The presenter raised her voice so that the audience could hear the recording clearly.
احفظ نسخة احتياطية حتى لا تفقد عملك إذا تعطل الجهاز.
iḥfaẓ nuskhatan iḥtiyāṭiyyatan ḥattā lā tafqida ʿamalaka ʾidhā taʿaṭṭala l-jihāz.
Save a backup copy so that you do not lose your work if the device fails. (Instruction to one man.)
Purpose حتى often contains an endpoint nuance: perform the first action until the desired result becomes possible. كي and لكي can express pure purpose without emphasizing that boundary. The distinction is a tendency, not a requirement that every حتى clause have a literal finish line.
Nouns and pronouns after حتى
Prepositional حتى, like منذ، مذ، كـ, normally governs an overt noun, not an attached pronoun. Do not create حتىه or حتاها for “until it/her.” Name the boundary with a noun, or use إلى أن + clause:
- حتى نهايته “until its end”
- حتى وصولها “until her arrival”
- إلى أن ينتهي “until it ends”
تابعت اللجنة المشروع حتى نهايته ثم نشرت تقييما شاملا.
tābaʿati l-lajnatu l-mashrūʿa ḥattā nihāyatihi thumma nasharat taqyīman shāmilan.
The committee followed the project until its conclusion and then published a comprehensive evaluation.
The suffix ـه attaches to نهاية, not to حتى. By contrast, independent pronouns after focus “even” are normal: حتى أنا، حتى هو، حتى هم. Their ordinary syntactic role determines their case; حتى does not govern them as a preposition.
Common Mistakes
Giving every noun after حتى genitive case
❌ حضر الجميع حتى المدير، مع نطق المدير بالكسرة.
Incorrect for the ‘even the director attended’ reading—the focused subject is nominative, not governed by prepositional حتى.
✅ حضر الجميع حتى المدير نفسه.
ḥaḍara l-jamīʿu ḥattā l-mudīru nafsuh.
Everyone attended, even the director himself.
Missing genitive case at a real boundary
❌ بقي المتجر مفتوحا حتى المساء، مع نطق المساء بالضمة.
Incorrect—temporal حتى is a preposition here, so المساءِ is genitive.
✅ بقي المتجر مفتوحا حتى وقت متأخر من المساء.
baqiya l-matjaru maftūḥan ḥattā waqtin mutaʾakhkhirin mina l-masāʾ.
The store remained open until late in the evening.
Attaching a pronoun directly
❌ قرأت التقرير حتىه.
Incorrect—prepositional حتى does not productively take a pronoun suffix.
✅ قرأت التقرير حتى نهايته.
qaraʾtu t-taqrīra ḥattā nihāyatih.
I read the report to the end.
Leaving an intended endpoint verb indicative
❌ سأنتظر حتى يعود المدير، مع نطق يعود بالضمة.
Incorrect in fully inflected formal MSA—the later endpoint takes subjunctive يعودَ.
✅ سأنتظر حتى يعود المدير.
sa-ʾantaẓiru ḥattā yaʿūda l-mudīr.
I will wait until the director returns.
Translating every English “even” with a genitive phrase
❌ حتى به يعرف الجواب.
Incorrect for ‘even he’—the person is focused as a subject, not expressed through a prepositional suffix.
✅ حتى هو يعرف الجواب.
ḥattā huwa yaʿrifu l-jawāb.
Even he knows the answer.
Key Takeaways
- Prepositional حتى + noun marks a spatial, temporal, or abstract limit and governs the genitive.
- Coordination/focus حتى means “even”; the following element keeps the case required by its own role.
- A completed past clause simply reports the endpoint, while a later intended endpoint or purpose normally uses the subjunctive imperfect.
- Prepositional حتى does not productively take suffixes: use حتى نهايته or إلى أن ينتهي.
- The endpoint may be inclusive or exclusive in context; formal deadlines should state the last included day or time explicitly.
