Using Full Plural Verb Agreement in Neutral VSO

English keeps plural agreement when the subject follows the verb: “Here come the guests.” Neutral formal Modern Standard Arabic calculates the same order differently. In canonical verb–subject–object order, a finite verb before an overt dual or plural human subject is normally singular, while still matching gender: وصل الضيوف but وصلت الضيفات.

The common transfer error is وصلوا الضيوف: the learner sees plural guests and copies their number onto the preceding verb. The repair is positional. Decide whether the noun phrase is the ordinary postverbal subject before selecting the verb. The full paradigm is developed on Verb-First Agreement; this page trains error diagnosis and editing.

The neutral production rule

For an overt human subject, use this sequence:

  1. Does the finite verb come before the subject?
  2. Is the noun phrase an integrated subject, with no detaching pause or afterthought?
  3. If yes, make the verb singular.
  4. Match the subject's gender: masculine singular before a male/mixed subject, feminine singular before an all-female subject.
OrderMale/mixed subjectAll-female subject
verb firstحضر الباحثونحضرت الباحثات
subject firstالباحثون حضرواالباحثات حضرن

Singular preverbal agreement does not make the following noun singular. الباحثون remains a nominative plural subject; the word order licenses reduced number on the verb.

💡
Put a vertical line before the subject. If the pattern is verb | overt dual/plural subject, remove dual or plural marking from the verb, then retain the correct gender.

Common Mistakes

Six wrong-to-right repairs

1. Masculine plural before an overt plural subject

❌ وصلوا الضيوف إلى الفندق بعد منتصف الليل.

Incorrect as neutral VSO — the overt plural subject follows the verb, so the verb should be masculine singular.

✅ وصل الضيوف إلى الفندق بعد منتصف الليل.

waṣala ḍ-ḍuyūfu ʾilā l-funduqi baʿda muntaṣafi l-layl.

The guests arrived at the hotel after midnight.

2. Feminine plural before an overt all-female subject

❌ ناقشن الطبيبات الحالات الطارئة صباحا.

Incorrect as canonical VSO — feminine-plural ناقشن is replaced by feminine-singular ناقشت before الطبيبات.

✅ ناقشت الطبيبات الحالات الطارئة صباح اليوم.

nāqashati ṭ-ṭabībātu l-ḥālāti ṭ-ṭāriʾata ṣabāḥa l-yawm.

The female doctors discussed the emergency cases this morning.

3. Dual marking before two male participants

❌ غادرا المترجمان القاعة قبل التصويت.

Incorrect as neutral VSO — a pre-subject verb is singular even before an overt dual subject.

✅ غادر المترجمان القاعة قبل بدء التصويت.

ghādara l-mutarjimāni l-qāʿata qabla badʾi t-taṣwīt.

The two interpreters left the hall before voting began.

4. Dual marking before two women

❌ قدمتا المهندستان الاقتراح إلى اللجنة.

Incorrect as canonical VSO — retain feminine gender but remove dual number from the preceding verb.

✅ قدمت المهندستان الاقتراح المعدل إلى اللجنة.

qaddamati l-muhandisatāni l-iqtirāḥa l-muʿaddala ʾilā l-lajna(h).

The two female engineers submitted the revised proposal to the committee.

5. Full agreement copied into a news-style event report

❌ أعلنوا المسؤولون النتائج في مؤتمر صحفي.

Incorrect in the intended neutral event report — المسؤولون is the integrated postverbal subject, not an afterthought.

✅ أعلن المسؤولون النتائج في مؤتمر صحفي مساء أمس.

ʾaʿlana l-masʾūlūna n-natāʾija fī muʾtamarin ṣaḥafiyyin masāʾa ʾams.

The officials announced the results at a press conference yesterday evening.

6. Ignoring the first conjunct's gender

❌ حضر ليلى وسامر جلسة الافتتاح.

Incorrect as the conservative formal default — the verb precedes the coordination and should match feminine first conjunct ليلى.

✅ حضرت ليلى وسامر جلسة الافتتاح معا.

ḥaḍarat laylā wa-sāmirun jalsata l-iftitāḥi maʿā.

Layla and Samer attended the opening session together.

The last repair adds coordination, not an exception to the positional rule. A verb before coordinated lexical subjects remains singular in conservative formal MSA, and its gender normally follows the first conjunct.

Minimal contrast 1: event report versus topic

أنهى المحررون التقرير قبل الموعد المحدد.

ʾanhā l-muḥarrirūna t-taqrīra qabla l-mawʿidi l-muḥaddad.

The editors finished the report before the deadline. (Neutral VSO event report; singular verb.)

المحررون أنهوا التقرير قبل الموعد، لا المترجمون.

al-muḥarrirūna ʾanhaw t-taqrīra qabla l-mawʿidi, lā l-mutarjimūn.

The editors finished the report before the deadline, not the translators. (Subject-first contrast; plural verb.)

Both sentences are grammatical. Changing order changes both information structure and agreement. The second does not “correct” the first; it makes المحررون the contrastive topic.

Minimal contrast 2: feminine plural

غادرت الممرضات المستشفى بعد انتهاء المناوبة.

ghādarati l-mumarriḍātu l-mustashfā baʿda ntihāʾi l-munāwaba(h).

The nurses left the hospital after the shift ended. (VSO; feminine singular verb.)

الممرضات غادرن المستشفى، أما الطبيبات فبقين.

al-mumarriḍātu ghādarna l-mustashfā, ʾammā ṭ-ṭabībātu fa-baqīna.

The nurses left the hospital, whereas the doctors stayed. (Subject-first contrast; feminine plural verbs.)

English speakers often treat the two orders as stylistic rearrangements. Arabic morphology proves that they are different clause structures.

Coordinated subjects: count only after fronting

With a complete coordinated subject before the verb, agreement resolves over the whole group. Two singular human conjuncts trigger dual agreement; a larger set triggers plural agreement.

سامر وليلى حضرا الدورة التدريبية كاملة.

sāmirun wa-laylā ḥaḍarā d-dawrata t-tadrībiyyata kāmila(h).

Samer and Layla attended the entire training course. (Coordination first; masculine dual for a mixed pair.)

ناقش المدير والموظفون الميزانية الجديدة.

nāqasha l-mudīru wa-l-muwaẓẓafūna l-mīzāniyyata l-jadīda(h).

The director and the employees discussed the new budget. (Verb first; singular agreement with the first conjunct.)

المدير والموظفون ناقشوا الميزانية طوال الصباح.

al-mudīru wa-l-muwaẓẓafūna nāqashū l-mīzāniyyata ṭawāla ṣ-ṣabāḥ.

The director and the employees discussed the budget all morning. (Coordination first; plural agreement with the set.)

Do not apply feminine-singular nonhuman agreement to two coordinated singular things. الكتاب والقلم موجودان has a dual controller. The separate Agreement with Coordinated Subjects page treats that calculation in depth.

Grammatical lookalikes with a plural verb first

A plural verb before a later noun phrase is possible when the verb ending itself supplies the subject and the noun phrase is detached clarification or afterthought. Prosody and punctuation matter:

وصلوا مبكرا، أعضاء الوفد القادمون من الرباط.

waṣalū mubakkiran, ʾaʿḍāʾu l-wafdi l-qādimūna mina r-ribāṭ.

They arrived early—the delegation members coming from Rabat. (Detached clarification, not neutral VSO.)

Likewise, وصلوا مبكرا is complete by itself: the suffix ـوا is the pronominal subject “they.” Adding an integrated subject without restructuring it creates the learner error. Full preverbal agreement is also attested historically and in some regional usage (regional/historical variation), but it is not the safest neutral edited-MSA default.

💡
Ask whether the later noun could be removed while leaving the same participants already encoded as a complete pronoun subject. If yes and a real pause separates it, you may have an afterthought; otherwise use ordinary singular VSO agreement.

Nonhuman plurals are a separate cause

وصلت الشحنات الجديدة إلى الميناء عند الفجر.

waṣalati sh-shiḥnātu l-jadīdatu ʾilā l-mīnāʾi ʿinda l-fajr.

The new shipments reached the port at dawn.

Here feminine singular وصلت is not merely the reduced VSO form. The nonhuman plural الشحنات controls feminine-singular agreement even in subject-first order: الشحنات وصلت. Diagnose nonhuman agreement on Using Plural Agreement with Non-Human Plurals rather than forcing it into the human VSO/SVO contrast.

Editing a paragraph

❌ دخلوا المشاركون القاعة، ثم جلستا المديرة والمترجمة قرب المنصة. بعد ذلك قدموا الباحثون ملخصاتهم.

Incorrect as a neutral event sequence — each full or dual verb precedes its integrated overt subject.

✅ دخل المشاركون القاعة، ثم جلست المديرة والمترجمة قرب المنصة. بعد ذلك قدم الباحثون ملخصاتهم.

dakhala l-mushārikūna l-qāʿata, thumma jalasati l-mudīratu wa-l-mutarjimatu qurba l-minaṣṣa(h). baʿda dhālika qaddama l-bāḥithūna mulakhkhaṣātihim.

The participants entered the hall, then the director and interpreter sat near the platform. After that, the researchers presented their summaries.

The second verb is feminine singular because the first postverbal conjunct المديرة is feminine. The third is masculine singular before الباحثون. The plural subjects themselves remain plural.

Repair procedure

  1. Locate the finite verb and the noun phrase that supplies its subject.
  2. Decide whether the subject is before the verb, integrated after it, or detached as an afterthought.
  3. For an integrated postverbal dual/plural human subject, use a singular verb and retain gender.
  4. For a preverbal human subject, restore full person, gender, and number agreement.
  5. For postverbal coordination, use singular agreement with the first conjunct as the conservative formal default.
  6. Check nonhuman plurals separately; their feminine-singular agreement persists across both orders.

Key Takeaways

  • Neutral VSO normally uses a singular verb before an overt dual or plural human subject.
  • Gender remains visible: masculine singular before male/mixed subjects, feminine singular before all-female subjects.
  • Subject-first human clauses require full agreement and usually carry topic or contrast structure.
  • A plural verb followed by a detached afterthought is grammatical but is not canonical VSO.
  • With postverbal coordination, the singular verb normally follows the gender of the first conjunct in conservative formal MSA.
