Using Plural Agreement with Non-Human Plurals

English encourages one simple calculation: a plural noun takes plural words around it. Formal contemporary Modern Standard Arabic first asks a semantic question. A plural referring to things, abstractions, or ordinary animals normally belongs to the feminine-singular agreement class: هذه التقارير مهمة، وقد وصلت “these reports are important, and they arrived.”

The transfer error is therefore broader than choosing one wrong verb ending. English plural pressure can spread to the demonstrative, adjective, predicate, relative marker, and pronoun. Repair the controller first, then rebuild the whole agreement chain. For a fuller account of the system, see Non-Human Plural Agreement.

Diagnose the controller before the ending

Use three questions:

  1. Is the controller morphologically plural?
  2. Does it refer to humans or other rational agents in the context?
  3. Which words actually agree with that controller?

If the answer is “plural, nonhuman,” use feminine singular on its demonstrative, adjective, predicate, verb, pronoun, and relative marker. The noun itself remains plural.

💡
Circle the nonhuman plural once, then draw a line to every form that refers back to it. Change the whole chain to feminine singular; do not patch only the nearest adjective.

Common Mistakes

Six wrong-to-right repairs

1. A human-plural demonstrative for things

❌ هؤلاء الجداول واضحة في النسخة الجديدة.

Incorrect — هؤلاء normally points to plural people; nonhuman الجداول requires feminine-singular هذه and واضحة.

✅ هذه الجداول واضحة في النسخة الجديدة.

hādhihi l-jadāwilu wāḍiḥatun fī n-nuskhati l-jadīda(h).

These tables are clear in the new version.

2. Plural adjectives copied from English

❌ الطرق الطويلون مزدحمون مساء.

Incorrect — الطرق is nonhuman, so both its adjective and predicate must be feminine singular.

✅ الطرق الطويلة مزدحمة مساء اليوم.

aṭ-ṭuruqu ṭ-ṭawīlatu muzdaḥimatun masāʾa l-yawm.

The long roads are congested this evening.

3. A masculine-plural verb after a nonhuman subject

❌ العقود الجديدة انتهوا أمس.

Incorrect — subject-first order does not make nonhuman العقود take human masculine-plural verbal agreement.

✅ العقود الجديدة انتهت أمس، فأرسلنا نسخها النهائية.

al-ʿuqūdu l-jadīdatu ntahat ʾamsi, fa-ʾarsalnā nusakhahā n-nihāʾiyya(h).

The new contracts ended yesterday, so we sent their final copies.

4. A plural object pronoun for things

❌ وجدت المفاتيح ووضعتهم قرب الباب.

Incorrect — ـهم resumes plural people, while nonhuman المفاتيح takes feminine-singular ـها.

✅ وجدت المفاتيح ووضعتها في الدرج العلوي.

wajadtu l-mafātīḥa wa-waḍaʿtuhā fī d-durji l-ʿulwiyy.

I found the keys and put them in the top drawer.

5. الذين with nonhuman antecedents

❌ شاهدنا الأفلام الذين فازوا بالجائزة.

Incorrect — nonhuman الأفلام takes feminine-singular التي, and the relative-clause verb follows the same agreement class.

✅ شاهدنا الأفلام التي فازت بالجائزة هذا الأسبوع.

shāhadnā l-ʾaflāma llatī fāzat bil-jāʾizati hādhā l-ʾusbūʿ.

We watched the films that won the award this week.

6. Human feminine-plural forms for ordinary animals

❌ الخيول متعبات، فأعطيتهن ماء.

Incorrect in neutral factual MSA — ordinary animals normally pattern as nonhuman plurals, not as an all-female human group.

✅ الخيول متعبة، فأعطيتها ماء بعد السباق.

al-khuyūlu mutʿabatun, fa-ʾaʿṭaytuhā māʾan baʿda s-sibāq.

The horses were tired, so I gave them water after the race.

Two minimal contrasts

Human reference, not plural shape, licenses full plural agreement:

الأطفال الصغار عادوا من الرحلة وهم متعبون.

al-ʾaṭfālu ṣ-ṣighāru ʿādū mina r-riḥlati wa-hum mutʿabūn.

The young children returned from the trip, and they were tired. (Human plural.)

الحقائب الصغيرة عادت من الرحلة وهي متسخة.

al-ḥaqāʾibu ṣ-ṣaghīratu ʿādat mina r-riḥlati wa-hiya muttasikha(h).

The small bags returned from the trip, and they were dirty. (Nonhuman plural.)

The next contrast separates a morphologically plural noun from a singular collective noun:

السفن التجارية وصلت، وهي جاهزة للتفريغ.

as-sufunu t-tijāriyyatu waṣalat, wa-hiya jāhizatun lit-tafrīgh.

The merchant ships arrived, and they are ready for unloading. (Nonhuman plural السفن.)

الأسطول التجاري وصل، وهو جاهز للإبحار.

al-ʾusṭūlu t-tijāriyyu waṣala, wa-huwa jāhizun lil-ʾibḥār.

The merchant fleet arrived, and it is ready to sail. (Lexically masculine singular الأسطول.)

Agreement follows grammatical structure: السفن is plural nonhuman and therefore feminine singular; الأسطول is singular masculine even though a fleet contains several ships.

Legitimate plural-looking alternatives

Full plural agreement is correct when the referent is human: المهندسات الجديدات حضرن. It can also be a deliberate (literary) choice when animals or objects are personified as speaking, reasoning characters.

في الحكاية، الأشجار حكيمات، وقد حكين للأطفال أسرار الغابة.

fī l-ḥikāyati, al-ʾashjāru ḥakīmātun, wa-qad ḥakayna lil-ʾaṭfāli ʾasrāra l-ghāba(h).

In the tale, the trees are wise women, and they told the children the forest's secrets. (Literary personification.)

That sentence is not a neutral description of botany. The human-style agreement helps create the personification. In factual (formal) MSA, write الأشجار طويلة، وقد نمت with feminine-singular agreement. Regional spoken varieties may differ (regional: varies); do not import that variation silently into edited MSA.

Mixed diagnostic set

For each controller, choose the feature bundle before writing the clause:

ControllerClassRequired continuation
الموظفونhuman masculine/mixed pluralالجدد وصلوا، وهم...
الموظفاتhuman feminine pluralالجديدات وصلن، وهن...
الحواسيبnonhuman pluralالجديدة وصلت، وهي...
اللجنةfeminine singular collectiveالجديدة قررت، وهي...
الأطفالhuman plural despite broken-plural shapeالصغار عادوا، وهم...

هذه الحواسيب المحمولة سريعة، لكنها تحتاج إلى بطاريات جديدة.

hādhihi l-ḥawāsību l-maḥmūlatu sarīʿatun, lākinnahā taḥtāju ʾilā baṭṭāriyyātin jadīda(h).

These laptops are fast, but they need new batteries.

The first chain—هذه، المحمولة، سريعة، ـها، تحتاج—all refers to الحواسيب. The later adjective جديدة belongs to a second nonhuman plural, بطاريات.

Editing a paragraph

❌ هؤلاء الرسائل وصلوا صباحا، لكنهم ناقصون. حفظتهم الموظفة الذين راجعتهم.

Incorrect — every plural form treats nonhuman الرسائل as people, and الذين also has the wrong antecedent class.

✅ هذه الرسائل وصلت صباحا، لكنها ناقصة. حفظتها الموظفة التي راجعتها.

hādhihi r-rasāʾilu waṣalat ṣabāḥan, lākinnahā nāqiṣa(h). ḥafiẓathā l-muwaẓẓafatu llatī rājaʿathā.

These messages arrived this morning, but they are incomplete. The employee who reviewed them saved them.

The corrected paragraph does not make everything feminine singular. الموظفة is a human feminine singular subject, while both object clitics ـها resume nonhuman الرسائل. The surface forms match, but their controllers differ.

Repair procedure

  1. Underline each plural noun and recover what it denotes, not merely how it ends.
  2. Classify it as human/rational, nonhuman, or a lexically singular collective.
  3. For a nonhuman plural, write feminine singular above the noun.
  4. Trace every agreeing demonstrative, adjective, predicate, verb, pronoun, and relative marker.
  5. Recheck genuine alternatives: human reference, explicit literary personification, or labeled regional usage.
💡
The reusable cause is controller misclassification. Once the controller is correctly classified, the apparently separate errors in verbs, adjectives, pronouns, and demonstratives collapse into one repair.

Key Takeaways

  • Nonhuman plurals normally control feminine-singular agreement throughout formal MSA.
  • Use هذه/تلك، هي/ـها، التي, feminine-singular adjectives, and a feminine-singular verb.
  • Human broken plurals still take human plural agreement; singular collectives follow their own lexical gender.
  • Human-style agreement with a nonhuman noun can be deliberate literary personification, not the neutral default.
